This is all a result of a lack of regulation. Manufacturers discontinue a model and cease producing replacement parts after at most 2 years. When a part does go out while it's still being made that costs them $5 to make they're allowed to charge $500 for it to push you to just buy new instead. You want to be in the washer/dryer business? Fine, you should be required to manufacture replacement parts for for at least 15 years and supply them at reasonable prices. A capitalist will come in and say that consumers should just vote with their dollar, but that doesn't work when every appliance store you walk into only sells junk. There's a reason why almost no one carries Speed Queen...it lasts too long!
@@darrinrentruc6614 The newer mass market low efficiency agitator top loaders are just as computer controlled, failure prone, and short lived. Try again. Manufacturers will never do right by consumers until legislation forces them to.
@@jblyon2 Unfortunately, that is not the case, and I do not think you have the proper perspective. It is too expensive to produce appliances in America because of regulations, minimum wage, unions, and other welfare programs (i.e. FICA). All of these parts are manufactured and assembled outside of America now because of the cost and difficulty operating in America. There are Department of Energy (DOE) regulations that require or highly entice the manufactures to produce energy efficient models. Because of this, the technology always has to change to keep meeting the DOE standards and thus also making replacement parts extremely expensive. Energy efficiency is the metric appliance manufactures are chasing rather than customer satisfaction because of the perversion the regulations have had on the market.
@@jjenn050 If the technology constantly has to change, why are the core parts (e.g. pump) of my $350 non-energy star Whirlpool dishwasher shared with hundreds of other dishwasher models, including the highest efficiency ones from over a half dozen brands? Even if it does change model to model there is no excuse for not making replacement parts available, it's only done to force you to buy new instead of repair. The quality of the parts also has nothing to do with their origin. China can manufacture some incredibly high quality products, but they'll also make complete junk that violates regulations without batting an eye (see Lumber Liquidators flooring). If the company was willing to pay for quality they would get quality. They are not willing to pay for quality and the parts would still be low-grade junk if they were made in the US. The ONLY thing that can fix this situation is regulation forcing the manufacturers to sell higher quality appliances and keep replacement parts available.
Ugh, thousands of dollars later I have found that I like old style washers that have nothing digital. Just a machine that washes with hot water is all I need. No _he_ for me.
I paid more for my speed queen washer and dryer than what they were trying to sell me at Best Buy, but it's well worth the investment. Never needed all those fancy bells and whistles. Just something that does the job reliably and efficiently.
Harrison William, the reason it doesnt have a light is because the light is extra. that extra light might cost you a thousand bucks. i was looking for a new frig and with the ability to get water and ice without opening the door that feature was 1800.00.
I got a super expensive computerized washer dryer for my brother and his wife. It lasted 8 years and failed three times, for high cost. Yes, it does save 20-30 liters per wash cycle.. and still cleans great.. but considering the extra 500 dollars.. plus the constant failures.. not worth it. And it was a waste of resources.
I had a basic sears washer from 70's, it did it all, could do 1 pair of jeans all the way to all your bedding. Simple, lasted 30 years before drum rusted out. Much better than what you buy today. Should have rebuilt it. New appliances don't last.
I will spend 20 hours of labor and endless time troubleshooting and tracking down parts to keep anything old in service. Anything with a computer part will never win as a replacement for longevity
When our new washer broke years ago we called the repair man because it was the Circuit board that broke, he wanted $1300 for a new one which was absolutely ridiculous. I went to our local 2nd hand dealer and bought an old school washer and dryer for $400 and haven’t had 1 issue in years. Knock on wood. Congratulations on your new home, beautiful.
My husband had the audacity to bring home this piece of s*** Impeller washer surprising me like he thought I would be happy. I was so angry with him. My mommy taught me many years ago how to wash clothes and said that when you have an agitator, that is the best clean you can get. The arguments for oh my clothes are getting ruined? I baby my clothes. I often hang up most of my clothes to Air dry. And if I do dry them in the dryer it's on low. I am so sick and tired of subpar technology.
I purchased a brand new washer and dryer about 3 years ago, my first brand new set ever! Within 1 month I called my used appliance store friend, and said I will give you mine, if you will give me a normal set. No washer was going to tell me if I could open the lid or not, or tell me I could only soak cloths for a certain time. Like I once told a Lowes clerk, when she asked me if there was something wrong with the light fixture I purchased, and why I was returning it, I replied with "Its a smart light and I want a stupid light"
What do you recommend for a dishwasher. I’ve had the worst luck with dishwasher lately with all of their sensors and digital systems that seem to stop working, and they seem to take forever to run a cycle. And I’ll be honest I miss a dishwasher with a chopper in it, I know it’s not trendy but I miss it. Any brands like that, that you recommend and are still around?
Your story about the washer and dryer is similar to my microwave story. My parents gave my husband and me a microwave as an engagement gift in December of 1982. It was a new Sears Kenmore (back when that meant something). It had a dial timer, 3 button cook control (High, Medium and Defrost) and a temperature probe (you stick the probe into whatever you are cooking, set the temp probe dial to the temp you want and turn it on. It will cut off when the temp setting is reached). It is HUGE - like 2-3 times the size of a standard microwave. The interior is also very large - it can cook a turkey. AND it still WORKS 37 years later. No digital clock, no digital timer, no automatic settings. Not terribly high powered, but reliable as anything. And we don't have to worry about resetting it if the power goes out. Oh, and our apt. has small versions of the washer and dryer similar to your new set. Knobs and dials, no computer/digital stuff. I like it simple as well.
When I first married my wife, I bought her a new washer and dryer, the first ever washer and dryer she had which was new, not used. She had tears in her eyes and said, "Nothing says love like a new washer and dryer." :-)
@@michaelchilders2012 Wish I could talk to someone in NC when my Samsung washer screws up. I have to talk to some guy I can't understand, and whose feelings I don't want to hurt by telling him what I really think of his product design.
I’m an appliance technician and you can no longer get the Speed Queen with the push and turn timer. You can still get the option for a full tub of water, but they have gone with the digital dial interface. The model you want to get that is laundromat industrial grade is TC5003WN. It’s called the “Classic” model. They are identical to the old style other than the digital timer. Do not buy any other model since they are modular designed. (Just like all the other bottom feeder machines)
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Speed Queen. We own and operate a small dairy farm, we have lots of dirty clothes. I had the other washers, but Speed Queen is the best!!! They are easy to maintain and repair.
I had a similar experience with a high efficiency washing machine that broke down with a computer failure three-years after purchasing it. Even before its complete failure, it never worked well. After that experience, I learned that Speed Queen was the best kept secret in the washer/dryer business.
I was just talking about the old school washing machines with a friend from high school yesterday! I have an older GE. He mentioned the Speed Queens. Great minds thinking alike. Thanks. With your large following, maybe we are turning the corner. Bravo!
My dad put me through college, repairing laundry in kitchen appliances. It broke our heart when Kenmore went computer. Dad could take three washing machines left on the curb. And make one or two working one's out of them. I wish I had a 70s Kenmore laundry pair right now. I might look into the Speed Queen.
Speed Queen is the least expensive on the market, they will last 10 fold over big box store brands that fail to soon and only a fraction of them will end up as landfill. Oh yea.....and they can be repaired!
I'm loving my 1 year old SQ w&d, after having to retire my 50 year old Maytag. We replaced the timer over the years but even reconditioned ones were no longer available...
@@jazpanoz4996 I’m sure they are as far as initial purchase price goes, but that whirlpool will be scrap iron in 5-10 years or less and the speed queen will still be getting the job done in 30.
matthew peters @ Point was, speed queen wasn't,isn't the cheapest:/ Also my top loader whirlpools from 80's & 90's still running smooth as a dime, all mechanical xD
@@jazpanoz4996 my point was that whirlpool isn’t cheaper if it only last 30% as long as a speed queen set. I don’t doubt that your old whirlpool is a great unit. I have a 90’s model Kenmore stacked set (gas drier), just keeps on chugging along. My parents had the same set of Maytag since ‘82 and they were used when they got them. They were still going in ‘12 but parts were impossible to get, so they bought a new set of the speed queens. Those Maytag’s made it through 30 years and 6 kids, farmer/mechanic clothes, plus my little family when I first started out. I’m not some speed queen fascist or anything, they’re just the only one making a good heavy duty serviceable set anymore. Everything else is made to throw away every few years. And they don’t cost that much really. I’m sure wranglerstars set that he replaced, cost more than this new set. Yes, you can buy cheaper, but they aren’t cheaper if they don’t last.
LOVE my Speed Queen washer & dryer!!! Did a lot of research & read MANY reviews on the "other" machines before buying Speed Queen! 10 years & still working great!!!!
I left the front loader world about 5 years ago after going through 3 front loaders in an 8 years span by purchasing a new Speed Queen top loader pair. My jeans came out clean after 1 wash for the first time since the first front loader entered my home. I love my Speed Queen pair so much I bought a second pair for my garage. No frills, clean clothes. Worth every Penny.
I'm with Mrs. W on having old fashioned knobs. I remember walking though a big box hardware store and feeling pretty dumb that I couldn't figure out to get the washer started... and I'm only in my late thirties. =) We've had an old Kenmore electric dryer that we bought used and it was no issue to replace the heating element and thermostat when they went out. $80 self repair instead of $300 for a service call on a $150 dryer.
We still use gas dryer that came with the house. Maybe it's 30 yrs old. A few basic repairs and it still works great. Really important to clean it thoroughly. I take it outside remove back plate and blow it out. Lots of lint falls below screen.
Great video. I, too, ended up with one of the new HE washers because it has a sanitize feature that I wanted. But it doesn't get clothes as clean as it should. When the dryer broke, I bought a basic model Maytag and it works great. My 92 year old mother has the same Speed Queen for the last 20+ years and swears by it. This video conforms what I will be buying when the time comes. Thanks.
A couple years ago I walked into a Best Buy to buy a washer and dryer. There was a man there who was telling me he had just bought a high efficiency washer a little while ago and he HATED IT. I bought a simple top-loading washing machine. The local repairman who fixes washers, dryers, dishwashers told me NEVER to buy a high efficiency washer. He said the simple top-loading washing machines were the best.
Yes, gas is way more efficient; it is about half as expensive to use as electricity. We have had ours for over 30 years only and other than having to replace the belt a few times, I've only had to replace a relay coil and the glow igniter once. Instead of a pilot light, it uses a spiral heating element that gets cherry red just before allowing the gas to flow. It's a safe design. Concerning efficiency though, exhausting warm air in the winter, or cool dry air during the summer is not good. They say most our heating losses are due to outside air penetration. No matter how good a house is sealed against outside air penetration, if you push enough air out, that same amount of air will have to come in (eventually) from the outside. The problem is how do you do it so it looks nice and is safe?
@@workingcountry1776 about the only thing that does are lower end gas hot water heaters. Though for a few dollars more you can get ones that use the igniter instead. But outside of restaurant stoves just about nothing in a home uses a pilot light anymore.
Up until a few years ago I was using a Maytag washer that I inherited from my parents that they had bought new in 1975. The only repair it needed while I had it, was a new timer. I passed it on to my sister and she and her husband when I moved and they still use it today. It's now 45 years old and it still runs great. When I got settled into my new house I bought a used GE that is probably 30 years old. I prefer the old appliances as they don't have electronic parts that constantly fail and if something does break, I can repair it myself.
I was an engineering technician in a past life, one of the bigger problems with modern appliances is the bare minimum of circuit board protection. Not even enough protection to pass some common standards. I’ve replaced all of our plain outlets with surge protector outlets. If you want to do this the easy way you can buy surge protection that just plugs into your standard outlet.
I bought my Speed Queen washer and dryer (after the expensive high-end techno brand motor literally sliced through the exterior metal!) at a local appliance dealer who has been in business for years. They aren't pretty, but they are dependable workhorses with a phenomenal warranty.
I totally agree! The new ones now may look so “pretty” but dang, besides being so complicated, it simply doesn’t do the job. And you pointed out the best part, it is Made in the USA!
I found out its just depends on the brand you get I got Samsung washer and dryer and had them for 8 yrs no problems and i haven't had a washer clean my cloths so well. I'm very tough on clothing everything is a towel and they get the job done, And i notice that they don't fade as fast either.
As someone who has been in the laundry industry for over 20 years when I heard you talking at the start of the video I was thinking to myself I should tell him about alliance equipment. But you already found it. Great choice!

We Love our Speed Queens. They look just like yours and there was a deal that included a 25 Year warranty Parts and Labor included. Cannot go wrong there!
No regrets for paying extra 8 years ago for the Speed Queen. Built like a tank, no circuit board gizmo, never loud vibrations, thumping or dancing around.
i install appliances for a living, the new speed queen units are great. they remind me a lot of the units we take out of homes that people have had for 20+ years.
In our area of the Sierras where folks are on wells Lowe's sells a lot of old fashioned wringer washing machines. Which are fun to use. Have helped friends do their laundry using theirs. Our washer and dryer bought in 2004 are white, simple with no bells and whistles, They look like new because we take care of them, like everything we own. Hot or cold water Large, small load options and the spin cycle wrings the water out of the laundry which means when we either line dry or use the dryer the laundry dries faster.
I’m a tech and I can say that Speed Queen is one of the best in the business imo and I know it’s late but you could’ve just cut the dotted line at the bottom of the box and lift it up
Hands down, the best washer on the market! I do wish they didn't have those plastic drum bearings in the dryers but it lasted 6 years before making any racket. I put some good gun oil in it and it went nearly another year before it began squeaking again. @$27 each I'll keep using gun oil once or twice a year 'til it finally wears completely out. Yes, I'm that cheap... A friend has a Speed Queen washer that is 27 years old and has never been serviced! Had a first gen GE front loader for a short while and will NEVER have another front loader again!
Speed queen washers may be built well, But there customer service is horrible. The Alliance Corp is the parent company. My speed queen would dumb suds on the floor. That is with a 2” diameter standpipe 36”tall.
John Jacob, how much detergent is too much. I started out using 2 oz. for a full load. I reduced it to 1oz per load and still had over sudsing on the final spin cycle. There was little to no suds when the lid was opened during wash cycle. I cleaned the machine with vinegar then baking soda. I then went down to 2 tablespoons of detergent. That is not enough to clean a large load of clothes..I was told it was a soap residue. This is after 8 loads of laundry, Mr. Jacobs it’s easy to say user error in this situation but you don’t buy a 1000 dollar machine and just return it. I worked with my local dealer for 8 months. Speed Queen’s customer service was horrible. It’s always easier to blame the customer by saying user error. But it is a washing machine. How hard is it to use. A company can make hundreds of machines they can work as intended. But if you happen to be the customer that gets one that does not perform as intended you really learn a lot about that company. So if you like Speed Queen buy Speed Queen. If you’re one of the customers that gets a machine that has a problem. I hope that You have better results than I did.
@John Jacob No the suds are being generated by the washer. To determine this and rule out the house plumbing, pull the drain line out of the stand pipe when the water has drained out and you will see it fill up a 5 gallon pail with suds. That is with 1 oz of Tide HE detergent. It did with Gain powdered detergent, also HE. Both with and without fabric softener. And yes the house drain is vented. And Speed Queen provides a rubber vent plug. Which by it being a vent suds push through it. Suds cannot push water out of the trap. The suds have no where to go but up the stand pipe. Again no matter what the company these things happen. What defines them as a good company is how they take care of there customers. When a customer has a problem one would think since they have a good reputation, that Speed Queen would want to know what is going on with this particular unit. They did exactly what you did wrote it off as user error.
I hate to say it but these are not the old school mechanical style washers. From what I was told by my local Speed Queen dealer, in 2019 new federal regulations required autofill technology to be present on all residential washers. This can only be done with digitally controlled washers. I have the same washer and the knobs are just electric switches feeding to a control module. I was actually told by the dealer that Speed Queens in house testing showed the touch panels to be more resilient to moisture (from steamy hot water) and last longer than the knobs. I still went with the knobs though, they stay where I left them. Leave it to the federal government to ruin all things good
Joseph, you are right on the mark with the government remark. I bought new gasoline jugs with the government mandated non spill, non fume spouts. With the old style spouts, I NEVER spilled fuel, but with the new handy, dandy interlocked, push this, press that spout I’ve NEVER have had a time where I didn’t slosh gas all over the ground and the mower. And, because you have to press down pretty hard on the inside lever to make it dispense, the tank is developing a crack. This is better?
I recently went back to the OLD school washer and so glad I did. I had 2 HE washers go out at 4 year's. So when it went out I said no more. I found a old school super heavy oversize capacity plus by Maytag I paid 185.00 for it it works like a dream! It has a stainless steel tub I have NEVER been happier! Brought it home gave it a scrub down and now we can wash comforters and no longer have to take them to the laundromat! It looked brand spanking new when we bought it so who ever had it had taken excellent care of it. No rust stains nor scratch marks. Yes I'm in love with my washer❤
Stuff these days are built to tare up not last just like California car makers law it's a good thing TRUMP 2Q2Q is here now bc he is changing all this bs and like all the cheap thin Chevy truck frames from china that all rust out in few years I know everyone has seen the Silverado trucks bent in half but newer models TRUMP 2Q2Q
My wife discovered the same thing a while back! We now have a Speed Queen washing machine for all the reasons you outlined. It was not cheap but the ROI in terms of clean clothes and reliability will more than make up for it.
Speed Queen is hands down the best washer. When I was in college there was a laundromat down the road that was closing down. My roommates and I bought a coin operated speed queen for $100. Beach towels, rugs, shoes, 5 guys work uniforms in one load (we all worked at the same restaurant) nothing phased it or shook it. It was invincible. My old roommate probably still has it.
The house I moved in to 3 years ago had a washer and dryer from the 70s and I can tell you when I move there coming with me ! They even came with the wire diagram so I can fix them !
I needed a new washer. Thanks to this video I researched Speed Queen and purchased their TR5 model on Monday. It is being delivered Wednesday. I can't believe I am this excited for a washer!...
My washer from my grandmother and grandfather had in the early 80s still works in my garage I use it for my work clothes.. crazy thing is that my brand new washer that I've had for 2 years already broke down I've had to replace two pumps on it since then.. old is better lol
I had a Maytag washer and dryer for 20 years and repaired them myself many times but it became harder and harder to find parts. I did a lot of online research before replacing them and found that the newer Speed Queens were not quite as good as the older units. I ended up going with the Maytag Commercial units. Very similar to Speed Queen, only available in white, top loading, knobs instead of fancy displays, doesn't play electronic music when the load is finished. These babies fill the tub all the way to the top and have an actual agitator that doesn't just wiggle back and forth. It screws your clothes from top to bottom in the tub and completely swirls everything.
We have a refrigerator at our camp that we keep drinks in that has an emblem on the door that says " Christmas 1944" It's a General Electric. We have retired at least 5 other refrigerators that I know of and that one still runs like a top.
Thank you for this video. Great fun to watch and useful. Bought My Kenmore top load washer and gas dryer in 1987. Its 2021 and are just now needing replaced. I'm a DWYER but just getting to old to try and fix. They could probably b fixed. Going out today to look for Speed Queen
I love this!! I didn't know anyone makes a good non-electronic washer today. I'm ready to shoot the modern GE that we use. There's nothing like filling up a washer full of water and the washer decides it needs to drain the water out of the tank instead of actually washing the clothes. Thank you for this!
Speed Queens are still electronic and have been for a few years now, it's just that the electronics are controlled by buttons and switches instead of an electronic panel.
When my nephew was learning to read he picked up a can of carburetor cleaner and asked me “what does environmentally friendly mean?”. I told him that means it doesn’t work! Which is 100% true when compared to the old stuff.
I've got a 1945 Kelvinator chest freezer that still runs perfectly well. The only part that has ever been replaced is the power chord because the insulation had dried out and started to show signs of cracking.
My friend's father worked in the plastic molding department at Speed Queen. Their commercial line is the best! We've had ours 20 years and still going!
My wife is the same way, she enjoys the simple things in life. Things that make the chores we have to do a little more enjoyable. Mrs. W looks so happy. I enjoy your channel very much. It is well balanced between projects, family and Faith.
Great video with you and your wife together. My sister has our grandmothers OLD “automatic” toaster from the early 1950’s that still works as good today as it did back then. It had a cord replacement a number of years ago because it was the fabric kind (didn’t want a fire). You just can’t wear those old appliances out. God bless you and your family. Anxious to continue watching the progress on your new shop.
The lid switch on our washer burned out a few years ago. I simply wire-nutted the leads together and it's been running great. So, we can open our lid when it's running too.
Absolutely love our SpeedQueen washer (TC5). Bought it last year with the 10yr Warranty they were offering at the time instead of the 3 year. It's a fantastic machine and worth the money for the years you'll have it. And....as an added bonus....it actually cleans our clothes! There is not another washer out there (including the Maytag commercial) that approaches the quality of the SQ and how well it washes. Great choice.
Hi!! Thank you so much for actually putting down what kind of speed queen you got! I have not purchased the stupid queen ever but my whirlpool that I bought brand new is totally rusted out. The whole frame is a big ball of rust. I could not believe it!!!
Have a speed queen dryer going to take it with when I move. I always ask the old school repair guy. There are some whirlpools that last forever. You want something repairable and mechanical and front load washers get moldy also.
Never Ever use a dolly on the front of a washer or dryer - only the rear. The reason being is that there's a panel in the center on the front that is just a thin piece of sheet metal with electric boards on it that typically control the motors / agitators. Ever notice that washers and dryers seem to always break or have something wrong AFTER you move them into a new place? This is why friends! Cody, I also can't stand the melody at the end of cycles on new washers and dryers! You have to get their application for your cell phone to turn them on and off on some models like on Samsung washers from Home Depot!
I would love a set of speed queens WITH THE AGITATOR and not those little jets at the bottom that just slosh things around and never clean the clothes that are floating on the top! And maybe while I'm at it, I can find some phosphates to sneak into each load so that things actually get clean 🤭
So true about the old washers! I can fix most problems on an old one, the new ones are a pain in the rear to troubleshoot and fix once those computers start reporting secret vague fault codes that you can’t clear without replacing entire modules... that can cost a lot! I love our old washer 😁
My father gave me advice when looking for a wife you should visit the local laundromat. Here you will find a true representation of the woman you may marry, mismatched outfit made up of what clothes were left clean, no makeup, hair not done, generally in a bad mood. Sound advice that served me well!
My wife bought a washer when we first met and it turned out to be an HE machine. She had it 3 days and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't wash the clothes. She returned it and got another. Same thing. I came along and told her that it was an HE and she didn't understand. She didn't believe me because the guy at the store told her that it just meant it cleaned more efficiently and she even bought the 'special detergent.' After the second one refused to work we returned it and got a REAL machine. The return department tried talking her out of it by claiming there was nothing wrong with it and that it worked as designed.
"The return department tried talking her out of it by claiming there was nothing wrong with it and that it worked as designed." That's when you make a complaint to your Visa card and force them to take back their junk and refund your money, Visa will stick by you as THEIR customer.
I’m a third generation appliance repairman. My grandfather started the business in 1938 and I run it now. Speed Queen is the only brand left that I would wholeheartedly recommend. Except they did tick me off by changing the design in 2018. And it’s ⁵⁄₁₆ on that thing, no stupid metric.
sorry folks, I bugged out at 4 minutes. You were taking just a bit too long to get to the point. Here is the secret... washing machines today have planned obsolescence. When your computer goes out, plan on spending 6 to 7 hundred for a new computer, or 9 hundred (or more) for a new machine. BTW... never use regular soap in a high efficiency machine.
I have the same washer and it’s the best washer I have had. At 69 this is my 4th washer..always had Sears or Montgomery Wards…my mom and dad always had Speed Queen and I decided to try the brand after all these years…little more expensive but it works the best. Warranty is very good also …great choice.
As a journey man appliance installer and service man, I can tell you that you did the install wrong. You always install the dryer first so you can connect the venting and make sure it's not kinked, then you install the washer.
Speed Queens they got are the new TR series. Highly debated redesigned agitator and drum (doesn’t clean as well). Speed Queen brought back the Classic TC5 because many speed queen fans like old school wash agitation compared to the TR5. Let’s see how these TR series’s clean. Consumer reports and other RUclips channels giving bad reviews to the slow wash action that doesn’t clean stains. And yes all new speed queens have electronics/ computer boards regardless of series.
I would swear that you have been listening to me and made a RUclips video based on every word came outta my mouth. I rant about the new washers all the time. Computerized yuck!!! I don't want my car doing the driving for me and I don't want my washer dictating how much water, whether I can open the lid, on and on!! All that is needed is a few knobs, right? I have spent lots of money replacing the computers in a new washer cause I tried to control my own laundry and it "confused" the system!! Sorry for yelling, THANK-YOU SO MUCH for finding these washers and dryers, love you guys.
There's nothing environmentally friendly about having to scrap appliances every 5 years because they are not worth fixing.
My 2 year-old Maytag HE is giving me electronics problems. I'm not going to pay to fix it. Eventually we will get a speed queen.
I paid more for my speed queen washer and dryer than what they were trying to sell me at Best Buy, but it's well worth the investment. Never needed all those fancy bells and whistles. Just something that does the job reliably and efficiently.
The fewer digital interfaces, the better. It needs to wash my socks, not land a jet. Technology does NOT always make life easier.

I'm with ya Dagney! My parents had the same washer and dryer until I was in my 30s... Everything since then.. 10 years max.
I will spend 20 hours of labor and endless time troubleshooting and tracking down parts to keep anything old in service. Anything with a computer part will never win as a replacement for longevity
Computer parts cost much less than mechanical parts.

They all tell you if you can open the lid or not these days!
I recommend Speed Queen all the time. I've repaired appliances for over a decade and I can tell you they're the only one built like they used to be!
Just got one last year, love...love...love my speed Queen. Double thumbs up!

A good and cheaper alternative is a Whirlpool Direct Drive top load. If you can find one . Easy to work on and lots of aftermarket parts available.

I remember walking though a big box hardware store and feeling pretty dumb that I couldn't figure out to get the washer started... and I'm only in my late thirties. =) We've had an old Kenmore electric dryer that we bought used and it was no issue to replace the heating element and thermostat when they went out. $80 self repair instead of $300 for a service call on a $150 dryer.
m9 ovich Wow! Hats off to you for keeping it running so long!

THAT DRYER HAS NO PILOT LIGHT. IT HAS AN IGNITER. Gas way better for drying, not electric. Speed Queen makes a good product.
When I heard him say pilot light I cringed because nothing has had a pilot since the early 70s that i know of
@@workingcountry1776 about the only thing that does are lower end gas hot water heaters. Though for a few dollars more you can get ones that use the igniter instead. But outside of restaurant stoves just about nothing in a home uses a pilot light anymore.

When I got settled into my new house I bought a used GE that is probably 30 years old.
Agreed. I never have to work on speed queens
This is after 8 loads of laundry,
Mr.
Maytag has an old school washer/dryer as well (commercial).
Maytag is all foreign non serviceable junk. Maytag is just a label, not an actual manufacturer anymore

I recently purchased a Maytag Commercial washer. I’m still using a Maytag gas dryer from the ‘80s.

I've got a 1945 Kelvinator chest freezer that still runs perfectly well. The only part that has ever been replaced is the power chord because the insulation had dried out and started to show signs of cracking.
Super jealous over here lol.
I miss it, even if it is not mine.
Wow
My friend's father worked in the plastic molding department at Speed Queen. Their commercial line is the best! We've had ours 20 years and still going!
Cool story buckaroo 👌😁

Don't slip up & somehow let your county officials know about this. They'll either fine you or confiscate it (or perhaps even condemn your property)!
@@andyroid5028 Whoa! Communism 101.
And you are employed by Speed Queen, or associated with them via spouse, family, advertising agency...?
@@TuckaBuck89 are you referring to me? I didn't know about SQ until I bought one in 2019.
Phosphates? what do you mean by that?
Can we get an update on the washer and dryer?
So true about the old washers! I can fix most problems on an old one, the new ones are a pain in the rear to troubleshoot and fix once those computers start reporting secret vague fault codes that you can’t clear without replacing entire modules... that can cost a lot! I love our old washer 😁
My father gave me advice when looking for a wife you should visit the local laundromat. Here you will find a true representation of the woman you may marry, mismatched outfit made up of what clothes were left clean, no makeup, hair not done, generally in a bad mood. Sound advice that served me well!

I own an appliance repair company here in Oregon. Speed Queen is the way to go 100% Nice buy. And good on ya for NOT getting a front load washer.
@@rickwensel2313 I mean IDK about dropped I work on them ALLLL the time haha wish theyd be gone for good though.
My whirlpool washer lasted 6 months past the warranty then broke down. Service man said it would cost more to repair that to purchase a new one.
My wife bought a washer when we first met and it turned out to be an HE machine.
She had it 3 days and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't wash the clothes.
She returned it and got another.
Same thing.
I came along and told her that it was an HE and she didn't understand.
She didn't believe me because the guy at the store told her that it just meant it cleaned more efficiently and she even bought the 'special detergent.'
After the second one refused to work we returned it and got a REAL machine.
The return department tried talking her out of it by claiming there was nothing wrong with it and that it worked as designed.

That's when you make a complaint to your Visa card and force them to take back their junk and refund your money, Visa will stick by you as THEIR customer.
Wow thanks for the wisdom. Was not aware these was still being made. Oldies But Goodies are the best.
Maytag has a commercial model. i think its a tad better than speed queen but not by much.
What kind of trees are there around the house and on the property ?
We bought the same ones, for the same reasons. Tired of buying them over and over. Consumer grade junk at big box stores.
I wish Speed Queen would also make dish washers.
sorry folks, I bugged out at 4 minutes.
What models did you get? I heard the new ones aren't as reliable as they used to be, is this one different? Thanks!
How dare you not use high efficiency, must be nice to have clean clothes after only one cycle.
Links if somebody wanted to purchase them ? As always Thx you both for sharing the dream...
When I looked for washing machine nnthe UK I bought a Miele as the average live span of those washers was 25 years.
I've only seen a handful of your videos. I just love you both. Thank you for letting us into your world. May God bless everything you do.
What is the model #
The old school Whirlpools with the coupled direct drive are the best and most repairable washers ever.
Thats a miracle you silly little goose
I have my 28 year old Whirlpool Direct Drive Washing Machine. Still running strong!!!
We did the exact same thing and went with Speed Queen, the newer HE machines are nothing but junk and are made to last 2-3 years.
Which model did you get? Does your last forever or did you get a HE new one?
@@user-nh3gu1ge3d hey buckaroo
I would swear that you have been listening to me and made a RUclips video based on every word came outta my mouth. I rant about the new washers all the time. Computerized yuck!!! I don't want my car doing the driving for me and I don't want my washer dictating how much water, whether I can open the lid, on and on!! All that is needed is a few knobs, right? I have spent lots of money replacing the computers in a new washer cause I tried to control my own laundry and it "confused" the system!! Sorry for yelling, THANK-YOU SO MUCH for finding these washers and dryers, love you guys.
