I think this was shortly after the original producers had left the show, and the new regime had tried to inject more humour into EE to make it less 'depressing'. It was still good, but not a patch on the Dirty Den days.

Yes - the new more light-hearted stuff came in at the beginning of 1989, sets looked brighter as well. But the grit was starting to go, slowly but surely.
