@@andrew7196: Russ and Pickett are two VERY different QBs, and the Steelers wanted to have Russ and Pickett in their QB room. The Steelers had no idea Russ would really be available to them. Teams were skeptical that the Broncos would be this stupid! They all knew Fields was and didn’t want him, and that includes the Steelers. The Steelers only opened up to bringing him in after Pickett imploded because he didn’t want to compete with Russ.

Mark Schlereth was actually complimentary of Russ a few weeks ago. He’s even pushing back on the notion that Russ is declined physically. Schlereth’s problem with Russ is Russ’s attitude. He believes Russ lacks self-awareness, and despite my constant defense of Russ, I have to agree to some extent. He comes off as being a phony, even if he’s not trying to. He needs to be more relatable.
When he got with Ciara, I didn’t want to believe that she would taint him, but I believe his career would have been better if he hadn’t married her.
The Russell Wilson who was drafted by Seattle would’ve preferred to stay in Seattle and not left. Russ made a mistake in leaving Seattle for Denver. I don’t necessarily believe it would’ve been a mistake to leave at all, but going to Denver was a huge mistake.

A very good interview with Dulac. Steelers are improved. Emphasis will be on the running game and have a better OC than Matt Canada was. My question can putting most of your eggs in the running basket win in today's passing NFL? Steelers need another prominent Wide Receiver with George Pickens. How do you outscore Prominent passing teams & keep your RBs healthy???

I think it can, because 3 reasons: 1) defenses are designed to be fast, and stop the pass. 2) sub packages and focus on more defensive backs takes resources away from the trenches. 3) the highest paid defensive players are edge rushers, and running the ball basically takes them out of the game.

So , he's saying Russ is the starter? Everybody wants a QB controversy, everybody in the media that is. I as a Steeler fan don't , you know the whole 2 QBs equal no QBs thing. I just hope they can keep Fields because he can be a star in this league. The Naj/Warren thing look Warren is getting the better snaps for explosive plays that Naj used to get, Naj is capable of that, is Warren capable of what Naj does? They're both great, and it's a good problem to have. The D line, and lack of addressing it, it wasn't a great off season to do so, I think they feel the improvement to the ILB room in support of it will suffice this season, and will address it in the next draft, a much better draft for defensive lineman.

    • @DeCurtaRican
      @DeCurtaRican Месяц назад

@@john670: Fields is the future WHAT? That’s the question. Age has nothing to do with this. They rooted for Brady and Stafford when they left their teams, and they’re rooting for Cousins and Rogers, both of whom are older than Russ, and still rooting for Stafford. They’re also rooting for Flacco.
There’s an agenda being pushed against Russ, and it’s coming from someone very powerful. Too many media members are on code with the Russ-bashing and the pushing of a WB who was so bad that no teams wanted him despite the purported advantages YOU seem to believe he possesses.
Fields may be 10 years younger than Russ but he does nothing better than Russ, not even run. Russ is a matter runner and balances his passing and running prowess. All fields can do is run, and he doesn’t know how to protect his body. That’s why he has missed more games in 3 years than Russ has missed in 12.
Fields is the future my a$$. Russ still has 4-5 good years left in him, and the Steelers are Sean-now team. Why would they start an obvious project over a proven winner who just last season had top-10 performances in meaningful statistics?!
Fields’s best season doesn’t even measure up to Russ’s worst (2022).
*Here are Russ’s 2023 numbers (in 15 games, not 17).*
      3,070 Yards
      26 TDs
      3 Rushing TDs (341 yards, 386 equiv.)
      8 INTs
      66.4% Complete
      98 Passer Rating
      *Russ’s 2023 Rankings:*
1st in Fourth Qtr comebacks (4)
      1st in Game-Winning Drives (4)
2nd in Adj. Completion Rate (78.8%)*
      2nd in TD% (5.9)
      3rd in TD% (5.8)
      4th in Completion Differentials
      5th in TD-INT Ratio (26:8)
      7th in Passer Rating (98.0)
      9th in TDs (26)
      9th in INT Rate (1.8)
10th in INTs among qualified QBs (8)
      11th in Completion% (66.4%)
      T-13th in INT% (2.0)
According to Sports Info Solutions (SIS), Russ’s arm is as deadly as ever!
He completed six passes that flew 40+ air yards past the original line of scrimmage (for 301 yards), good for #1 in the league. Four of those six went for TDs, and the two that didn’t were attributed as drops by the targeted receivers.
Russ attempted 16 such passes, and 10 were deemed on target by SIS.
Of those 16 attempts, not a single one resulted in an interception.
Russ had one of the league’s top deep-ball passer ratings, led the league in red zone efficiency for half the season.
Rushed for 341 yards in 15 games, which is the equivalent of 386 yards over 17 games, or 220%+ times the rush yards of the average NFL QB. That was with Sean Payton suppressing his numbers. Russ is still capable of rushing for 400-500 yards! That’s ELITE!
He also had 4 of the top-5 least probable completions and led the Broncos to a #1 red zone performance rating for half the season.
He achieved that with his own coach hating him, and despite that hate, the Broncos still wanted to keep Russ for one more season. They were willing to guarantee his 2025 salary in exchange for Russ deferring his 2024 injury guarantee. Russ rejected the deal because he didn’t want to play there anymore.
Context is everything. Russ’s YPG metric is low because Payton had him checking down all the time. Russ could easily have had 6-7 game-winning drives. Payton cut them short, particularly against NE.
QBR is suspect statistic. ESPN won’t reveal its methodology, and it relies on inputs from the running game, O-Line and receivers. It’s a flawed statistic that rewards QBs who have strong weapons.
      2024: Will perform.

*Career 4th quarter passer rating: 104* (vs. 53)
Fields has a slight advantage in rushing. Russ is superior in every other department. That small rushing advantage isn’t nearly enough to compensate for Russ’s superiority as a passer, especially if we discuss 4th quarter metrics.
If we discount Russ’s Denver years, Russ’s 3-year average stats would be better than Fields’s by an even larger margin, even if we include two injury years in Seattle (2016 and 2021) that produced outlier statistics.
While both take a lot of sacks, Russ has taken them due to bad/inconsistent O-Lines and pure stubbornness on his part. Fields takes them more because he isn’t a great reader of defenses. His O-Lines have been better than Russ’s.

Go look at the Steelers record against the Ravens the last 4-5 years. Jackson has yet to play a decent game against them. Burrow played the worst game of his career against them a few years ago. He had a million sacks and at least three interceptions. Watson is Watson, no fears there. It’s about what they do outside the division. It’s losing against bad teams. It’s the letdowns that kill them.

    • @DeCurtaRican
      @DeCurtaRican Месяц назад

The caveat is if Watson wakes up. Watson has not been Watson since he went to Cleveland. WATSON-Watson played in Houston. If THAT Watson finally appears in Cleveland this year, he’s going to be a problem. Russ can still outperform him but he’s going to be a problem.
People are going to think I’m crazy for saying this, but Russ is the best QB in that division. He’s going to start over Fields because Fields is nowhere near his level. Lamar Jackson is a runner, and he’s never going to win a SB. I doubt he will ever play in one.
Burrow can’t even stay on the field.
If people leave Russ alone and let him do his thing, he can own this division just like he owned the NFCw.
And believe it or not, he was the best QB in the AFCw last year during the regular season.
Mahomes came on late and obviously had a nice playoff push, but Russ outperformed him during the regular season with an inferior squad, and he was doing it while playing for a coach who hated him and didn’t exactly keep it a secret. Even worse, that coach was low-key trying to tank the season away for high draft status.
Russ and Mahomes had subpar seasons in 2023, even if Russ’s 2023 was an improvement from his 2022 season. I expect both to be back to normal this year, with both returning to their 2018-2020 forms.

Russ always looks great in training camp no matter who he runs with. Can the same be said for Fields?
      People need to remember something:
Russ was cut by the Broncos due to personal whim of Sean Payton, politics, logistics, finances, and a little bit of attempted revenge that backfired.
Russ refused an accommodation. He refused to defer his injury guarantee for a year in n exchange for the Broncos guaranteeing his 2025 salary by keeping him for another season. N other words, the Broncos weren’t planning on cutting Russ. They wanted to keep him for another season. They couldn’t trade him b/c he had a no-trade clause and wasn’t going to do them any favors. He refused to accommodate their request knowing they would cut him.

The Steelers would have to come out of pocket for $40M if Russ got hurt, and he would STILL collect the other $38M from the Broncos and the $1.2M in salary from the Steelers.
That injury guarantee doubles his salary. That’s why the Broncos wanted him to defer it for a year in exchange for guaranteeing his 2025 salary.
The Broncos wanted to keep him for at least another year. Russ understandably wanted out of Denver.

Two comments by Gerry gave me pause: one, that these running backs are a perfect fit for Smith's offense, except Smith loves zone running and Najee and Warren both are average in zone schemes and have achieved all of their success in gap running schemes. two, that the big question mark on the defense is the D line? it's obviously the secondary. Besides Peterson and Minkah it's a bunch of warm bodies, that's it.
And for Tomlin capers, it's not just the playoff drought, it's more that we consistently under-perform against awful teams and great teams. His personnel decisions can be head scratching (Dan Moore is going to start at LT this year for christ's sake). He's too conservative, he's a dinosaur in this league
