Definitely a diss song…their 2nd one. “ Flick of the Wrist” was their first one. Freddie was PO’d at their manager who was telling them they weren’t making any money after 3 successful albums, but he was driving around in a Rolls Royce. One of his rules was Roger not breaking any more drumsticks. Don’t make Freddie mad 😂

YESSSS .. The ultimate diss song to their former manager Norm Sheffield!! I love the beautiful piano intro then “wham” in crawls the beast .. that slithering snake 🐍 At times Brian’s guitar sounds like a hissing rattling snake 🐍 Before Sheffield died he wrote a book called Life On Two Legs!

The moral of the story is: Don't piss Freddie off!!! Those screeches are guitar. Queen didn't use any Synth at this point in their recording or in their shows. When you see Freddie at shows bending over and flashing his behind at the audience, he is actually just telling their former manager, one more time, "you can kiss my ass goodbye." That manager tried to tell Queen they would be nothing without him. Fortunately the boys were highly educated and knew better so they bought their way out of their contract.

Basically it's about the band's first management. The guys had had several successful international tours, three albums and no money. The managers were travelling in limos and wearing bespoke suits while the band were almost on the breadline. Roger was told to stop breaking his drumsticks as there was no money to replace them. John, recently married, had asked for an advance to put a deposit on a house and was denied. Freddie snapped and this was the result. An absolute masterpiece of viciousness and vitriol.

Won’t get into it all …… but one of the many things I love about Freddie is even though he was a talented genius and a loyal generous friend he didn’t take anybody’s shit !! ( excuse my French )

😄Yeah, The moral of this song is…
    NEVER PISS OFF FREDDIE🙀
(Brian May said he even felt kind of bad playing it in live shows because of the lyrics.)

In EVERY live show that Queen did, Freddie always "presented his backside" to the audience at-some-point during the concert... That was always his "KISS MY A______!" to the former manager that this song was written about.

Freddie wrote this song about Queen's first manager, Norman Sheffield. Obviously, the arrangement did not end well.
The background story is: Queen, by 1971, had a successful following in the London club circuit but could not get an album contract. They were too poor to afford to pay for time in a studio to record their music themselves.
Norman Sheffield along with his brother, Barry created one of the leading recording studios in the world. Trident Studios. Norman heard Queen and offered them a recording contract at his studio. Unfortunately, the members of Queen were all young and naive and knew nothing about the music business. They didn't even have a manager at the time.
The final agreement they made with Trident had Norman as their manager. The agreement allowed them to record at Trident studio (for free) using the best engineers and equipment during the off-hours (like 3 AM), plus Trident would pay each of them £35 a week (less than USD 40 per week). In return, all the music they recorded belonged to Trident and Trident was responsible to find distribution for their album.
They so they signed an agreement with the Trident Group in 1972 and went into the studio to record their first album, titled QUEEN. Trident had difficulty getting any label company to distribute the album in the Uk and the USA. Everyone agreed that Queen was talented but their music was so different from what was being played at the time, no company would agree to distribute the album.
Finally, Trident, using their own money, launched the album. It did alright and Trident was able to recoup the money they had invested but they didn't make much of a profit. Queen on the other hand was building a successful album following and their name recognition was exploding.
Then Queen put out their 2nd album, titled "QUEEN II", also known as the Black and White album. It was released by EMI in the UK and Elektra Records in the US. It did even better and it peaked at number 5 album in the U.K.
Then Queen recorded their 3rd album, SHEER HEART ATTACK. It moved away from the progressive rock of the two earlier albums to more pop-centric and conventional rock tracks and marked a step toward the "classic" Queen sound.
Sheer Heart Attack was a big hit and produced Queen's first hit single, "Killer Queen".
The band members noticed that Norman had bought a brand new Rolls Royce and added a new pool to his house, yet each member of Queen was only being paid £65 per week (equivalent to a little more than $70. USD per week). The world thought they were rich but they were struggling to pay rent and eat.
Poor Roger Taylor (Queen's drummer) could not afford to replace the drumsticks he kept breaking. When he asked for more money, Norman refused and told him to not hit the drums so hard.
John Deacon (Queen's bass player) asked to borrow £10,000 to buy a house for his new bride but they refused to loan him the money.
That really pissed Freddie off. When John joined Queen in 1971, he was only 19. Freddie was the oldest member at 24 and he took John under his wing and began mentoring him. Freddie and John were like big brothers/little brothers and it was Freddie that got John to begin to write music (John wrote one of Queen's biggest hits, "Another One Bites The Dust"). Freddie's response when they refused to loan John the money was to inform them that they would get no more music from him.
Queen had contacts now in the music business and they were able to get John Reid (Elton John's old manager) to begin managing them and they hired Jim (Miami) Beech as their business solicitor. Miami worked to untangle them from Tident (and, yes, it cost them a lot of money) but told them not to worry and just go and make the best album they could.
That album, their first not owned or produced by Trident, was "A Night At The Opera" with Bohemian Rhapsody on it. They were so in debt to everyone when they went in to record "A Night At The Opera" that if this album didn't sell big, Queen was done for. But the gamble was worth it. They became rock stars with rock star money. Plus, they learned to be more involved in the business side of their music. Eventually, they became their own producers and managed their businesses with just Miami Beech as their lawyer.
But Freddie held a grudge against Norman and wrote "Death On Two Legs" about him. Some say it is the first "Diss" song.
