El manga se basa en personas reales como Reira que es inspirada en Oliva, Así como Takumi en Atsuki Sakurai , hasta su historia es la misma , padre alcohólico, madre fallecida y el con problemas pero representante y cerebro de su banda. aunque no quiera admitirlo. Nana fue inspirada en Anna y Ren = Matsumoto Hideto o Hide quien fue criado por su abuela, guitarrista, compositor, cantante y productor. Hide fue encontrado muerto por motivos desconocidos,a la edad de 33 años. La chica con la que estuvo en la habitación esa noche sostuvo que él estaba muy borracho, y que cuando le dejó acostado se volvió a levantar y se ahorcó con una toalla alrededor de su cuello. Aunque no se descarta que se hubiese suicidado debido a problemas emocionales, ya que según sus amigos era alguien muy depresivo. Así varios personajes de la farándula japonesa se retratan en el manga y anime NANA.
