I love Spock's show of mixed "emotions" - amusement, irritation, playfulness, embarrassment. Brilliant scene. Sail on through the stars, Leonard and Nichelle.
This was from 3rd episode (counting the pilot that didn't air until 2 decades later as the 1st). They hadn't decided on what they were doing with his character yet.
I don't think they had a relatonship in this universe, but this interaction is wonderful to watch as it fleshes out the other relationships with the minor characters as opposed to merely focusing on "the trinity." I love how playful she was with him, drawing a rare smile, and how quietly amused he was by it. They obviously had a good friendsip and mutual respect going on there.
@@ndo533 Original Star Trek had a very strong focus on Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. It wasn’t a bad thing, since Kirk as the main character would hear the voice of reason from Spock and the more emotional logic of McCoy. But a lot of fans would have preferred more screen time with the other characters overall, especially the movies.
I rewatched this yesterday. The first time I nearly didn't dare to watch it for I was afraid of Spock's reaction but yesterday I noticed for the first time how Spock actually invites and nearly dares Uhura to go on. Spock is so handsome when he stares at her, his eyes telling: "all right, you can have your song."
The subtext is that they wanted to have him and Uhura become a couple, however the network nixed this on race grounds. But some early episodes are leading to this before it was blocked.
Whenever I think about this scene I see it as proof Spock and Uhura had a bond even love for each other all along the alternate timeline just gave them courage to act on these feelings
AWW, that was so cute! Yeah the 2009 film was totally unexpected being that there was no relationship between Spock and Uhura in the series, but this scene was just wow, and Nichelle has a wonderful voice! Man if they make another Star Trek film I would LOVE to see Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto reenact this scene!

No doubt you like the episode "Plato's Stepchildren" as well." That episode featured the first interracial kiss ever shown on television, between Kirk and Uhura.
I was the annoying black dude in the theater yelling, "Go spock, it's ya birthday, Go spock, get busy, oop oop! Spock likes that BROWN SUGA! Oh yeayuh!" I can see him raising an eyebrow asking Nyota, "Who is...your....male forebearer?" (TRANSLATION: Who's yo daddy?")
Uhura deserved to be given more singing scenes than they filmed. What a fantastic voice! And Grace Lee Whitney (Yeoman Rand, in the big white hair) was a nightclub singer before she was ever on the show. They missed the boat on that...sad sigh...I still want to hear a duet.
What I loved about Spock's dynamic with Uhura and McCoy in TOS, is that he freely joked around with them. The way they bantered showed how comfortable and close they were. I should note that the kiss between Kirk and Uhura was supposed to be between Spock and Uhura, but Shatner whined and complained about it so they changed it. I think the writers might have intended for Spock and Uhura to have a romance, but it never took off as planned.
Yeah, I think the Spock-Uhura relationship was a dropped storyline in TOS and they have great scenes in some episodes. And imo what’s missing in SNW is Spock’s banter with McCoy. People really underestimate the significance of the Spock-McCoy relationship in episodes like The Empath and movies like The Search for Spock.
I honestly found everyone's behavior toward him rather frustrating, I mean the kid grew up with 0 social skills and has ridiculous psychic powers, surely they could afford to spend a little time bringing him up to speed on normal human behavior, about the two way nature of human relationships.
I've noticed that spock has smiled in this episode, The Cage, and This Side Of Paradise. Then when Spock's Mother visit's him from the episode: Journey To Babel, she tells him that he's never learned a smile? lol
The reboot definitely changed their character traits, but the originals with their personalities could never be more than friends and crushes. Spock was much more dedicated to Vulcan Logic that the new Spock, and Uhura was more mature and independent. I get that they wanted a romantic couple though, and they slide almost seamlessly into place with the reboot's characters. Not critical of either timelines, just thoughts.
@bubblez I politely disagree. There was much more of a romantic subplot in the original series with Spock and Nurse Christine Chapel, though it never actually went anywhere. As for racism in the series, the cast pushed pretty hard against it to my knowledge. For example, in the episode Plato's Stepchildren, there was a scene where Kirk and Uhura were going to kiss and writers wanted to do several takes where they kissed and where they didn't and the camera cut away, so they could say they did it but it got cut. The two actors purposely messed up the non-kissing ones so the only ones that could be put in the episode were where they kissed. The main inspiration as far as I'm aware for the Spock and Uhura relationship in the new timeline of movies is because of this scene. Uhura was singing about Spock in a teasing manner and Spock seemed to enjoy it. As far as I can remember, that's it from the OS.
@@Lotus-sp6cu In the original script for that scene, it was supposed to be Spock and Uhura with that interracial kiss. Shatner, however, wanted to be the one to make history.
Woa. I never realized until now Nichelle Nichols is a triple threat. Acting, singing, and DANCING. I am glad that MLK convinced her to stay with the series. She made both universes a better place. Love how she is helping Janice Rand play solitaire with real cards. I wonder if anyone else knows of any pre-warp artifacts/props in daily use in the Star Trek universe aside from when they go back in time.
I think Sisko had a real baseball on his desk on DS9 that was mentioned several times. It is weird how in Trek, the humans are super modern all the time while the Vulcans and Klingons and the like frequently embrace their past (unless Earth's wars destroyed a lot)
@LeoDeGrand That's interesting. And the coloring on the wall is, at leas part of the time, split by his harp. Music is the perfect balance between Spock's two halves. Musical talent comes from the left side of your brain, from which also comes logic and scientific stuff. However, for it to have true meaning, it must be played emotionally. Good call. I think I really like you. :D
I believe this was an early episode, they probably hadn't decided that Spock was supposed to be completely unemotional yet; much like how he raised his voice in The Menagerie/The Cage. Regardless of the reason, it's fun to watch.
I love that lounge! It just gave the feel of a lounge in a real naval ship. I never had that feeling with Ten Forward on SNTG. Voyager did a pretty good job with their lounge. I never really watched Star Trek Enterprise, did they have a lounge?

she did. In the episode Plato's Stepchildren, she confesses to him that when she becomes ftightened, she watches the Captain so busy at his command, and when she hears his voice throughout the ship, she feels much more safer and knows with confidence that he will save his ship, his comand, and most importsntly, his crew.
