Fixing an Unresponsive Grace Digital Internet Radio

  • A quick video documenting my attempts to fix a Grace Digital WiFi Internet Radio (Model GDI-IRC600 aka the Grace Digital Mondo). The radio is a little computer with alarm clock and built-in speaker that lets you listen to Internet radio streams, Pandora, Sirius XM, and local MP3 files. Inside, I was surpised to find a modular system of components, even with a standard USB port! Replacing the motherboard battery got it going again from a dead state, but even then it continued to "lock up" until I moved the WiFi card to the rear USB port. Not sure if the problem is heat, the card itself, or the USB port. I did try swapping the power brick with one from another working radio and it made no difference.

It stopped working because November 2020 they started phasing out the older models and completed it by September 2021. If you go on their website you can request an upgrade by entering your serial number and product number.

My radio recently went dead, so I decided to check to see if there were any videos available to help me fix it. Finding this one, I went to work, pulled it apart according to your instructions and found the little 1220 battery to be virtually dead. I replaced it and the radio came back to life. Thanks for producing this video. It saved our radio.

Found it very useful... bought a Grace radio from Goodwill which, since Goodwill was continently not willing to share their WIFI password (gee, I wonder why not), there was no way to test it and low and behold, it will not connect and times out. Hopefully my model is similar and it is as simple as replacing the WIFI adapter and if not, I am out $4.50 but at least the clock still works.

Funny, I just did the same thing (paid more than $4.50, tho!). Same problem, too. But it's looking for a WEP password, and I've got WPA2 on my network. Maybe a USB to Ethernet dongle for a hard-wired connection, or maybe a firmware update will fix it. Project time!

Own a Grace Mondo. Starting Jan 2021 no more Reciva. I was unaware and reset to fact specs.
Big mistake, it caused all presets to disappear. Without resetting they still should be working.
Contacted Grace cust service in San Diego,Informed me nothing could be done to correct problem.
Was informed that Grace would allow only US customers to purchase a new radio at a 35% discount during 2022. Could buy a new Mondo elite for $130 plus taxes. Not sure if shipping is included.

Is there a way to add new presets? Like entering the stations URL through the alpha-numeric selector?

I don't think so. Looks like it is responding to ssh, so if I knew the login presumably I could log in and edit a file manually... If I ever have time to figure that out will post a follow up video.

@@penu009 Well then technically it's worthless. I won't forgive Grace Digital for not giving out the source code On their old radios like Logitech did on their squeezebox radios. It was discontinued in 2014 but the LMS server software is amazing and the radio still fully functional as it can be simply reprogrammed.
Grace Digital should be ashamed for not letting their users modify their existing radios to work without their old DNS servers.

@@penu009 that’s exactly what my radio is doing too, even though it’s very confusing it flashes the warning “not connected to the internet” so it must be flying solely with WiFi on my broadband box’s network name. Hi, Thank you for making this video. I have the same mondo model. Mine had died, like yours. I changed out the CR1220 battery and it's working again, but, the radio has to keep re-scanning for the wireless network and keeps asking to re-enter the Wifi PWd. But sometimes it will work for hours without rescanning for WIFI... I took out the WLAN card and connected it externally, like you did- it really didn't make any difference.
Question: Do you (or anyone) know what WLAN card would work best as a replacement for this Mondo's original WLAN card? I see there's a bunch of USB WLAN cards out there, just want to know how to make sure I find one that is compatible with this Mondo's motherboard?
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: Even though they turned off the Network Server (Reciva), the radio will still work fine as long as you have stations in your pre-sets. Searching for new stations will no longer work.
    Thank you,
    Jim

As you are aware of I own a Grace Internet Radio GDI-IRC7500 and nothing works because the Gateway platform changed or whatever. I would like to know if there are people out there who can make the changes needed so I can continue using my radio. I know Grace will pay you a small amount of $ for trade-ins and I'm sure they are upgrading and selling them at a so-called discount. The radio cannot find a "Gateway" so I'm stuck with a useless piece of plastic.

    • @ACBMemphis

It is really sad that this is shut down. Perhaps someone with time and talent will eventually "hack" the firmware and make it available for us to update our radios. The problem with all this "cloud stuff" is it depends on someone keeping their services running.... One thing I'm doing is voting with my pocketbook, and not purchasing another Grace Digital product. I have also switched most of my streaming to a free and open source product, Volumio, which is more technical to set up but also has the capability of casting from a phone - so as long as there's a phone app that's kept up to date I can use it. Also it is worth pointing out your Grace Digital is not totally dead, you can still copy audio files to a USB flash drive or use a UPNP server and play music from your PC.

I agree with you that Grace Digital should be ashamed of not allowing a perfectly easy way that the end user could change the settings to use another DNS server to continue using their discontinued radio. Logitech did a great job of making their discontinued SqueezeBox Radio and their LMS media server open source after it discontinued in 2014 so it's users base has since flourished and all radios still perfectly fictional, in fact even better. The Logitech SqueezeBox Radio is far superior to the now (worthless paperweight) Grace Digital. And I own both radios. The Logitech runs perfectly the other Grace Digital is now a useless paperweight. Like you I to will never buy another GD-Radio again. Shame on Grace Digital.

The original 3rd party internet radio station finding network used by our legacy internet radios is planning to shutting down. This will affect all Grace Digital internet radios manufactured between the years of 2007 and 2017. The managed shut down will begin on November 21st, 2020.

Yes, I saw that article on their Web site. I assume this only affects the Internet radio directory, and the built-in apps (Pandora etc) will still work. Of course, UPNP to local files will still work... The UPNP software I use on my PC (foobar2000) has the ability to do live stream capture, so should be able to push a lot of different types of content to it. Thanks for watching!
