It costs way more to execute someone in large part because of the large number of legal barriers in place to try and prevent unjust executions (something which still occurs anyway). You remove those barriers to make executions cheaper than life sentences and the number of innocent people who get killed will go up. Capital Punishment simply is not a deterrent, because if it was, the sorts of crime that Capital Punishment are a 'punishment' for would go down... and they just don't. Nowhere in the world has the utilisation of CP led to a commensurate drop in those types of crimes. It simply doesn't work. That alone should be a good enough reason not to do it; others include it's horrendous expense and the fact that you can execute the wrong person. All Patel does, every time she speaks, is demonstrate what a lightweight thinker she actually is.

Priti Patel - of all the awful politicians in the present government - thick, ideologically-driven, careerist, inept - is possibly the worst. I've seen many poor quality politicians come and go in my adult life and can't think of one more abysmal in so many categories.

I believe some people get in to politics because they want to make things better for people, some get corrupted along the way and some die fighting to make things better for people, where others get into politics purely to get rich. At no point have I ever seen anything from Priti Patel that suggests she has anything other than contempt for normal people in the UK. One of the most horrific human beings in modern politics.
There are some notable and quite detestable people in the current Tory government. She has certainly earned the right to be there.
