Hey Jay, I got this saxophone a couple of weeks ago, as I finally decided to get started with this life-long dream. Apparently, something went wrong during Fedex shipping and was slightly damaged. Mr. Zenderman, this company's president, IMMEDIATELY send me a replacement sax, he also took his time explaining many things about the instrument, and I was in awe with this superb Customer Service. This sax is definitely a bargain for the price! I can't wait to start with your courses and the one-on-one classes with you. Cheers!

that's great to hear. I've heard this from so many people and that's one of the main reasons I have no hesitation recommending the Jean Paul instruments. It's great to know that somebody cares about the customer even when it's not a very expensive instrument.

    • @yourbarista
      @yourbarista 4 года назад +13

I also rec'd a slightly damaged tenor, and customer service was prompt in replying to my email, though I didn't rate attention from the president or any explanations. Ultimately, Jean Paul came through, but not without some frustration. I did hear quickly from two different people. The first said he'd let me know where to send the instrument for repair 'tomorrow'. Three days later I'd still heard nothing, and wrote again. I heard from another person this time, who said he'd send me a return label 'tomorrow,' and again I heard nothing for a few days. I'd heard only good things about their customer service, but with that second email I was beginning to worry. What was especially frustrating, and potentially a bit embarrassing, was that, though the sax was unplayable, it really seemed to me it was probably a minor adjustment issue. Trouble is, I know nothing about how to adjust a saxophone, so return seemed the only option. The good news is that Jean Paul did send me the return label, and the sax is now on its way to Florida. Here's hoping the repaired instrument can survive shipping this time around. Jean Paul does seem to merit their excellent reputation. Incidentally, Jay sounded great on the Jean Paul, even with the mediocre mouthpiece. I have a strong suspicion I'll still only be able to make noises few would recognize as music.

Hi, I’m in high school now and I’ve been playing clarinet for 4 years. Last year in marching band, someone let me play their tenor sax, and it was a lot of fun! Especially it being like a clarinet, only the finger notes on the saxophone are like that of a clarinet on a high register. I’m really grateful for this video because I’m so close to purchasing the Jean Paul saxophone and it looks especially promising for it’s price! Yeah! I’m really excited!

I've had the TS-400 for about a year and I can't say enough good things about it! I have been playing a Selmer Series Action II (~$7000) for 25 years and I find, to my great surprise, the sound from this sax to be superior! It arrived with a screw missing on the C key, which was quickly corrected after contacting customer service. I am VERY pleased with this instrument and find myself exclusively playing the tenor these days. Construction wise, It has been holding well , producing a lovely tone! I strongly recommend saving your money and purchase this sax.

Thank you for your review!! I haven't played in years and just got this sax today (Jan 2021) based in no small part from your review. I played a Yanigisawa T-800 ages ago so was dubious of a "budget" horn. Like you, as I examined this horn upon opening it, was impressed with how well it was set up. In fact, the only thing I could find was that the right hand keys were ever so slightly not quite closing the bis key, but that was a 10 second adjustment. Also, I found no play in any keys on my example, and had no lacquer problems. I never tried the factory mouthpiece and went straight to a Vandoren V16 T7 rubber. Oh, and I'd add that the included neck strap is sketchy at best. I would NOT trust the plastic clasp for long. Other than my chops being nowhere near what they used to, I could immediately play this horn top to bottom. It felt quite free blowing and responsive with a great, rich tone and very snappy action. The key placement in a couple spots was "different" from what I remember on my Yani, but nothing too strange. I'm looking forward to getting back in shape. I can't recommend this horn enough, and thank you for your review and other awesome content.

I bought the silver tenor a month ago and my only regret is not buying it sooner! I watched this video and another RUclipsrs (sorry Jay!) at least 300 times before finally pulling the trigger on one. My sax arrived in 3 days, is super responsive, BEAUTIFUL, and played right out of the box. I let the stigma of it not being a Selmer or Yamaha bother me for awhile and it almost kept me from a really great horn. If you’re on the fence go for it. It does not look or feel cheap in a shape way or form and I was really surprised by the quality and mad at myself for worrying about the “brand” name even though Jay gave it his blessing. I’m starting back on sax after a 20 year hiatus and so very grateful to have found this recommendation.

Jay -- Great review and very helpful for a range of player abilities. As a long-time performing jazzer, I was looking for an affordable backup tenor. In 2020, I purchased the TS-400 directly from Jean Paul. You're right, they offer great customer service and they genuinely support musicians of all stripes. The sax arrived in perfect condition and was set up and ready to play out of the box. I encountered a couple nit-picky issues as you did, but my local shop took care of these few minor tweaks in a couple of minutes. (Surprise... I had to do this with my Yamaha as well).
My primary horn is a Yamaha YTS-875EX --- as you know, an absolutely superb instrument. I play tested and compared the two tenors and was pleasantly surprised. This may seem like a bit of a stretch, but I can honestly report that the similarities of these two horns far outweigh their differences... especially after installing my Yamaha V1 neck and my Theo Wanne mouthpiece on the Jean Paul.
It is now four years later and the TS-400 still plays fantastic. Other than the annual shop tune-up that all saxophones require if played regularly, I have had zero issues with the Jean Paul. If it weren't for the subtle differences in the ergonomics of these horns, the joy of playing this great Jean Paul tenor and the beautiful music it creates are certainly comparable to my professional saxophone. Thanks much for your detailed reviews on RUclips. You are a valued resource for many aspiring and professional musicians. Warm regards, Dr. A

I just recently started playing my sax again after taking over 20 years off. I now play in a cover band and do gigs about 6 times a year. I got this sax from Costco in December. All previous horns I've owned were bought used and I wanted a new one of my own. Unboxing this baby was thrilling, unfortunately, I had an issue with a horrible squeak. In all honesty, the squeak was probably my fault. However, I spoke with Enrique at Jean Paul and he wanted to make sure I was happy with the horn. He arranged to have the sax shipped back at their expense. Jean Paul not only sent me a new horn, but Enrique also included a video of their tech playing the horn so I could see it was in great condition. I received the new sax within a few days and couldn't be happier. It sounds and plays great, especially compared to what I had before. I had a gig this weekend and got great reviews from our fans. I also bought a Jean Paul trumpet for my son, which he loves. Costco currently sells this horn as a TS - 700 for $649. It's the same horn, but the package includes a very basic music stand.

The "basic" music stand is a POS. But you do get a $50 discount by buying from Costco - plus what almost amounts to a life time return guarantee. Note - at this time (YE 2019) buying direct from Jean Paul - NO SALES TAX is being charged

I run an ‘80s series 62 Yamaha alto sax. I toured Europe with it and, in the states. Love it! I picked it over the Super Action 80 on an at home test. Nowadays as a dad, I have to be more budget minded.

I would almost say stay with the Jean Paul! I love the smoothness of the sound. It's not harsh but warm and dark with lots of soul! Sell your other horns and take yourself out to an expensive restaurant many times go traveling and look how much money you still would have saved. Beautiful man! Keep playing it! You can't go wrong!

Thank you so much for this video. I own a jean paul tenor sax the exact same one. I bring mine into the repair shop in the next town he told me some keys where loose and a couple springs but nothing much where me I can tell. I just started almost 3 years ago and I have a Yamaha mouthpiece and the original mouthpiece but the sound a little airy like when you played with the stock mouthpiece and played it again with your better one I did hear a difference it sounds like more air was going into the horn then when you played with the better mouthpiece. I did not know the sound I hear was coming from the mouthpiece. I will get a better quality one soon. The sticky G# key always was a problem but that is what practice is all about. I won't challenge you to who can play or sound better because my jean paul tenor can never compare to your professional grade sax. I do have a loose neck that drives my crazy every time I move the neck swings to one side or the other but then again it is playable and soon I will get a better saxophone but for now it is great. Thank you for your review now you know what I have and I have to read sheet music I just can't play a song without it. Why do they say play by ear then they say to read music? Pete

Great video and great cooperation Jay ! There is a HUGE difference between the three saxophones and a huge difference between the two mouthpieces.
I wonder, if I want to buy a tenor saxophone for beginners, but it is important that it be professional and hold it for years, which saxophone is the best and most recommended? Again, for beginners.
I guess your mouthpiece and your reed are meant for professionals, so here too, which mouthpiece is most recommended for beginners in tenor sax (but no less professional)? Is there a huge difference between alto and tenor in the level of difficulty? weight?
I'll be glad if you could do some video about that.
    Many thanks in advance!!
    Victorin.

I bought a TS400 about two weeks ago. Worked OK out of the box but the High F key is slanted (not sure if it is meant to be this way) so I may have to return it. I also noticed and was concerned about the thickness of some of the key corks, esp.the side keys-seemed way too thin. The box is very well constructed but in my opinion has a design flaw: The mouthpiece compartment is only big enough for certain mouthpieces like the one that it ships with it. My OttoLink Rubber 7* mpc will not fit in this compartment and there is really no other place in the case to put it securely.

I have one of these saxophones. On mine the neck cork was to thick so the mouthpiece would only go on about half way. Also the intonation is off quite a bit from 1st to 2nd octaves. My case also has about an inch of movement from side to side and from end to end.

I bought one of these after watching your AS400 review - thanks for following up with a review of the tenor.
While I'm a lifelong pianist of 40+ years this is my first wind instrument, so a dozen practice sessions in I'm still on off-key long tones (the Tonal Energy app is great, but "ouch!" on the reality check!).
With that caveat over my comments, I love this sax! Even with my novice embouchure, untrained lungs and flimsy diaphragm, the sound I'm producing is reasonably round and somewhat full.
The challenge I had getting the lowest notes was mostly overcome in a few practices, and the warble I sometimes get in the mid-upper range using the octave key I put down to embouchure error.
While JP also threw in their 'pro' mouthpiece with my deal, I'm only using the standard one to start with, as I want enough proficiency to tell the difference before I switch over.
In short, I'm loving this instrument. It's making me feel good about the sounds I'm producing.
When I'm playing in my head the sound is Scott Hamilton or Stan Getz, so to have Jean Paul lessen the shock of reality by giving me a warm (ish) sound as a beginner, out of the box, is simply fabulous!
When it comes to adding an alto to the collection I'll definitely be going JP.
Thanks Jay for putting out such a fabulous collection of videos.

For an even better deal: If you chat with the JP sales online and mention Costco's $649 price they will match that price with a special code you enter at checkout. I got one when Costco had a sale on their JP Tenor TS-700 (same as TS-400) and saved even more from Jean Paul's website. The only issue I have had is playing in tune across all entire range of the sax but I have only played soprano prior to getting this tenor so my chops may not be quite ready yet. Thanks much for the reviews .

I just ordered a refurb of this Tenor from Jean Paul. After watching this video, I was thinking of getting a better mouthpiece. (I played years ago and have owned saxes over the years, I play keys and guitar in a wedding band) I have a Selmer Goldentone 3, but have heard they can be stuffy. I was thinking of the Yamaha 5C after seeing one of your videos, and I heard the Giardinelli Tenor mouthpiece was a good starter piece. Any thoughts?? Thank YOU, and thanx so much for your videos.

Would the Silver plated TS-400SP finish make any or much of a difference. The way it is marketed is that it is more of an intermediate level horn versus a beginner horn like the TS-400. Miss my horn and playing, looking to pick it back up. Thanks!
