    This guy is right on. I 've owned a house since '77 with asbestos roof shingles that was built in '43 mostly by women, all of the men were overseas fighting. I coated it last year with airport runway sealer and it looks brand new! Just remember don't drill, sand or break it and nothing to be afraid of. I wonder how many fiberglass shingles would last that long? I bet none!

    When I trained in aircraft crash recovery we trained to protect ourselves against burnt composites. (DO NOT fuck with burned composite parts without protection!) The way the Air Force controls friable composites is to spray heavily with undiluted floor wax, the stuff you buy in 5 gallon pails. We then wrapped the composite in clear "crash wrap" (plastic sheeting) and secured with duct tape. I have asbestos shingles I don't disturb because they work very well and cause no problems, but if I ever remove any they'll get a wax bath and crash wrap. I'll mask up and wear Tyvek coveralls to do the work. Not a problem.

    A nightmare to be sure - there's no easy, quick solution.
    And they don't give away those (non-asbestos) replacement shingles that break if you look at them hard. The best bet is getting them off a tear down, etc.
    The end nippers are a must - along with gobs of patience. Aluminum nails are relatively easy to deal with because they can be sheared off with a stout putty knife (which you slide under the shingle) and a hammer. But pulling them is far preferable. Good luck on those nails not breaking, though.
    Stainless steel nails are a different matter. They must be pulled, and often they are tenacious, residing as they are in old, _hard_wood. A sheared off nail head can present a problem, if you're looking to replace that shingle later. New (drilled) hole, caulk up the old hole...yikes.
    Being way up on a ladder doesn't help - the pulled nails will come out suddenly sometimes, and you could lose your balance. So bending the nails out slowly as shown is a must. You might want to think about a _good_ dust mask also. Think about that real hard.
    The real pain is the hidden nails up under the top edge of each shingle, where a partial removal (say around a window) is sometimes necessary. Then sometimes you must resort to a hacksaw blade to blind saw them suckers off.
    Oh, and did I mention? Contractors will make an infuriating mess if you're looking to keep the asbestos siding but are just having repairs/retro-fitting done. Hit a lick... and then head to the barn - except for the ones who simply tell you, "We refuse to deal with those things."

    • @hamstersniffer
      @hamstersniffer 9 лет назад +13

      No, actually it doesn't. Asbestos shingles were pre-drilled with a hole large enough to accomodate a nail, otherwise, nailing them up would bust them. So if you just extract the nail, it's like un-threading a needle. As long as you don't shatter them there is no danger because the asbestos is held together with a binder. The asbestos is only hazardous in it's micro-fibrous form and when airborne. You can handle the shingles, remove them, hell, you can lick one if you want. Just don't inhale or ingest the dust. That's the killer.

    • @paulthepaddler
      @paulthepaddler 9 лет назад +3

      hamstersniffer There are visible flakes from the chisel and nipper and I do not see any precautions being taken to contain the fibers that would escape.
      In my area contractors are not allowed to remove asbestos without proper training and licence. I discussed this recently with a GC who informed me that any exposed asbestos they are required to shut down and call in the specialists. Not only do they suit up to remove asbestos shingles but they will only work on calm rainy days because the summer sun makes it problematic to keep the shingles damp for the entire process which is an important part of containment.

      +Leananshae Keep in mind that there is far more asbestos in the dirt below the wall than the siding piece will shed. Simply walking by this wall is just as hazardous. A respirator is a good idea, but the rest is just overkill. MOST people that get cancer from asbestos are from working at manufacturers that used it, or working heavily with the INSULATION, which will put massive amounts of this stuff into the air. Removing the shingles, rinsing them off and bagging, and rinsing yourself while wearing a respirator is usually all that is needed. Wash clothing on site if you can. Remember, asbestos is NOT poison, and if you don't smoke, it is very unlikely you will get cancer from minimal exposure if you are careful.

      Every thing you said is specific to regulations in a certain area. Regulation vary depending on the state and locality. There are exemptions that allow unlicensed people to perform some asbestos removal work. If the exemptions apply and you do it, be sure you comply with the APPLICABLE regulations, because someone who does asbestos abatement work will probably tell a regulator that what you are doing is wrong to drum up more business for themselves. Even if you are licensed to do asbestos removal and are complying with regulations, someone might notify a regulator to disadvantage a competitor.
