  • In the early morning of 1 August 1915, a formation of British bombers attacked the German airfield at La Brayelle. The airfield, located about 2 miles West of Douai, was home to German aviation unit “Feldflieger Abteilung 6”. The German unit’s Eindeckers were equipped with Anthony Fokker’s newest synchronisation gear. In the coming months, the Eindeckers and their pilots would inflict heavy losses upon the British and the French. 1 August was the day Max Immelmann gained his first confirmed aerial victory, and is remembered as the beginning of the "Fokker Scourge".

I’ve flown an Eindecker in my early career, and I even met Immelmann when he was only 18, and he had 5 enemies bagged. He was a good and eager young fellow. Another legend that died too young. Rest In Peace, Max, Jasta 2 will never forget you.

The British aircraft that attacked the La Brayelle airfield on 1 August 1915 were B.E.2cs of No. 2 Squadron Royal Flying Corps. The video depicts Sopwith 1½ Strutters because, on that day, as often in that period, the attackers had no defensive armament, and the 1½ Strutter is the only British bomber in RoF that can be flown witout gunner. Also, Max Immelmann's aircraft is here E.III 246/16, which he flew later in the war. The aircraft he flew in summer 1915 was E.I 13/15, an earlier variant armed with an MG 08.

It’s alright that there are historical inaccuracies in the planes, everyone just wants the entertainment. Great video anyways! Very cinematic.

There were no Sopwith Strutters with synchronise Vicker MGs in 1915.
