I know it’s an older video but just wanted to say thank you!! Just finished mine and followed all of your directions. Came out pretty! Just wish the yamalube paint had a wider spray pattern. Not matter what I did I couldn’t make the lines totally disappear. Even after 3 coats of paint. Thanks again!!
@@ExtremeDIYGuy update: turns out they sent me one can of 4d in place of all 8d!!! No wonder I couldn’t get rid of the lines!! Ugh. Sand and redo…. Always check the cans! Ugh they looked identical.
I got more out of this cowling paint video than the two main others. You explained everything perfectly and didn't over sand, paint, etc. I've read about it there jobs getting the orange peel on the clear coat - it appears the 2k you use and over lap tech keep that to a minimum...Thanks!
Once again an excellent video. Nice job. It inspires me. I have a 2002 25 hp Yamaha 4 stroke that is faded badly from the sun because a teenager owned the boat before I bought it. I'm definitely going to sand and paint and decal it now.
Super video on how to get a superb result with cans including all the safety you need plus as is obvious preparation and planning gives the best results. I imagine this could applied to other parts on a boat and would work well for Motorcycle Fairings or Side panels etc. Preparation is key..
Gday mate i have to do this to my cowling i just checked out the price on amazon au 107.00 for the 3m wheel im gonna try the heat gun and if it dont work ill chew em off .
Great video man! What is that squeegee called that you used to press the water out from under the sticker and where did you get it? Also, what is the mix ratio for the soapy water? Thanks.
I just purchased a BW. 1985 S.S. 15. The 70 horse cowling and lower unit need tlc. Having watched this video I’m going to redo the cowling, but have you ever repainted the lower unit?
Followed your video with my 90 2 stroke yam and after sanding and wiping it down I went to the primer and the cowling won't take paint in 4 or 5 spots. Any ideas? Its sanded down to the fiberglass in those spots too and the paint just dissipates after spraying and its white behind it.
Sticky question, If it were me, I would put another coat of the base color on after a light sanding and then put the 2k on over that. I'm pretty sure if you put 2k on over cured paint that it will craze.
thanks for posting. question, i am in the process of refinishing my yam f150. I am getting dust from over spray landing on the top painted surface. i am thinking need to wet sand that before additional coat. How did you deal with that?
First I would figure out why you are getting overspray, I didn't have to deal with that. But if you have overspray, you will have to sand it down between coats, I would go with the finest grit possible that will do the job without damaging the underlying coat.
@@ExtremeDIYGuy Thanks, got it. Thanks for the video, it was exactly what I was looking for. I followed your steps on my Yamaha 150 and it came out better than I expected. Thanks again.
@@ExtremeDIYGuy awesome thanks. Couple more questions. What brush do you recommend for roll and tip? Also how much paint is really needed to do bottom side of a whaler? 1 quart? 1 gallon? Trying to get all my supplies together. Your videos are awesome btw! I’ll be rewatching them again and again as I go.
Badger hair brush if you can get it, Jamestown distributers have a good selection. If your rolling Interlux perfection, you can thin it to 12-15% and roll it with a foam roller without tipping, it will settle into a nice glossy finish,
I'll be honest, that confused me as well and I honestly cant remember which was for what. I would try 04d on a test piece and see if it works. I think they are similar enough in appearance that no one would really be able to tell the difference.
One of the most useful videos with timing to apply various coats😀
Glad you think so! Thanks for the kinds words!

Would clear coating over the stickers help in the longterm?

I used the 3 m wheel on my Yamaha 115 2 stroke decal it works great

Save your teeth! Amazon has quite a few knockoff wheels for a lot less!
Excellent. What grit block did you use to sand the fairing compound?
Very helpful video!!

Man! Came out great.
Thanks Zack!

Great video man! What is that squeegee called that you used to press the water out from under the sticker and where did you get it? Also, what is the mix ratio for the soapy water? Thanks.
The squeegee came with the stickers. No set ratio, just a light squeeze and fill up with water!

I would try a different primer. Perhaps a specialty primer that is made for or compatible with fiberglass.
Great job Thanks
You bet!
Nice job
Where can we get the decals thx in avance didn’t see link

Awesome video. Did you do any other wet sanding of the Yamaha paint or clear coat that wasn’t filmed?
That would be cheating lol. So nope, All the work is covered in the video.
You're an artiste, man.
@@ExtremeDIYGuyI’m going to try your method on my outboards. Wish me luck!
I let my base color dry for 3 days. Would I need to wet sand before applying the 2k clear since I waited so long?
Sticky question, If it were me, I would put another coat of the base color on after a light sanding and then put the 2k on over that. I'm pretty sure if you put 2k on over cured paint that it will craze.
I needed 2 cans of colorcoat to get the same result. Why that is i dont know

Any tips for painting the aluminum lower part of a yamaha? I have a small bit of corrosion bubbling underneath the paint on the seams
Use a similar technique as you would on the cowling, but I would fix the corrosion first.
Do you have a link available for those decals?
outboardgraphics.com/#
Are there any issues using 2K which is an acrylic with the Yamalube enamel based paint?
You mentioned a link to the UK decal manufacturer. Is that available?
Hi, yes, I just updated the description and added the link there, outboardgraphics.com/

I'm afraid not, sorry!

How did you match up the decals to the original placement?
I eyeballed it and took pictures of the original to guide me
What do you think about using spraymax 2k over total boat wet edge to paint the hull on a 13 whaler?
I wouldn't It will probably dissolve the wetedge. I would just use a two part poly like Interlux perfection instead

What’s the difference between the 04D and 08D paint because I have the 04D paint and I’m not sure if I should use it. I have the same engine as you.

To figure out what color your motor is, look at the part number for a part like the bottom cowling. It will end in 4D or 8D for the correct color.
Did you have much orange peel texture in the clear?
Nope, perfectly smooth.
What do you think of putting clear over the decals?
I thought about it but the folks that make the decals advised against it.
@@ExtremeDIYGuy Glad I asked. Thanks
looks great! good job
Thanks!
No sanding after base coat?
Only after the primer
goog job
Thanks!
