Why Mormon Influencers Are So Popular

  • It's actually insane I have to say this...
    I don't actually think that many creators are Mormon, probably just my algo and the type of content I watch having a large overlap. It just felt like I kept hearing about how X creator is Mormon for weeks and finally made a video about it.
    Mormon is not an ethnic group, they do not have a long shared history of persecution. They do not "control" social media. This video is purely about an interesting observation I had and my curiosity into why there are so many successful Mormons in the creator space. It's a topic for fun, its not meant to be seen as anything larger. I am critiquing the system/org not the people, I use the people to make points and to be entertaining.
    Antisemitism is cringe, you are cringe. If you are here to say "Do a topic about X group" you are missing the point of this video.

    Antisemitism is for losers, you are a loser if that's what you are trying to turn any of this into.
    You need to go outside, touch grass and never speak to another human again.
    The clip where the man mentions the network of Mormons in this is vastly different than a group working together and having a shared struggle because of centuries of bigotry.
    Edit:
    also, I really like some creators who are Mormon. The outdoor boys, jerryrigeverything, Mark Rober, etc. I just have issue with the religion and found it interesting how prevalent they are in social media.
    It would take hours in a video just to name them all and that would just be in the lifestyle space. I might make another video talking more about the history, or documenting all the different creators I stumbled across.
    Once again, I must state. MORMONS DO NOT CONTROL social media, they are not some secret cult manipulating the algo. Its just Mormons are taught a lot of skills that transfer to being an influencer, or CIA asset. I dunno if there even is a disproportionate amount, I highly doubt it. I just found it interesting how many I noticed who were Mormon, probably just my algo.

      No offense but a video idea about how prevalent influencers being Mormon "secretly" or "openly" is just not a very good idea, on paper and on execution.
      And even if you don't have a problem with the influencers, the best option would've been to make a video about the religion itself (history, appeal, etc...), It's just not a good video idea and isn't an entertaining video idea nor is it a good topic (in this case)

    Trad Wives sell an image. Most videos show them doing an optional activity, such as baking cookies. You never see the drudgery of chores or the frustration of children misbehaving, unless they're selling a solution.
    I suspect Mormons are taught from an early age to be mindful of image. At school, when other kids complained about their own religion (boring sermons, required fasting) the Mormon kids stayed pretty tight lipped about their own experiences when they were around non-Mormon friends. Not saying that's universal, just what I observed growing up.

    • @poliwoplolly683
      @poliwoplolly683 Месяц назад +2

      You are absolutely incentivised to be mindful of image growing up in the church. Keep in mind, I'm a girl, so my experience was basically on steroids. You need to uphold a "pure" image, regardless of what's going on in your personal life in order to stay afloat in the church's social circles, which oftentimes, are the only social circles you're allowed to interact with. You're heavily encouraged to lie to stay appealing.
      Much later in life, when I discovered I was into girls, I married a woman and later got pregnant. My mom tells everyone that we're "roommates" and that my wife is a man who's just... Idk, suspiciously not there?? My wife is trans, it's literally her child, biologically even. My mom swears up and down that she doesn't exist, that I have a mystery roommate who I'm totally not married to, and that my husband is just absent for some fucking reason. The reasoning differs a lot too, it's not even a good lie, but people buy it because they remember who I was back when I was just as entrenched as they were. It's better for her image (which is the church's image) that I am a straight woman. If I was simply not gay, then I'd be ideal. I'm young, attractive, going to be a mother in literally a few weeks here, I cook and clean and do all the things I "should" and therefore I am marketable. I haven't gone to the church in years, but because I follow every single stupid stipulation placed onto Mormon women, my mom needs to run her mouth, and I'm not going to go to that cursed place to set everyone's perception straight. Mormon women need to be marketable above all else. It's disgusting that image is all you're good for if you're born female. The men matter, and the women only matter because they bring the kind of man that shit appeals to into the church. It becomes a point of pride to brag about if your children pop out as carbon copies of what the church deems as desirable. This is why the influencers are all so samey.
      Keep in mind, people entrenched in the church are the church, mind, body, and soul. They are a mouthpiece and not much else. Who you are doesn't matter, this is why they need to deconstruct you and force conformity. It hits every single mark on the cult diagnostics list.

    Don't Mormons give 10% of their income to the church? So the church has an incentive to further these big influencers because they earn as well. So they don't admonish the influencers for not following ALL the rules (clothing etc) as long as enough money comes in...

      It could be, but there is a theory that they fund those into businesses or stocks in major corporations so they can invest further and build temples and churches and thus recruit more followers. I am an ex mormon and I reside in the Philippines, and oh boy, the amount of influence they have in here is staggering specially in the northern islands. The money they use to build their churches and temples are no joke as well since they have very expensive materials (did I mention some of them are made from marble?) and they do have businesses on the side exclusively for members that circulate the money. Its like Costco, members only, low prices and great deals. And you would be surprised since all they sell are magazines, books, jewelries and garments. Credit where credit is due tho, they do help out on community drives and the poor (I.e. scholarships and loans) which I think further their reach. The loans they offer aren't bad either. There could be some businesses that are less known in circles but you can tell the church is rich because they maintain their churches well. Even the grass looks greener inside.

Seriously, some of the biggest names in modern literature are mormom, and are literally a part of a club of mormon authors, whose soul purpose is to inject mormonism into their works and bring in more mormons. Authors like Orsan Scott Card (Ender's Game), Stephanie Meyer (Twilight), Brandon Sanderson (too many books to list). Card and Meyer really hammer their mormonism in ij very sneaky ways too. Bella isnt allowed to drink caffeine and goes on at length about how it makes her "wired" (like a diet coke is making her trip balls) and in the Ender's series, teleportation requires one to hop INTO heaven, and then dip out, in a way that only makes sense if you have some mormon trivia background.

I'm born in the 70s and journaling has always been highly promoted to us as a way to process our gratitude and show our life experiences to our posterity. I have a decent amount of personal journals from my teens to adulthood. Pinterest might have been even bigger early on with this kind of stuff. Nice rosy quotes, etc. I never chose to get online and promote the church. Been there and done that as a return missionary. I'm a Mormon so mentioning something on facebook once a blue moon was normal to me. Most of my facebook feed is Mormon though and I think we all understand that there is a limit to how much of that stuff people want to see before you're super dull even amongst ourselves and muted. Also, the universe expanded from an infinitesimally small space, and there's boatloads of evidence for it (contrary to the lack of evidence your god has) so to deny that is astounding, especially when to your last point we don't claim to know everything, we don't know why the universal constants came about in the way they did, and well continue to admit we don't know until we find some evidence for a reason (oh which again, there is absolutely 0 evidence for your god)

You have to resort to a nanny, which can cost as much as the woman working outside the home would have made anyway. So this was big for me. This is really big for me . I have a couple of painful stories with the church. I'll leave one and keep it to the cliff notes here for everyones viewing sake.
    As a queer. As a trans person. As a human being who existed in tumultuous time of my life in the Mormon church, I'm very glad that I left but I didn't leave of my own choice. I wasn't glad when it happened for years. I got excommunicated at 14 for sharing a meme on Facebook. That went something to the effect of "share this cat if you support gay people or just really like cats" there was an immediate silence and then days of unfriending... No one would talk to me. No one would say anything about what I had done wrong for over 2 years until I finally was told I could not enter the building with the rest of my family one morning, heartbreak and the reason he gave me was, "Because you are not godly anymore and have not been for a long time, go home and pray, fû&&@t." By my Branch president to my face. I was 16 at the time when he said it and I was to young to realize I didn't need any of that anymore. Still i struggled for years having to forge a new identity learning to love myself without God and The Mormon church in my life. Because they really wanted to be everything you are. Even to this day it still haunts me at 25. It almost drove me to attempt to commit suicide. What they did harmed me. How they acted changed me. Them deciding to stand in front of a door and say that to me 10 years later to my face, wounded deeper than any child deserves to know the depth of is possible.
    This is only one painful story. I have many as stories to tell. Not all quite as painful as this. There's good in the church too. It's not like every person is a monster.
    I remembered looking up to him as a kid wanting to be like him when my dad was gone from my life, he left but this guy stayed, I remember the way he treated my mom and my family , bringing us dinner when people aren't talking to us after he left. I remember the way he welcomed us back into the church despite the divorce. I remember the home teaching nights where he made Christmas and birthdays happen for us that we would not have had otherwise.
    There is lots of beauty to be found and shared in religion too and that can't be ignored by some people. But that's not all I remember.
    I remember the disgust he said it to my face with that last day. I remember the way he asked me if I had been masturbating before I was aloud to go to Temple the first time and told me I wasn't worthy because I didn't know how to answer that kind of a question at 12. I remember events that are not safe for posting here when I was 9, what he did to me in the dark of night, when no one else was around to hear me at a Scouting trip. I always will. One of the many scars that man left behind in his time in before and after he became the Branch president.
    The Mormon church is a tool for abuse. Countless abuses of power, hiding their predators and moving them from state to state and sometimes even country to country, pushing down queers, mistreating their wifes abandoning communities in places they make dependent on them. All of these things are the reasons people leave and more.
    I'm a better person for leaving. I'm a happier person for leaving. I'm a person who is alive today for leaving. I'm a person who's a in a loving pair of relationships with two people that care about me very much and I care about very much ❤️ I would have been a very different person if I survived my time in the church differently. It is thanks only to the kindness and companionship that I have survived that winter in my life at all.
    This was a lot to type out this morning. I am shaking. My phone is at 10%. I don't want people to reply I just want them to understand.

      For me the key was realizing that the church is not god. It merely has its own human interpretation of who God is. God to me is unexplainable in his ways, that's his/her/it's nature. When your bond to God is personal, you don't really need a church(maybe apart from the social perspective).
      Ps sorry for replying😂

They tend to not tell you what they want from you until you’re invested, hence inviting you for coffee and getting to know you personally first. They tend to not tell you the name of the thing until directly asked. The Mormon sixth sense thing is real. The best I could come up with for how I pick them out is that they’re white, don’t swear, do good, and have quirky fun. I imagine, given the tight knit culture within the LDS community, that there are also mannerisms and speech patterns that I’m tacitly picking up on, too. I also heard several Mormon media personalities studied in BYU’s media program, which might explain some similarities among RUclipsrs in particular. Again, given the strong sense of community, even those that didn’t attend the program would likely put out content that’s influenced by the style of those who did.

      Since more than half of the LDS members in the world live outside the US, and the fastest growing areas are in South America and Africa, it can be reasonably assumed that most members are not in fact, white.

    Back in like 2013 or so I remember watching RUclips with my nevermo friends and saying "that one's Mormon." I think the first one was Lindsay Sterling. And they'd be like, "no she's not!" Then I'd say, "that other one's Mormon but they'll be exmo soon." And my friends would be like, "you think everyone's Mormon!" But I'm telling you, when you're raised LDS, you pick up on tiny little cues and you just KNOW.

    I am a member. This all seems really numbed out. Lots of the church is not like this. There ARE groups, GROUPS like this. But we can have any jobs and women are not discriminated against for having a job. Whilst there are things I dont like about my church, such as not being able to play stuff like diabo 4 (i do) and have a few things. TLDR, the majority of "mormons" are not like this. Please dont make us seem mean. We love all, and thank you for being here!

      I'm not a Mormon myself. In fact, I am rather a critic. But I understand that you are absolutely correct. Mormons are an easy target to insult as a "cult" because they are not mainstream and there's no cultural taboo against insulting them. Mormons are also incredibly nice and "turn the other cheek" when they are insulted, so there's no fear in insulting them. You will never get a Charlie Hebdo like situation from Mormons. Instead, they will pray for you and invite you to their church. Utah is one of the best run states in the USA, and Mormons have a social fabric and values that lead to higher than average community success rates. Your comment illustrates the graciousness that is common among Mormons that the rest of society can learn from.

    Interesting video. In my opinion there's nothing really wrong with them making content whether they say they're Mormon or not. I mean do people normally announce which religion/belief they are in every video they make? They're just...people, just like everyone else.
    Don't get me wrong, I'm not Mormon and I've never even seen any of these videos. But I don't think a particularly big deal needs to be made about Mormons being influencers any more than anyone else being influencers. If you like those content creators, cool; if not, cool.

      Yup. It's just propaganda and turmoil.
      The rise in unrest is correlated with the rise of social media. It was fine at first because the older generations had NO idea how to use forums like Facebook/Twitter. Now that they do, they're mixing with the youngest generations like oil and water, both sides hate each other.

    As an exmo, i feel like the church’s focus on appearance (like people wont buy hot chocolate from starbucks bc the cup is still starbucks and looks like a coffee cup, so people might think you are drinking coffee) is a driving factor for why there are so many successful mormon influencers. You have 5 kids, sure, but your house is always neat and orderly and perfectly decorated because that means you are a good mom. You cook labor intensive meals from scratch (rotating out old food storage) because home cooked meals (properly blessed) mean you are a good mom. You send your 15 yr old son to church with home baked bread for the sacrament because that means you are a good mom and “where does she have time to bake with 5 kids?” Will get asked. It is all done (to an extent) because it makes it look perfect, and mormons love to strive for perfection - for the lord , of course. Appearance is everything (consciously or not) and these influencers get to show their “perfect life” off as indirect marketing for the prosperity gospel the church preaches.

    • @christianlassen1577
      @christianlassen1577 Месяц назад

      don't confuse some superficial people with the whole church. most of us won't go to Starbucks just to avoid looking trendy.
      Paul talked a lot about this in his letters to the ancient Christians. "hey guys, it's not technically bad to eat meat that's been sacrificed to other gods, but it's not a great look and just confuses most people, so, best to avoid it"

    • @Materogringo
      @Materogringo Месяц назад +1

      @@christianlassen1577 i’m not. The superficial, performative nature of the “perfection” is a feature, not a bug. Temples are built to exactness, kept perfectly clean. Missionaries are told “obedience brings blessings but exact obedience brings miracles.” Missionaries who come home early are stigmatized and looked down on, and god forbid someone not go on a mission. I know people who definitely did stuff before marriage with their spouse that would have precluded them from a temple marriage but the invites were sent and the plans were made, so they didnt say anything because if they postponed “everyone would know.” Hell, the conflict that drives the book/movie “Charlie” was that the dude didnt want “used merchandise.” When i wore blue shirts to church or didnt take the sacrament, i knew people thought about it. Utah has more boob jobs and plastic surgery than LA, second to Miami. Appearance, and the appearance of perfection, matters to mormons.
      The scripture that you share just goes to that point. Its all about the appearance. There is no substance. As you rightly point out, it isnt all members. But it sure as hell is a lot of them.
      That said

      You have a statistic or percentage on that one? how much *should* it be? what's the threshold for judging how superficial a group is or isn't? how does that compare with outside the church? boob jobs isn't a great measure of that, there's a million ways to be superficial, most of them are a lot cheaper.

I will say in 8 years of teaching, i had more students in two years at byu beg for an A to keep perfect grades than in 6 years elsewhere.

    Not defending Mormon beliefs but you seem to have an abnormal amount of predujice. I studied mormonism briefly in college and attended a few services / interviewed some church members. They definately are cult-like in some recruitment aspects but they're much less harmful than average Christians... Much more open to diversity in general. I was shocked how diverse the church I went to was. Apparently the Mormon church did a lot of work after the Vietnam War trying to rebuild and help Vietnamese people (this is from an elderly Vietnamese man living in NC in 2015, never looked into it in detail) I don't think people that aren't defining themselves as Mormon in their content are acting maliciously, very few people make religion apart of their content unless it's a major aspect like lifestyle vlogs. Jerryrig, mark and others aren't prostylzing for mormonism in their content they just make content and are Mormon. I'd also say while the church is incredibly wealthy there are plenty of people struggling financially in the church you shouldn't discredit.
