Fantastic bit of kit Thom and I can see many people investing to better understand what's going on in the depths. Many people are going to get that Eureka moment and take their angling to the next level
Yep not been out long and I’ve had so many great conversations with people and messages from people who have one about interesting stuff they’ve seen or discovered 💪
That underwater footage is amazing. What do you think the minimum visibility is for the camera to be useful? I presume the murkier the water is the closer you’d want the camera to be to the lure and maybe that’s ok since the fish also have less visibility. Also after reading some of the other comments, what do you think the minimum distance is that you need to cast to not have tangling issues (eg would you consider this in a canal, a river, or only on large rivers, lakes and reservoirs)?
Great information as always Tom :) My current opinion after few weeks: Pros: Weight and being able to switch it on or of without taking it apart are major advantaged. Cons: -when you have the dive lip on, you are unable to use the tool for opening it. (I was kinda laughing at this as it seems like a joke) to open it I use plyers which is far from ideal. -the fins for extra stability although great for keeping the shot stable tangled the line when casting in 50/50 ratio. I found way more useful to attach different weights with rubber band and then change it depending on lure I'm using. Produces perfect angle. -for easy attachment, stainless steel wire trace with hook eye, easy to clip on or off instead of original rigging. -for whatever reason the kodek the videos are made wouldn't play on my phone but work ok on laptop or tablet. I definitely like it more than the water wolf I used for last few months and with few modification it actually works great. Only thing I need to figure is the rig that would 100% prevent tangling as I did with WW. My escape also is now silver with eyes :) kinda big teaser lure style
Interesting on the feedback thank you. I know what you mean regarding tangling, mine is maybe 10% of the time. However I make sure the cast is as smooth as possible to stop the camera and lure swinging a lot in the air. And then slow feather the line to shoot lure in front of the camera and this helps hugely. Also don’t let it sink on a slack line!
@@Thomhuntfishing Thank you for the tip Thom, the casting style helps a lot. (especially in lake or river) I use this camera and others on West coast of Ireland when bass fishing so the swell, waves, wind, weeds, etc is a huge factor too. Especially when casting into a stronger side or head wind it tends to tangle a lot. (but again :) this will get fixed by mod which is easy to do) Btw the opening of the camera could be done by having a slot in the front (like a flat coin slot) that would allow to open it regardless of attachment, instead of having a tool that goes over the cap. (cheaper to manufacture too) :) glad if I could help a bit with feedback, I think it is an amazing product and what I learned by casting the camera around the last few months is amazing :) Kinda having the great experience 2x (once when fishing and second when reviewing the footage)
@@TomasJanicek If you apply a little silicone grase on the o-ring it turns very easily. Then no pliers are needed. I can turn the end cap with just one hand when the o-ring is greased.
@@michaeltroest1thanks for the tip :) I made few slots into the cap so it turns no problem now. On the other hand having only one rubber seal kinda makes me nervous.
defo going to buy one next year, been eyeing gup the waterwolf, but this is far more verstile on lighter rods, can also use it same way for general coarse fishing too, as well as deadbaiting. Thanks Westin :)
@@Thomhuntfishing hopefully rivers will clear up a bit before my pike season ends, mainly deadbaiting but then onto tenching on some Very clear still waters...will keep you posted.
Hi Paul, yes it’s an old Gunki handle that’s discontinued and a random screw in head I got years ago and don’t know the name/brand. Out of interest, as I’ve had about half a dozen people ask me specifically about it….. why is everyone so interested in it? It’s a basic extendable handle and net head, nothing all that interesting!
@@Thomhuntfishing I fish for Perch but on my waters catch more Pike up to low doubles. I’ve never had much faith in things telescopic with mud and grit about to jam the sections. I can remember tele roach poles in the mid ‘70s. So I use a Drennan Specialist 3m handle with a Korum Tilta net. It’s good for reaching over the reeds but cumbersome. The set up you were using looked ideal - large net head and a long reach pole. I have looked at Westin’s offerings but nets are too small or handle too short. I know you don’t use crap so who better to ask. It impressed me👍
The handle in question only extends to 1.8m but is long enough unless there’s lots of Bankside vegitation. For a longer handle I use the Westin W6 4m carbon handle with medium net head and had pike up to about 12lb in it so it’s pretty versatile but for some places I almost find the handle too long. On our standard C&R net the handle is extendable but fairly short so definitely look at the W6 Carbon net if you need a long, strong handle
Gonna definitely need to get one. I'd love to use it vertical fishing/deadsticking for zander, would be fun to see the savage takes. Also just casting the cam around my locals to get more of an underwater perspective and see what the reasons are for the fish holding certain areas. Great tool and a great product from westin 👍
Hi Thom, Do you know if anyone has used this in conjunction with a bottom bait to watch reactions and possibly hooked a fish for retrieve.. Thinking about the tench/small carp species and seeing their interactions etc. ? Seems a superb product and would use it not only with my new passion found for Perch (Thanks to YPC2023 UK) but also my other persuits. Cheers Paul.
Hi Paul, yes I know carp anglers that use the camera to investigate spots they’ve been fishing for a while (mostly to see if there’s still food in the swim) and the freshwater applications beyond lure fishing are huge. On a clear lake, what used to take hours to carefully marker float out a swim can now be done by fan casting the camera the. Reviewing the footage and seeing the gravel areas/weed beds etc. it could also be used on a legered rig, I think guys have tried it with deadbaits and pike but no reason it can’t be used for tench as well…..
@@Thomhuntfishing thanks Thom. This is definitely on my fun budget next month as I've spent my limit on the w3 rod so gonna grab one of these and hook it up to my 3lb carp rod and braid for watching the lake beds for movements/action. Thanks again for a great informative channel!
Hi there, I’m not sure as I don’t believe the camera has built in clock or Wi-Fi access that would allow it to know what the time or date was. I have adjusted settings like the frame rate from 30 to 60 per second, and this is done via the micro SD card. Once it’s been in the camera, there will be a Settings file automatically in the card, which can be found and adjusted when plugged in to your computer, so have a look as time/date might be in there.
@Thomhuntfishing thanks for the fast answer. Appreciate it I've changed the settings like frame rate and stabilising, but that didn't change the timestamp. but I'll look into it again with the date of the file
Not a bad price either, probably use it without a lure just to scope out what's out there. Obviously with a heavy wire trace wouldn't want to loose it.

I’d say about 2-3ft of visibility but then also depends on the depth. With 2ft vis you’d need to keep it fairly close to the surface like 1-5ft deep
Really good information and tips in there Thom! Thank you 😁
No problem, I enjoy making long form content so wanted to give a deep dive in to what I have learned from the camera

Yes exactly, can be used as a viewing tool even without a lure. Being able to review footage on your phone on the bank makes it a game changer
