I like this presenter - he knows his stuff, and delivers naturally, without cliche motoring journalist jokes. Too many others are just trying to be Matt Watson (Carwow) - and failing. This is a breakthrough car imo... maybe just in time for MG.
Can't agree, sorry... This sort of EV - while welcome as a non fossil fuel car - has no future. It's already redundant technologically. I give it 3 - 4 years before it is canned.
@@MarthaMansbridge While this car has some superficial "attractions", nothing about it is new or innovative. It's EV, yes, but for a £20-£25k price tag, you can be sure the technology is rudimentary. Furthermore, it has no capacity for advanced driver assistance, and definitely no capacity for self-driving. Like it or not, self-driving is around the corner, and when it happens, cars like this instantly become redundant. Serious car makers - VW, Daimler and even Ford and GM - (possibly even Toyota and the Hyundai family) are focusing on autonomy. The field is currently led by Tesla, but that does not mean others won't catch up. They know that if they do not develop Level-5 capable FSD technology, they will be out of business by 2028-2030 (if not sooner). Just because a car is EV, does not mean it is "of the new breed". It's great that MG is making a "cheap" EV - but that is all it is... Within a few years, there will be fully FSD cars available for between £25k and £30k - with features that are FAR superior to what this MG offers. It is redundant... and people who buy it will probably not even be able to trade it in in a couple of years. There will be no market for it - new or used.
I have the petrol version of this car and it’s great! Cheap to buy and run and reliably gets me where I want to go..... what more do you need for a car! The only issue with an EV version is the price. I, and no doubt every other ZS owner, was attracted by the low price of the petrol version. I’m not about to spend another £8k to get this one
@@LA.Guitar I wouldn't buy it either - nor its petrol "cousin".(I have a 2002 MGTF sports car - a couple of years later the brand was sold to the Chinese, so I love MG. My little car is fantastic). Anyway... this car will depreciate to zero in around 5-6 years, because it is little more than an ICE car - except with a battery and electric motor. Great that it is EV, and if people prefer to get the EV version rather than the petrol one, that's a good thing. BUT... they will lose value. In a few years' time, other cars (likely to be EV) will be cheaper than this one is now, and have more advanced technology - possibly self-driving capability which is where cars will hold their value. Any car (EV or otherwise) not capable of FSD will be redundant.
This car actually makes sense. An EV doesnt need to do 0-60 in sub 4 seconds and it has enough range for town driving and short commutes well done to MG i say.

Great video. Just driven this car with my wife ( she drove it too) on city roads. We are both impressed. Very smooth. Amazing for the price. Minors I noticed you can not pull the steering wheel frontwards ( up & down you can) but you can move your seat & degree of that seat. I am quite a tall person ( 185 cm). The steering wheel position felt good enough with these adjustments. Drives very smooth in the city. A lot of space inside & the boot was truelly impressive compared to our vw golf M6. Suprising for the size of the car. Plenty of head & knee space too. Wish I had tested it on the highway. The only thing that really bothered me was the real range (140 -165) & that there is no auto update system like Tesla & VW ID3. This could have improved the range slightly over time (software) together with other updates of the software like new roads & closest charging stations,.... Felt & looked modern ( not outdated ). DO NOT MOCK THIS CAR UNTILL YOU HAVE DRIVEN IT. Was worried about MG's quality but the chinese take over seems to have a great effect on this car & maybe the brand. The quality did not feel cheap at all for this price. It is not an audi ofc, different price class. Very glad I drove it.
SAIC the parent company of MG builds VW and Audi cars in China so it's not unsurprising that some influence has carried over to their own models. The battery is not under the rear seats, it's under the floor and the boot has a two stage floor which on the upper setting gives a flat loadspace with no hump.
Buying a MG supports the Communist Party of China. People that care about their own economy buy products from people/companies/brands that are designed and/or developed and/or researched in their own country or ally country. The people that work for those local companies, in free democracies, then buy other products developed in their own country or ally country and that keeps their families and friends in work and making money. Stupid people buy direct from Chinese brands and send every single penny out of their country and destroy their own economy and eventually their entire free society because they are cretins and/or greedy and/or want things they can't afford, and rather than wait and save. They are happy to screw over their entire economy in the pursuit of self-gratification, selfishness, and ego. Buying CCP owned brands and products fuels Chinese R&D and weakens free economies. Your children and your children's children will suffer as a result of your choices. This is not hyperbole, it is fact.

I bet the MG is probably better built than the Tesla. The California company really dropped the ball in QC & reliability, vs. SAIC which is one of China's largest automakers and the consistent top performer of domestic EV sales in China.
I just bought one brand new, £19450! No car tax, cheap insurance, no petrol - charge for free at our local supper market and park for free right outside. We live in a new house and all new homes with a drive are fitted with a charger, low service costs- no oil changes, Manchester has a scheme pay £20 per year and park for 2 hours and charge for free. The cars super quick and very quite. 7 year warranty
Comparatively in the market yes. Objectively in the wider spectrum of whats available, no. That said I see potential with this model if additional features are brought out in future generations. With price stability and competitiveness, MG have a very decent future ahead of them.

I own an mgtf. when Tata from India owns jaguar and Land Rover. Nobody says anything about them not being British, but MG was bought by SAIC as a salvage from bankruptcy. after Ford sold off Jag to Tata, they sold MG Rover to SAIC, while sold its inventories and equipments, and blueprints separately. I followed up with the take over report over ten years ago. After rebuilding effort of ten years or more, finally they are able to produce decent cars, still using English designers and the base in Long bridge. I hope MG's brand survival and rebuilding is an worthy undertaking as we witness now.
The difference is Jaguar Land Rover continued to manufacture their cars in the UK when they were taken over by Tata, so it was just a change of ownership. If Tata had moved production to India and kept some of the design work in the UK I think people would be saying the same they are with MG. MG cars are manufactured in China and this is a deal-breaker for me (and I'm not the only one). If MG open up a factory in the UK I reckon they will become really popular again.
Had mine a week - great price point got a good deal (20.5k British pounds for the Exclusive) + a good trade in for my Ionic hybrid. looking forward to ordering my home charger :-)
I had one as a courtesy car and I loved. It's so quick from a standstill which makes it a lot of fun! The level 2 autonomous tech is very basic and unrefined, but the fact it's included as standard at this price is superb.
MG has been in need of a good car since the Chinese acquired the brand. Perhaps this model is the one and is the start of lots of good cars in the future...
After two test drives, I’ve put my order in, im happy with the range it suits my current driving activity, next year when it arrives I’ll try a long trip or two just to get its measure. Will be taking out the service plan too so costs are covered for 5 years.
The ZS EV is an honest down to earth practical family electric car. If the range is sufficient (and for many it is) then it offers loads of interior space, a big boot and loads of equipment. And despite lazy assumptions and smug beliefs about Chinese cars the interior is very good and feels much nicer than quite a few cars from Euro rivals. I found the driving dynamics to be fine and initial acceleration very strong. For the price this is a terrific car. And in one way I actually prefer this to the Tesla 3, it still has an instrument cluster and some physical buttons. Only thing I would suggest they improve is the rather lackluster audio system.
Thanks for your review - the price of this model is so good that I've changed my 5 year EV plan, and have ordered one of these so I can get in on the EV development. Yes it's a shame that the range couldn't be higher, but I want the benefits of free road tax and much cheaper running costs. I suspect that when it's time for me to replace it in 4 years time, the government will have removed purchase subsidies, road tax will probably be charged on EVs and I bet electric prices will have increased. When EVs are adopted by the masses, I doubt the incentives will be there.
Problem is the masses wont adopt it when the budget brand is selling them for 30k. I cant afford to pay 30k for a car so will continue to buy ex demo cars at 12-15k... I only do 8000 miles a year and swap cars every 4 years.... i would never be able to recoup the extra 15k.
@craig mitchell pillred probably. But they can't put them up soo much that they price themselves sout of the market (panels). Fuel prices can rise to whatever and no one has any other choice because you can't harvest fuel for yourself.
Steve Jones . Expect to pay road user charges soon. We pay the equivalent of £40 per 1000 kilometres so we can safely assume that drivers in the UK will pay at least that plus annual license fee. Still be cheaper than burning hydrocarbons but only just. Still it’ll give everyone a warm glow while driving so there’s that.

Significant benefit as compared with a Nissan Leaf is the MG battery is water cooled. So even though range is similar, repeated rapid charging on longer journeys should be no problem.
I usually don’t like writing reviews other than like and/or Subscribe if I like the review to be fair) but as I started watching the review from this dude for the first time I got hooked. Honestly, I was going to stop and move on to the next review but couldn’t. Really like how he explains with so much clarity. Like another person said, he doesn’t do all the hanky panky stuff like other presenters do. so cheesy and not my cup of tea, yes, little joke here and there is good, but they get too carried away and too often. hate it, but thank you to this guy. Not that unemployment seems to be too bad in UK. my daughter has left a few jobs over the last 15 years for different reasons, mostly like moving from Brighton to London or when she felt that she was being taken for granted and not been out of work for more than a few days.

@@methoxy66 I agree, I think it's a fantastic car. I reckon its the perfect 'second' car, to do all the daily driving in (which is most of my yearly ks). Keeping the petrol outback parked up for rare long trips/camping. An unexpected bonus I have discovered is that my solar excess generation is ample to charge the vehicle..... So petrol expense has literally disappeared from weekly budget!
I doubt the average buyer cares how derivative the car is! I think they care if it is a good car that they can rely on to do what they expect it to do. I think they care about range, driveability, comfort and quality. Above-all, I think they care about value for money. Whie the range is a bit last year, the price reflects that. Within a few years it is likely we will see cars like this with double the range for less than 20,000 pounds. Only problem is infrastructure, which really needs to be leagues better, particularly if you expect the majority who don't have off-street parking to buy an electric car and therefore for whom home charging is not an option. Problem with the government's targets is the thinking comes from a perspective that is far too middle-class.
60 percent of homes have off street parking. Most of those homes have more than one car. Of the remaining homes without off street parking, many do not own a car, as they are flats or terraced houses in town centres where people make use of adequate public transport systems not available in many more rural places. Many flats have allocated parking spaces in car parks above or below ground, all of which could be fitted with slow charging points.It pans out to about 15% of car owners who don't have some form of off street parking. Some on-street charging (lampposts & charging posts) and workplace car park charging can account for many of those. If it doesn't work out for you, then you will need a longer range car & to rapid charge occasionally (which is getting much faster). Where there's a will, there's a way!
@@inkpen1999 Relevant phrase is "could be fitted with charging points" ............ currently they're not and there doesn't seem to a general agreement on who/how/when there will be a scheme to expand charging facilities. Having driven Renault/Nissan/BMW/Jaguar products it can be a nightmare on a long journey.
@@UKMike2009 Well there wouldn't be much point fitting everywhere with a charge point while EVs are only 2% of cars on the road and you can't buy new one if you wanted to. It will all change over the next 5 years.

A high proportion of people who live in houses with off street parking own cars, with such households frequently owning 2 or more cars. Your village excluded, of course.
We’ve had ours for a year, done 10,000 happy miles with no problems. The build quality is absolutely fine. I would prefer to buy British but I don’t know of a rikishi electric car. We did test drive the Tata (Jaguar) I-Pace, which is made in UK, but it’s 3 times the price and not 3 times better.
Its good value, enough milage per charge that most people need and looks are good, excellent warranty etc , my only gripe would be that MG should give the customer 2 battery sizes like the two petrol sizes so if ypu want more range then you can opt for a 90 or 100kw battery model
MG is a very iconic badge, if only they ditched the name Rover and kept to MG, which in my mind looked a lot more modern, then perhaps the UKs perspective on their image would have got away from the flat cap tweed wearing image that a lot of folk had, and maybe would have had a better chance of surviving.
MG as you probably knew it isn't around anymore. Totally different vehicles made and owned in a different country. The present MG shares only the badge with the old cars, and nothing else. Rightly or wrongly, thats how it now is.
If you insist on jumping on the electric bandwagon quickly I can't see what's bad about this car. It's alright in and out does the job fine and I don't think there is any competition at that price, the new 208 ev starts at around £24k I think
Really interesting car. Expect it to be a fair bit pricier in the Netherlands. Our government unfortunately is ripping of motorists. Will be over €30.000 over here. Still a bargain compared to other ev’s, because most of them are above 35k.
Well think twice about having any software updates, in our case they introduced a bug into the battery management system, that was in november 2020, now April 2021, car has been in dealership for 2 months and problem still not sorted, loss of power, loss of range and still not fit for purpose. Before you buy, ask if you don't have software updates are you still covered by warranty?
This guy is alright. He sounds the spit of Matt Prior but with less dithering and muttering and stuttering. Straight to the point. Don't know about the Audi's being best in interior quality though
Since I live in US desert South-West with ambient summer temps around 115F (or higher) for several months a year, my biggest concern is battery cooling system and battery life expectency in my extreme environment. Unfortunately, this rarely is addressed - even not mentioning if batteries are air or water cooled. As the world gets hotter, more people will have the same issues.
I think it's a great car. If it gets people into EVs then that's great. I love my leaf 40 kWh tekna. But if I was looking again this would be on my radar.
@@MOSSFEEN Not sure if you actually have a car, but chances are the LEAF would beat your car away from the lights anyway... Certainly the 64kWh battery version - you'd have to be driving something with at least 6 cylinders or a pretty big turbo to stand a chance!
I absolutely love my ZS EV. I've driven it since December and despite lockdown and working from home the car has saved me £600 in diesel. Without lockdown it would have been £1200 saved so far. So it saves me money. Will eventually pay for itself. It's relaxing and comfortable to drive. Very nippy when you want it. And it's a great talking point with people when they see that it's electric. There are some downsides for me though. I'd like to turn off the bong chime. It's vastly overkill. And I would have e the option for 19" wheels if MG had it, but they don't offer wheel options. I still think the wheels look too small in the arches. Overall I'm very happy with the car though. Cheap motoring with a few frills
Last MG I had was a ZT260. Mustang 4.6 V8 - boy that was fun, but how times change, eh? I have had one of these from the MG dealer over the weekend and it's really good. So....order being placed tomorrow. I currently use my Rover 75 V8 for the commute, so this will save c£2k/year in fuel, plus free road tax etc.
A freaking bargain. People complaining about not being a Tesla Model 3 are delusional. You could only dream of getting a car like this years ago for that amount of money.
50% the price of the T3 entry level (once specced for paint delivery etc).. T3 is a very inspiring car this one is just down right practical.... though the wait times aren't quite as good as made out... factor in 3-6 months for delivery...
Very useful review and MG have bided their time and I think they may just come in and take a decent slice of the market. Well done MG, this looks to be a very decent starting point for the next era of motoring
Great presentation and lots of information. It would also be helpful to compare the warranties provided by each manufacturer in regard to replacement of parts, batteries, etc, because I think these will be different from each manufacturer. And also the support provided by local dealers in the UK who will manage the sales and maintenance afterwards.
I've had one of these on long-term rental for about 6 months. In general it's great, but the brakes are really grabby. Anything less than full concentration on brake pedal control results in a jolt into the seat-belts or a near-rear-end of the car in front. But, overall still a good deal at the price.
It's getting interesting price wise but the range is just a bit limited. Commute 86 miles a day and definitely want 2 days run time out of a car between charges in a ideal world. Kudos to MG though great value if you only use for smaller distances. Next 2 years or so should be very interesting.
It is certainly a better car than I thought it would be. But I don’t think the MG won’t have it all it’s own way, the e Niro for example has a better battery / range although the MG is significantly cheaper. Well done Chinese MG.
It is very very fast. I mean very very fast.. Very nicely very quick..it pulls like a train from zero to 60. Ran out of road and speed limit to see how it went over 60. Bum punched into,the seat. I think it might give my 600cc motorcycle a bit of a run for the money. It drives amazingly well. Drove one put my for down and it it was ‘Muck Fe’ light the blue touch paper and retreat to safe distance.. He makes it sound like is not very fast. It is a pocket rocket! If I wanted a car (I do not, happy with my motorcycle), had the money, and somewhere to charge it it’s a no brainier, I would get one.
"Established" car reviewers do not yet know that the features which are really important in modern EV's have little to do with cosmetics, boot capacity, adjustability of steering wheels, the design of the air vent.... and everything to do with the electronics, drive-train technology, and (perhaps most important) computer and software systems. Here we have a review that completely ignores what the public really needs to know when an EV is being assessed. I am FAR MORE INTERESTED IN: 1. What type of electric motor is used? (There are fundamentally three types - Tesla now has a new type, not used in any other car). A critical question as it relates to performance, energy efficiency, and reliability. 2. Battery configuration, and (if possible) underlying cell chemistry - along with thermal management system (VERY important, considering how ambient temperature affects range and performance and charging rates). 3. Computer system - particularly all the driver-assist features, and how the computer (and the software) stack up against competitors - using Tesla as the industry benchmark... One has to, I'm afraid... Tesla is not just reshaping the car itself, but the very reasons why and how we use them. It's clear that at this price point, this MG is MUCH closer to being a golf-cart than it is a Tesla Model 3, and any comparison would be unfair... but I'd like to see these reviewers start to compare the important stuff. Reason they don't of course, is that they don't know anything about it. Ask this guy to explain the benefits of a 3-phase 6-pole permanent magnet reduction motor, and you might as well be asking him to tell you how a MRI scanner functions. Until the CAR REVIEWERS start to learn and understand what is really important when discussing modern EV's, their reviews are pointless.
Well actually the 'standard' stuff on usability, driving position etc is needed for any car review. The battery cell chemistry would mean nothing to 90% buying this car, and the reviewer had no opportunity to test the driver assist features, so did not speculate on them.

That is ridiculous. First of all, that information is available in the web and in car teardowns videos for most EVs-not a car driving review video. Second, what car reviewer cares about the technical points you brought up because it doesn't matter for the driving experience. The only technical aspect that might matter is whether the battery has a liquid thermal management system and a long battery warranty. Everything else it pointless from the perspective of the driver. It's not like an SRM has a different torque curve than an inductive motor or a different sound! Battery chemistries?! There are only 2 chemistries in use right now anyway NCA and NMC and it doesn't matter one bit to a driver. You are a dinosaur still thinking in ICE terms when it mattered whether a car had a V6 or V8 or ran on petrol or diesel.
@@niffrig Like most people, you can't see the wood for the trees. Fact One: We are entering the most radical shift in transportation in a century. Not only are cars about to be powered by a new technology (historically alien to car production, from when the ICE became the economic choice), but even more significant is HOW cars are going to be used. Like it or not, cars of the not-too-distant future will be self-driving. And this is not "Tesla Fanboy Speak". ALL serious car makers know this is the future, and all serious car makers are seriously investing in it - in various iterations - hoping that their strategy is both correct, and facilitates their future viability. Across the automotive industry, R&D in fossil-fuel engine technology has all but ceased. No automotive manufacturer is now going to put billions into a new design of petrol or diesel engine. The money (increasing quantities of it) are being invested in electronics, batteries and drivetrains, how this dovetails with computers and software, and how all this will hang together when cars become fully autonomous. People who "review" cars do so with the aim of helping people make informed choices. In fact, most consumers trust such reviewers. Many people (as evidenced from comments even on this review) have indicated that "yes... looks OK for an EV... will definitely consider it, based on what you've said..." But this is no longer about "car vs car". As I said at the top of this comment, we are entering a radical transformation of not just what cars ARE, but how they will be USED. Most people may not even need to buy a car any more. What most people want is cheap, efficient, safe and convenient TRANSPORT. When this can be provided by a vehicle that drives itself, it no longer makes any sense for people to take on what has up to now been a LIABILITY (a car is not an asset) that costs a fortune to buy, to own, to maintain and to operate. For people who own a car that has FSD capability, they potentially have a very lucrative asset (an Uber without a human driver). Never before (in history) has a vehicle had the potential of becoming an asset when its owner or any other person is not in it physically operating it. But most people will not even need to OWN the car... they will just use it when it's needed - times that they need to travel from A to B. SO... if you are in the market for a car (a new one), then in a couple of years from now, it is not only functionally useless (you can get the same "service" from a robotaxi for a fraction of the expense), but there is no market for your (now used) car, or any need to buy the same redundant tech in a "new model". Nobody is going to buy your used car, because doing so is plain stupid in an era where you can get from A to B just as easily and FAR more cheaply by NOT owning the car. This MG may be a "cheaper" EV - but given what is happening in the whole concept of motoring, buying one is stupid. It is redundant, and in its current iteration, has NO capacity to become useful in a world of FSD. It starts as a liability, and from there it remains so. Because people "trust" what these reviewers say, to listen to their "advice" is actually going to be a very expensive mistake. I love cars - even ICE cars, and there are a lot of EV's that are really nice (including, in its plain rudimentary way, this MG) - but to buy a car that is incapable of factoring in the future is plain stupid.
The MG has vw switchgear as mg is part of SAIC and SAIC and Volkswagen have a joint venture so SAIC were able to take some parts from the volkswagen group and put it in the ZS
Curious - the entertainment system shows Android Auto - the current ZS (Which I'm taking delivery of in a couple days) only offers Apple - What Car? Do you know if this will be part of a firmware upgrade offered to customers of the other models? Seems to be a strange omission especially given the keen pricing of the car - Android traditionally is the phone of choice by people not willing to pay the 'Apple tax' :-)
My very first car was an MG midget {harvest Gold was the color} back in 1975. I paid cash for it ... $4500 I think ... and drove it off the showroom. I had no idea they’re still around.
After owning the MG ZS EV for 2 years it has been one of the best decisions made. Very cheap to run @ 1.5p/mile using home charging. Very comfortable to be in with a great seating position (yes it's an SUV style vehicle.. but it's taller not longer.. and for those of us with real back issues a more upright seating position is the best way to travel!) Nothing fell off it. In fact it's been the least trouble free car I have owned. Do not listen to those that day all things made in China are low quality! The new BMW EV, the Tesla Model Y, iPhones... All made in China! All to a very very high standard! No rust Excellent service from the local MG garage (who also sell Renault and Dacia). One issue I had was a bad door seal that caused a leak. Thus was quickly rectified by the dealer with no further issues. The autopilot, blind spot warning etc has been great. Efficiency has been very good. And the acceleration is very surprising.. especially in sports mode. Instant power with no lag. I am struggling to find any real world negotiate. Running costs have literally saved us £1000s Vs an ice car as there is no expensive service costs and no road tax ( sure, that might change in the future but I can only operate in the hear and now). The MG was funded, in part, by the EST interest free loan, so it was a no brainer really. The loan payment per month was around half of the cost that petrol would have been!.. We are just changing to a newer EV and the depreciation on the MG has been amazing.. amazingly low.. all in it has been the least depreciation in any car that I have owned. If there is a downside it has seen the UK charge infrastructure. Local journeys are simply a breeze. However venture further afield and you need to do a bit of planning by using the likes of ZapMap etc.. there is nothing more annoying than getting to a charger and finding it broken or there being a queue for it. This is NOT a reflection on the MG. If all I did was local journeys it would not be getting traded in. Love or lothe EVs they are the future.
I do not think this should be compared to Tesla Model Y, for the simple reason that the MG ZS EV is a car that will be available a year before the first Tesla Model Y is planned to be delivered to its first costumers. There is also a significant price difference, with the Model Y pricing being higher than that of the Model 3 and thus significantly higher than the MG ZS EV. A comparable EV is the Hyundai Kona EV 39 kWh, which might have a smaller battery but also have a better efficiency that makes its range a little better. It will be interesting to see what the launch of the MG ZS EV will do to the pricing of this EV, a car that has often been criticised for costing to much when compared to the 64 kWh version that isn't that much more expensive. Will Hyundai meet the competition or let MG and MINI have the cheap EV market for themselves? - If they cost the same the Hyundai would be my choice, but if the difference is a couple of thousand pounds there could be a reason to go MG.

What's the warranty? My Chrysler Pacifica hybrid comes with 160,000km and 10 years on the power train... Double in less harsh climates. If you have to swap a battery, is it worth it? Plus, I shall mention tires and brakes changed more fequently because of the added weight of the battery. I would like one imported to Canada as we are Brits like you too, we just got lost on a different continent (don't the Chinese know that)?
7 year warranty. Brakes tend to last alot longer on electric cars due to regen braking typically 3 times longer. As for tyres they also last the same amount of time because the way electric cars deliver the power to the wheels.
Agreed, breaks last a lot longer, many cars have original disks and pads at 100k, As people get used to using regen for slowing down you actually eliminate much of the wear (longer light presses on the pedal)
Yes this car is a bargain, but there is growing awareness in the large community who have ordered and don’t have a delivery date that SAIC won’t be able to deliver.
NCAP was done on petrol version without efeatures like lka, adaptive cruise assist , blind spot detection, reversing camera etc so we all suspect its NCAP 4* vs petrol 3* .. however the electric version hasn't been put forward for tests so like a lot of it... its a bit of a punt ... but given the price of the car.
My son has the petrol version and its a good car. As a test bed for a EV its a good start and as tech gets better the cars will,but at what cost? How much natural resources are needed to make the batteries. However how much does it cost to charge ! No one ever mentions this ?

As this is just the start of electric cars I'm sure tech will get better.electric lorries HGV bringing food in the cost to charge them has got to be Passed on the batteries in those things just ain't viable they just don't have the range. Cars towing caravans same again not enough range.there just to expensive electric cars for the average guy on the street who can just afford to keep a job and home going with today's cars.with the electric bills going to get higher more expence going out less food coming in.its a hard balancing act .
I like this presenter - he knows his stuff, and delivers naturally, without cliche motoring journalist jokes. Too many others are just trying to be Matt Watson (Carwow) - and failing. This is a breakthrough car imo... maybe just in time for MG.

@@MarthaMansbridge While this car has some superficial "attractions", nothing about it is new or innovative. It's EV, yes, but for a £20-£25k price tag, you can be sure the technology is rudimentary. Furthermore, it has no capacity for advanced driver assistance, and definitely no capacity for self-driving. Like it or not, self-driving is around the corner, and when it happens, cars like this instantly become redundant. Serious car makers - VW, Daimler and even Ford and GM - (possibly even Toyota and the Hyundai family) are focusing on autonomy. The field is currently led by Tesla, but that does not mean others won't catch up. They know that if they do not develop Level-5 capable FSD technology, they will be out of business by 2028-2030 (if not sooner). Just because a car is EV, does not mean it is "of the new breed". It's great that MG is making a "cheap" EV - but that is all it is... Within a few years, there will be fully FSD cars available for between £25k and £30k - with features that are FAR superior to what this MG offers. It is redundant... and people who buy it will probably not even be able to trade it in in a couple of years. There will be no market for it - new or used.
I have the petrol version of this car and it’s great! Cheap to buy and run and reliably gets me where I want to go..... what more do you need for a car! The only issue with an EV version is the price. I, and no doubt every other ZS owner, was attracted by the low price of the petrol version. I’m not about to spend another £8k to get this one
@@LA.Guitar I wouldn't buy it either - nor its petrol "cousin".(I have a 2002 MGTF sports car - a couple of years later the brand was sold to the Chinese, so I love MG. My little car is fantastic). Anyway... this car will depreciate to zero in around 5-6 years, because it is little more than an ICE car - except with a battery and electric motor. Great that it is EV, and if people prefer to get the EV version rather than the petrol one, that's a good thing. BUT... they will lose value. In a few years' time, other cars (likely to be EV) will be cheaper than this one is now, and have more advanced technology - possibly self-driving capability which is where cars will hold their value. Any car (EV or otherwise) not capable of FSD will be redundant.
This car actually makes sense. An EV doesnt need to do 0-60 in sub 4 seconds and it has enough range for town driving and short commutes well done to MG i say.
Test driven one today - holy fuck is it quick acceleration! Feel a lot more than 140bhp

Great video. Just driven this car with my wife ( she drove it too) on city roads. We are both impressed. Very smooth. Amazing for the price. Minors I noticed you can not pull the steering wheel frontwards ( up & down you can) but you can move your seat & degree of that seat. I am quite a tall person ( 185 cm). The steering wheel position felt good enough with these adjustments. Drives very smooth in the city. A lot of space inside & the boot was truelly impressive compared to our vw golf M6. Suprising for the size of the car. Plenty of head & knee space too. Wish I had tested it on the highway. The only thing that really bothered me was the real range (140 -165) & that there is no auto update system like Tesla & VW ID3. This could have improved the range slightly over time (software) together with other updates of the software like new roads & closest charging stations,.... Felt & looked modern ( not outdated ). DO NOT MOCK THIS CAR UNTILL YOU HAVE DRIVEN IT. Was worried about MG's quality but the chinese take over seems to have a great effect on this car & maybe the brand. The quality did not feel cheap at all for this price. It is not an audi ofc, different price class. Very glad I drove it.
SAIC the parent company of MG builds VW and Audi cars in China so it's not unsurprising that some influence has carried over to their own models.
The battery is not under the rear seats, it's under the floor and the boot has a two stage floor which on the upper setting gives a flat loadspace with no hump.
Buying a MG supports the Communist Party of China. People that care about their own economy buy products from people/companies/brands that are designed and/or developed and/or researched in their own country or ally country. The people that work for those local companies, in free democracies, then buy other products developed in their own country or ally country and that keeps their families and friends in work and making money. Stupid people buy direct from Chinese brands and send every single penny out of their country and destroy their own economy and eventually their entire free society because they are cretins and/or greedy and/or want things they can't afford, and rather than wait and save. I bet the MG is probably better built than the Tesla. The California company really dropped the ball in QC & reliability, vs. SAIC which is one of China's largest automakers and the consistent top performer of domestic EV sales in China.

I just bought one brand new, £19450! No car tax, cheap insurance, no petrol - charge for free at our local supper market and park for free right outside. We live in a new house and all new homes with a drive are fitted with a charger, low service costs- no oil changes, Manchester has a scheme pay £20 per year and park for 2 hours and charge for free. The cars super quick and very quite. 7 year warranty

I own an mgtf. when Tata from India owns jaguar and Land Rover. Nobody says anything about them not being British, but MG was bought by SAIC as a salvage from bankruptcy. after Ford sold off Jag to Tata, they sold MG Rover to SAIC, while sold its inventories and equipments, and blueprints separately. I followed up with the take over report over ten years ago. After rebuilding effort of ten years or more, finally they are able to produce decent cars, still using English designers and the base in Long bridge. I hope MG's brand survival and rebuilding is an worthy undertaking as we witness now.
The difference is Jaguar Land Rover continued to manufacture their cars in the UK when they were taken over by Tata, so it was just a change of ownership. If Tata had moved production to India and kept some of the design work in the UK I think people would be saying the same they are with MG. MG cars are manufactured in China and this is a deal-breaker for me (and I'm not the only one). If MG open up a factory in the UK I reckon they will become really popular again.
Had mine since Mid Dec- 2000 miles later this car has proved to be excellent on every level.

I had one as a courtesy car and I loved. It's so quick from a standstill which makes it a lot of fun! The level 2 autonomous tech is very basic and unrefined, but the fact it's included as standard at this price is superb.

After two test drives, I’ve put my order in, im happy with the range it suits my current driving activity, next year when it arrives I’ll try a long trip or two just to get its measure. Will be taking out the service plan too so costs are covered for 5 years.
@Gabriel Protti love it, I am aiming to go for the LR model about March time as I can use the greater range, but otherwise problem free.
The ZS EV is an honest down to earth practical family electric car. If the range is sufficient (and for many it is) then it offers loads of interior space, a big boot and loads of equipment. And despite lazy assumptions and smug beliefs about Chinese cars the interior is very good and feels much nicer than quite a few cars from Euro rivals. I found the driving dynamics to be fine and initial acceleration very strong. For the price this is a terrific car. And in one way I actually prefer this to the Tesla 3, it still has an instrument cluster and some physical buttons. Only thing I would suggest they improve is the rather lackluster audio system.
Thanks for your review - the price of this model is so good that I've changed my 5 year EV plan, and have ordered one of these so I can get in on the EV development. Yes it's a shame that the range couldn't be higher, but I want the benefits of free road tax and much cheaper running costs. I suspect that when it's time for me to replace it in 4 years time, the government will have removed purchase subsidies, road tax will probably be charged on EVs and I bet electric prices will have increased. When EVs are adopted by the masses, I doubt the incentives will be there.
Problem is the masses wont adopt it when the budget brand is selling them for 30k.
I cant afford to pay 30k for a car so will continue to buy ex demo cars at 12-15k...
I only do 8000 miles a year and swap cars every 4 years.... i would never be able to recoup the extra 15k.
@craig mitchell pillred probably. But they can't put them up soo much that they price themselves sout of the market (panels). Fuel prices can rise to whatever and no one has any other choice because you can't harvest fuel for yourself.
At least you have incentives. None in Australia, part of the reason few brands come here and it is very hard to find a BEV or even a PHEV.
Steve Jones . Expect to pay road user charges soon. We pay the equivalent of £40 per 1000 kilometres so we can safely assume that drivers in the UK will pay at least that plus annual license fee. Still be cheaper than burning hydrocarbons but only just. Still it’ll give everyone a warm glow while driving so there’s that.

Amazing for the money! Looks surprisingly smart too. MG could sell loads of these - especially when they add a longer range one with a bigger battery.
Significant benefit as compared with a Nissan Leaf is the MG battery is water cooled. So even though range is similar, repeated rapid charging on longer journeys should be no problem.

I doubt the average buyer cares how derivative the car is! I think they care if it is a good car that they can rely on to do what they expect it to do. I think they care about range, driveability, comfort and quality. Above-all, I think they care about value for money. Whie the range is a bit last year, the price reflects that. Within a few years it is likely we will see cars like this with double the range for less than 20,000 pounds. Only problem is infrastructure, which really needs to be leagues better, particularly if you expect the majority who don't have off-street parking to buy an electric car and therefore for whom home charging is not an option. Problem with the government's targets is the thinking comes from a perspective that is far too middle-class.
60 percent of homes have off street parking. Most of those homes have more than one car. Of the remaining homes without off street parking, many do not own a car, as they are flats or terraced houses in town centres where people make use of adequate public transport systems not available in many more rural places. Many flats have allocated parking spaces in car parks above or below ground, all of which could be fitted with slow charging points.It pans out to about 15% of car owners who don't have some form of off street parking. Some on-street charging (lampposts & charging posts) and workplace car park charging can account for many of those. If it doesn't work out for you, then you will need a longer range car & to rapid charge occasionally (which is getting much faster). Where there's a will, there's a way!
@@inkpen1999 Relevant phrase is "could be fitted with charging points" ............ currently they're not and there doesn't seem to a general agreement on who/how/when there will be a scheme to expand charging facilities. Having driven Renault/Nissan/BMW/Jaguar products it can be a nightmare on a long journey.

We’ve had ours for a year, done 10,000 happy miles with no problems. The build quality is absolutely fine. I would prefer to buy British but I don’t know of a rikishi electric car. We did test drive the Tata (Jaguar) I-Pace, which is made in UK, but it’s 3 times the price and not 3 times better.
Its good value, enough milage per charge that most people need and looks are good, excellent warranty etc , my only gripe would be that MG should give the customer 2 battery sizes like the two petrol sizes so if ypu want more range then you can opt for a 90 or 100kw battery model

MG is now owned by Chinese automotive giant SAIC Motor Corporation Limited since 2005.
MG is a very iconic badge, if only they ditched the name Rover and kept to MG, which in my mind looked a lot more modern, then perhaps the UKs perspective on their image would have got away from the flat cap tweed wearing image that a lot of folk had, and maybe would have had a better chance of surviving.
MG as you probably knew it isn't around anymore.
Totally different vehicles made and owned in a different country. The present MG shares only the badge with the old cars, and nothing else.

Really interesting car. Expect it to be a fair bit pricier in the Netherlands. Our government unfortunately is ripping of motorists. Will be over €30.000 over here. Still a bargain compared to other ev’s, because most of them are above 35k.

How about servicing?
Well think twice about having any software updates, in our case they introduced a bug into the battery management system, that was in november 2020, now April 2021, car has been in dealership for 2 months and problem still not sorted, loss of power, loss of range and still not fit for purpose. Before you buy, ask if you don't have software updates are you still covered by warranty?

This guy is alright. He sounds the spit of Matt Prior but with less dithering and muttering and stuttering. Straight to the point. Don't know about the Audi's being best in interior quality though
Since I live in US desert South-West with ambient summer temps around 115F (or higher) for several months a year, my biggest concern is battery cooling system and battery life expectency in my extreme environment. Unfortunately, this rarely is addressed - even not mentioning if batteries are air or water cooled. As the world gets hotter, more people will have the same issues.

I think it's a great car. If it gets people into EVs then that's great. I love my leaf 40 kWh tekna. But if I was looking again this would be on my radar.

I absolutely love my ZS EV. I've driven it since December and despite lockdown and working from home the car has saved me £600 in diesel. Without lockdown it would have been £1200 saved so far.
So it saves me money. Will eventually pay for itself. It's relaxing and comfortable to drive. Very nippy when you want it. And it's a great talking point with people when they see that it's electric. There are some downsides for me though. I'd like to turn off the bong chime. It's vastly overkill. And I would have e the option for 19" wheels if MG had it, but they don't offer wheel options. I still think the wheels look too small in the arches.
Overall I'm very happy with the car though. Cheap motoring with a few frills
Last MG I had was a ZT260. Mustang 4.6 V8 - boy that was fun, but how times change, eh? I have had one of these from the MG dealer over the weekend and it's really good. So....order being placed tomorrow. I currently use my Rover 75 V8 for the commute, so this will save c£2k/year in fuel, plus free road tax etc.
A freaking bargain. People complaining about not being a Tesla Model 3 are delusional. You could only dream of getting a car like this years ago for that amount of money.
50% the price of the T3 entry level (once specced for paint delivery etc).. T3 is a very inspiring car this one is just down right practical.... though the wait times aren't quite as good as made out... factor in 3-6 months for delivery...

Great presentation and lots of information. It would also be helpful to compare the warranties provided by each manufacturer in regard to replacement of parts, batteries, etc, because I think these will be different from each manufacturer. And also the support provided by local dealers in the UK who will manage the sales and maintenance afterwards.

I've had one of these on long-term rental for about 6 months. In general it's great, but the brakes are really grabby. It's getting interesting price wise but the range is just a bit limited. Commute 86 miles a day and definitely want 2 days run time out of a car between charges in a ideal world. Kudos to MG though great value if you only use for smaller distances. Next 2 years or so should be very interesting.

It is certainly a better car than I thought it would be. But I don’t think the MG won’t have it all it’s own way, the e Niro for example has a better battery / range although the MG is significantly cheaper. Well done Chinese MG.

"Established" car reviewers do not yet know that the features which are really important in modern EV's have little to do with cosmetics, boot capacity, adjustability of steering wheels, the design of the air vent.... and everything to do with the electronics, drive-train technology, and (perhaps most important) computer and software systems.
Here we have a review that completely ignores what the public really needs to know when an EV is being assessed. I am FAR MORE INTERESTED IN:
1. What type of electric motor is used? (There are fundamentally three types - Tesla now has a new type, not used in any other car). A critical question as it relates to performance, energy efficiency, and reliability.
2. Battery configuration, and (if possible) underlying cell chemistry - along with thermal management system (VERY important, considering how ambient temperature affects range and performance and charging rates).
3. Computer system - particularly all the driver-assist features, and how the computer (and the software) stack up against competitors - using Tesla as the industry benchmark... One has to, I'm afraid... Tesla is not just reshaping the car itself, but the very reasons why and how we use them.
It's clear that at this price point, this MG is MUCH closer to being a golf-cart than it is a Tesla Model 3, and any comparison would be unfair... but I'd like to see these reviewers start to compare the important stuff. Reason they don't of course, is that they don't know anything about it. Ask this guy to explain the benefits of a 3-phase 6-pole permanent magnet reduction motor, and you might as well be asking him to tell you how a MRI scanner functions.
Until the CAR REVIEWERS start to learn and understand what is really important when discussing modern EV's, their reviews are pointless.
Well actually the 'standard' stuff on usability, driving position etc is needed for any car review. The battery cell chemistry would mean nothing to 90% buying this car, and the reviewer had no opportunity to test the driver assist features, so did not speculate on them.
Established car reviewers are established because they cater for the general populous, your points would be for a niche group.

That is ridiculous. First of all, that information is available in the web and in car teardowns videos for most EVs-not a car driving review video. Second, what car reviewer cares about the technical points you brought up because it doesn't matter for the driving experience. The only technical aspect that might matter is whether the battery has a liquid thermal management system and a long battery warranty. Everything else it pointless from the perspective of the driver. It's not like an SRM has a different torque curve than an inductive motor or a different sound! Battery chemistries?! There are only 2 chemistries in use right now anyway NCA and NMC and it doesn't matter one bit to a driver.
You are a dinosaur still thinking in ICE terms when it mattered whether a car had a V6 or V8 or ran on petrol or diesel.

Not only are cars about to be powered by a new technology (historically alien to car production, from when the ICE became the economic choice), but even more significant is HOW cars are going to be used. Like it or not, cars of the not-too-distant future will be self-driving. And this is not "Tesla Fanboy Speak". ALL serious car makers know this is the future, and all serious car makers are seriously investing in it - in various iterations - hoping that their strategy is both correct, and facilitates their future viability. Across the automotive industry, R&D in fossil-fuel engine technology has all but ceased. No automotive manufacturer is now going to put billions into a new design of petrol or diesel engine. The money (increasing quantities of it) are being invested in electronics, batteries and drivetrains, how this dovetails with computers and software, and how all this will hang together when cars become fully autonomous.
People who "review" cars do so with the aim of helping people make informed choices. In fact, most consumers trust such reviewers. Many people (as evidenced from comments even on this review) have indicated that "yes... looks OK for an EV... will definitely consider it, based on what you've said..."
But this is no longer about "car vs car". As I said at the top of this comment, we are entering a radical transformation of not just what cars ARE, but how they will be USED.
Most people may not even need to buy a car any more. What most people want is cheap, efficient, safe and convenient TRANSPORT. When this can be provided by a vehicle that drives itself, it no longer makes any sense for people to take on what has up to now been a LIABILITY (a car is not an asset) that costs a fortune to buy, to own, to maintain and to operate.
For people who own a car that has FSD capability, they potentially have a very lucrative asset (an Uber without a human driver). Never before (in history) has a vehicle had the potential of becoming an asset when its owner or any other person is not in it physically operating it. But most people will not even need to OWN the car... they will just use it when it's needed - times that they need to travel from A to B.
SO... if you are in the market for a car (a new one), then in a couple of years from now, it is not only functionally useless (you can get the same "service" from a robotaxi for a fraction of the expense), but there is no market for your (now used) car, or any need to buy the same redundant tech in a "new model". Nobody is going to buy your used car, because doing so is plain stupid in an era where you can get from A to B just as easily and FAR more cheaply by NOT owning the car.
This MG may be a "cheaper" EV - but given what is happening in the whole concept of motoring, buying one is stupid. It is redundant, and in its current iteration, has NO capacity to become useful in a world of FSD. It starts as a liability, and from there it remains so.
Because people "trust" what these reviewers say, to listen to their "advice" is actually going to be a very expensive mistake.
I love cars - even ICE cars, and there are a lot of EV's that are really nice (including, in its plain rudimentary way, this MG) - but to buy a car that is incapable of factoring in the future is plain stupid.

Curious - the entertainment system shows Android Auto - the current ZS (Which I'm taking delivery of in a couple days) only offers Apple - What Car? Do you know if this will be part of a firmware upgrade offered to customers of the other models? Seems to be a strange omission especially given the keen pricing of the car - Android traditionally is the phone of choice by people not willing to pay the 'Apple tax' :-)

After owning the MG ZS EV for 2 years it has been one of the best decisions made.
Very cheap to run @ 1.5p/mile using home charging.
Very comfortable to be in with a great seating position (yes it's an SUV style vehicle.. but it's taller not longer.. and for those of us with real back issues a more upright seating position is the best way to travel!)
Nothing fell off it. In fact it's been the least trouble free car I have owned. Do not listen to those that day all things made in China are low quality! The new BMW EV, the Tesla Model Y, iPhones... All made in China! All to a very very high standard!

Excellent service from the local MG garage (who also sell Renault and Dacia).
One issue I had was a bad door seal that caused a leak. Thus was quickly rectified by the dealer with no further issues.
The autopilot, blind spot warning etc has been great.
Efficiency has been very good. And the acceleration is very surprising.. especially in sports mode. Instant power with no lag.
I am struggling to find any real world negotiate.
Running costs have literally saved us £1000s Vs an ice car as there is no expensive service costs and no road tax ( sure, that might change in the future but I can only operate in the hear and now).
The MG was funded, in part, by the EST interest free loan, so it was a no brainer really. The loan payment per month was around half of the cost that petrol would have been!..
We are just changing to a newer EV and the depreciation on the MG has been amazing.. amazingly low.. all in it has been the least depreciation in any car that I have owned.
If there is a downside it has seen the UK charge infrastructure. Local journeys are simply a breeze. However venture further afield and you need to do a bit of planning by using the likes of ZapMap etc.. there is nothing more annoying than getting to a charger and finding it broken or there being a queue for it.
This is NOT a reflection on the MG.
If all I did was local journeys it would not be getting traded in.
Love or lothe EVs they are the future.

I do not think this should be compared to Tesla Model Y, for the simple reason that the MG ZS EV is a car that will be available a year before the first Tesla Model Y is planned to be delivered to its first costumers. There is also a significant price difference, with the Model Y pricing being higher than that of the Model 3 and thus significantly higher than the MG ZS EV.
A comparable EV is the Hyundai Kona EV 39 kWh, which might have a smaller battery but also have a better efficiency that makes its range a little better. It will be interesting to see what the launch of the MG ZS EV will do to the pricing of this EV, a car that has often been criticised for costing to much when compared to the 64 kWh version that isn't that much more expensive. Will Hyundai meet the competition or let MG and MINI have the cheap EV market for themselves? - If they cost the same the Hyundai would be my choice, but if the difference is a couple of thousand pounds there could be a reason to go MG.

What's the warranty? My Chrysler Pacifica hybrid comes with 160,000km and 10 years on the power train... Double in less harsh climates. If you have to swap a battery, is it worth it? Plus, I shall mention tires and brakes changed more fequently because of the added weight of the battery. I would like one imported to Canada as we are Brits like you too, we just got lost on a different continent (don't the Chinese know that)?

Brakes tend to last alot longer on electric cars due to regen braking typically 3 times longer. As for tyres they also last the same amount of time because the way electric cars deliver the power to the wheels.

As people get used to using regen for slowing down you actually eliminate much of the wear (longer light presses on the pedal)

Yes this car is a bargain, but there is growing awareness in the large community who have ordered and don’t have a delivery date that SAIC won’t be able to deliver.
Nice review, very professional. Why not mention the NCAP test rating? The side pole test does not look very good. Consumers most know this.
NCAP was done on petrol version without efeatures like lka, adaptive cruise assist , blind spot detection, reversing camera etc so we all suspect its NCAP 4* vs petrol 3* .. however the electric version hasn't been put forward for tests so like a lot of it... its a bit of a punt ... but given the price of the car.

My son has the petrol version and its a good car. As a test bed for a EV its a good start and as tech gets better the cars will,but at what cost? How much natural resources are needed to make the batteries. However how much does it cost to charge ! No one ever mentions this ?

As this is just the start of electric cars I'm sure tech will get better.electric lorries HGV bringing food in the cost to charge them has got to be Passed on the batteries in those things just ain't viable they just don't have the range. Cars towing caravans same again not enough range.there just to expensive electric cars for the average guy on the street who can just afford to keep a job and home going with today's cars.with the electric bills going to get higher more expence going out less food coming in.its a hard balancing act .
