    Such incredible acting from Dean Norris in that final confrontation. We get fear, disgust, betrayal, anger, disbelief, disappointment, and heartbreak all within a single facial expression.

      Yep, that look shows a great level of acting that is usually very undervalued and often been unused by directors of stuff he's been in. He is able to portray that feeling, or lack of feeling you get when you are failing to comprehend what is happening so well.

      @@garethlawton5278 Exactly. He actually looks like a distressed, betrayed man. He doesnt over act the anger, or the sadness of the betrayal or whatever. He just looks distressed. But his actions tell you what is going trough his mind. A thousand conflicting thoughts per second that clearly have him over the edge, unable to come up with a solution and refusing to be convinced of anything. Amazing actor.

    It's a poem from a famous old poet.
    Here's the lines from it:
    3:40 I met a traveller from an antique land,
    3:43 Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
    3:47 Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
    3:50 Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
    3:55 And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
    3:58 Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
    4:01 Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
    4:08 The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
    4:12 And on the pedestal, these words appear:
    4:16 My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
    4:21 Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
    4:28 Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
    4:32 Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
    4:36 The lone and level sands stretch far away.
    It's a poem about Rameses The Second, an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, also known by his Greek name, Ozymandius. The poem describes the Pharaoh's massive accomplishments, and his huge empire-- but since the Pharaoh was alive thousands of years ago, his empire collapsed long ago, and all of his accomplishments have been forgotten, even though he was a 4:19 "King of Kings"

    When Walter is talking to Hank in his garage at the beggining and they are both pretending not to know, he is in a similar situation to the one Gus was in that scene in season 4 when Hank is interrogating Gus. Gus handled it perfectly. Even though you can tell that for a second he was caught off guard by Hank, he still managed to pretend well enough to fool the DEA. In the scene in the garage, Walter was aware that Hank knew, and he also was aware that Hank probably didn't have any real evidence, just suspicion. He could have kept pretending and Hank wouldn't have anything (like Gus did by keeping the tracker device in his car only when we went to the restaurant), specially since Walter was already out of the meth business. And you can tell that Walter considered doing it for a second before turning around (24:53). But he was so arrogant that he preferred (and had the balls) to confront Hank directly, as if he was offended because Hank had done something to offend him (25:04). I really like that contrast between Walter and Gus, because it shows the difference between them, and it also shows how Walter's arrogance is causing his own ruin (like when he left a book that a meth cook he and Jesse killed gave him lying around in his bathroom, instead of hiding it or throwing it out because he was so confident he wouldn't get caught) .
    55:49 I can't wait to see your reaction to the next few episodes haha

    • @Jeremy-jm3fe
      @Jeremy-jm3fe 3 года назад

      That is not correct. Walt kept Gale's book because he had respect for him, not because it was some sort of trophy. There was a scene in season 4 where Walt looks at Gale's coffee machine and smiles, but then he frowns when he remembers what he had to do. Then there's a scene later where Walt is reading Leaves of Grass. And finally, a scene in season 5 where Walt picks up the book and smiles at it proudly.
      You would think that Hank would find out about Walt by him getting cocky and inadvertently leading him to find out, but Hank found out simply because Walt accidentally left the book in the bathroom.

    • @Jeremy-jm3fe
      @Jeremy-jm3fe 3 года назад

      Also, Gus was interrogated by like 4 DEA Agents inside of a federal building crawling with cops. Not only that, but his testimony was recorded as evidence. It would make no sense for Gus to threaten Hank and everyone else while being recorded.
      If Gus was confronted by Hank in the middle of nowhere, especially towards the ending of season 4, I'm sure that Gus would've killed him.

    • @belachaney

      You can't compare those two scenes for several reasons. Hank and Walt being family but also having a private 1 on 1 convo. It was a different scenario and Hank didn't learn his lesson, immediately gets violent. Hanks kind of a scumbag and cares more about catching his guy than his family

      @@matthewfortuna3443 It was not a "flex". The irony of Hank finding out is that Walt is egotistical and prideful for most of the series, but keeping the book was a sign of respect for his fellow chemist.

    Walt saying to Jesse "I need you to believe this" about Mike's death is not about Walt. The only reason he wants Jesse to believe it is to make Jesse feel happier. And well, to not blow up so that he would have to take care of him... but I think the word "Son" he just used for Jesse is there to show that he truly feels like Jesse is his son, and that all the problems of the business are now behind them and now he still considers Jesse as his son who he wants to be happy.
    Because Walt was so horrible and portrayed as horrible in season 5 thus far, we are inclined to think him just as selfish monster. Sure he is that, but he truly loved his family and Jesse, then his ego took the best of him, but now he achieved everything he wanted and thus he killed his ego in a way. So Walt is now close to what he was in the beginning in season 1. Though not a loser anymore, but a successful car wash business owner.

    The poem basically about how nothing lasts and everything and everyone will eventually be gone, ground up into nothing by the sands of time.
    In it Ozymandias originally states that his Empire is the greatest the word has ever seen and challenges all who consider themselves mighty rulers to look at his works, his great kingdom, and despair for they dare not hope to even come close to his achievements. But now it's all gone, his monument is ruined and nothing beside it remains and his statement becomes ironic: I am the King of Kings and all that is left of my achievements is a broken statue in the desert.

    I think now that Hank's offer to Walt "Bring the kids to the house and we'll talk" might have been a legit chance for Walt to get mercy. But he's doing the same thing Skyler did back in Season 3 when she passed on her chance to sicc her lawyer on Walt or call the cops. But she wanted to keep the family reputation and possibly the money, and she gambled on the cancer making the whole problem to go away. And that's why Walt refuses to come clean to Hank. I think if he did it, and came clean to the whole family, Hank would have been amenable to dealing with it as a family problem, to keeping it within the family, and maybe sweep it under the rug, since Walt is dying and he's well out of the business (though that's unlikely), or else do all he can to get a plea deal for Walt, to get him maybe house arrest and a suspended sentence in exchange for his knowledge of Todd's uncle's gang and Declan's outfit and Lydia. But Walt still wants to win.

    • @hemlock399
      @hemlock399 4 месяца назад

      Nah, Hank is very vengeful at this point. He really, *really* wants to *destroy" Walt in the way he best knows how - have him publicly shamed, tried and thrown in (or "under") the prison.

    • @Gunleaver
      @Gunleaver 4 месяца назад

      @@hemlock399 That's what he WANTS, but unlike Walt, Hank is better at accepting realities he can't control. That's kind of what his DEA arc is about, finding his own form of control after his traumatic experience in El Paso destroys his illusion of power. He learns to operate within the framework of the job while also pursuing the courses of action he kniws to be right. And in the framework of the job, he knows Walt's arrest is the end of his DEA career, just like the exposure of Fring was for his boss. So if he can find a way to get more good out of it, he might let Walt cop to a deal.
      Walt going to prison for a couple of years before dying is not much of a punishment for him, hell, that's the whole reason why his cancer diagnosis set all this in motion - it was NOT the need to provide for his family, it was the immunity to material punishment that comes with a short life expectancy. But his public exposure & conviction will be devastating to the rest of his (and Hank's) family, and will last far longer than however Walt will last in prison. There is even the possibility that when Walt's cancer takes its fatal turn, he might be released to home monitoring, to die off the taxpayer dime.
      And as I said, Walt turns this offer down, because for him, that's not winning, that's getting caught, getting neutered & rendered impotent. For Walt everything has always been about power, control & agency. He felt emasculated and dead when the series started, and by liberating him from societal control, his cancer-inspired criminal career was a form of empowerment. If he has to bow to the law, to turn in Todd & Jack's crew, and Lydia and her network, to wear an ankle bracelet and submit to inspections by the DOC, even if he gets to stay out of prison & keep some of his money, or just the house and the car wash for his family, that's losing. He'd be Henry Hill at the end of "Goodfellas", a schmuck, a nobody, the very thing his life of crime raised him above in his eyes. And I think Hank knows Walt, and shares his pride, enough to get that. The fact that Hank won and Walt got caught would hang over every family dinner, every ostensibly friendly chat, for the rest of their lives. It's just as big a win for Hank as sending him to the federal penitentiary.

    I met a traveller from an antique land,
    Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
    Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
    Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
    And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
    Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
    Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
    The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
    And on the pedestal, these words appear:
    My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
    Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
    Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
    Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
    The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
    This poem is about time and the fact that even the greatest of men are nothing compared to it.
    There was a great conflict in the animated Justice League between Amazo, an immortal, all-powerful android, and Lex Luthor, Batman and Superman's corporate juggernaut enemy, which kind of encapsulates the struggle of the poem.
    Amazo demands to know why Lex continues to pursue power, why he does anything, and Lex admits that it's all a game he knows he can't win because eventually he will be forgotten like everyone else. Amazo demands to know why he shouldnt just destroy everything if thats the case to which Lex replies that if does that, then he will not be able to see where it leads. Lex says he wants to witness as much as possible, so he keeps going, and this gives Amazo the motivation to stand down and try to figure out his own purpose.

    6:51+ Try to think beyond usual judgments to see what Walt represents - it's not about downfall or karma, it's about him living his life on his own terms, awakening & feeling the power, being a wolf instead of a sheep. Not long ago he was an underpaid teacher, polishing cars of spoiled brats for his second income - that's not freedom, even if others think it is. Then he made the decision to change everything, and instead of dying he started living for the first time.

    I do not know if you truly understood the gravity of what Walt said in the end of the episode, as you are not English native speakers. To make it clear, he said to Hank that no matter what he does, he should be aware of Heisenberg. This scene started with Hank on the upper hand till Walter told him that getting the kids to Hank's place was not gonna happen. That's when Heisenberg took over the argument. That's why Hank said he didn't know who he was talking to. Walt would never threaten him or deny him. The only other time was when Walt Jr got drunk and vomited in the pool.

Everthing that has been done has been done by Walter White who used Heisenberg as an alias. He showed different sides of his personality to different people at different times, but pretty much every human being alive does that to varying degrees and is not the same thing as having actual separate personalities.
