I think they've become more consistently great live over the past 15 years! Before, they could also be rather awful at times 😅 (at least by what I've seen here on YT)
I've been to only 1 of their shows so far, in Cologne/Germany and when they were touring their self-titled album in 2004, and it was pretty good, too! 😊
I've watched several later shows on YT that still were quite a bit better and also longer, though 🙂
Great band! One of my all-time favourites!

I've been a massive fan of the Cure for forty-six years. "Faith" is my favourite of their albums and "Primary," particularly the full-length original - never reissued - 12" version is not simply my favourite of their singles but one of my most-beloved singles ever. I think it is absolute perfection. I am indeed addicted. BTW, never listen to critics or read reviews!

Love Primary. Been a fan since I was 15 (I'm 53) and I still go hard when it comes to them. Been to 5 shows and hoping there'll be a couple more. They've been with me through the good and the bad. And yes, the heavy bass is a bonus for me. They have great lines. In addition to SImon, RS plays a 6 string bass.

Now that you've heard both studio versions of A Forest and Primary, I would suggest checking out their more recent live performances of the song to hear the difference between then and now. Live Cure is a force to be reckoned with.

"Primary" is one of Faith's two most upbeat tracks. Yep, at the time The Cure were developing what you might call an austere sound, based more on atmosphere than melody, but personally I'm fine with it and Smith's vocals on "Primary" are pretty catchy, despite the deliberately restrained selection of instruments (two bass guitars and monolithic drums for a single was a pretty brave and risky choice, but it worked out pretty well in the end).
Later in the autumn of 1981, The Cure released a great non-album single entitled "Charlotte Sometimes", which returned to something more ‘classic sounding’ (though still in a ‘neurasthenic’ mood), for which there is also a video (which you could watch next time😉).

    • @a.k.1740

@@Kevvinm The original Faith album never had "Charlotte Sometimes" on it because this non-album single was recorded in July 81, four months after the end of the Faith sessions (completed in March 81 and released in April). "Charlotte Sometimes" was released in October 81.
It was not until 2005 that the single was added as a bonus track to the double deluxe edition of Faith on CD.
On the other hand, on some of the original Faith cassette editions, there was a long instrumental of almost 28 minutes on side two entitled "Carnage Visors", which was the soundtrack to an animated short film of the same name directed by Ric Gallup (brother of bassist Simon Gallup) and which was projected on screen in place of an opening band on The Cure's ‘81 Picture Tour. This track also features as a bonus track on the deluxe CD edition of Faith in 2005.

@@mightyV444 I'm not sure I've ever seen the Bonnie Tyler video so I can't compare, but it's interesting info, and it gave me the idea to see if there were any other videos shot there for other artists, which seems to be the case. Some of them include Adam Ant and also Cocteau Twins!

      m.ruclips.net/video/fsgWUq0fdKk/видео.html 😁
And that abandoned mental institution seems to have been a popular spot for filming! 😀
By the way, what was the other upbeat song on the 'Faith' album again?! 'The Funeral Party'?
      😅 😉
I do like this album, though 🙂 It probably hits native English speakers differently than someone like myself, who's originally German and doesn't register its lyrics unless I focus on them, so it's mostly just vibe and atmosphere to me. Even after having lived in NZ for over 20 years and speaking English 80% of the time 😀

This track always ends up on my post punk playlist, love the driving nature of the song. If you happen to go down more of a post punk rabbit hole Siouxsie and the Banshee’s are a must . Suggested tracks , Spellbound, Christine, Hong Kong Garden.
My favorite lp from the early 80’s post punk era , and in my top ten of all time , is Echo and The Bunnymen’s Heaven Up Here lp. Suggested tracks, A Promise or Over the Wall.

As for the '2 basses' thing, I'm pretty sure Smith played a Fender Bass VI on the actual recording, and the two identical P-basses were just a visual idea for this clip and for TV appearances (My own bass looks like theirs, too 🙂)
And despite Mathieu Hartley's departure, there still are keyboards also on _this_ album. One of the reasons he left was that he wanted to play more chord-based stuff while Smith had expected him to play really basic and simple melodies, just like on 'A Forest'. There's a story of Hartley frustratedly throwing his synth into the audience during one of his last gigs with the band 😅
By the way, the 'Faith' album's cover art was done by Porl (now Pearl) Thompson, who'd join The Cure on guitar further down the line.
And it's great that you feel inspired to check out more of their repertoire, Justin!
    😀👍
PS: Playing downstrokes on the bass at that tempo for three and a half minutes is quite challenging! 😅

I'm most familiar with the '...in Orange' live version, which is being played with bass, Bass VI and guitar, and hence also my suspicion of a Bass VI being used on the studio version. Plus, it says on the 'Standing On A Beach - The Singles' album under this song, "Robert Smith - vocals/guitar" 🙂

Sort of a sophomore slump on this one. They were down to a trio, and each side of the album is less than 20 minutes, so you get the sense they struggled to get enough material together for it. I know the next album is where they *really* dive into the gloomy goth stuff, so I'm curious to see what JP thinks about that! But yeah, I'm with those who say Siouxsie and the Banshees were the better band for this kind of thing. At least during this time period.
