A slight nitpick: when the naginata was used by women, they were not samurai, but defenders of samurai/samurai lands. Because uchigatana were status symbols, those who were not samurai dealt with threats with other means, ie the naginata. These weapons regained their close connection with the samurai, due to samurai wives and other homeland caretakers taking up the polearm to defend their homes against burglars and invaders, and there were even cliques of women who would follow bushido rigourously, wielding naginata as their soul and honour. For all intents and purposes, they were samurai in all but title, as I see it, but i feel its still fair to bring up the distinction!
It was used more by yamabushi and sohei (Buddhist warrior monks). But also just regular samurai and some higher ashigaru (all pre Edo period).
@@hantu7380 yes, I'm aware. That's why I said "when it was used by women", as while i don't dismiss its prior history as a defining weapon of its era, it was used in different contexts when it was used by women
True for real... moreover naginata was a more better weapon when it had came to war and was used commonly (before Edo period if am ryt). Same goes for tachi as well, well suited for the mounted. Katana was more like a last resort self defence and later a symbol of social status
Still I am pretty sure naginata was a pole arm/spear it wasn't considered a sword. My nitpick is more that than the users

The katana is maybe a uchigatana. Uchigatana's size is short more than ootachi and tachi. But long size more than wakizashi and tantou. Tantou is the shortes katana. The meaning of katana is sword. Sorry for my bad english...

The tachi would actually be used by samurai more during wars and battles because it had a stronger blade and was more elaborate to use than the katana.
and tbh I don't know that the actual samurai even had "katanas" as we know them today but other similar swords like the tachi and the straight sword.
The second one was actually the most used weapon in Japan the katana was only a secondary weapon mostly used as a status symbol

Just buy a color coated sword, the handle of the "real one" is like a light saber, on the round-ish side, no bueno for edge alignment, and the saya/ scabbard is probably illegal to replicate 100%, i live for the memes, and to make my gears fully solid, but there's limits to our current tech

Naginata we’re not primarily used by women… they were mainly used on the Battlefield for a substantial amount of time by samurai and then later, in peaceful times were used more often as home defense by women when the men were away.

Tachi lore breakdown: the Tachi was used before the uchigatana (what we would call katanas today) was made, samurai use the Tachi on calvary on horseback along with their bow, the yumi in 700 AD to 1185. they were longer, pointier, had more of a curve to its shape, and was worn by the samurai from the belt, cutting side down. They switched to uchigatanas as a daily carry along with a wakizashi, but was still in use on the battlefield.

I wouldn't call a naginata a sword, it would fall into the "polearm" category.
Zanka no tachi
A tachi is not longer than a katana. Is the anche story of the katana. Eventually can have a slightly more curved blade, and a weight more forward for a primary use at horse (but as the katana different period and blacksmith will have different curve and weight distribution of the blade) anyway the primarily difference is that the tachi has a different saya to fix the sword on the thigh, and have the blade facing downwards. Also the data of the sword impressed on the tang were on the right side. Katana have the blade up, a different saya that was for wearing the sword on the hip in the belt, and the data of the sword impressed on the left side of the tang (nakago). A longer version of the katana can be a Okatana, and same side for the tachi a otachi.
