Using a Squeezebox Radio Without Logitech

This is a very quickly filmed video showing how you can set up your own Logitech Media Server to replace the now gone mysqueezebox.com server provided by Logitech. It's fairly straightforward, but does take you back to an earlier era of network music.
You will need to get the server software from the LMS Community page: lms-community....
    Edited to add:
Here's a link from the above page that links to the piCorePlayer project. I haven't done it myself, but it looks pretty simple: lms-community....
and again, to add this comment I've received from a member of the LMS team for more context:
"@sfred I am one of many people working on the LMS Community project. As you mentioned things have been moving quite fast with Logitech's exit.
    [...]
The LMS is now the Lyrion Music Server - so no longer named the Logitech Media Server but otherwise the same. From version 9 it will be named the Lyrion Music Server.
The documentation site is now on url lyrion(dot)org - I have to spell it out like that, else YT's robots remove comments. That has downloads, howto guides etc. The legacy wiki still there, but no longer updated; however most essential info already migrated across.
For people with problems which cannot be solved via the regular documentation then they should go to the forums which are at forums (dot)slimdevices(dot)com.
I will try and respond to the other questions which your video raised by responding to individual questions. One frequent one is people complaining that their Squeezebox Radios no longer connect via Wifi. That is a known issue with SB Radios with original firmware. Happily there is now a fix. If an SB Radio connects to the latest LMS it should be offfered an upgrade to the latest firmware which fixes those wifi issues; users may need to temporarily connect their SB Radio via a wired connection direct to their router to do that upgrade.
One thing I have learned is that the LMS Community must make more videos to explain how to do stuff. It is a great ecosystem with really talented support people - so need to get the message out."

sfred You are a life saver. I have four squeezebox radios. Have loved them, for years listening to classical music from around the world. Some favorites include WRCJ Detroit, Classique Radio France, and AZPM Tucson. Without your clear directions I would have been lost. In fact I have another internet radio on order (Grace Link Internet Radio). At this point I can return it to Amazon. Keeping my fingers crossed that the Squeezeboxes will stay connected. Listening to your voice I am thinking you are Canadian. Thank You so much for posting this video.

Thanks for the guide. But I wish there was a way to do it without requiring an always-on PC or other hardware on your network for running media server. For example, you would have to pay for a new raspberry pi, and then keep it maintained with OS updates. I wish there was an applet or some other squeezebox firmware that could communicate with and stream the internet radio stations directly.

Thankfully I stumbled upon your video while doing some research on how to revive my SqueezeBox radio. It's a shame that Logitech has shut down their servers on March 2024. I had to set up a Proxmox VM running Debian 12 ( Bookworm ) on a fixed IP address, and switched library to my VM's fixed IP address. Now it's back in business.

    #Squeezebox Radio
Hello, I used your help, I did the same step by step, except that in the Wind system... I used version 32 Bit, but I have a 64 Bit system.
Therefore, it is an alternative to our receivers. I have the same receiver as in your case, i.e. "#Squeezebox Radio"
I reset it to factory settings and connected it to the server on my laptop.
Now my locomotive has started and I can also control it from my laptop, as well as from the remote control and manually.
So I recommend this material to everyone

Hi, I can't seem to be able to download the LMS from Logitech because it requires information from the squeezebox server which obviously is down. Do you know anything about that and/or a way around it? More specifically I can download the LMS but can't install it because the connection the the mysqueezebox server is not possible.

This is the 'Information' you blasted past at about 10:00 and what we are desperate for - IP settings. My physical Squeezebox wants SO many IP settings input I need to go back to college. You did not treat this. (IP address, Subnet mask, Gateway address and DNS address - all required by the physical Squeezebox.). Thanks!

I imagine there would be security issues that would crate issues for Skytune. Also, I understand we are putting our own personal networks at risk when we run Logitec Media Server. Is that correct? Thank you again for a great video.

Does anyone know if a Vonets WiFi bridge supports WiFi 6e?
I still have a Squeezebox radio, but the old WiFi chip built in no longer connects to my WiFi 6e router. It only works via Ethernet.
In the past, I heard that the Vonets was an affordable solution to the frequent WiFi disconnect problems many Squeezebox Radio owners with newer routers were having.
My layman’s understanding was that the Vonets device was a way of bypassing the internal WiFi chip on the Squeebox, and acting like a wired Ethernet connection.
But does the Vonets support WiFi 6e routers?

A Raspberry Pi consumes around 2W when idle. Remember incandescent light bulbs … they were typically around 60W - so a Raspberry Pi on all day would use less energy than an old light bulb being on for 1 hour.

I need to test the instructions of the video but I know an elderly person was using this radio for raduos abroad and normally setting up and using apps on their smartphone is generally to much for them (i fully expect we will have the same issues when old enough with newer technologies). In similar content as here it mentionned that similar setups needed to have the computer on etc, which again is a step too far for many elderly people. So hardware worked very well after 10 years and it was really a shame and hassle to invest on an Echo dot , set it up, and find registration issues with some radios... Which in turn could present other issues to listen radios in the future... Consumerism and waste at its best, with risk to have to pay for monthly services in the future for owned hardware...

You lose the radio menu, even when you run LMS locally. You can however play all of your locally stored music. Radio stations can be added under favourites on your LMS which is a pain as you'll have to store their URLs. I really miss the radio menu which allowed you to browse per city radio stations. I guess we need to find an alternative database with all these stored URLs.
I should mention I am running an old LMS on a synology NAS. Maybe a newer version of LMS works better.

Pandora is supported. New LMS plugin - Pyrrah - Daughter of Pandora.
It is a work in progress - for example no thumbs up/down yet but it works

Well, the instructions in this video are fairly easy. You might give it a try following the steps slowly one by one. You probably won't make anything worse. Maybe you can find some geeky teenager in your area to come help you?

Logitech just abandoned the squeezebox owners. I listen to streaming services (Spotify, SiriusXM, etc.). Guess my two units are now trash. Thanks.

@@Harani66 NO, they are trash. They use to be a portable internet radio that worked where ever you could get internet access. Now they have to be married to a server computer, that has software download that is always left turned on. This video is "how to apply a band aid to make your abandoned radio partially work".

For me, this may be too complicated. The question is, can I still listen to internet radio stations as before without the computer having to be on? Or is it only local stations like on a regular radio?

    • @sfred
      @sfred  5 месяцев назад +3

I don't think either will work without setting up a server.

    • @paulwebsteruk
      @paulwebsteruk 5 месяцев назад +1

It requires an Internet connection to play any radio. For now at least, it needs a local server on your home network. It is easy to setup.

@@paulwebsterukThank you for helping us non-tech dolts. I sorta get the LMS thing now but do not understand how my SB Radio connects to the LMS. Do I hard wire my SB Radio to the computer? Or will it somehow connect to my computer through some other means. I cannot get any wifi on my SB Radio now, just red wifi image.

I have the same problem, but in my case it’s because I have a newer WiFi 6e router which I don’t think is backward compatible with the old 2.4 Ghz WiFi chip installed in Squeezebox Radio. I can now only use the radio hardwired with an Ethernet connection.
