  • Since SFMTA is now rolling out new Siemens S200 Streetcars onto the Muni Metro Network, I decided to chase one down, and ride it for of course my pleasure, but most importantly your pleasure. Hope you enjoy!

    Wow! These look good. Thanks for the ride! Many transit RUclips channels show the outsides of trains and trams. Rarely do you get the feel of riding in one. I’ve liked and subscribed!

    S200s are nicer than the Ansaldobredas they replace. The Ansaldobreda's were in use since approx late August 1997 AFAIK, I did not get to ride them until January 1998. Are there any Boeing Vertols to be seen, even in the Balboa Park yard? I think starting July 1999 they were being withdrawn but I remember riding them as late as Friday 16th July 1999 on the L Taraval line from the Zoo to Powell Street via West Portal and Church stations. I remember one Boeing Vertol shipped as far away as Half Moon Bay, was very unusual to see one like that so far away from the MUNI network.

      amiausUSA No; the Boeing’s have been replaced entirely by the Bredas for over a decade I believe.

      BART also got new Bombardier/Alstom trains. Caltrain is electrifying and bought incredible Stadler Kiss bi-level trains. Oh, and the San Joaquins is getting Siemens Venture cars and Siemens Charger locomotives like Brightline and VIA rail.
      Rail transportation in the Bay Area has been killing it lately! They're getting new equipment, expanding service, and speeding up lines, and they have a lot more upgrades coming down the pike. This is literally just a taste! It's pretty exciting what they're doing!

    My favorite part of the ride was always between Forest Hill and Castro . Those trains can haul ass if you consider 50 mph that .

    • @lohphat
      @lohphat 3 года назад +2

      It's only recently that's been possible because the tracks were out of alignment due to maintenance neglect and damage caused by the overweight Breda cars.
      I lived near West Portal and the tunnel was closed TWICE for almost a year each time to repair the tracks and replace the overhead power wire -- typical Muni planning incompetence -- they couldn't do both at the SAME TIME so they inconvenienced thousands of customers who had to take bus replacement service for those periods.

    • @TohaBgood2
      @TohaBgood2 Год назад

      @@lohphat Those Bredas were real pigs, metaphorically speaking! People say that they will miss them, but I certainly won't. The Bredas are one of the reasons people don't trust the Muni Metro. The constant breakdowns they had actually contributed to people using transit less! The new Siemens S200/LRV4s are designed to have 4x the reliability of the Bredas!
      Teething issues aside (which literally every kind of vehicle will have!), we should all be extremely glad that we're getting proper, world class Muni equipment! I know that they are shaped the same and do some of the same things, but the new Siemens vehicles aren't even in the same universe in terms of quality!

    Oof someone accidentally scanned their clipper card while boarding at Civic Center Station 😂 must’ve been a long day lol

    • @Fognrailz
      @Fognrailz 3 года назад

      Not really lol, unless they’re 90 min pass (90 min at the time) expired right as the train came

    • @TohaBgood2
      @TohaBgood2 Год назад +1

      @@Fognrailz He's implying that people don't pay for Muni. That's not exactly true. The vast majority of riders pay, but there is a larger than usual and growing group of riders who don't pay. It's nothing like, say, France where people don't pay on principle unless there's a transit cop literally watching them, but it is a bit unusual for the US.
      It's definitely an issue that Muni and BART need to deal with. Caltrain and other systems use fare inspectors and don't really have this problem. As a byproduct, due to the constant presence of fare inspectors on their trains, they also don't have the same safety issues that Muni and BART have. They know how to solve the problem, but there just isn't enough pressure from riders to do so yet.

    I miss the horizontal seating

    • @TohaBgood2
      @TohaBgood2 Год назад +1

      The "horizontal seating" arrangement (transverse) is horrible for a busy transit system. It's much harder for people to get out of the seat. It's bad for safety too. Riders can get trapped with a crazy person in the isle seat. I have female friends who were sexually assaulted by crazy unhoused people this way.
      Just because you're used to something doesn't mean that it's a good idea. There are very good reasons why pretty much all the transit systems all around the world have now moved to longitudinal seating. It's just better.
