The thing about Sayles's films is they are so intelligent. It took me a while to appreciate him. I didn't particularly like The Return of the Secaucus 7, which was the first Sayles movie I saw, but almost every one since has hit me right between the eyes, with Lone Star and Men With Guns probably my favorites. Limbo is a great movie for one reason - the ending. It took real guts to end that movie the way he did. Great job, William J.!
Great video, well done, Bill. Sayles is one of the great independent film makers of the last few decades, yet you never hear much about him, or his films anymore. But I first remember hearing his name when The Howling came out.
Another great piece. These short video essays are genius. You should get a long form show for these type of videos. I’ll tell you what is a goddamn American treasure...Bill Scurry
Even though I didn't care for his infamously leaked Jurassic Park IV script, Sayles is still one of my favorite filmmakers and a solid unknown talent. Matewan, Eight Men Out, Lone Star, City Of Hope, Limbo, Passion Fish and The Secret Of Roan Inish are wonderful little undiscovered gems. Almost hard to believe he got his start writing Piranha, The Howling and even Battle Beyond The Stars then again working on a Roger Corman production means you got paid.
@@amcaesar There is a bit of an explanation for why Sayles' script turned out the way it did - Spielberg who's usually involved in the writing process of his movies whether he's the director or producer was focused a little too much on The Terminal, War Of The Worlds and Munich which came out around the span of 2004 and 2005 which was when Sayles wrote his nutty draft. While it was a misfire, what big budget movie in a known franchise would you like to see Sayles tackle.
@@amcaesar Hmm no. Sorry but not sorry the box office returns of Terminator Dark Fate have permanently killed that franchise for good. Anyone touching that would be career suicide. Stay with me on this I guess but how would he do an installment of Disney's Frozen. idk I'm curious to know what you think of that.
@@burningexeter4365 I've seen both features so far, nothing would stop me from seeing a potential third. On the serious, Frozen 2 had real plot problems they tried to paper over with character. Sayles scripts don't seem to suffer from those issues.
One of the giants!
I'm glad I did all this research for the podcast!

Thank you, my friend!

Careers like his were hard to come by back in the day, and ongoing will be even more difficult to maintain.
Goddamn Right!!!!!! He is SOOOOOO underrated!!!!!!!
Excellent, glad you agree!
Wonderful video. Thank you for all this great info on a truly unique director.
Thanks for viewing, I love the chance to share the gospel of Sayles.

"I'm... not worthy. I'm just a soldier."
Got to meet John Sayles last night at his book signing for YELLOW EARTH. I am often reminded about how influential he has been on me.
keylimeproductions That is huge - consider me fully envious.

Yeah, people sleep on "Limbo" and "Passion Fish." And I'm with you on the JP IV script, it wasn't great.

@@burningexeter4365 OK, stay with me here, but I could see him delivering a good Terminator installment, especially after the last few fiascos.
