Sam's speech is so good I actually decided to use it for a monologue project in my high school drama class. Even if it was just for a grade, it still felt like such an honor being able to recreate it. That's how special this speech is.
That Farimir backstory scene with his brother showing how borimir was more of a father figure and caring then Denothor kind of makes this whole extended edition for me.
If they had only kept that scene in the theatrical cut, I would've said they were all 10/10, no notes. But leaving it out makes it seem like Boromir started out corrupt, instead of showing how quickly the ring ensnared an honorable man.
100 percent aggree. It also sets us up for the whole I wish you had died instead of borrimir here go into a suicidal charge to death and then I’ll burn you alive from Denothor in the next film. Also like how not just in name, but in their character arcs Denothor adn Theoden are reversals of each other. Both ruling characters who go insaine one snapped out of maddness due ot death of a son while the other plunges into maddness
ya, i can recall my first time watching these movies in the theaters when i was 13... I couldnt trust Boromir but watching the extended in the Two Towers made that whole dynamic of a relationship work better. I always knew i should "feel" for Boromirs death and Faramirs sacrifice, granted it was sad but it connected better with that specific cut. One of the main Extended cuts that I can point out (ive seen the extended so many times that i forget what was added). This scene is the one i always go "God they NEEDED that clip if any for the theatrical".
I think fellowship also has some great scenes with borimir that hammers this point home as well. The scene in the mountains when he says the hobbits will die in these weather while being a tad let’s go through Rohan to Gondor, I think he did care since before that is the fun sword fighting scene with merry and pippin, the scene in lots Lorien with him is also great extended that should be in the movie because he really gets into why he came and how his father’s expectations are depending on him and mentioning his brother for the first time and telling aragorn how htey’ll ride together fixing the whole Gondor don’t need a king rudeness at the beginning.
I just find it odd that Smeagol had never heard potatoes referred to in that way. They're both from similar culture but maybe the generational gap is pretty bad
Gandalf and the Balrog falling through and illuminating the abyss is one of my favorite movie beginnings of all time. Seeing it huge and beautiful on the theater screen was an experience to be had.
So the Trio, if not mentioned. Aragorn broken 2 toes, Legolas had a cracked rib from falling off a horse, and Gimli had a dislocated knee, yet did the running scene. Imagine how much pain they were most likely in, yet were still so dedicated to do that scene.
That’s part of what makes doing real stunts awesome. Because you know that a real human being is doing that.. it gives you respect for it and makes you hopeful to see real humans doing larger than life stunts. It gives you hope knowing that not all human beings aren’t sedentary and fragile. When we get to the point of doing no stunts I’ll be extremely sad.. cgi just isn’t the same. The set for the nostromo is freakin awesome. I do not think it looks bad at all. A real mountain is generally cooler than a cg mountain.. it’s just sad bro.. we can’t be bothered or uncomfortable for a bit for anything now..
The emotion Erik gave describing Sam’s speech was powerful, like watching that scene in the theater in 02’. Great job sir and an amazing breakdown. Crazy I’m still learning about my favorite movie over 20 years later
The Two Towers is my favorite of the trilogy, but it has much to do with where I was in life when it released. I was escaping to the theater, and watching this movie gave me immense comfort. I went and saw it 4 or 5 times. Such was the impact on me, that I could rewatch that opening 10 minutes on loop forever and be content.
Such an iconic musical rendition. One of my favorite emotional highlights during rewatches… 👏 they speed up the rift in Return of the King, but Two Towers contains the true classic 🙌

I love how for the battle of helm’s deep, the calm before the storm is literally a storm. It really sets up how impactful it’s going to be. There’s the calm before the storm, and the storm before the battle of helm’s deep. It’s easily the best battle of the entire series. Pelennor fields might have had a bigger scale, but at its core it’s a battle of oneupmanship. Imposing fortress, giant army, giant cavalry on the flank, giant elephants that might as well be moving fortresses to flank them, unkillable ghost army. Helm’s deep is just holding the line no matter the cost and praying you live to see the dawn

I remember reading somewhere that Bernard Hill, Theodan' actor, had actually lost his son in real life. So that scene of Theodan saying "no parent should have to bury their child," and crying, was actually Bernard Hill breaking character and mourning his son IRL. It's such a raw and heartbreaking scene, it makes sense that Bernard Hill would draw on real life emotion to drive the scene forward. Such a legend.
Without wanting to "um, actually..." a fellow canuck, given the nature of the subject matter, it seems only right to correct the story I believe you were referencing: In the cast audio commentary, Bernard Hill describes an encounter he had, shortly before filming that scene, with a woman whose child had died. It was _her_ anguish that he was channeling in his performance - which, incidentally, he was unsure of on the day, and only accepted that Jackson's directions were correct once he saw the completed edit of the full scene. Otherwise, you're right, the man was a legend.

I am a writer, and in 21 years I have only released one book, working through bouts of depression and the executive dysfunction of good ol ADHD, after years of being "lucky" enough to hear 'we've passed' from literary agents and publishers, I finally decided to self-publish in 2019 It is a vast understatement to say that I've had doubts about attempting to continue to pursue a career in writing and authorship. But when I tell you here and now how much seeing you care about these things steeles my resolve to keep going, know that I mean it from the bottom of my heart. We do need stories, absolutely. Typo there: the original text reads "stars wheeled over." All Jackson added was "-head" to make Tolkien's language a little more plain for the modern ear.
The emotions during the sam`s scene from you were really inspiring, I love it when people stop pretending and the emotion flows forth, like a river crashing against the false walls of the lies we keep telling ourselves, the emotions reveal the truth of how we really feel, not for upvotes or for subs or even for effect, they show the true nature of what things really mean to us, in a digital world that values the illusion more than the truth, seeing someone break-down gives me real hope, and It was a really great moment that I myself felt the emotions, thank you for sharing this and not editing it out or trying to frame it as something other than what it truly was..
I was always a bit confused by Arwen's arc. They say she is giving up immortality for a mortal life several times, but then there is the part about her lingering after all others die around her. I also found the reassurance of having a son to be cold comfort, as he will also grow old and die along with everyone down through the ages. Except, again, they say she is choosing a mortal life. They even say Arwen is dying at one point.
This was absolutely beautiful, Vosser! The Two Towers is my favorite of the trilogy. And you gave it the time and unpacking that it truly deserves. You sir Vosser, you've shown your quality, sir. I fight pain of full body CRPS and hope is so very important to my fight against constant agony of nerve pain. ❤
I've watched this trilogy every year for the last 7 years and it's always what I want to watch when I feel sad or tired. I love that you're diving into them and bringing up all the great details, like Sam's speech. And I love that they put the battle of the Ents on screen because is freaking epic LOL

Tolkien, bar none, is of the absolute pinnacle of writing. Bearing down the scope of his world, the depth of his world building, his silver lined dialogue is akin to a Shakespeare classic. Peter Jackson had acclimated Tolkien's writing to the big screen in such phenomenal fashion. Factoring the dialogue of Tolkien accompanied by the wide array of talented actors/actresses, these films are unequivocally astonishing. I was patiently waiting for this video to drop, the proportionate, comprehensive work necessary in a video this massive is nutty. Major respect for this one, Eric Voss 👏 🙌

The Return of the king segment cannot come soon enough. I got to admit I was chuckling a bit by the initial horse boy reference but you got me, and really set in the feeling and pride that the story brought. I grew up on the illustrations of Howe and Lee, so it was brilliant to have them designing for these movies. It was absolutely key in making this representation feel true to me.

When I realized how much deeper Frodo bringing Gollum along was more than just him needing a guide. And him wanting to see if someone the ring has corrupted can come back. And in the end. He saw he neither one could come back.
I've loved these movies for years, but the most memorable experiences for me were watching them in the Royal Albert Hall in London with a full orchestra playing the score. Simply soul-blowing. One thing I loved was seeing the way that clanging 5/4 beat was done for the Uruk Hai: there was a woman with an open piano, wearing big gloves and smashing metal chains into the strings. One of the most METAL things I've ever seen in an orchestral performance. Got to meet Howard Shore after one of the screenings too.
I will always sob at Sam’s speech. There have been times in my life where the only thing I was looking forward to in life were new movie releases. Stories have that power to give you the will to live when all hope is lost.
I appreciate you explaining why the choice was made to change Faramir's character in the movie. When I first saw it, I felt like it was a betrayal of his character. He was always different from his brother and clearly never had a desire for personal power, always more interested in peace than glory, and a very sensitive person. This kinder quality of character is what always made him hated by his father, but what his father couldn't see is that it made him stronger than his brother and was why he refused the ring in the first place. His journey in the books was to find the love and happiness that he lacked until he healed and fell in love with Eowyn, but hearing you explain Jackson's intentions makes me understand it better. They cut out all of the love plot for him, and they needed him to have an arc that had him grow as a human with natural flaws.
I really appreciate the amount of time it took to create this analysis video! So thoughtful and heartfelt. I really like what yall said about Sam being the ringbearer for the ringbearer. When all is said and done about this story, genuine & true companions won over an world shattering evil. We all need each other to survive, you can't do it alone!

What I love about Gimli’s “YESS” after theoden talks about the horn of helm hammerhand is that for Gimli, he very recently saw what the orcs did to his kin. They trapped his kin in, and his kin were terrified and all they could do was wait to die. Whereas in this scenario, he’s happy that if this is another defeat, let them not go quietly into the night. The “YESS” really feels like he is relieved not to have to experience the same fear his kin must have felt in their last moments

Two things. First, my word this is an exceptional breakdown. Second, to call this movie the weaker of the trillogy just proves how unbelievably great these are. I will never forget seeing this at the cinema, even my most favourite movies have never made me eant to turn around and walk back in to watch it like this did. A masterpiece amongst masterpieces!!
I am probably in a minority, but Two Towers is my favorite of the trilogy, and I think I know why. It was the only one of the three I saw in the theatre. My dad told my sister and I if we kept grades up, soon as school let out for Christmas break, we'd go see this. It was a packed Friday afternoon, I was 11 years old and could not sit still! I absolutely love this movie. From the sets, the locations, the battles, I love this movie and it's probably my #2 favorite film of all time! CANNOT wait for the Return of the King breakdown.

The music, the delivery, the amazing way to wrap up events for a satisfying film conclusion…just amazing.

The emotions during the sam`s scene from you were really inspiring, I love it when people stop pretending and the emotion flows forth, like a river crashing against the false walls of the lies we keep telling ourselves, the emotions reveal the truth of how we really feel, not for upvotes or for subs or even for effect, they show the true nature of what things really mean to us, in a digital world that values the illusion more than the truth, seeing someone break-down gives me real hope, and It was a really great moment that I myself felt the emotions, thank you for sharing this and not editing it out or trying to frame it as something other than what it truly was..
I was always a bit confused by Arwen's arc. They say she is giving up immortality for a mortal life several times, but then there is the part about her lingering after all others die around her.
I also found the reassurance of having a son to be cold comfort, as he will also grow old and die along with everyone down through the ages.
Except, again, they say she is choosing a mortal life. They even say Arwen is dying at one point.
This was absolutely beautiful, Vosser! The Two Towers is my favorite of the trilogy. And you gave it the time and unpacking that it truly deserves. You sir Vosser, you've shown your quality, sir. I fight pain of full body CRPS and hope is so very important to my fight against constant agony of nerve pain. ❤

I've watched this trilogy every year for the last 7 years and it's always what I want to watch when I feel sad or tired. I love that you're diving into them and bringing up all the great details, like Sam's speech.
And I love that they put the battle of the Ents on screen because is freaking epic LOL

Tolkien, bar none, is of the absolute pinnacle of writing. Bearing down the scope of his world, the depth of his world building, his silver lined dialogue is akin to a Shakespeare classic.
Peter Jackson had acclimated Tolkien's writing to the big screen in such phenomenal fashion. Factoring the dialogue of Tolkien accompanied by the wide array of talented actors/actresses, these films are unequivocally astonishing.
I was patiently waiting for this video to drop, the proportionate, comprehensive work necessary in a video this massive is nutty. Major respect for this one, Eric Voss 👏 🙌

I got to admit I was chuckling a bit by the initial horse boy reference but you got me, and really set in the feeling and pride that the story brought. I grew up on the illustrations of Howe and Lee, so it was brilliant to have them designing for these movies. It was absolutely key in making this representation feel true to me.

When I realized how much deeper Frodo bringing Gollum along was more than just him needing a guide. And him wanting to see if someone the ring has corrupted can come back. And in the end. He saw he neither one could come back.
I've loved these movies for years, but the most memorable experiences for me were watching them in the Royal Albert Hall in London with a full orchestra playing the score. Simply soul-blowing. One thing I loved was seeing the way that clanging 5/4 beat was done for the Uruk Hai: there was a woman with an open piano, wearing big gloves and smashing metal chains into the strings. One of the most METAL things I've ever seen in an orchestral performance. Got to meet Howard Shore after one of the screenings too.
This trilogy is so important to me , I always cry when I rewatch it 4 times a year

I appreciate you explaining why the choice was made to change Faramir's character in the movie. When I first saw it, I felt like it was a betrayal of his character. He was always different from his brother and clearly never had a desire for personal power, always more interested in peace than glory, and a very sensitive person. This kinder quality of character is what always made him hated by his father, but what his father couldn't see is that it made him stronger than his brother and was why he refused the ring in the first place.
His journey in the books was to find the love and happiness that he lacked until he healed and fell in love with Eowyn, but hearing you explain Jackson's intentions makes me understand it better. They cut out all of the love plot for him, and they needed him to have an arc that had him grow as a human with natural flaws.

What I love about Gimli’s “YESS” after theoden talks about the horn of helm hammerhand is that for Gimli, he very recently saw what the orcs did to his kin. They trapped his kin in, and his kin were terrified and all they could do was wait to die. Whereas in this scenario, he’s happy that if this is another defeat, let them not go quietly into the night. The “YESS” really feels like he is relieved not to have to experience the same fear his kin must have felt in their last moments

Two things. First, my word this is an exceptional breakdown. Second, to call this movie the weaker of the trillogy just proves how unbelievably great these are. I will never forget seeing this at the cinema, even my most favourite movies have never made me eant to turn around and walk back in to watch it like this did. A masterpiece amongst masterpieces!!
I am probably in a minority, but Two Towers is my favorite of the trilogy, and I think I know why. It was the only one of the three I saw in the theatre. My dad told my sister and I if we kept grades up, soon as school let out for Christmas break, we'd go see this. It was a packed Friday afternoon, I was 11 years old and could not sit still! I absolutely love this movie. From the sets, the locations, the battles, I love this movie and it's probably my #2 favorite film of all time! CANNOT wait for the Return of the King breakdown.
