24:40......... YES! Experienced that same situation. "I want to go back to samples" after recording live orchestra with Prague Orchestra (and spending tons of money). I was dumbfounded. ughh.. This whole world of film scoring is a challenge.
Massive fan of this guy back in the late 90s. I didn't know he was still doing things. I thought he was an electronic musician for a bit and then faded away. I've actually still been hearing his music in movies and didn't realize it. His Junkie XL stuff with Rudeboy from Urban Dance Squad was some of my favorite stuff back then. Melange, Billy Club, Roster... those songs were blowing my old Nissan up back then.
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does any of you know a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost my password. I love any help you can give me!
Whoa, I never thought these two worlds would come together. This is like the nervous moment before your two groups of friends finally meet... and then everything goes great.
Just watching the ordinary conversation between two masterminds, laughing, cursing sometimes :) is such an amazing energy uplift :) thanks Rick, cheers!
What an amazing interview! Tom is just brilliant and shares such a wealth of knowledge and the same goes to Rick. You guys are simply the best! My favorite RUclips channels
Fantastic... I love the engagement of both in this interview. Rick, your expressions (empathy) are priceless. Great questions, great answers and insights. Just awesome. This is one that will stand up to repeat viewing for sure.
Wow. This video is amazing. Tom's channel is an amazing and the first channel that really breaks down film scoring in the most accessible way. It's a great analog to Rick's channel from the contemporary rock aspect. Thanks guys, this really means a lot to us. You guys are embracing the most valuable aspect that youtube provides - education. I would love a thousand more hours of this. Keep it up Rick!
God.. I’m so so grateful for you and Tom. Thank God there are still super talented people yet super generous to share this gold & gems. Thank you, Rick!
Fantastic. I consistently have the same experience with both of your videos: first, I think I’ll probably hear stuff I’ve heard before and then I’m totally blown away by brand new thoughts/techniques, etc. You guys are both outstanding and doing the Lord’s work out here. ✌🏼
This interview is extremely insightful. Just from watching I feel like I'm in a university lecture about film scoring. Great stuff! Thank you tons, keep it coming!
It was really warm, as you call it. The fantastic atmosphere. Two guys just chatting about things they love. It really cool. Thank you for this interview and for your channel!
Thanks Rick (again) for letting me know more of Tom and his great work in film scoring. The fact that you make feel people close to the guests is simple proof that you're a great teacher and host. Great video!
What a surprise! Great to see you both together for a very informative and fun interview!!! I have been following both of you guys for over a year now. Thank you for all that you share with us.
Haha yes I love that he just talks about 80s Miles for a few minutes!!! He's like "while I'm here with you Rick let me nerd out about jazz fusion for a little bit..."
Thuis is so great! I remember seeing Tom with his band 'Weekend at Waikiki' at the OJC Staddijk, Nijmegen in the Netherlands. That was a long time ago (mid eighties I guess?). I still remember that concert and I went to see two or three concert each week and I forgot most of them, but not Weekend at Waikiki. So why do I remember that gig? I mean, I remember I thought it was great (even though I don't remember the music itself), I remember the name of the band (very important if you want a career) and I remember I had a wonderful evening and I really enjoyed myself. Now, Tom Holkenborg is a very clever man. He is now and he was back then. What he did was quite simple. He just made sure I would never forget that gig, because he and his band changed the whole place. They used fake plants and camo nets and other stuff. Every band I saw there played on that same stage, under the same lights, in the same room. Tom and his friends changed all that, so I remember it even to this day. I still use this story to tell young bands that they don't need thousands of euro's to be recognised. Again, I've seen many young bands, plenty of them were pretty good, but I forgot everything about it. I can't remember the songs of Tom's band, but atleast I remember it was good, I remember I had a wonderful time and, most importantly, I still remember the name of the band. And all because of such a simple Idea. When Tom did his remix (?) of Elvis' 'A little less conversation', I thought that was great and I was truely proud of him. And now, with his film music, and not the dumbest movies either, in a very difficult world with a lot of competition...., man, that amazes me! The guy of Weekend at Waikiki.... I've had my dreams back then. Tom worked hard to live my dreams. He deserves it! Thank you for the great interview, Rick!
I was absolutely floored by this video. Thank you so much for doing it. I had a huge argument with my son because he said that he didn't need to graduate from high school because he had RUclips. I went ballistic but didn't Mr. Holkenborg just validate that in a sense? Thank God he did graduate and maybe because my interests are varied, RUclips stuff finds me... a lot of stuff finds me. Interesting amazing stuff... Honestly, I could go to school on RUclips. Seriously. A friend of mine who's a doctor told me that when she has to do a surgical procedure that she hasn't done in a long time, she finds the procedure on RUclips! Damn... For me it was the last concert Jobim did in Brazil with Jazz artists from America. I think Herbie Hancock and Joe Henderson were there. One of my favorite songs in Life is Girl From Ipanema. Growing Up, it introduced me to Brazilian music. That and Brasil ’66. Anyway during the concert they’re playing an Instrumental Girl From Ipanema and Jobim walks over to Herbie on the piano and plays, the chords to Take the A Train! That was his inspiration for Girl From Ipanema! To me, it was a validation for growing up in the tradition. Watching you guys talk, I felt like I was sitting in the room with you. And Rick, I don’t even know how I got wind of you but I’ve learned a lot already. I’m a couple of years away from retirement. I think I want to follow in the Junkie XL lifestyle. Right now, as soon as I have a vacation, I switch from working from 9-5p to composing from 9p-5a! So now, I have to subscribe to Junkie XL. No Sleep…
He has the coolest walls ever. Also, I love the way the room sounds even though it's probably far from the standard "acoustically correct" sounding room.
gr8 seeing them together: two of my fav RUclips musical lighthouses (soundhouses?) . Thx guys! A special ❤ to Tom I had the pleasure to see on stage and meet backstage a long time ago, at the Paris Rex Club, when he was half part of Nerve... twas in the early 90s and I was in the indus-electronic-synth scene too
GREAT INTERVIEW! The nightmare scenario would have been that the camera was focused on you guys for the first 2 minutes, and then it might have re-focused on the background for the rest of the interview. This would have left the entire interview completely out of focus. You got lucky . . . . The solution is to put the video camera in Manual focus so it stays locked on the subjects. Also, using a high F stop number would have allowed the background to be in sharp focus too. In this case, the background would be nice to be in sharp focus. Consider using lav microphones on each person, routing each mic to its own channel on the camera. This will yield cleaner and more present audio, without so much room sound, that can be better processed later. Loved this interview!!!
James Bernard was the Dracula composer, and he had a long career after Dracula. He created many classic British film scores from the late 50s into the mid 70s, then made something of a comeback in his final years as a new generation discovered him. He's one of my favorite composers.
Hi Rick, I'm a new subscriber but I've been watching your videos for a long time. I would like to thank you for all this, it's unbelievable how much knowledge, information and inspiration you can get from people like you. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Junkie XL interview. Keep up the good work bro and thanks for the knowledge you bring to us. Much love from Germany
Wonderful video. Film scores, especially John Williams, was the first type of music that I fell in love with. It was also a great gateway for me into the larger world of classical/orchestral music.
Fantastic... Very interesting hearing Tom's history, musical influences. Humble and great person. Rick you are a great person as well. Really enjoyed this video. I hope to meet you in person someday and maybe have the opportunity for you to hear my musical compositions. Thanks...
Great interview, and as a huge fan of Blade Runner I have to agree with Junkie. Slight mistake though: James Bernard (Dracula) was born in 1925 and passed away in 2001. In the electronic only film score genre, there's the quite visionary (for its time, 1956) and very avantgarde Forbidden Planet ;-)
Hi Rick love your videos !!!! Can i make one suggestion, loose the auto focus, if you have a sit down wide shot like this frame up the shot manually, your not moving from the chairs so no need for focus adjustments. Cheers mate Your musical genius have inspired me.
Lovely to see two people together from whom ive learnt so much

Thanks Jeff!
Good job Jeff

Two of my favourites in a single RUclips video.A great conversation indeed. Thanks,Rick!

What an amazing interview! Tom is just brilliant and shares such a wealth of knowledge and the same goes to Rick. You guys are simply the best! My favorite RUclips channels
RUclips is arguably the greatest instructional vehicle of all time.
I just love this! Getting to hear Tom twice in a week with my favorite people! Thanks Tom and Rick❣️
I loved Warren's video with Tom as well! Double whammy!

Fantastic- Tom is a real treasure, and so open with his experience and work. Thanks Rick
thanks, rick - for the opportunity to watch this interesting video.

When you feel like you're sitting in a 3rd seat across from them, rather than behind the computer.. What a great down-to-earth interview!
Thank you Rick! and Tom. We are blessed. Love the coffee and wine on line purchasing. So true.
thank so much for this Rick...like you, Tom is one of the most generous out there giving us access such valuable lessons
It was really warm, as you call it. The fantastic atmosphere. Two guys just chatting about things they love. It really cool. Thank you for this interview and for your channel!
His breakdown of Furiosa's Theme from a couple years back is still one of my favorite youtube videos to date.
