I was a photography major in college (well actually Fine Arts/Phtsics). Early on I purchased an RB67. Everyone else of course had 35mm gear. It was like magic. I rocketed ahead. Every shot was thoughtful. I learned to envisage what the print would be that I was going for. My prints were beautiful. I had learned a simplification of the zone system that I could do in my head. It made all the difference in my world.
I ended up as an electrical engineer but just now I am retired and I will be searching for a nice used RB67 (and the hand grip). I cannot wait. Might even set up a darkroom again.

I bought my RB67 with the 127mm in 1972. I stumbled into some way of buying it from an exporter in Japan, new for $490. It came in a box with labels on the outside claiming the box contained automotive parts.

    Interesting take.
My understanding is that the RZ67 can be used as a mechanical camera with RB lenses. They will fire at all shutter speeds without a battery.
In fact two of the three lenses I own are RB lenses precisely in case the electronics break. The only RZ I have is the 110mm.

I have commented before how I bought the rz67 in the 90’s and thought that it would be my main shooter for everything.
After about a year it became the studio queen. The mamiya 645 and Nikon f5 became my everyday shooters.
But in the studio there was nothing better. Mount it in a heavy solid tripod, three lights etc. Not only was it a lot of fun, it was profitable.
The 90’s were the pinnacle of film photography.
I love your arm mount I would have loved that setup.

Have had a RB for 10 years. Started with pre C or C lenses, pro s backs. Now, all that is original is the body and wlf. Pro sd backs, Kl lenses. It is my favorite camera of a dozen followed by the f6 and 645 pro tl. I agree on the fast 50 mm equiv. I rarely use 50 mm in 35 mm full frame. For portraits it is a bit too short, putting me 4' for a head and shoulders. The 127 is wonderful for walk abouts. Not too long but long enough wide open has nice oof background. And for walkabouts listened to folks who said you need to carry it in a back pack. Bull shat. I discovered, with the op tech strap worn cross body, the body takes up some of the weight, lightly supporting it with your R hand or pressing it against the R hip makes it light enough for a 3 hour walk. The quality of the negatives are stunning. After 3 hours with it, the following day I carried a nikon f6 on a black rapid strap and it seemed weightless in comparison. Talk about practicing with a heavy bat! But what this camera brings is a major change from a dslr I have used for 20 years... it's FUN. And before I leave, I have the choice of 35 mm film modern or vintage, 645 with elf or wlf, power winder or not, rb with choice of lenses. And then which film stocks to use. It's like the difference between tennis and golf. In tennis every court is exactly the same. In golf, even if you are playing on the smae course, you never hit from the same spot twice. Way more challenging and more fun than digital.

I will take my RB67 Pro SD system to my grave. I use it for portrait work, studio bases, but mostly hand held. I agree, the macro 140mm makes for a fantastic portrait lens, I also that the 150mm SF with the inserts if i want to get creative.
I also have a Hassie system, but mostly for decoration these days, and for outdoor I use the Bronica ETRSi system.

RB67 PRO SD is king. Very underrated in my opinion. Thanks to the RUclips/Instagram hype with the RZ. The Pro SD is essentially the RZ without the electrical bits. Especially having the option to shoot both K/l or C lenses is awesome. I don’t think it’s widely known that the k/l lenses are equally as good as the RZ “Z” lenses and I’m okay with that 😆. Again thanks to social media hype. Plus you can get a 645 back…awesome. However I wish they had a 6x6 back for the RB. Anyways, great video. It’s refreshing to see someone talk about gear that has had years of experience with all types of gear.

I had a RB67. LOVED the look from photos with it. But it was a titanic. Just too big and heavy for my old body. So I moved to the Mamiya 645super. So glad I did not back out of 120 film as it gives you so much negative to play with. By far the images from this camera for the last year are my favorites... Film has it's own look, so even if I DO have 2 very high quality mirrorless digital camera, I still prefer film shots from the 645. Great video Nico. You rock.

Hi, Nico. Thanks for such a great video. Is there any medium format film system/brand that you would consider reliable enough to still be used nowadays? I mean without taking the hassle of constant visits to the repair service. And another one (sorry), is there any brand that is more easily repairable than the others? I’m talking not so much about repair prices but more about the likelihood of getting it repaired successfully and back on track. Thanks in advance.

  • @paulhanksphoto

I’m sure the RZ can be used mechanically with the older K/L lenses - if the electronics go bad, or the battery is dead you just lose the dark slide warning, AE finder functionality, and ability to use the newer lenses (apart from a fixed speed). Might be other issues I’ve forgotten, but I’m sure it’s basically usable with the older lenses. 👍

I currently have an RB67 Pro SD I use a few times a year. So I like that it doesn't need a battery and the back doesn't have foam gaskets to wear out. Prior to the RB I had a Bronica 6x7, Mamiya RZ67 and a Pentax 67. My favorite all-around and easiest to hand-hold 6x7 was the Bronica. Sadly, it's gotten so hard to find alternate focusing screens, film inserts and other accesories for the Bronica GS-1 now that I don't consider it a viable option any more.

I think the RB is a good choice - my Hasseblad goes in the vehicle with me when I am out and about (but a 35mm if I'm walking around) but the RB67 is a great portrait camera - have had one with a few lenses for quite a while -add a film back for each film I use and its all set. It's a big negative I find better for full length portraits with a little less "waste" image on the sides than the 6x6 - I can fire my modern flash controllers with a sync cord - what more can you want
I avoided the RZ specifically to avoid electronics - too many stories about any old electronics failing eventually - the Nikon F3 is my only film camera with electronics -

  • @andyvan5692

one way of getting close and having 6x7 and being a 'lite' system, try the Mamiya press/universal, you can add a 6x7 magasine onto it, and it is very light, as compared to the RZ67 and RB67 at least; it is a rangefinder, But unlike a linhof, Toyo, or other field camera in the large format genre, this uses barrell focussing like a 35 mm slr lens, so no weight penalty for an 'optical bench' system to mount and focus the lens. ( one other boon for it, is that this IS used for close-up work, in the guise of passport photos, it was used with the 100/127/ 250 lens, can't remember which, but with a 4 shot prism contraption on the front, made 4 images a frame of film).

    Thoughtful as usual. You didn't ask, but I did the math anyway. 6 x 7 is approximately, 4.3 x 5, just wider than 4 x 5. 645 is also close, but a tad narrower than the LF: about 3.75 x 5, enlarging to 10.5 x 14.

The main reason for f2.8 on medium format SLRs is to support a bright viewfinder screen. Head portraits (aka close up portraits) can't really be done with 6x7 at f2.8, because if you focus at the eyes, the tip of the nose and the ears will be out of focus already.
I personally use medium format for everything but portraits, I use large format for portraits (5x7 outside, 11x14 in my home set-up).

If you're looking for a 127 KL on the RB watch out for the rear elements being hazy with backlighting. It happens quite a lot and I took mine out and baked the cemented pair in an oven (yes I know but last resort as every one I looked at buying had the same issue) It melts the cement and let's it set clear. 3-4 times about 180C for about an hour at a time. With cost of energy now it's probably cheaper to buy a new one! Don't move it when you're letting it cool between cooks, make sure the two elements are parallel afterwards.

I am hearing alot of people selling their analogue cameras with electronics. The RB is becoming the popular choice for the Mamiya 67 system. The same problems can be found with the Bronica SQ, ETR and GS-1 cameras. The Bronica S2 and S2A is a mechanical camera, however the S2 is known to have issues with the weaker gears breaking. The S2A has the improved gearing, however they are supposedly complicated to repair and the foam seals go bad causing issues with focusing. I don’t think many techs will work on a Bronica S2 and S2A.
The best choices now for mechanical medium format are Hasselblad 500 series, Mamiya RB67, Rolleiflex and YashicaMat 124(G) etc.
I know of people that have sold off their Nikon F3, F4 and F5 due to the electronics. They are using the Nikon F, F2 and FM instead.
I personally own the Mamiya C220 and C330 and the Bronica SQ. My local camera shop said they can repair the mechanical Mamiya C220 and C330 but not the Bronica SQ due to electronics. He said there are no new boards available and most old boards are prone to failure. I am fortunate that my Bronica SQ is still working, but never know for how long.

Yo me quedo con mi Nikon retroplasticosa y un 50mm. Eso para todo, porque cuanto más equipo tenga, menos pienso en la foto.

I got into film photography 4 years ago with 35mm and started shooting 120 last year. Been lusting over Hasselblad and mamiya cameras for a while now but I am quite afraid of dumping a lot of money into a very old camera system that can break on you any moment. It doesn’t worry me as much yet with 35mm as nikon film bodies are still quite affordable. But the proposition of having a 1500€ plus medium format camera bricking on me is nerve wrecking for someone not having lots of money. Think I will stick to my TLR for 120. As nice as these cameras are they are getting too expensive for me as a hobby photographer to realistically own and use….

selling my rb67 pro sd with 50mm f4.5 (24mm in 35mm) for a really good price if you’re interested:)

The TLR is a great camera for medium format. There are Mamiya C220s and C330s and could probably build a system with a body, a couple of lenses for less than 1,000.00 and they are mechanical and still repairable.

If you own a car, you have a lot more to worry about. It will depreciate as soon as it's off the lot, any repairs are going to cost you as much as your camera kit most likely..... If the camera scratches an itch.... be brave and take the plunge.... you only have one life, enjoy it.

@@extremelydave Old comment but I went full YOLO and bought a nice Mamiya RB67 pro S kit with lenses, prism and Pro SD film backs. Absolutly lovley camera, much prefer it for portraits to the TLR. Still in the honeymoon phase but it's a lovley piece of kit and brings me joy when I use it. A foolish desicion perhaps but I don't regret it :)

ja it is true. Last year i visited my son in Scotland and had problems at customer checked, because of my love names RB 67. Officer wanted to open my in safty bag wraped RB. He react on my nervous reaction. He was to careless unwrapping it, and i couldnt be shout up. My wife said, come down everything will be OK. I told him it is camera, but he did not believe me because it is too big and to wrapped. Ok then it is a bomb a said. Hm, then problem started hahahha. Well, i wanted to sell it but i just couldnt give it away. It is perfect for many reasons. But one thing is for sure; it is not for speed photography and always got to use tripod. It is perfect for art an i use it mostly for BW film photography, which i developed by myself and enlarge on FB paper. The best one hangs on my walls. For colour photography and daily family shooting, i mostly use mobile pohone camera which is good enough to print up to 30x40 or social / computer media.

Thanks for a very nice video. I think your talent deserves a better film like BwXX and a camera that meters better. I have never used a Trip 35 so I don't know how good they meter when they work as they should, but maybe the selenium cell of it is loosing sensitivity. Looking forward to see more photos, both bw and colour.
