Dear Jay, Thank you so much for reviewing our Wilmington Alto! We are constantly improving our instruments both in the set ups we do here in the states and by traveling to the manufacturers and helping them to improve. We’re all really happy that you like The Wilmington and how it plays! Based on your review and comments, we’ve changed the adhesive we use on the pearls and are working with the manufacturer to change the padding style which will allow us to more precisely adjust the pads here in the USA. Some other cool features that we love about the Wilmington Alto’s include: stainless steel screws (these will not rust), the black “felts” are a synthetic ultra-suede material, the oil you see is UltiMax Lubricant, a fully synthetic lubricant, the body tube and neck are solid Nickel Silver and the side keys all have contact points added for improved stability and regulation. Thanks again Jay for reviewing our Wilmington Alto Saxophone and to Everyone for their kind comments! Your reviews, comments and feedback are incredibly important in helping us constantly improve the quality of our instruments and products! Best, Curt Altarac MusicMedic
Curt, thanks for commenting and mentioning all those things I didn't talk about in the video. I suppose the nickel silver body and neck accounts for the warmer and richer sound from this horn. I know you said this resists knocks and dents but I didn't test this ; ) Very good to see how much you care about serving your customers and delivering a quality instrument at an affordable price.
Great, great sound; "right out of the bat" I could hear the difference, warmer-vintage sound. It called my attention the engraving, it seems to be in a higher profile (over the bell), Is that it? Is it on top of the already painted bell's body?
Reviewing my previous comment; Is the body sandblasted (not coated -painted/lacquered)? if it is, Congratulations!! you are creating something here! I have seen just a couple of special ordered horns with sandblasted work. It is highly expensive because it has been done after production; in your case, if you get it in as part of the fabrication process and within a controlled cost... congratulations again!!

This a great alto sax. It plays better than a lot of intermediate horns that I have tried. I play a 1948 Alto Buescher and a 1938 Tenor Buescher. My wife is playing the Wilmington Bass Clarinet that sounds and works almost to the professional level of other makers that are triple the cost. Jay, you rock.

Very cool looking horn, Jay! I'm not a big fan of that engraving but the contrast of the sandblasted silver to the gold keys is outstanding. It's nice to finally find a quality horn in a reasonable price range. Thanks for the review.
I purchased serial number 5 and I love the horn. I retired my mark vii for this horn. The folks at music medic are amazing and I can’t recommend this horn enough.

Jay I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and you are honestly my main saxophone teacher. Could you PLEASE do a review on the custom EXII Yamaha alto saxophone please? I would appreciate it a lot and I’m sure others would too.
I got a tenor made by Taishan - one of their high-end models-through a contact a few months back. Sells for around 800-1000 bucks equivalent in China. First horn for me. I am loving it. Tried a Yamaha at a local shop recently and I am convinced mine is as good if not better in quality. If you know the right people and where to look - you can get A+ quality stuff from China.
Superb review Jay, and good response from Music Medic given that there were a couple of idiosyncrasies, it's good for all your followers to know that you can give an honest review without interference, and, acting on the points that let the instrument down. On a personal note, as someone who has only been playing for over a year, it sounds and looks a beautiful instrument, one I would be quite happy to buy.
I admit I am sold on the Jay sound. His mouthpiece and reed as well as his long hours of practice over the years should make us all aware of the need for hard work. The horn looks fine and he uses it superbly. Which mouthpiece did you use Jay?
@@bettersax No surprise. I use the Meyer 5 Medium on my Alto. Very mellow. But it is the long, hard work on scales, chords and long notes that make the sound I want. However, I am impressed with your work on inexpensive horns. This Wilmington seems like a very good deal!
That's a really cool looking horn. Love that finish. I wish I could've gotten an unlacquered or a matte finish when I bought my horn, but I settled for a cognac lacquer, used, and saved 800 bucks.
I dont have the 1300 for it but, it sure is a nice looking saxophone. I would want mine in a rosegold pinky and gold forsure or blue..The custom classy vintage details are great! I always wanted to learn how to play sax.
What’s your opinion on Cannonball saxes? I play a Big Bell Series Cannonball Bari and it’s my most prized possession. I first started playing Bari sax about two years ago when I was 13 and I knew from the moment I picked it up that I wanted to go into music. I wanna have fun. I’d rather be homeless and have nothing but my sax to play for people and entertain them than be stuck in a job and situation I’m not happy in. I’m 15 now and, while I may not be the best, I’m still going strong and enjoying every minute I get with my horn in my hands.
Hi I'm 50 and I love saxophone music . I have never ever tried a wind instrument . I'm retired now and I'm looking to start playing the saxophone. I have a 1000 $ budget . My question is should I buy used or new . I was hoping to buy a good used one and get it service. Or should I just get new. Also I'm partial to alto saxophone 🎷 I love saxophone solo hits bright high notes and crisp lows . What would you say i should be looking to buy i was wondering about martin,or yamaha or do you know af better for same or less money
Thanks Jay I love the way that you play your horn. What is the name of this song that you are playing or is it made up. I'm 66 and still trying to find a way to improvise. I wish I could just pull out my horn and Be bop any thing. Can you help me with that please or point me in the right direction. Devoted fan been watching your videos for a couple of months now. Thanks
That was just me improvising over a blues progression. Have you taken my free Play Sax by Ear Course yet? This will help you get started improvising. Link in the video description.
Hi Jay, I am a big fan of you and your instructive videos. But what I regret is that lately there is a lot of vids on gear and stuff and not so much on the actual playing...
@@bettersax Thanks for your return. I have difficulties while improvising not to fall into the same phrasing everytime. For instance when improvising over ATTYA, I may use different notes over each chorus, but my phrases always seem to follow the same rythmic schedules, which are apperantly anchored in my head, and are difficult to get away from. So if you have some tips how to change this, that would be of an enormous help, and would definitely improve my playing. Thanks Jay!
@@bettersax agree. I'd personally go for "sax songs of the 1980's." Would be a fairly short video, as few are over about 8 bars. Pink Floyd, Shine on you Crazy Diamond live has Dick Parry playing BOTH in the same song. Very impressive! Lol. And for us lowly altos, you'd have Quarterflash, Harden my Heart, with Rindy Ross, also lead singer. Just for starters. I'd like to know how to pick stuff out by ear. I'd like to know what note you aim for to tune. On piano or the tuner app you recommended. I have both. I know it's a good sax day when my dog doesn't take off.
hi Jay, i've been a big fan of your videos . They are very informative. By any chance is it possible to do a review on the professional allora series alto and soprano saxophones. thanks
Hi Jay, I wondered if you would recommend this over other intermediate horns. The Yamaha YAS-280 and a few Selmer horns come to mind. I tend to enjoy a neutral to slightly warm sound, and I am in love with the vintage look. However, we all know that the sound, quality, and durability are so important. Would you buy one of these over the others or over a used $1300-1500 horn? I'm currently playing the Jean Paul AS400 that you recommended that I picked up for $250 barely used. I love it, but may upgrade later in the year. Would this be a great upgrade or should I hold out until I have $2K to spend? Thank you in advance for your advice.
I started to follow this guy because the first time I saw one of his videos he shared the most valuable thing to become a better saxophonist: his learnings through experience as a musician and teacher. But since that video every new video I see it's the same: product promotions "as an opinion". I understand that in someway it's necessary but, the most basic MRKTG rule says 2 genuinely interesting videos per 1 one of sale. Also I'm aware of the disclaimer, "the commission helps support the channel and allows us to continue to make videos like this".. ¿¿but what for more videos like this? Just saying.. as one form of reciprocity for that incredible first video I mention above. Cheers!
One of the reason's I've been doing a bunch of product reviews is because they are the most popular type of video on my channel. Sometimes I make teaching videos that I think are presenting extremely valuable information, and they get very few views. I also receive many questions every single day from viewers about what to buy, so I'm trying to give people helpful advice on topics they are most interested in. I'm not getting paid for making these product videos and the affiliate commissions do not add up to much believe me. I have dozens of teaching videos for free here on RUclips, check out the rest of them. Maybe you'd like to take the free course I offer as well? I'll be posting more teaching videos soon even if they are less popular.
@@bettersax Thank you very much for your time and interest to generate this feedback. I understand the importance of the viewers demands. What a pity that the product issues consume so much time and interest vs the learning process...I'm not against that kind of content it's just that often those topics, for me, take away the attention from the core of any instrument: the music. However I will look for the rest of the teaching videos and the course that you mention. Thanks again for your answer. Cheers!
I really like the look and sound of that! I'll have to keep an eye on Wilmington, thanks for the review! I was hoping to get your opinion on another brand kinda in that price range. Are you (or is anyone else here) familiar with Kessler saxophones? A while ago I stumbled across a Kessler intermediate alto second-hand that was in like-new shape for about $450 and while it did need a set-up, I was really impressed by it, especially considering they retail brand-new for $869. I was thinking I may eventually order another one from them, but the price point worries me. It's a USA-made brand, but I know even then quality control can be a bit iffy at those prices. Is it a brand worth keeping an eye on, or did I just get lucky with this one?
It would be great if Music Medic will send you an improved model after this one’s review and critic. That will seal it for a lot of fence sitters who saw the issues. Thanks Jay for your nice videos.
Jay, I don't know if my suggestion to review the Wilmington horn had anything to do with your getting one for review, but, if so, I take full credit. I have been interested to see your reviews of the Yanigasawa horns and have my eye on a 901. Are you going to do any baritone reviews?
I did a Yanagisawa review a couple weeks ago. The title is: The Best Saxophone in the World.... for me. Baritones are pretty complicated with shipping and space etc... I'll figure something out though.
I'm not sold. Still not enough to upgrade from my Mendini. I've had someone look at it after 8 years and my pads are still good and only needed slight adjustments. The Mendini was 1000 dollars cheaper.
Good morning Jay l will be coming to the USA in a few months. Is it possible to order this instrument but it must have the adjustment screws on the right and left hand stacks.
looks like a Yani copy. Sounds nice. Not big on the Finnish. Do they come in other finishes? I recently acquired a used Yanigasawa A-901 for a little more 1475. Plays great and sounds great. Will be interested to see how the Wilmington fares long term
Dear Frank, I hope you'll allow me to help Jay with this answer. When we designed the instrument we decided not to put adjustment screws on the stack keys. We considered the options and although adjustment screws make for quicker adjustments/repairs, we felt that the longer lasting adjustment/repair of having materials replaced (as we do in our Sax ProShop) would be best for the instrument and the player. Also because this instrument is at a price where students and school band programs can purchase it, we wanted as few parts as possible that could come loose or get lost. So far the response from our technician friends has been positive, as these instruments tend to come back into the shop less and need fewer adjustments. Best, Rich@musicmedic.com
It seems to me that you had a pearl pop off one of the really low end saxophones you tested recently. And I think it was the same key too. Maybe it isn't the horn? Maybe you have a really grippy finger? ;-) Thank you for reviewing saxes like this. I am not about to change horns. It is nice to see what is out there in this way.
I bought an intermediate soprano directly from a Chinese factory with a good reputations several years ago. It was pretty good at first. The position of the left hand was a little cramped and awkward, but I got used to that. It played in tune and was serviceable for about two years. Then, it started with the corks, things started falling off. It got to the point that every practice session would end as a repair session. I kept thinking there is only so much that can fall off. Finally, the screw-end of the axel for the C/Eb key stripped out, and the pads would not seal properly. All of the repairmen near me refused to work on Chinese-made horns,. Each had their own reasons. I was basically stuck until I got a new horn. I explored getting a new sax from China or Taiwan, but I ultimately went with a 1980s soprano from a top maker in fair shape that I had repaired to very good condition all told for about the price of a new intermediate level sax from China. It has not been a year yet, so far so good, and I have great hopes. I share my anecdote not to dissuade buyers from buying Chinese made saxes. I’ver heard that Taiwanese and Vietnamese-built saxes are made to last longer than those from China. I just want buyers to enter into this decision with eyes wide open, and encourage them to check if, or on what terms, their local repairman will work on Chinese saxes. I’d also like to encourage Curt to look beyond initial quality. I am convinced that savvy Chinese manufacturers know pretty close how long the materials they use in an instrument will last, but some play dumb. I contacted the factory I purchased my sax after about three years. The sales rep said, “Three years is about right for the price." I told her I thought if her saxes did not last at least 5 to 7 years her company would get a bad reputation. I don’t know if they changed anything, but they raised their retail prices about $100 soon after.
I would love to hear you speak and test a soprano - I'm an older guy - a tenor player, Berklee, played with many well known people but those days are long gone. I don't like playing alto as much, but I like soprano - and since I don't play in public anymore, an inexpensive soprano is ideal for me. It's light, easy to play, but harder to play in tune. Still, for what I use it for, the soprano is perfect. What are your thoughts on those imports you've been demonstrating for a soprano?
I know that there is only so much that can be gleaned from an add, but would you be up to looking at a Craigslist add for a tenor sax I found, and providing your perspective?
I have never heard of this saxophone before, but I quite like the look and the engraving on the bell, definitely has a vintage vibe. I like the sound it has too, but I don't think I'd like to have a sax with the minor issues yours had, the leaks and key pearl falling off out of the box. I have a Yamaha YAS-280 and got it because of the build quality and 6 months in and no issues. Could you do a video on student/intermediate Soprano saxophones? I am thinking of getting a straight one this year if I can afford it. One I was interested in was a Windcraft straight Soprano from Dawkes Music in England, I saw their videos about it and it sounded good and its made in Taiwan so expecting its made well. Could you see if you can get one to review?
Thank you for doing this real review. I have been considering this saxophone for several months. I have also been considering a vintage sax that is for sale in my local area, and sending it in to the "Medics". Have you reviewed any rebuilds they have done?
Hey, guys, I'm an intermediate player (around ABRSM 5/6 level) and I'm looking for some fast, impressive jazz or pop music to learn. I've looked at some of the works by Karen Street but i am looking for more solo studies to be able to occasionally perform. All response to this will be very welcome.
@@bettersax Yeah, depending on my general health and finances, a Yamaha YAS 280 would be the one I would go for. I am teaching myself the Flute and Clarinet at the moment, albeit slowly.
The Yamaha is likely to be better made, it uses real point screws which will ensure that the key work will be tight for many years, replacement parts are easy to source and a much better re-sale value if you decide to move on to a better horn sometime later. This horn is too expensive for what it is.
Jay, I was wondering how this compares to the Jean Paul AS-400? Your initial review of the AS-400 seemed to indicate to me that it was perhaps better built, or at least better setup. And it also had an excellent case. If the opportunity arises, I would love a review of the AS-800, which is in direct competition with the Wilmington at around $1450.
Can you please do a review of the Thomann MK IV Handmade Alto Sax? I think it's a gorgeous sax and I wanna know how it comes. The MK III is also gorgeous but I can tell improvements were made to the MK IV Also just Thomann saxophones in general. There's literally no coverage on how good or bad these horns are.
No Matter What Horn He Plays It Would Not Sound Like Shit Cause He Has Been Playing For A Long Time And He Developed A Good Tone And A Good Embouchure!😅😅😅 Keep It Up!

The gloves that come with your sax are usually low quality anyways, and should be instantly replaced by some proper professional ones.

Jay I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and you are honestly my main saxophone teacher. Could you PLEASE do a review on the custom EXII Yamaha alto saxophone please? I would appreciate it a lot and I’m sure others would too.
Jay.. would you do a comparison and make a video over the amazon lacquered one and this horn.
It would be a great video and helpful too..
I liked the sound and projection. Good looking horn!
Yeah the sound is surprising. The body is made out of nickel silver apparently and that may help give it the darker and richer sound.
Beautiful and relaxing playing ⭐
Thank you
Superb review Jay, and good response from Music Medic given that there were a couple of idiosyncrasies, it's good for all your followers to know that you can give an honest review without interference, and, acting on the points that let the instrument down.
On a personal note, as someone who has only been playing for over a year, it sounds and looks a beautiful instrument, one I would be quite happy to buy.
Dang I wish they had these when I started playing
Thats for Intermidiate
Hi!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and advise.
I’ll like to see you checking and playing the Allora the boss 2 alto sax.
Thanks.
It sounds great
I admit I am sold on the Jay sound. His mouthpiece and reed as well as his long hours of practice over the years should make us all aware of the need for hard work. The horn looks fine and he uses it superbly. Which mouthpiece did you use Jay?
David, that is the 100 year anniversary New York Meyer 6 great mouthpiece.
Beautiful horn!
Sounds great and love the look if it.
He sounds better on this than the selmer. 😂 The intonation is spot on.
Sounds Good to me!
Dang what a sound!!
Looks good
Interested in the intonation on a soprano in this series. Great review 👍🏿
Can you do a review on the sakkusu alto and soprano saxophone and maybe even the tenor and bari?
Im Waiting For It Too 😅😅😅Can't Wait How This Professional Sax Player Play It!
Hi Jay, the line you played before the pearl popped off - wondering if that's anything in particular?
Love your reviews!!
I've got a lot of playing videos in the works as well. What topic would you like to see next?
@@bettersax Thanks for your return. I have difficulties while improvising not to fall into the same phrasing everytime. For instance when improvising over ATTYA, I may use different notes over each chorus, but my phrases always seem to follow the same rythmic schedules, which are apperantly anchored in my head, and are difficult to get away from. So if you have some tips how to change this, that would be of an enormous help, and would definitely improve my playing. Thanks Jay!
@@bettersax agree. I'd personally go for "sax songs of the 1980's."
Would be a fairly short video, as few are over about 8 bars.
Love the channel ! and your playing ...... any chance of you doing an episode on the Baritone ?
Wish I had that I'm still in high school and play a tenor
hi Jay, i've been a big fan of your videos . They are very informative. By any chance is it possible to do a review on the professional allora series alto and soprano saxophones. thanks
Can you do a review on a Chinese bari. I'm looking for a bari for cheap that can play well and nobody near me is selling
You'd be best to buy a used bari that is a known brand. Even if it is dented that just adds character and it definitely will have better tone.
I think you can't go wrong stalking Ebay. That's how i got my alto.
Look for "make offer." Ask them what's fair for them and jump if it is.
I ordered a Tiashan Winds bari it’s great
LOL ...You are funny, Jay ! I like the music too ....
Music medic Rich Zimmerman a good friend and great tenor player 👌
Hi Jay,
I wondered if you would recommend this over other intermediate horns.
I Kessler to send me one, but didn't hear back from them.
Ah dang. Well I hope they get back to you! Thanks for the reply
Give away!? :D looks great! You make it sound great!
Thumbs up from Manipur, India👍👍
I want alto sax
Is it possible to order this instrument but it must have the adjustment screws on the right and left hand stacks.
you should review a cannonball
looks like a Yani copy. Sounds nice. Not big on the Finnish. Do they come in other finishes? I recently acquired a used Yanigasawa A-901 for a little more 1475. Plays great and sounds great. Will be interested to see how the Wilmington fares long term
Sounds like you got a great deal.
Thanks Jay...another good review. I'd be interested to know if there are any adjusters on the stacks.
No screw adjusters other than the standard ones for G# and bis Bb
Best,
Rich@musicmedic.com
Good evening if they put adjustment screws on the right and left hand stacks l would certainly purchase this horn.
Seems ok, as for myself I'd rather go with a used horn from Yamaha or Yanagasawi that is close to the same price or even just a little more.
I'll give this to a person in my band class that doesn't play alto sax very well and magically they'll play better.
Hi, I have a question, would you rather recommend this horn or Yamaha yas-280? 🎷
You sound great man, who do you listen to?
I WAS ABOUT TO ORDER ONE BUT BECAUSE OF LEAKS AND THE BUTTOM FALLING OFF I SAY HELL NOOO!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! FOR THE VIDEO
How was Berklee? I want to go there online. They have a lot of interesting classes.
You should unbox the Eastman 52nd street alto
I asked them to send me one. Still waiting...
Sounds good to me,
Hey, guys, I'm an intermediate player (around ABRSM 5/6 level) and I'm looking for some fast, impressive jazz or pop music to learn. I've looked at some of the works by Karen Street but i am looking for more solo studies to be able to occasionally perform. All response to this will be very welcome.
Hi Jay,
Would this be the equivalent of a Yamaha YAS 480?
Thanks, William from Australia.
I can't say since I don't have a recent YAS480 to compare to I'll be reviewing the 280 very soon though.
@@bettersax
Yeah, depending on my general health and finances, a Yamaha YAS 280 would be the one I would go for.
This horn is too expensive for what it is.
please review for the tenor sax
Jay, I was wondering how this compares to the Jean Paul AS-400? Your initial review of the AS-400 seemed to indicate to me that it was perhaps better built, or at least better setup. And it also had an excellent case. If the opportunity arises, I would love a review of the AS-800, which is in direct competition with the Wilmington at around $1450.
I will review that if I get my hands on one.
what a beautiful looking saxophone. have you tried any of the Trevor James saxophones before?
Can you please do a review of the Thomann MK IV Handmade Alto Sax?
I think it's a gorgeous sax and I wanna know how it comes.
The MK III is also gorgeous but I can tell improvements were made to the MK IV
Also just Thomann saxophones in general.
There's literally no coverage on how good or bad these horns are.
No Matter What Horn He Plays It Would Not Sound Like Shit Cause He Has Been Playing For A Long Time And He Developed A Good Tone And A Good Embouchure!😅😅😅
Keep It Up!
5:40 that’s the best laugh I’ve ever heard my friend
Please do a video with Barone instruments, They're really great and at a better price than any other around... by the way.. and Dakota straight?? ;)
Can you review a (somewhat) cheap C melody Saxophone? I've seen a few on Bay and I want to know if they're okay to buy.
I’d like to see a review of the SeaWind sax. It’s a pro level horn and developed by Canada’s Phil Dwyer.
I Jay;
When do you do a P. Mauriat Sax Le Bravo 200 review, and tell to everybody you opinion.
Best Rgards;
Joao Medeiros
Hey Jay,
Have you tried a Jupiter?
