I was as this game and most of Neath games between 1985-1992 until I started playing youth rugby and I got to say I absolutely love watching all these old videos of the greatest team ever , brings back great memories so whoever is putting these up just wanna thank you and keep them coming they are awesome NEATH NEATH NEATH!
The atmosphere at this game is better than any game you’ll see at a regional level right now. WRU need to find a way to get these kind of atmospheres back into their games
I remember this match very well and the build up to it. Can still see the Newport fan stood near me shaking his head after the second neath penalty try. Incredible crowd and noise so intense.
Newport had so much to prove after being put into the 2nd division for the inaugural league season. Neath definitely on the wane after the heights of 88-90. This was a nervous one.
Yeah, Newport were a completely different proposition once Paul Turner had rejoined them towards the end of the previous season. Many quickly followed suit and by the time this cup tie came around Newport were one of the form teams, regardless of playing in the lower division. Neath were definitely rattled in spells in the first half, and but for a couple of key players having to leave the field due to injury, there was very little between the teams.
I love the old Neath "All Blacks" Jersey, with the "Coss Patee! Is it true the Club adopted it after they beat the All blacks? Or is that just another Welsh fairytale?
This game under the old laws before the 1993 wholesale law changes that brought in the five point try, stopped mauls a turnover, and the slow but sure change in the next two decades of union to something like rugby league.
