Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum Closure
On the 5 feb 2024 Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum Ultimo will close for 3 years.
This will allow major works including a reoriented entrance facing the goods line which leads to Central station, more indoor space and works that will show off heritage facades of the original power station built in 1899.
This video shows the museum as it is today.

It was formerly known as the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences and was down Harris Street in a beautiful old brick building now part of TAFE. It was just filled with exhibits; hands on stuff, operating model engines. It was like Alladin's cave and was much more interesting than the current building, IMO. I would wag school just to hang out there; that was in the late 60's; no questions asked.
Oooh! Explains what MAAS stands for :)
Thank you for that :)
You know, i’d love to have lived in the 60’s, 70’s or even 80’s.
Absolutely fun times i hear.
I’m a 1992 baby though lol
I definitely agree and I wagged school and went there. I remember a small theatrette and the large Strassberg Clock (not sure of the spelling), which had moving parts and was musical.
Some of my favourite childhood memories of Sydney involved the Powerhouse Museum. I’m upset they’ll be adjusting it but at the same time I’m excited to see the new renovation work undertaken
Some of my best childhood memories in this building. I've now taken my children there. Bit sad that its going to change. Glad perrottet and his developer buddies didn't get their way and just put high rise apartments there.
Perrottet wasn't going to put High rise apartments on the site that's just miss information coming from you. Chris Minns is doing a cheaper version of what Perrottet was going to do without knocking down the Wran Building and not converting it into a fashion and applied arts museum.
@@themickcollo sorry your wrong. Perrottet was the one pushing for the museum to be moved to Parramatta so he could develop the ultimo site. In fact it started with Mike Baird then Perrottet. Either way short sighted greedy liberal muppets.
Thanks for showing this. I used to go here a lot with my parents as a teen, my parents have passed and I’m now in my early 50s and this place always brings back great memories of exploring with my mum and dad, and my dad telling me about when he was a kid and witnessing these exhibits first hand.
Lovely memories of visiting this museum in late 2007 with my husband. We were seeing the Princess Diana exhibition. My fave static exhibit was the space shuttle which you could walk through. Good times!
I remember the original power house that provided power for the trams which is partially incorporated into this building. I remember the large railway departure board seen here when it was in the Grand Concourse at Sydney's Central Station. The Ultimo Tram Depot building is also a part of the museum but not open to the public.
Defiantly will be missing the OG powerhouse museum when its gone, been there many, many times with multiple memories from the past and this has now reminded me to visit soon before closure.. so thanks for this video. :]
Went with my kid 2 years ago, was lots of fun, they hate the 80s make over for some reason so they will erase it for all history, I think it looks fine
The 80s make over is the best thing about it in my eyes! So nostalgic for me now.
Typical wokes.
@@tonymccarthy6713 who's woke?
the closure is for a refit
I thought they where moving it completly to parramatter
Wasn't the Powerhouse going to relocate to Parramatta? Why did the grubs demolish that beautiful Victorian mansion, Willow Grove in Parramatta?
Parramatta is now going to be an extra Powerhouse
Willow Grove was demolished? Gee i hope not!
Kind of like the Oak pub in Parramatta which was demolished for the Parramatta Light Rail but now it was determined that “Oak didn’t need to go”.
That's your grubby liberals for you. What a cock up that was. Greedy short sighted politicians. We'll never get that pub back now. The relocation of the powerhouse to Parramatta to put ugly defective units in its place proves this.
Thank you I have never been there..
I used to go there all the time Noo 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭🙁☹️☹️☹️
What camera are you using, mate? Looks good!
This museum was at its best when it first opened, and like every other museum just no funding to keep the exhibitions and displays in rotation and up to date.
The transport hall looks pretty bare these days z the Catalina flying boat used to be closer to the ceiling. Looks like they lowered it to fill the void.
The original plan for the tracks in the transport hall and through the goods line was so the could run trains back and forward. Never happened
" they had " slot car s " to drive or race !"
Been there years ago
Cool place hey? :)
yeah last time I was there, was on a school excursion
