No. If you get a square of your own color you can take 1-2 of your spheres away. The more you have the better your chances of winning. There are some strategies to implement!

I just wrote out an entire sequence of moves to win, but this game was simpler than I thought. As player 2, your only goal is to place a sphere in the center of the second row. Turn 1-3 no matter what player 1 does you place them in the middle 4 holes, the only thing that changes your 2nd and 3rd turn would be if player 1 already placed 2 or 1 in the middle or has 3/4 spheres to make a sphere, do not stack any spheres on top of eachother until the bottom layer is filled with 1 gap in the middle 4 holes, if you stop the 1st layer possible squares and fill each legal move player 1 will be forced to place his sphere filling the first level, allowing you to place your's directly on top, securing your victory. Placing one in the middle of the 2nd layer stops all other possible squaring opportunities for the remainder of the game.
To be clear, there is no possible way to place a sphere with 2 possible squaring opportunities, so all you need to do as player 2 is simply place them randomly until you see player 1 have 3/4 to make a square and place it in the empty hole, you'd win 100% of the time. Edit: just to add to this, the only player that can activity only have one possible move is player 1, so player 2 can never be forced to place a sphere that gives player 1 the win.
If both players don't let the other create a square then it doesn't matter where you place your balls. It's a numbers game. If the number of total balls to create the pyramid is even, then the player that starts second wins. Same for the first player if the number of balls is odd.
