Great video! I learned many new things. Prior to this video, I knew very little about Plainfield's history. I can appreciate your avoidance of the grissly details. Exactly what he got up to with those corpses is just as legendary as the rest of the story, but once you know, you can't get rid of the mental images, and yeah - that wouldn't be "family friendly." This narrative struck a good balance by not over-sensationalizing. I've hung out in Plainfield before, even chilled in that little garden area!

The suspense is killing me about the dark secret and I love how you had that "suspenseful" music as you played as you opened the dark colored car door. And as you did, I could not help but make that "dun dun dun dun" spooky music sound - which then made me laugh all the more.
In Wisconsin, there used to be 3 bars for every church LOL... Namur, WI had 5, Brussels had 6.
Much the same in the UP of Michigan. Any small town seemed to have a church, 2 bars, and a hand full of houses. What else are you going to do when the snow is a55hole deep?
At one time Kenosha,Wl had more bars per city blocks. 3 to 5 bars on many city blocks.

Never would know Plainfield has dark history. Thanks for sharing the founding and early history. I like that you always point out historic buildings. The town seemed so quiet and lonely. Always love fresh fruit and produce stands! Love that victorian tyoe house you quickly showed. Churches next to a bar 😂! That garden plaza you pointed was cute! Ed Gein was one sick and psychopathic individual. Almost forgot he lived there in Plainfield. Love visiting old cementaries
Another terrific episode, Sally. Nicely written, narrated and edited. I love the way you bring these small towns to life by looking 'under the hood' so to speak-bringing out the historical and architectural details and putting them in the context of the current state of things.
In rural Wisconsin, bars outnumber churches about 3 to 1.

Sally, please do a video on Anita,Iowa. I visited the town years ago and just fell in love with it. It's the kind of place that if you look up the word America in the dictionary, you'll see a picture of Anita, Iowa.

Back when this was going on my Grandfather use to rent a vacation cabin there. The summer before Ed was caught My family (granpa , grandma ,mom , and two aunts) ran into him several times in town, and were quite shocked, when the story hit the Milwaukee papers . As Fate would have it, thirty plus years later, I had several close encounters with Jeffery Dahmer, But thats another story!

When I was a boy and digging around my grandmother's attic, I came across Ed Gein articles. I used to drive her insane about information on Ed Gein. lol
Be thankful if your fascination stayed between you and her. I was a six grader when I did a school project on Ed Gein and my teacher found it disturbing enough that she called my parents in. Ha!

Nothing happened where I was born in the south. Ft. Atkinson, WI.
My grandfather was a deputy sheriff of Wood County, and he was there - at the Ed Gein house and saw the collection inside.
He told me all about the inside of the house when I was 13 tears old, back in 1974.
He knew the people involved, and told me that the citizens of that city burnt down the Ed Gein property - because someone wanted to turn it into a tourist destination.
Wood County was involved because the city of Plainfield borders on Wood County.
(Ed Gein often babysat his neighbor's kids - according to my grandfather, and other sources. People accepted him as just a slightly eccentric village resident.)
I was just a kid at that time,but I do remeber the dark humored jokes that made the rounds with us kids,

Oh Sally! But have you ever been to Whitewater, WI ? The Witches Tower? I walked around it to see what would happen back in the day. I also went to the library that had the book but I didn’t ask them about it. There are a few videos on you tube about it. We were in town to paint the other tower.
Sally, that cemetery is too creepy to stick around after dark, now that I know what happened there. Very interesting look at a small town, who would have thought the crazy things that happened there. Thanks for the creepy history lesson. Lynn & Steve

I had an uncle who grew up in Plainfield, he knew Ed Gein and always said that he felt uncomfortable when ever Ed was around.

When you grew up in waushara county you knew the story well.

I have been going there almost 50 yrs. My mom grew up in Wood county, and she told me all about Ed Gain, after I asked her what she knew from her childhood. I discovered more about him from the heavy metal band Slayer song "Dead Skin Mask" written in 1990. His grave in unmarked as someone once stole it.

They replaced it once or twice, but people still kept stealing or vandalizing it, so they gave up.

I only watched the first minute of your video, I didn’t cheat of look at the comments, true, I already knew who you were referring to, the Butcher of Plainfield, Wisconsin, no other than Ed Gein, I know everything about him. Years ago, I rented a video from Blockbuster, when it was still in operation, the movie was entitled “Gein” , picked randomly, and wow, it went from there. Not the really dumb movie about him,where Ed Gein was arrogant and nasty, Ed wasn’t like that in real life! Crazy to know this occurred during the 1950’s, his Mother was a raving lunatic, a religious nut, that molded Ed into what he became, I blame her! The inspiration for several movies, Texas Chainsaw massacre, Psycho, Maniac, Silence of the Lambs, etc. Good video, y’all!
They wanted to actually film "gein" in plainfield, but the town wasnt having it.

Our Family would stop at the Plainfield Truck Stop every Year on our way to Mercer Wisconsin for Family Vacation…Sad that it is gone…Best Food Ever…..

My dad was a little kid when Ed Gein got arrested. He said that my grandparents never told him about it because we have family everywhere. Thankfully no one was a victim.
Actually the building starks and luce used to be my great grandmothers building for the longest time running since the 70's.
You should travel to Footville Wisconsin. Home of the nations first lighted softball field.

Plainfield WI is a synonym of Ed Gein.
"Iglesia De Dios" literally translates to "Church of God", so yeah definitely a church! There are growing Hispanic populations in many small towns even in the upper Midwest.

I drove through Plainfield many times when I lived in Wisconsin. Born and raised. If I'm not mistaken, Ed did some atrocious things to the bodies of women. Pure evil.
They made a movie back in the 70s called deranged. It story is very similar to Ed's and it was also filmed in Wisconsin. Look it up it is really scary.

How about showing a Municipality of Spooner, Wisconsin?
Be cautious and respectful if anyone decides to visit Plainfield. As is the same with Dahmer in areas of Milwaukee, the locals are VERY vigilant if they think you're there as a tourist interested in Gein. (Coincidentally, I'm also a professional drag queen, a difficult business to succeed in anywhere, but even moreso in a state that's had two infamous serial killers with gender/sexuality issues. Ha!)
My friend and I arrived as perfectly respectable adults who did our best to look as though we were merely visiting the graveyard in the middle of the day and we _still_ had a vehicle call us out from the road like we were teenagers up to no good. Not that I blame them - Gein's grave hasn't had a headstone for years as it was repeatedly stolen (it remains unmarked to this day, with only his mother and brother on each side. Coincidentally, Bernice Worden was nearby as well).
There is one interesting detail of our drive there that was alarming: when we visited in 2010, the hardware store was still open and we were simply intending to walk in, browse for a moment, and leave. What shocked us was that upon entering, somebody had just spilled a can of red paint all over the floor. Quite the coincidence considering the day Gein was arrested, he'd shot Bernice Worden in the shop and then took her body to his farm in a truck. The blood on the floor was what set off the entire investigation.
I'd always been fascinated with the Gein case - his crimes are written into the fabric of pop culture, having been the inspiration behind _Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,_ and _Silence of the Lambs._ That said, there's not much to see at all. His land can be tricky to find and is posted property; even from the road, there's really nothing to see as the house was torched shortly after the murders and nature has entirely reclaimed it in the sixty years since. We drove an hour and a half that day and spent all of perhaps 20 minutes in Plainfield.
Cant blame the whole community for one crazy murderer.

Live a couple hours away from there. We've been there a number of times including the cemetery where he is buried by his parents. My husband's Dad was a postman in Madison, WI, and delivered mail to the different depts at Mendota state where Ed Gein was. He caught a glimpse of him many times.
P.S. Ed Gein is no secret.

maybe it was a sort of Indian curse, because the Blackhawk tribe was chased across Wisconsin, being murdered all the way, until their women and children were shot to death trying to wade into the Mississippi River, like a turkey shoot.
Abraham Lincoln, every child's favorite president, who initiated the war of extermination against the American Indians West of the Mississippi during the civil war was involved in the slaughter of the Blackhawk Indians. He may have been killing women and children from the shore at the end of it. Where else would he have been after pursuing the tribe across the state?
You will find the marker South of La Crosse, where I used to live.
Newspaper men, probably suspicious that he was one of the notorious murderers, asked him about his participation in the notorious slaughter, but like all politicians, he claimed to have forgotten.
He said all he remembered was the mosquitos.
It was a dead giveaway, because the Indians called La Crosse the place of sleeping sickness, because it was notorious for its marshes and mosquitos.
He was there, at the end of the war, when they slaughtered the tribe as it attempted to flee across the river.
He should have been hung.
Shooting was too good for him.

I've read and listened to the audiobook of "The Wisconsin Death Trip" - dark, maybe too dark for some people, but a great source of true history.

That's pretty much the consensus. The house burned down shortly before Ed's property and possessions were to be auctioned off. Reportedly there was a lot of worry among folks in the area that someone would buy the house and make it into some macabre tourist attraction. And since the house had no electricity and no one living there anymore, how else could it have happened?
BTW, somebody did buy Ed's car at the auction, and displayed "the Ed Gein murder car" at county fairs and such.

What most people did not know, Ed had a friend named Gus, who helped him dig up freshly dug graves, for some reason, Gus was committed into a Mental institution! Fun fact! I should have typed, do not know.

If Plainfield was smart, they'd open an Ed Gein Museum and promote it BIG TIME. 😂
Not what Plainfield has ever wanted. They burnt down the house to prevent that from ever happening.
So says my late maternal grandfather, a sheriff's deputy from the neighboring county of Wood, who was inside the house after the fact and well acquainted with the locals.
He related his story to me in 1974, when I was 13 years old, and many other times until he passed in 1988.
On a similar note, years ago a friend of mine was director of the county historical society in the Kansas county where the "In Cold Blood" murders occurred. She once told me that she mentioned to her board of directors she was thinking about doing an exhibit on the murders for the 30th anniversary of the incident, and the board emphatically told her not to. They said that even 30 years later, it was too terrible and sensitive a topic to bring up. I'll bet the people of Plainfield feel the same way.
My grandma saved a Ed Geen lamp shade for me and i have it here in hawaii where i live its made from human skin and as grandma used to say it casts the most beautiful light!
