Their manager, Norman Sheffield was guilty of stealing all the band's money. Freddie had had it and they got out of their contract and finally started making money for themselves. He wrote this song about the manager, "You suck my blood like a leech, you break the law and you breach." Great personal experience put into words.

You are right, Freddie was angry. Their manager had mismanaged them and stolen all their money, Even though they had 3 successful albums and successful tours the band members were still making so little that they were still living in the same apartments they had been living in before they got started while their manager was driving a new Rolls Royce. When the band asked for an advance so John Deacon could put a down payment on a home for he, his wife and his soon to be son, the band was told no because there was not only no money, the band was so far in debt that they were technically bankrupt. They managed to get out of their contract and started managing themselves along with getting financial help from Elton John's manager. Once they did this and delivered A Night At The Opera, the band actually started making real money. So yeah, Freddie was very angry. Brian thought the words were so harsh that he was reluctant to be part of it. He did come around but as Freddie put it when asked about it "Brian is a gentleman, sometimes too much of one."

    BTW...
In EVERY live show, there was always a point where Freddie would turn around, bend over, and "present his arse" to the audience... This was forevermore his way of "flipping off" Mr. Sheffield.

What I love about this is how we go from this biting rage lyrically with Brian's incredible guitar, and then it bleeds immediately into this posh pinky up piano of Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon. Huge tonal shift and you knew you were in for a hell of a ride.

I believe there's kind of a precursor to this on the previous album (Sheer Heart Attack) called "Flick of the wrist" which also makes references to the unnamed person.

All Queen members were very much talented.
Freddie IS the greatest singer in history, he has a power in his voice like no other, having this same power in most ranges. An incredible songwriter. An amazing pianist. He didn't use to play guitar a lot, the only song he plays the guitar is in Crazy Little Thing Called Love, but he wrote the basic chords of Ogre Battle on the guitar, so he must have some talent. He also has two solo albums.
Brian May is really talented in various types of string instruments. Some exotic examples are koto, harp and banjolele. Needless to say he is one of the top guitarists of all time. He also plays the piano with a really beautiful approach. At early stages he had a really sweet and effective voice in the lower ranges, but as he progresses (especially in his solo career after Freddie's death) he develops a really powerful voice, becoming more emotive and also providing more rock'n'roll feel. He also is an amazing songwriter being the second with most mosts songs written for Queen. He also has two solo albums and a mini album.
John is also really talented, having being a rhythm guitarist at first and then discovering the bass which he would come to be one of the best of all times on. He also plays acoustic guitar in many Queen songs and sometimes even electric guitar, he even has a solo in Misfire. He also plays piano, one example is You're My Best Friend. His songwriting is really a highlight, despite being the one with least songs in Queen, almost every of his songs were single-deserving, and a lot of them actually ended up being singles. Sadly he doesn't have a big solo catalog, one of the reasons is that he didn't consider his voice proper to sing.
Roger Taylor is by far the most multi-talented when it comes to instruments. He played everything, piano, bass, guitars and drums, of course. In fact his first solo works, featured him playing all the instruments and singing everything. He has 6 solo albums and 3 albums as a leader of his side band, The Cross. His songwriting didn't have one of the great starts, but he developed that and became a great songwriter. And of course I have to mention his voice. In the 70s he had an incomparable falsetto voice, really angelic. Sadly, he lost it. But he also has an extraordinary Rock'n'Roll raspy voice, having the real Rock'n'Roll voice of the band. Not being limited to this, his "normal" voice can also be very adapted.

I am so glad someone listened to something other than Bohemian Rhapsody, and it was one of the 2 of my favorites. This is a phenomenal album aside from the aforementioned megasmash overplayed hit. Death On Two Legs... and The Prophet's Song were the two songs, to me, that stood out from the others, and I love the entire album. Seaside Rendezvous, '39, Sweet Lady, Im In Love With My Car... so many great songs. Queen was the 2nd band I ever saw live back in 1977, shortly after this was released and they were on top of their game. Hope you loved the whole album.

Queen was very naive when they signed with their first manager, Norman Sheffield. The deal they made allowed the band free access tor record at Trident Studios (Norman and his brother owned Trident Studio which was considered the best at the time) with the use of the best engineers and producers but only during off-peak hours (like 3 A.M). Also, Norman agreed to pay each band member a stipend of £35 (about $45) a week.
In return Sheffield owned the band's output. That turned out to be a deal with the devil.
By the time Queen had released their 3rd album (Sheer Heart Attack) which reached number 2, on chart for 42 weeks, achieved Platinum statu, the stipend that each band member received was only £65 a week (about $83). They noticed that Norman Sheffield had brand new Rolls Royce and was building a pool at his home.
Something was not right. They were becoming one of the most successful rock and roll bands, their albums made lots of money, yet they could hardly make their rent or buy food.
When Roger Taylor (Queen's drummer) asked for additional money to buy drums sticks because he broke so many. He was told no more money and to quit hitting the drums so hard. When John Deacon (Queen's bass player) was getting married and asked for a loan of £10,000 to buy a house, he was refused.
When John was refused the loan, that was the last straw for Freddie. Freddie and John were extremely close. Freddie took John under his wing when John joined the band and began mentoring him (John was only 19 when he joined the band). Freddie pushed John to write music and helped him with it. (Queen is the only group in which all 4 members wrote music and where each member has songs in the Music Hall of Fame).
John and Freddie had a big brother/little brother relationship and Freddie took it really personally when John's loan was refused That was the last straw for Freddie. He informed them that they were not going to get anymore music out of him.
The band then decided to contact John Reid to be their new manager. John Reid assured them that he would deal with their business arrangement with Norman Sheffield and who told them to go make the best album they could and not worry.
Reid sorted out their business issues but it cost them a lot of money.. They were totally broke and owed everyone when they began recording "A Night At the Opera". It was make or break time for them.
Lucky for them "A Night At The Opera" was a major success and they not only paid off all their debt but became millionaires because of it. Plus Freddie was able to vent his anger and frustration in his music. It all turned out good.

You said you don't really know about the technical side of music. The engineering and mixing on this album is extraordinary. Just listen on headphones and hear all the times an instrument goes from one ear to the other. Sound effects as well. The many, many different tones of Brian May's guitar. Outstanding production. The really fat tone of each of the drums that during a drum roll go from your right ear to your left ear.

There's a HILARIOUS story told by John Reid about Freddie's temper. (Reid was Elton John's manager, he also managed Queen from 1975-78, during which time they had a great working relationship.)
Freddie and Reid were meeting at a restaurant, when Fred mentioned that he had done an interview (I don't remember who with) without telling Reid first. Reid got mad because he had a rule that his clients never agree to interviews without consulting with him first. So, he scolded Freddie, telling him he shouldn't have done that... then got up and LEFT Freddie sitting in the restaurant.
Not long after getting home, Reid jumped when there was a HUGE CRASH as A BRICK came through his window! When he looked out of the hole in his now-broken window down to the street below, there was Fred - standing with hands on hips. Freddie yelled up at Reid:
"DON'T YOU F______G EVER WALK OUT ON ME AGAIN!"😂
(Then Reid invited Fred up to his flat, they "made up" and everything was fine.)

Great song that throws us off … not sure what’s coming … when Freddie begins you might think Freddie is telling one of his interesting stories but then it gets personal and so unlike Freddie!! I think part of what makes this song work is that it is so personal and in it’s own way it’s rather straight forward and poetic. The fact that it is everything Freddie is not seems to be someone losing control … yet so in control at the same time. Scary !! Makes you want to undo whatever terrible thing you did to elicit such a reaction!

People bring up John and his family's growing need for money, but I believe the band's discontent with Sheffield started when Brian collapsed during their US tour with Mott the Hoople for their second album. Brian had gotten his immunization shot to tour abroad, but Sheffield would only allow the band to go to an approved (cheap) clinic for these shots. Brian's needle had not been properly sterilized, leading to a severe infection and hepatitis. Between his liver failing, the hepatitis, and gangrene, Brian was in bad shape. But instead of allowing immediate treatment in the US, Sheffield demanded the band return to Great Britain, where treatment would be cheaper. Brian almost lost his arm.
After that incident, Sheffield showed up and demanded that the band begin work on their third album since the tour had been canceled. When the band told them they could not record without Brian, Sheffield told them to replace Brian as guitarist. The band flat-out refused. Freddie then began to hatch a plan to drop Sheffield and Trident Studios. He hired Jim "Miami" Beach as a lawyer, began their negotiations with EMI, and started to plan and record what they could for their third album as an advertisement to EMI. When Brian pushed his recovery so hard that he ended up back in the hospital with a stomach ulcer, Freddie cemented their determination to leave Trident. The theft hurt them in many ways but the seeds were planted long before many think.

That manager did not want Bohemian Rhapsody to get released. He was dead set against it as he thought it was too strange.

BoRhap hadn't been written until after they left that management. John Reid arranged the settlement to get out of their old contract, but they still got a small percentage of the next 6 albums. They made BoRhap under John Reid's management. By the way, that is another big error in the movie. John Reid and Queen parted company a couple years later, amicably, when Queen decided they were able and ready to manage themselves, with their attorney Jim Beach's assistance, and John Deacon overlooking the band's financial decisions

I feel like all of America can dedicate this one to tRump. Lol. But, seriously if you like the heavier side of Queen you should give a listen to Stone Cold Crazy, Hammer to Fall, and The Kurgan's Theme
