The movie was filmed in the area of Loutraki in Greece with the assistance of a lot of Greek citizens and soldiers form the Greek army that participated on behalf of the-then- Royal House of Greece assisting the film making. As there were no experience on film making, the-never again- participants that they were playing as ancient soldiers, often forgot their watches on their hand, or they were looking directly to the camera wondering if they are doing alright everything, something that drove the director mad and had to make the scenes all over again. Somewhere on the film, during a battle scene, an aeroplane in the sky can be seen also. Nevertheless, it still is a very good movie and has a very nice approachment on the ethos of Hellenes.
This reminds me of German/YU coproduction Winetou films based on Carl May books. It was in early 60's filmed in the area of Plitvice lakes in ex Yugoslavia. It was funny enough to hear Apachi and Komanchi tribes speaking german, and same story with the watches on their hands, and during the Indian attack on the farm, up on the hill you can see the bus full of tourists passing by.....I remember the duel scene on the waterfalls - the main actors are fighting with the knives, and on the rock in the background was graffity, something like "Mark loves Jenny 💘"- unforgetible!
@@Vilppy 0:34 You can see the point of impact. By the time the practical effects were very good. There I see a persian soldier wounded by a javelin who didn't go through the armor on his neck. Fun fact: Zack Snyder relied on this "mistake" for leonidas' scene throwing the spear to Xerxes cheek?
It's really not that bad. Both movies have their flaws, but many Greeks online say this older movie is more accurate and enjoyable to them. Plus, the main theme is freakin epic!
I saw this at the theater when I was 10 and it was one of the best movies I have seen for the time period. Loved Richard Egan. I liked that they showed the other Greeks fighting. In reality, after the spear stabs you, the weight of the pole moves its tip up, like a lever, and makes a wound larger as your flesh is torn out. It usually falls out (could also stay in) and causes massive bleeding. I know this because I was there, with 300 Spartans, so many years ago...

I know it’s due to lazy casting but a lot of the persian army was recruited from places where people were white back than, persians must have been lighter skinned then compared to now considering they are indo Europeans (aryan)
It's really not that bad. The armor and battle scenes are apparently more historically accurate than 300. What's very interesting is they put a subtle anti-Communist theme into it (an interesting comparison since the Greco-Persian Wars were battles between democracy and totalitarianism also).
This isn’t. This movie isn’t related to the 2006 movie in any way it’s not like a remake or anything, like is any movie about American civil war a sequel to gone with the wind ?
Better movie about some things then latest, every warrior have one helper with reserve spear shield...of course they could use bows arrows, throwing spears, this battle was far more complicated
