I installed this shifter last weekend and I'm having an issue where the shifter is popping out of gear really badly in first and especially in reverse gear (yesterday it popped out ~10 times before I could get it to stick long enough to reverse). Any suggestions on what could be causing that issue?
Hello, It sounds like a misadjusted cable, no big deal. Send an e-mail to the vendor with a photo of the shifter position in neutral (with shift boot removed) and he'll transfer it to me for review and help.
Because I can't find a washer that has the perfect size for less than a cent ahah. Nope, no grease anywhere, it's already greased, and the bearings are shielded :)
From me! Unfortunately, I'm currently moving so I can't make more before I settle. You can go on 986forum.com on the DIY section and search for the ball bearing shifter thread ;)
Ok cool, I found the thread. I want one so I'll check the thread periodically to see when your up and running again. Are the 996 and 986 shifter interchangeable?
Great ,realistic video. Suggest Loctite 290 on the allen screws when you have the correct adjustment
Thanks!
Since the shifter might need readjustment over time, I put them dry ;)
doctor to patient: "...this might hurt a little...".
with a wood chisel it is very easy to break the small white plastic parts (do not need to hit with a hammer)

Why do you need the "penny" as a spacer? Why didn't the new shifter come with spacers if they are needed? Do you need grease anywhere?

Don't see the point of a penny spacer when you have the allen screw to take of the adjustment slack.
Mike Yazel It’s not a Penny anymore.
It’s a stainless washer and it prevents the steel allen screw from digging into the aluminum part.
how about a sharp 1/4" chisel?
Anything sharp enough does the job.
This vidéo dates a little now. The new versions of the shifter are quite different !
It’s much easier to break the plastic clips using a razor blade and hammer, much less force required
where do I buy this kit?
From me!

Yes, 986 996 987 and 997 cars all use the same shifter base ;)
