Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

honestly, this is one of the most under rated channel I've ever come across. The depth of every aspect, from the education to even the camera shots and editing. its all absolutely wonderful! please keep making these kinds of videos and videos in this style in general. they're great!!
David Ashby III it's just like a well made tv show
Watch in a nutshell, they cram stuff oo
suprem
Also, ORIGINALITY
he desterves a medal
education? 0:38 "the wood burns without the presence of oxygen".... nope
Make sure that you use soft wood for the charcoal. You get the best quality charcoal that way
wont it break really easily?
Arjen Hartink since he reinforcing it anyway by using the pencil like closure it should be fine
Harsimran Singh yeah thats true but it might use up faster so that you have to sharpen it more often
Arjen Hartink Yes,that is true.
Would hibiscus wood do? Otherwise I'd have to use casserina wood from the beach.
For making Chinese brushes, the craftsman usually use a mix of different furs, such as wolf, human hair, or other materials of different hardness and absorbability so it'll be perfect.

"I appear to have glued my fingers together"
*pause*
Camera guy laughs
You should have folded the horse hair in half before inserting it into the stick!
Thanks for the advice!
I'm not sure if it's good advice, but thought maybe it would be easier to insert it into the hole in the stick that way =)
Serplanter Tie it like a tassel beforehand for a very sturdy insert.
Show us how you made that power drill
+Joe Fedewa black magic
Joe Fedewa XD
1year later what drill?
Joe Fedewa He could’ve just formed a cord and pump drill...
And the airplane from other projects and car
You should fly to Australia and do a collab with primitive technology
Zombery absolutely
Omg yes. They’d start a nation
And howtobasic
"Building a plane from scratch"
There wouldn't be much talking
This channel should be called: “ultimate arts and crafts”
Kudos for using a non-Western way of writing as well.
" I get the straightest sticks I could find"
* pulls out a really crooked stick
This is literally one of the coolest channels I have ever laid eyes on. Your videos are so informative and are super cool! I like how you explore all the different options of making a certain thing.
That Japanese Calligrapher is amazing, even that simple example looked amazing
When you put wood in a sealed container and put it in a fire, that wood does not burn, burning is a chemical reaction usually involving oxygen, you char the wood.
Yes, CHARcoal. Do you understand english?
I love how he was so brutally honest about calligraphy. I’ve practiced it for years and all I have to show for it is better normal handwriting than most everyone. Compared to good calligraphers I am a joke.
It's always cool to see you make things like that☺
2:16
So that’s how he made the glue.
3:35 Mike: this is the basic stARting point... can anyone one else relate besides me?
Honestly the second he demostrated how the ancients made a form of glue and answered like a thousand questions in that very moment i just had to sub
This channel is so under rated why can’t life be fair like dumb channels get millions of views and smart channels with actual content get a couple thousand?!😪😪😪
I wonder how triggered peta would be
T h e S k y L o r d 7 imagine if they see him plucking feathers from turkey s
Next time you do something similar with charcoal , remember that you can use that charcoal , grind it up , then get some wood sap , then melt the sap and add the charcoal , then mix them up (remember that you shouldn't put it on strong fire , because you don't want for the sap to start boiling) , and then take a stick and put the glue you made on it , then let it set. What you get after it hardens is pretty much like hot glue , except it's black and when you want to glue something with it , you need to warm it up (don't put it on strong fire , the charcoal mixed with the sap will burn and ruin it).
I hope he didn't throw out the unused portions of that horse... it would seem rather wasteful. :(
TheAprone
Yes, because he would throw away the horse just for cutting some if its hair.
TheAprone He didn't kill it!
Brian Leonard It’s a joke...
Hey man!! Big fan of what ya do on this channel and I was hoping that you could one day show us how to make a printing press! That would be so dang neat
RUclips recommended you have not failed me this time.
Really nice channel concept. Love it !
Can I ask you how you make your intro, and these moving drawings (generally at the beginning) ?
Greetings from France ! :)
+Geoffrey Wauters Thanks! The illustrations are made with Adobe Illustrator, and then animated with After Effects.
interesting, i love these how to videos mixed in history
That calligraphy guy's voice cracked like a billion times
He deserves way more subscribers than he has
I think traditional Chinese brush is made of wolf or goat hair. And it's usually not as thick if used for writing a book. Also when writing a book, the brush won't be pushed that deep.
3:20 holy shit you found a weeb!!
lol
Lol I was gonna comment that but then I saw yours (:
Considering the tons of American cultural pieces in his home, he is not denouncing his culture to become "Japanese". Also, he is not attempting to learn Japanese culture through Anime or Manga, so he is not a weeb in that sense either. I think he just wanted to learn Caligraphy and decided to go to its earliest roots.
Rhett Having a Vietnam Flashback, It was just a joke dude.
I realise, but I just feel bad for people who probably think they're being made fun of because of their passions.
So here we are, the hidden treasures of the world wide web! Love it, thanks for this!
This is a brilliant channel.
Just use red beet mollasses for ink, with a corn starch thickener, or charcoal mixed crushed fine as flower
The bit with the brush hurt a little. You never ever cut a brush. The only way it will give a precise stroke is if it still has the natural tip of the hair and the ink/paint is able to travel down the hair towards the tip. A cut hair results in a flat edge that can't transfer the ink properly. You will end up with a total mess if you actually try to write anything with it, as all the ends just spread and scratch over the paper.
Seeing that brushmaking is an actual craft still practiced by hand today, it really shouldn't have been hard to put a little more reseach in.
Pokeweed berries for ink I made it myself and it worked really well
I'm new to the channel but I think it would be great to see what it would take to make some Starbucks drinks from scratch. Like having to grow the coffee and roast and then the cream for whip cream and sugar and flavors. I think it would be interesting to show how expensive it would be compared to how commercial methods can make things less expensive.
Cool! This book series has given me some ideas!
Easy way to make a quill is pluck a birds feather then melt down some metal next quickly dip the tip of the feather into the melted metal and set it on to dry. See very simple.
A very high quality video
I don't quite understand why you have so less subscribers
This is the most informative content on RUclips I'm looking forward for you're new video
Pencil lead is made from graphite and clay. Fun fact, an ex Napolean soldier first used clay and water in pencil lead to change the lightness or darkness of the residue left behind. Also, in 1564 a mine was discovered in Britshland full of coal and graphite. People wrote with this, but it kept breaking. As a result, people started rapping string around the actual writing material and eventually wooden tubes to hold it. In case you haven't picked it up yet, I know the history of pencils, (Edit) and there's way more history that I didn't spill yet.
You can make glue by just boiling cornstarch, it would be interesting to see how cornstarch is made.
everything is left over from that goddamn suit!
@How to make everything Sir, please try to de-bark, straighten your branches/twigs because they look "Too natural". The fact people in the past used to do that would make it look more better if anything. Just my thought ^^
For the cover of your book u should use the dear hide
Where have you been all my life?! Do more on how to make painting brushes. I cannot for the life of me find any hard data on this. Feather brush? Sure, but for making a Mongoose Sable with a metal Ferrule? Nada. Too many fortunes spent on those sables bro...
"Little bit of glue"
*Dumps entire piece of hair in*
You have to make a knife! I'm sorry if you find errors in the text , I do not know much English
Your English is fine.
Your English is fine. Props to you being bilingual, it takes a lot of work. Congratulations!
Аздар Чанкуров hey thats pretty good
your better than me and english is my first language
You’re English is fine, good for you being bilingual.
4:44 that writing is "cool as ice"
Ugh I love old people cookies!!!!!!!!!!
You could do a remake vid, new and improved version of just the ink brush using an expert brush maker, one who does this every day to teach you the advanced techniques that you may not have thought about...from a inexperienced, mediocre project to a highly refined, artisan product. That would be cool to see!
İ respect you so much about all of your efforts
thank you very much at first when i watched ur videos i thought it would not be nice but when i checked its beeing cool and the thing which i need you showed me how to make i can feel you have done lots of hard work in paper making i saw maybe in other also :p
i didnt get to see you use your brush!
it's a series just watch there's what 8, 7 episodes just keep watching the videos
1:26 could’ve just de-barked the stick and used a pencil sharpener.
Actually I also studied japanese calligraphy shuuji because I’m studying here in japan and it was hard but I kinda got some good notes
You didn't even use the pencil or brush you made...
It's a part of a series. He uses them at the end, to write in the book he makes.
Another great glue is charcoal and pine sap
There are caligraphy brushes that are made from wolf's fur and i think that's the only metal thing about caligraphy
Mike seems like a very ..interesting individual
Next week, Andy makes a supercollider. :)
I feel like a charcoal pencil could be more easily made by using a cloth cover rather than inserting the charcoal into wood. Saturate a piece of fabric with glue or resin, roll the charcoal tightly inside, and let it dry and harden. Sharpen and use. This is also what I would do, as I don't have power tools and drills to use.
This channel is basically the real life version of minecraft crafting
Power drill = man + rock + foundmetal+ sandclay + wood + if you were able to make a fire = Furnace/other shapes you can do from clay = melting metals succesfully = making steel forms = whatever form of metal you can think of = cogwheels = screws = tanks = probably made his sink = with enough metal materials = wheel = propeller = tower = other metal parts = wind or water power plants = copper wire = drill
oil = in the ground = dig
3:00 was a fail
I love your shit, man. All the fucking best!!
Why did you tie the charcoal tin closed with wire lol
Also you can get cleaner sut from holding a pan over a candle. It will produce a nice clean powder
I love how nothing is wasted. You killed a deer, and you plan to use it to it’s full extent. One project is used for the next, and so on.
So how did they drill out the pencil and brush in the old days? Or was that a medieval power drill that he used?
Hi. I love your channel. I love your interests, the knowledge you bring, the editing, your posture and charisma. The execution though.... You have to work on the execution man...
1:54 - Animal Glue inc.
That’s why Elmer’s glue logo is a cow????!!!!!!!!????????? OMGGGG
does human hair work well? I'm thinking of maybe using my hair after cutting it if it gets too long as a substitute of horse hair.
Guy who invented glue: I wonder what happens when we melt this horse
A guy nearby: what
I bet that deer hide Gloo Stank!!!
When i saw the horse i thought he was going to make it into more glue!
You can improve very easy in caligraphy...but there are a lot to learn...
The easy road to fine coal powder is collecting soot from a smoky flame
2:13 lmao 😂
the horse parts makes it look like he was making a potion tbh
17 years of practise for that. his looks almost as good and he hasnt even done it for more than a hour
Who else thought when he went up to the horse he was going to use it to make glue 😂
How do you made that powder drill?
Monsieur PussyCat ask primitive technology
WOAH WOAH WOAH, HAVE I BEEN LIED TOO? 4:40 THIS CHINESE CALLIGRAPHER CAME TO OUR SCHOOL AND TAUGHT US THAT SYMBOL AND SAID IT WAS CHINESE BUT THIS GUY IS A JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHER, IDK WHAT TO DOO ANYMOREEEE
Cringe Master It means eternal in both Japanese and Chinese
Japanese isn't a logography (linguist talk for "picture writing") it's a slyabary (more linguist talk every symbol is this "consenent vowel") he just made a mistake i think.
Cringe Master I thought it was just Japanese kanji (Chinese characters put into Japanese language)
oh okay 😂
Japan uses the Chinese alphabet (kanji) in combination with their own characters (hiragana and katakana).
Kanji is used to:
-Shorten words
Despite common belief, Japanese symbols (characters) do not form full words. their characters represent sounds (like "go", "ka" "shi" or "wa").
There are some exceptions where words are very short. like "go" (five) that can be written in one character, even in hiragana. which is their easiest script.
-Emphasize contextual meaning
some Japanese words have more than 20 different meanings depending on the context used. for example, "omou" directly translates to "to think". but is also used to describe most actions where thought is primarily used (things like dreaming, deciding, hoping, etc.)
-Write names
This way names that are pronounced the same can have a different meaning. much like how other words have multiple interpretations.
There might be more reasons they use it. but these are all that I know from the top of my head. (and I can't be bothered to google it)
Also, sorry if my English isn't that great. it's not my first language.
How would you hollow out a stick without the drill?
4:39 half life logo and 3 dots does this mean something? are you predicting the future?
Your videos are very well made and super interesting. I think what is holding you back from becoming a popular channel though is your dullness
I shared this to all my friends in gmail
🙌🏼
2:20 I see that sleight of hand there.
I need to see this guy survive in the woods for a week.
Mike is a savage
4:55 I see a guitar and I see a new episode
Brush writing should practice again and again
It not only improve your writing skills but also lets you live in peace
I have made a brush for art class
The ink would probably be better (thicker, less chunky) if you used carbon black instead of crushed charcoal.
I'm curious, is horse hair the ideal type to make a brush out of? What about human hair?
I believe it depends on the texture of the hair. Human hair brushes are certainly possible, but some textures are less practical than others (I've really only ever seen it be done with straight hair, presumably because curly hair wouldn't produce the best results). I don't think it's very common because most people tend to buy their paintbrushes instead of making them, but you could totally make a paintbrush out of your own hair.
“Hey, get away from my horse!”
I hope he made his own ink
what was the glue made of again?
