Great facility! Martial arts is many things to many different people. For some it is health and wellness, to others it is self defense, some it is cage fighting, to these talented folks it is performance. Congratulations on your building.
I don't understand why everyone is dissing the art.. It doesn't need to be effective in a fight, people just do it because they like it and their stunts look awesome anyway! I like XMA!!!
I love how people are dissing what they have no idea about. Ive been doing martial arts since I was 2 and I go here now. We have the best of the best training us. People are trained here for movies, they dont just choose any place to train.
There are many legitimate forms of self defense, but i have seen schools all over teaching people skills that are going to get them killed against anyone who has trained across disciplines. Boxing, Kickboxing, krav maga, kajukenbo, all very good systems. MMA is not the only effective fighting, only one of the most researched because of its popularity. Thanks for the support
ATA and XMA they really use martial arts as an art i think i would love doing what i see in movies because its bad ass even if its not self defence its still very helpful because no one is going to take on any one knowing that person is doing doing XMA all in all its awesome and i my self am looking to sigh up for it
This does a very good job of explaining what XMA is. However, seeing that its actually more of a performing art while just using some martial arts moves without any practice of sparring/fighting it should be more properly called Extreme Performance Art or XPA.
True if the person had no fighting experience, but a lot of people who have only ever fought on the street eventually develop impressive combat skills through trial and error. That, and with the number of people training so-called MMA, the odds of running into someone with a decent grasp of rudimentary blocks and striking have greatly increased in recent years. Also, living where I do, you never get in a fight mano-a-mano, it's always you versus some guy and five of his friends, so skill counts!
likewise, the more I learned how to fight, the more likely I have been to settle a dispute with words rather than with my fists. One point that I think high level skill is important is the ability to subdue someone without hurting them. It's one thing to break someone's knee or knock them out, it's quite another to use technique to restrain them without doing any serious damage (I've met a couple of guys over the years with that sort of skill and was fortunate enough to train with a few.)
VERY interesting little peek. thanx for posting! my only hangup about this sorta thing is that "way" back when martial artists were learning this stuff through tournaments and pure drive, the results were a legendary mix of bronze basics with a streak of flash (Jon Valera, Mike Chat, David Douglas, etc.). It just doesn't seem as "honest" to me, as a creative art form, when there's a brand name on everything. And it really shows in the modern circuit. Eh, time will tell. Good luck, Chat!
i've never been a big fan of extreme martial arts because its always super flashy, and i used to criticize it also. I've watched many do it, and i've been in martial arts for about 15 years. You're right, they could do damage with these skills, do i think its a "vast improvement" over "self defense" not necessarily, and i dont think that MMA is the only effective fighting, but i do agree with you that it takes a lot of discipline and commitment to do this! anyone who sais otherwise hasnt tried.
@sammiedodgers Hi I know this comment is old but I just wanted to say a couple things. They don't show it much in here, but in the XMA classes they do do punches, kicks, blocks (which is for self defense), ect. The base of XMA is from martial arts. So you actually can learn to fight fairly good. They even tested Mike Chat's front kick and it had the force of a car crash. 1,800 pounds of force. The base is martial arts, but yes it is alot of flashy stuff too cause it's made so you can do the-
I took a break from traditional martial arts to train contemporary wushu for about a year and a half...went back to traditional, and the first time I sparred I got my ass handed to me by someone who I was taller than, faster than, stronger than, and more flexible than. If someone were to take an XMA (or wushu) athlete and give them six months of traditional training, you could turn them into a beast, but without that training they are no more dangerous than a guy with a gym membership
Chi Sao has its drawbacks (particularly how it obviates the bridging necessary to get you into close range) but like Lahp Sao it should be treating like what it is: a training framework, not a replacement for sparring. nope, it was one of the senior students at the traditional school
I'd say it does make it less practical in terms of usefulness in actual combat. Certainly less than other forms like Krav Maga. However there's nothing wrong with it being mostly for show. It serves a different purpose, that's all, so you can't look at it as if it's supposed to serve the same purpose as other martial arts. It would be more accurate to look at it more as a form of dance rather than combat-maneuvers.
JackJyls Eh, just let them. For my money, I'd rather be training this than most other forms of martial arts. As apparently, very few of them are actually useful in combat anyway. Aside from the ones like Krav Maga and Muay Thai of course. At least with this you can look cool. And even use it for something if you're an amateur filmmaker/actor.
theres difference between marital arts and gymnastics xma is a combination of both but it looks like a cooler version of gymnastics than a combative system
Omg it's the blue power ranger from lighted rescue and not to mention Ernie Reyes from tmnt 2, the blue ranger dude was also the one who got Taylor launtner into xma after karate
It shouldn't even be called Extreme Martial Arts because of the fact that they mentioned that it teaches no self-defense and no traditional curriculum. It's more of a curriculum that trains people to be great performers for fighting oriented movies or stunts. Asides from that, I am really impressed of the skill level that the people in the video have. There's practical use in what they do but its in the basic things that they can do. Also, I envy their state of the art facilities haha.
Almost everyone at that studio does it show off cool tricks that you would see in a movie about half of them ( the adults) are stunt doubles or are currently auditioning for tv.
@sammiedodgers The word "Martial" actually means military. These people are all traditional martial artist first and then learn the flips and acrobatics to incorporate. I promise you they are able to defend themselves. Besides the #1 goal in Martial Arts is to avoid conflict in the first place. That is why they instill the leadership life skills they do.
@LordThranduil234 True. but as far as i kno traditional TKD was not intended to look cool and flashy. TKD was actually used in Korean millitary. But then they made sports TKD.
I can think of one practical use for this art in a real fight, maybe if you show off your flashy moves itll intimidate your opponent into not wanting to fight you anymore :D
@aacwood1 I do more or less agree with you. However XMA is more of a performing art then an actuall martial art. Im not saying it isn't one but its just that focuses more on style and flashier movements then actual form. I have been trained in karate and kung fu(but for kung fu only about a monht or 2) and currently in Tae kwon do and XMA appears to be extremely different than anything else. But I could be wrong.
does any one know where in england uk chloe bruce stuided xma xtreme martial art i don,t see any clubs in essex or any where .so does any one where she trained in XMA
I think there are different types. I prefer the word martial arts, but the word "art" must come from something. Look at tai chi. Although it does have combat, they still consider the exercise version a martial art. Besides, XMA still uses techniques based on combat.
I do remember those kids performing on ESPN many years ago. I thought their outfits were like modern day ninjutsu uniforms or something. What happened to that show? I know it takes some crazy skills, like capoeira and tae kwon do combined.
I'm being totally honest. I had only stepped away from traditional for a bit over a year and I totally got my ass kicked. It was embarrassing. The fact of the matter is that unless you train techniques with a training partner, working through how they would actually be applied, they are going to be worse than ineffective, they will get you into trouble. Also, not sparring (or push hands, or chi sau...) you will lose the abilities to read body language and to judge spacing.
haha yes we are Martial artist..we have them for are basics, and we do a lot of old school martial arts!! this is martial arts and gymnastics together! a lot of the big moves like 540kicks and 720kicks...are martial arts..just way better then the basics.
WOw you should bring that school to venezuela, to my is really hard to learn all that, here almoust no one knos that kind of stunts. Just traditional martial arts.
the point of xma is just a fun way to get in shape and just burn pounds off of yur body with out having to buy all those workout tapes and having one on one support
@sammiedodgers But at least they are staying active and not just playing Street Fighter and Tekken. They still show confidence, physical ability, and a healthy activity.
Wrong, it LOOKS like that however not having the basic kicking skills you can not pull some of the higher level techs, though it is not defense based it is still bound from the self defense techniques
@sammiedodgers disciplne? commitment? are you serious? have you ever tried to learn a 540 roundhouse? martial arts? of course it is. any one of these students could maim or kill using the physical prowess that they gain. i feel that this is a vast improvement over "self defense" courses taught all over the country. If they wanted to learn effective fighting, they should be in MMA.Why not just let them enjoy their acheivement without critiscm of their art
It takes a tremendous amount of discipline and commitment to be a gymnast. The point is, in the end you'll be a great gymnast, not a fighter. This is for show. There is nothing wrong with that, but let's not confuse it with actual martial training.
@ravenmartinesquire kinda reminds me of that episode of proud family where they want to learn martial arts, and go to the traditional Karate dojo but didn't like it cuz it took time and discipline to get a black belt. so they go to this fancey martial arts actor dojo, so they could look cool doing martial arts and all the stunts and stuff, losing sight of what it's really about.
To say those guys are still lethal is very much incorrect. I'm not trying to bust on you about it, but when people train just for tournament stuff (which is becoming all the more common) they generally aren't getting a traditional, combat-oriented foundation. Also, training martial arts is like paddling a canoe upriver. If you stop training, you don't stay where you're at, you start to head backwards, dig?
you do know that xma is maily wushu and tkd aint for fighting and karate is art that dosent show much show off but muay thai and karate is the best thing you can use in street.
sumo and wrestling is the best martial arts. while they're doing the turning aerial kick the wrestler will simply catch them and crush em like flies. If they're doing those moves while being as big as big show then they're the best
ok so first off the skill it takes to do this is very high and it is just another side of martial arts not many people who do this claim to be amazing fighters and the people who do most likely have a background in a more traditional self defense style. this is just more of a sport.
@sammiedodgers I agree most of the truly effective techniques are very subtle and sometimes ugly looking but always effective. This video is really just a new form of gymnastics. I agree these people are not true martial artists.
The purpose is to defend yourself, to help better others and country. NOT to get giant egos about who is gonna bust who up in a preset fight that you might train specifically for. Lets not forget most monks practiced MA for the benefit of staying fit. MMA is based in traditional MA but my point is alot of these guys steal from others, i say steal because they go learn how to do a move or learn a concept then just leave taking no tradition or value with them.
its really insane how much this sport has progressed in the past 15 years. The skill level out there now is inhuman
Great facility!

Thanks for coming to Vegas Mike!!!!!

Haha, i took state champion for XMA weapons and Open hand for ohio in 2009. I LOVE Xma, its soooo much fun.
2:47 sword move looked so cool
ATA and XMA they really use martial arts as an art i think i would love doing what i see in movies because its bad ass even if its not self defence its still very helpful because no one is going to take on any one knowing that person is doing doing XMA
all in all its awesome and i my self am looking to sigh up for it

The show airs once a year on ESPN, its the US OPEN ISKA CHAMPIONSHIPS, in Orlando Florida, they air it like twice a year on ESPN2.
same here ive been doin tradiional tkd for 12yrs ( since i was 4) . i wanna do xma so bad but cant find a skool. i live in NY 2:)

your completely right, but its still one of the most fun things possible, i do xma and ninjitsu (the stuff that does work on the streets)
AMAZING! Move it to the UK - please!
i've never been a big fan of extreme martial arts because its always super flashy, and i used to criticize it also. I've watched many do it, and i've been in martial arts for about 15 years. Can you tell me when it airs this year? I've given up looking for it about 5 years ago.

Oh my God. Amazing. I wish I could do all that. My older brother does stuff like this but he's too busy. TEACH ME!
question: i do karate & tricking is that enough to join xma???? plzz answer
do you now were they are in the states?
1. Song in video?? Somebody know help me?? Thx
Yeah I know, I wasn't saying it wasn't practical, I was replying to a guy who said it wasn't practical.
PS I do XMA myself - it's awesome!
Is that school still in n. Hollywood?
If you don't use your art's kata in a fight, what do you use instead?
What is wrong with some people, just because it's aimed more at performance than self defence doesn't make it any less practical or valid
I'd say it does make it less practical in terms of usefulness in actual combat. Certainly less than other forms like Krav Maga.

WolfieboyMachi Yet these commentors are still belittling the practitioners
JackJyls

i couldnt find any videos of your silva guy
theres difference between marital arts and gymnastics xma is a combination of both but it looks like a cooler version of gymnastics than a combative system
I wish we have this here in Brazil. Guess Im going to LA :)
You don't want to go to L. A
Omg it's the blue power ranger from lighted rescue and not to mention Ernie Reyes from tmnt 2, the blue ranger dude was also the one who got Taylor launtner into xma after karate
do you guys have any xma training gyms in STL or the surrounding suburbs? if not do you know of any good schools that teach xma here?
THANK YOU!!!
i wish estonia would have xma school id really want to learn it.
Listen to this guy people, listen to him, its as simple as what he says.
Really want to do XMA!! Are there any schools in VA??

does anyone know what that sweet twist was at t=2m50s ??
Almost everyone at that studio does it show off cool tricks that you would see in a movie about half of them ( the adults) are stunt doubles or are currently auditioning for tv.
HELLA SICK!!!!! he was A POWER RANGER!!!
He even says there is no self defense aspects.
I'm really tripped out by the uniforms, they look like something from a b-rate sci-fi movie
These guys would be a treat to any serious muay-thai figther :D
where is XMA is there a school in NewYork
aight, what season though?
It's really cool and all, but I'd like to see them do all that stuff without trampolenes. and spring floors.
They do dumb*ss
@LordThranduil234 True. but as far as i kno traditional TKD was not intended to look cool and flashy. TKD was actually used in Korean millitary. But then they made sports TKD.

If any of those people hit you with there bow staff you would be out
XMA has done everything it can to distroy what Bruce Lee broght into the Martial Arts world
1:35 how do you do it? join a karate and gymnastics class
i wish my karate school looked like that, we can barley use boe staffs because the ceilings are to low
@aacwood1 I do more or less agree with you. However XMA is more of a performing art then an actuall martial art. trust me alot of fighting spirit is shown in hard training for years
I saw Taylor...so want to do XMA :)
last time i saw ernie reyes jr was on ninja turtles and surf ninjas. lol
get one of these in glasgow in scotland :D
@brooklindax John Sharkey trained all of them.
I'm being totally honest. I had only stepped away from traditional for a bit over a year and I totally got my ass kicked. It was embarrassing.

@madeintheusaclan i havent filmed anything i can do, and not sure how you know wich person is me in the video. and all those vids are years old soo.
Is Gymkata on the syllabus here? Asking for a friend
Who was the dude in power rangers?
haha yes we are Martial artist..we have them for are basics, and we do a lot of old school martial arts!! this is martial arts and gymnastics together! a lot of the big moves like 540kicks and 720kicks...are martial arts..just way better then the basics.
What did he do in power rangers i don't recognize him
Love XMA... want to find someone in the UK to help open a club at Loughborough University.
WOw you should bring that school to venezuela, to my is really hard to learn all that, here almoust no one knos that kind of stunts. Just traditional martial arts.

that's like the perfect tricking gym

Wow the blue power ranger. Cool. Taylor's trainer.
@sammiedodgers But at least they are staying active and not just playing Street Fighter and Tekken. They still show confidence, physical ability, and a healthy activity.
Looks nice but I doubt it would work in the ring or on the street.
its pretty much like wushu right? flips and cool lookin kicks.
Wrong, it LOOKS like that however not having the basic kicking skills you can not pull some of the higher level techs, though it is not defense based it is still bound from the self defense techniques
we want this in mexico!!!

wow i never thought that the greatest sport on earth could be ruined. But this xma shit has proved me wrong
i wanna do that!
Are you saying that Mike isn't qualified??? And who are the true heroes you speak of. I'd really like to know...

Krotty + skater culture = totally rad, dudes!
MCMAP? Wushu? Maybe techniques shared from different styles, including wushu.
@sammiedodgers I agree most of the truly effective techniques are very subtle and sometimes ugly looking but always effective. This video is really just a new form of gymnastics. I agree these people are not true martial artists.

Black belt in dance.
Oh God Dammit
It's not that I'm against the concept, it's just that Mike Chat really should NOT be the one doing this.
Why can't true heroes step up?
