My Gore shakedry jacket has saved me on a number of occasions. Small enough to fit in a jersey pocket and keeps you warm and dry when the weather hits.
Racing in the 70s at Crystal Palace, my brother was in the first race, I went to change ready for my race when I realised I’d forgotten my shorts So I had to wait to for his race to finish so I could borrow his,,,,,,, the woollen shorts with real chamois leather insert that had been softened with Olive oil and were now warm and wet......it’s only taken 40 years for me to be able to talk about it. 😐
Great segment as always! One small comment: at 7:50, Manon says that we used toe clips "without cleats." Actually, our shoes that we wore with toe clips DID have cleats. They were just very different. They had a slit in them that fit over the back plate of the pedal.
Manon piloting a very new look in sunglasses - though I'm not sure the look of wearing four pairs at the same time to somehow resemble a fly is going to catch on - brilliant though it was 😁
Manon is a fantastic presenter. Engaging, great pace of delivery. She puts emotion into her delivery like she cares. Thank you !! We wear Lycra in Australia too. I have real chamois pants... with seude side strips. 😋
I always love good bloopers, being a video producer myself, I often forget that everyone screws up every now and then... I'm really into the weatherproof jersey concept, although I am yet to try one put myself :)
Loved it! Small correction: before clipless pedals were toe straps AND cleats. You rode for a bit without them to get your pedals to create a line in the sole of your leather shoe. Then it was off to the cobbler's to get your cleats nailed on using the line from your pedal as a guide. Should gloves have been on the list? Can't get a classic cyclist's tan without them.
YES!!!! The original cycling cleats! In my case Detto Pietros - toe clips and straps and the slotted cleat, back in the day (1982....) . Sean Kelly and track sprinters kept them alive - I still have Sidi slot-cleated shoes and Dura-Ace pedals w/ clips and straps - raced as recently as 2005.
I started semi-serious cycling using toe clips, straps, and slotted cleats. I apparently no longer have those original shoes and cleats. I think I remember tossing them out after they tried to kill me for the fourth or fifth time.
Wool still has a place, I have a 1976 Italian wool jersey. It comes out for specific rides. I can wear it and it alone when the ride goes from 48 to 80 degrees, no need to carry extra and have to put it on and take it off. After a several hundred washing it 1) doesn't stink (take that spandex) and still fits. Oh and the best thing about wool is that it doesn't melt in a crash.
Maybe for men but for women Castelli Jerseys have a bad shape, no space for any breast and too short and usually the material for women is worse than from the same brand for men. Men's production who have no clue about the female body such as Santini, even worse.
I still love wool. I also have an appreciation for the evolution in socks, I never wear cotton anymore since the late 90’s. You have to take care of your feet! Thanks for the video. Stay safe and well.
To me small packable windproof jackets or vests are one of the most important pieces of clothing! They keep you warm on descents and they fit in every back pocket. I never ride without them...
Yes wool was the standard of high cost cycling equipment the "Paco" or short with the interior of alcantare leather padded. And you maybe remember... the fine gloves was made of cangaroo leather and the top knitting, and no matter the slide on the pavement always resist. Ragtimes. Thank you
A funny story: In 1982 a group of us from the small town where I live did an overnight ride to go see the biggest annual race in our part of the world. Up until then, shorts were wool or some synthetic and were reasonably form fitting, but nothing like lycra is. About a third of the riders in the pro race were wearing lycra shorts, and it was the first time any of us had ever seen them. All the women in our group - a VERY fit and trim group of women - universally agreed that they would never be seen in public wearing those shorts. Lycra caught on so fast that, a couple years later I was seeing it on overweight women in the grocery store.
I think this channel is so good that in the future someday (when the coronavirus is over) they should do a “live” show akin to top gear as they are on that level but after watching the bloopers maybe not quite ready for that just yet!! 😂 great job as always though Manon.
@@gcn I second that! You guys brilliantly balance education and fun. And the enthusiasm is contagious, one would fall in love with biking even if by some chance did not love it before!
This is pure gold!!! I remember racing in a leather (AKA hairnet) helmet, wool jersey and a leather chamois ( the shorts were Lycra so maybe I'm not THAT old!!). Skinsuits rock - have been racing - and yes, training - in them since the early nineties (ugh - late 80's?!); the pockets help these days - love the simplicity of a onesie - HA!. Factory Pilots were my first real sunglasses, and Oakley has been my brand ever since. Although Cinelli is mentioned - and mad respect for everything they do - a shout out to Look for making clipless pedals mainstream ( and yes I fell over at the first stop light on the first ride with them - circa 1986). I can't pick a favorite...
You mention goretex but specifically their new shakedry fabric. Really does what it says on the tin. Over time goretex struggles to perform due to being let down by its face fabric. Shakedry does away with this failure. Superb.
Gloves! From winter riding in New York to cold to warm riding in San Francisco now I literally have 5 pairs for each temperature range. Yet you rarely see GCN staff wearing any gloves except in the few cold wet UK riding video segments. Why is that?
I wear gloves for an unexpected spill. Gravel embedded in the skin is no fun. And I prefer to keep my skin intact. You will crash eventually but hopefully you will avoid injury or at least seriously reduced to something minor. Glasses for rocks flung by autos as I quite like my eyes as they are. These two must be high on the list.
Many racing cyclists do not use gloves. They are too hot. Back in the day as an amateur racer, I only used gloves in criteriums, where there was a greater chance that I would be in a crash and slide across the asphalt with the palms of my hands. Generally my hands were tough enough to not need gloves.
I love how you can hear in her voice that she is ‘controlling’ her voice to pronounce her words without her welsh accent making it difficult for some people....I do this when training which is why I can hear it.👍👍👍👍
2:08 there was me thinking that chamois would be made of chamois (European Mountain Goat) leather. Probably because my first cycling shorts very specifically stated that it was made from chamois and not deer leather.
Only thing I would add is merino wool for base layers. In winter they're very wicking so take sweat away, warm, and dry quickly (and without a nasty pong).
My first ever pair of Black Bottoms cycling shorts have a natural leather chamois. That's where the term comes from. I recently tried wearing those 20+ year-old shorts on a ride, and after that I retired them permanently.
I love a bit of modern tech wool as a base layer... I haven't found anything else as a base layer that matches it. And I rode for years without a cycling cap under my helmet; yet now, I can't imagine the idea!
I might have misheard Manon's comment about toe straps. There were cleats on the shoes with a slot that fit over the back rail of the pedal. It held your foot in place when secured by the tightened toe strap.
Nice to hear Gore-Tex getting a mention. I work for the company and can’t speak highly enough of their clothing range for cyclists. Just a shame that it’s largely the most forgotten or overlooked tech in the industry. Long live the Gabba Jacket...
I was looking at my closet and realised that I need newer cycling gear. Now I don't know if I have to sell my car, take a loan, or sell illegal stuff to afford it. And the real bad part? Like 98 % of that cycling gears are made in sweatshops and in countries at a very very low cost...
There's a joke about how jockey cups were introduced into American football in 1870, but helmets didn't make an appearance until 1920, demonstrating which portions of the male anatomy are regarded as more important. 😂
What about hollow core synthetic fibre, usually polyester. I got my best in the 1980s made with Fieldsensor, was cool when hot and had some warmth when cool. Loved it in white with a printed pattern for a jersey.
I have a skinsuit which has a real leather chamois. Anyone care to date it? It is a Caisse D'Epargne team suit. It fits really well, but the cham is not stretchy like a synthetic one. On a modern grooved saddle, it tends to form a "bridge".
Interesting history lesson. Unfortunately, I lived through some of it personally. I rode in wool jerseys, chamois lined shorts, no helmet and shoes with cleats and leather straps. You were considered weak if you wore a rain jacket or gloves. Clothes are better now but there just isn't enough suffering for the sport any more. (That last bit was sarcastic ... well somewhat.) Thing is, you used to have to learn trivial things like how to lace your kangaroo leather shoes. Or wash all your wool jerseys by hand every week so they wouldn't stink or shrink. Now you just buy the right size and you are done.
My favorite lost piece of kit I can't find an equivalent for was a pair of cannondale wind pants that had a wind and water-proof insulated layer over the front of the quads to down below the kneecap while having thin lycra over the back of the leg so heat could escape. What I wouldn't give to have something like that back again.
Absolutely agree ! I have an ancient pair of Endura winter fleece bib tights with the same stuff on the lower leg. They have several holes but are my go to choice. Somebody should start making this type of gear again.

What do you think was the most revolutionary innovation in cycling clothing?

Global Cycling Network the lightweight wind vest gillet. Beats shoving newspapers down your jersey.
Global Cycling Network white cycling shorts
@@kirkvitty4929 hardly revolutionary though. I had the predecessor which was called the paclite and is just as good.

Love how you include your bloopers at the end
A complete natural. Not sure at what yet though 😜
Cheers, Dale! We have a great time putting the bloopers together so we're glad you enjoy them, too!
You can guarantee there was a blooper around the "slippery helmet" line.
yeah, I had a good time watching those clips😆
All praise the humble helmet. Cracked one during a crash last year. According to the doctor who saw my helmet it saved my skull from cracking.
Manon piloting a very new look in sunglasses - though I'm not sure the look of wearing four pairs at the same time to somehow resemble a fly is going to catch on - brilliant though it was 😁
Completely hilarious. I literally had to pause the video to finish laughing!
I'm just here because of Manon @3:50

The socks!! The most essential piece of cloth in nowadays cycling
My favorite bike gear is all wool, if not exactly old fashioned “woolen”.
I love biking in wool socks .
Wool, silk or cotton... hate lycra bad for eczema and other skin conditions, collects body odours, and puts microfibers into our oceans.
