Mai is so dedicated to decluttering, she decluttered her ex😂 Seriously though, I admire how you are handling all of this. My parents split right before I started high school, and I have so much respect for single parents. It’s hard work. I wish my parents asked me and my brothers what we wanted when it came to the schedule. My advice would be to ask your sons what they want when it comes to holidays and the schedule (as long as they are old enough to understand the situation). I personally felt far more comfortable at my mom’s (the step-mom hated me at my dad’s) and I wish my dad would have let me go to my mom’s more instead of forcing me to be at his home. It built a lot of resentment and was too confining.

FWIW I've always admired how you don't sell your kids or (ex-)husband, and I now admire how you still won't sell them or your divorce details. Your channel provides a lot of value without depending on those who can't consent to have their privacy broadcast, and it's a reason I'm a fan. May the best happen to you all.

I've heard the advice before that its good to refer to your ex as "my kids dad" or "their dad" when talking to other people because it helps train your mind to be looking at the situation from that perspective. Not focusing on the failed relationship but rather what his rule still is.

It does give people the idea you're still together tho and you usually have to clarify your not together to new people. So ex makes it easier sometimes.

Best thing my parents ever did was divorce when i was a kid. My parents get along so well being divorced they live across the street from eachother haha. We had two happy households to call home and now at 30 I have the best relationship with both my mom and dad. Some people are just meant to be great co-parents. ❤️

Couples therapist here! Sometimes going to couples therapy highlights what is going wrong and that it isn’t fixable for whatever reason which I don’t think couples go in expecting. I try to caution couples about how the outcome of couples therapy might not be what they initially intended 😬

As a child of divorce I think how you’re handling this so far and the way you speak about your ex is really positive. Remembering that your kids happiness is number one and being civil to each other makes the whole situation better. Also the friendly reminder, no child ever wants to see/hear you disparage the other parent so hold those feelings back in front of them. If possible. ❤

I had a lot of deep rooted trauma show up in my 20’s literally thinking “I’m fine & healed now” got married in my early 20’s & I find myself almost repeating whatever I saw in my parents relationship. I’m technically an adult child of divorce as my parents didn’t divorce until I was 20. But it was so traumatic the way the pitted us against each other, still do 10 years later. I don’t care that they aren’t together, I just don’t want to be in the middle of their drama anymore. You’ve been so intentional of being positive about your ex and I really respect you for it.

As someone who did marry the boy she has been with since she was 14 I can say its not been easy. People have this misconception that we must have the perfect relationship since we have been together forever but its been hard. Neither of us are the same people we were 20 years ago and we have changed together and separately over the years. In the end I would absolutely do it again but I won't pretend its been smooth sailing the whole time.

Mai you are so friggen awesome! I am a child who grew up with parents who divorced very amicably. So much so that my dad who moved out, still came over for major holidays (Christmas and thanksgiving) and even would go out for friend dates with my mom. As I grew older my mom told me my dad wasn't a good husband (won't share the details but it was pretty bad) and I'm so thankful she put up with some of her resentment just so that we got to have our dad at all the holidays and we weren't being forced to "pick which parent" to spend with. Seriously would love to see you include some videos what you do when your kid free! I mean this is the first time you've been single in 17 years! 😍🥰😃

I broke up with my sons dad when i was 6 months pregnant. We hadn’t been together long and we didn’t get married but it was still hard and a lot of high emotions. It really sucked but after years of quietly fighting mostly because of his ex (gf/wife he got after us) since shes been gone for this past year we get along great. She caused a lot of extra drama and that relationship really humbled him and now hes nice to me. My son is 7 now and all he knows is two homes and we talk up how lucky he is he gets two bedrooms two families two birthdays two Christmas’ and two happy parents. My son only knows this as normal and it doesn’t feel like a broken home because we co parent so healthy. If you are seeing the red flags now run and run fast. The big question i asked myself was “if i wasn’t pregnant would i stay?” And the answer was a huge hell no so i left it wasn’t worth the toxic environment i was in. Find family or friends to help you so you have support but don’t lie down and try and make it work if you arnt happy 💕

I’m sure it’s hard to read that but I really mean it. You deserve to be happy and so does your ex and your children. They won’t understand it now but you are right, in 20 years they will thank you. Therapy is soooooooo worth it. Do it do it do it! You can also see an intern type therapist and they are less expensive. Also if you have insurance usually therapy is covered. I’m Canadian so I know it’s different but mine is covered at 80% through work.

So I don’t have experience with divorce but just a encouraging thought about holidays…..the holiday isn’t the date it falls on but when you are together with your boys. I had hard holidays during and after college when my sisters got married and started doing every other holiday every other year with our family. It was just my parents and me for many which felt very sad/lonely. I learned to enjoy the actual day if alone and enjoy extra when we were together. I think this all helped me last year with my boys when we last minute celebrated Christmas on Xmas eve bc we knew my husband would be plowing bc of a storm on Xmas day.
You’re handling it all well! Keep that smile on your face😁

It’s so important to remember things like the Japanese internment camps so I think speaking about it on a non history channel is fantastic so that not only people who specifically are searching for it hear about it. If you feel up to it, maybe you could share a bit more about it, maybe with your mother if she would like to partake or showing some mementos of your grandparents? Though it is of course also understandable if you prefer not to.

In my experience a good therapist helps a lot because he/she asks you the right questions so that you can understand your own feelings/reactions better and see the situation from an outside perspective. Good friends are awesome but they can only help to a certain extent.

The healthiest adult relationship I saw as a kid was between my mom and dad, even though they split up when I was a baby. Like I had no memory of them together, but I only had good experiences of us being a unit when we were all together. That said, my mom later married and had my younger half sister, and for a variety of reasons decided to stay in that relationship "for the kids" even though it was a toxic situation that was actively causing pain for everyone involved. It was a pretty extreme comparison, but I think it's better for kids to see parents working together and cooperating, even if it means being apart from each other. I think the happier you and your ex-husband are, the better it will be for your kids and I am sure they will grow up and be grateful for you guys prioritizing happiness over forcing something that doesn't work.

But I KNEW I wouldn't want that for myself. And I agree, it's not right for everyone. You two have been together for a very, very long time. You know what's best for your relationship and your family.
Best of luck to you, and also I'm so getting those boots from Target!!!

They need both of you regardless of the reasons for the divorce. They will Thank you one day for your strength and boldness in being the mother that they needed to be all those years.

Since you own your home, do you have future plans of renovating since you have only your stuff and the kiddos? Have you thought of renovating their rooms to be themed or anything? I love your videos so I watch them first, always. I own a home now and we have painted each room so far with its own theme. It just had me wondering because if you do, I'd love to watch the videos of the process!

My parents are divorced and I have an awesome relationship with them (I'm 20 now and they divorced when I was 8) they weren't perfect but it was better for me that they did. As far as holidays went we just sort of had 2 of both. For example I always spent Christmas Eve and morning with my mother and either Christmas evening or the day after with my dad side. I'm not sure how far your family is away from each other but having "2" Christmases wasn't a bad thing. Maybe when your kids get older they can be a part of the discussion too, I know it will be difficult at first but when they start having opinions about that sort of thing maybe it'll make even more special for you and baby daddy lol. Each having your own special traditions y'know 💖💖

Love your videos and your positivity. I was wondering if you would be willing to discuss more about the 50/50 custody, how does that look? It is literally like you take them to school when week and then your ex? Or is it more weekend and holiday based? Also I’m not sure if it’s different in the states but in the uk if there is a divorce it normally leads to the family home being sold etc? Is this a path you are having to take or will you be staying where you are?
