Daniel Roy pays tribute to card cheats and con-men of times past in his debut performance at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, LA. In this performance, Daniel Roy is just 22 years old. But he has been obsessed with sleight of hand with cards since the age of 10. His specialty is the most difficult branch of card manipulation, the techniques used by professional card cheats. Already a seasoned performer, Daniel has appeared at the Smoke and Mirrors Magic Theater in Philadelphia, the Chicago Magic Lounge, and the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, Los Angeles. In 2019, he received the Milbourne Christopher award for Close-Up Magician of the Year. At the time of this performance, he was a full-time student at the University of Pennsylvania studying neurobiology.
THANKS:
None of this would have been possible without the achievements, inventions, and adventures of Canada Bill Jones, George Devol, S.W. Erdnase, Dai Vernon, and Walter Irving Scott. Huge thanks to Joe Pon, Michael Vincent, Jason England, Simon Aronson, Jason Ladanye, and Darwin Ortiz for their mentorship and guidance. Inspired by the works of Ricky Jay, Richard Turner, Jack Carpenter, Ed Marlo, Denis Behr, Juan Tamariz, Pepe Carroll, Steve Forte, and all those listed above.
CREDITS:
The stories in Three Card Monte come from Darwin Ortiz's book Gambling Scams and George Devol's autobiography Forty Years a Gambler on the Mississippi. The sequencing of the Three Card Monte routine is based on the Three Card Monte in Dai Vernon's Further Inner Secrets of Magic, Richard Turner's performances, Darwin's Three Card Monte in Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table (with a contribution by Bob Kohler), and Three Card Monte by S.W. Erdnase. The Man, The Myth, and the Legend draws inspiration and sequences from the following routines: various parts of Ricky Jay's landmark performance of his act Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants, A Gambling Routine in Handcrafted Card Magic Volume 1 by Denis Behr, The Professional in Scams and Fantasies with Cards by Darwin Ortiz, The Ultimate Card Shark in Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table, Power Play in Game Changer by Jason Ladanye, The Return of the Ultimate Cardshark in Down Under Deals by Andrew Wimhurst, and A Gambling Routine in Drawing Room Deceptions by Guy Hollingworth.
All of these works deserve the study and attention of modern card magicians and sleight-of-hand artists.
Videography by Dru Morgan.

Daniel we all know that we don’t understand this paragraph. Your attempt is noble, though. Also I’m starting to recognize individual parts of tricks after binge watching all your videos
you should try some rene lavand stories !
sounds original
Should pin this comment.
Great performance, Daniel! Your timing, delivery, scriptwriting and interaction are as solid as your card handling. Ryan Hayashi
Wow, thank you Ryan! I'm a huge fan of yours! Means a lot to hear it form you. :)
The martial arts black belt master card magic guy. :)
Daniel, this is like one of the best performances I've ever seen. Bravo! Can't believe that I watched it only now. A great series of powerful materials. Your level of audience interaction also blew me away.
Thank you so much Kim! I'm glad you enjoyed the show. I'm a big fan of your videos, too! I look forward to meeting you someday.
I agree. I was super impressed at the speechcraft too not just the dexterity.
Charisma 100
I guess Im asking randomly but does someone know a trick to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow lost the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Reuben Rex instablaster ;)
@Theo Kelvin Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Well done Daniel - superb work. Dam fine.♣️❤️♠️♦️
@michael Vincent i was literally thinking about you while watching this performance haha. Amazing.
@@kevmay1000 I was thinking exactly the same, but wow Daniel's performance.....brilliant!!!👍🏾
Wow Michael showing up to give credit. You are my favorite magician sir! Daniel is an exceptional talent and this a great performance!
I read this comment in your accent, Michael then proceeded to laugh my ass off.
*Standing ovation from the RUclips comment section*
Daniel is amazing. The history lesson just adds more to his show.
Same. Sorry to bring up age, but as a young man, he sure remembers all this history understand it and then performs it with all his charm. Great talent. Some magic tricks are ordinary videos and I never finish the video. This one I did watch the whole thing. I think I know why todays dealers shuffle downward for a few seconds to prevent player favouritism towards the end. Stay Well
This guy is really underestimated. Literaly the best deck manipulation I have ever seen and at such a young age. That's insanely impressive.
That was an incredible performance. Amazing tricks and skill - but I'm equally impressed with your charisma and ability to improv and control the room
thanks :)
On top of your mind boggling skill in slight of hand you absolutely just capture the audience and make sure they're hanging on your every word. You just OOZE intelligence, competence and confidence! My god you're good.
He not only has high dexterity points. He also leveled charisma to the max holy moly
he oozes arrogance
The card skills are impressive, but honestly the humor is what makes this such an impressive routine.
I learned so much about the history of card manipulation in this act and that is something that is priceless. I guess I owe 150k
I'm half way through the video and already blown away. How could you be so good at that age?? I mean... the magic and the performance itself... You think very fast, you're funny and so confident... Wow.
As a long follower of close up magic, watching Ricky Jay and The Professor...I can truly say you are following in their footsteps and wearing their shoes. Awesome. That is the greatest compliment I can give you. Take care.
Holy Moly. I couldn't read a prepared script in twice the time, much less deal cards.
I played fiddle & violin in bands and orchestras for five decades. I imagine I spent as much time practicing the fiddle as he has spent learning to control the cards and make it seem utterly effortless. Beautiful work, and his "talk" adds tremendously to the fun. Thank you.
This is the best magic castle show I’ve ever seen. One of your subscribers from UAE🔥🔥🔥🔥
3 card monte was one of the very first card routines I learned as a magician, and this video brought back some wonderful, money earning, memories. Amazing performance Mr. Daniel, you are one of the best slight of hand magicians out there!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Allan hello coulg you please upload a Three Card Monte routine in your Channel ! please let us know how you perform it
Some serious Ricky Jay vibes here, and some disgusting card work - just amazing.
Riffle stacking takes serious practice and even when knowing how it’s done the task is daunting in front of an audience… a true technician of the craft to be appreciated
Wonderfull stuff, I really enjoyed the show.
Great personality and good audience management + great magic!
Such a pleasure to watch you perform! Thank you for sharing this.
I think this is the best performance of three-card monte I've yet seen. And it's surely the most entertaining; Jesse was the perfect foil!
Jesse was the perfect misdirection!
This Daniel kid has a real future in molecular biology!
It's worth watching just for that special look Jessie gave...Wow!!
Jessie was the real star of this show... Daniel is cool enough to admit it. lol
Not only good sleight of hands but very good entertainment. Love your work !
Love that you used the erdnase change on the 4 aces!!!
you explained some of your slight of hand tricks and I still can notice them even when looking for them in your big reveals. that's incredible
Man I could only dream of centre dealing, but this guy is one of the best false dealers I’ve ever seen. He’s the real deal (no pun). The genuine article. I practiced and practiced and practice when I was his age but he’s in a different league, like Federer is to tennis. Erdnase, Vernon, Rayleigh all the legends, all the sleights. So cool.
The thing that makes this so good is you are kinda telling people how to do it....but you are also letting them know how hard it is and takes years of practise. Nice one Daniel I really enjoyed that.
dude, what a finale. that was great
Let’s give it up to the real star of the show!!! JESSE IS SMOKIN
Absolutely! I couldn't keep my eyes off her throughout the whole performance.
I don't think they allow smoking in the magic castle.
Hear hear! 😂
AMAZING piece of magic, entertainment, audience engagement.....simply Brilliant!!! 👍🏾
That toss on 3:30 makes total difference, incredible how few hand tricks can perform a very good magic trick
U killed this performance daniel
Never would have guessed that was your first time performing at the Castle- well done, a true pro!
The way he controls the deck from the beginning on, throughout the whole performance, just blows my mind
Your crowd interaction and sense of humor were great.
I absolutely love the atmosphere here! Really good slight of hand and performance
Dude, the way you work with the audience! Awesome job!
This was a fantastic performance, mate. I can see some of your influences in the patter and banter and other nuances of some of the more modern card magicians. Especially Ricky Jay and Michael Vincent, two amazing magicians whom I admire like you do.
We are witnessing the birth of a new giant of card magic! Amazing routine!
Really very good slight of hand! I'm never going to play Cards with you! I lose everything!
That was great .
All in one take ... impressive.
Phenomenal. Brilliant performance and I loved the vibe over there at the Magic Castle.
Its not only the skill that's godly great, but the delivery of this performance is so smoove...
Simply wonderful and endlessly entertaining. I'm glad I have discovered your channel!
Glad you enjoy it!
They paid 1$ and learned not to play 3 card monte. Good deal for them :)
That was thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you.
Stunning! Thank you for the video
24:15 Legends say she's Still waiting for him to sign the box.
Great work Daniel.
I can see so many influences there (Ortiz, Ladanye, Jay) but you made it your own. Structure was awesome and the progression was superb. Subscribed & new fan. 👍
Fantastic job! Great atmosphere, tons of laughs, that's what entertainment is!
This was a brilliant performance from top to bottom. Absolutely loved it.
Keep up the great work.
Not only is this performance exceptional, it is very well educational too! Really enjoyed this Daniel, subscribed!
Great job not getting distracted
Great job that was fun to watch
great command and showmanship...at such a young age!
such a lively audience
What a fabulous performance!
Man, you're awesome.
thanks!
Perfect performance! Great job Daniel!
Very good Daniel, Humor, Intelligence, Technique and sequence until the final climax, congratulations! Jorge Lisboa.
Daniel: *Sits down at a poker table*
Casino: Ah shit here we go again
I can't stop smiling. This is great
Mastery. Very entertaining. Thank you.
Oh boy! What a great show!!! :)
Wow that was awesome. I know how 3 card monte works or at least I could follow where you put the card each time. And when you tore that corner and swapped it Oo that was a great touch and how you made sure people saw you move it then you asked left/right hand and put the other corner in your pocket Oo that was just great
Great stuff, hilarious!
Bravo! Well done!!!
That was FANTASTIC!!!
You’re fabulous!
sensational performance!!!
lol when i saw you do the three card monte for the dollar bill i saw u drop the diamond card from the bottom :))
Love it 👏👏👏
Fantastic job, Daniel! Loved all of it! Bravo! :)
Good show and personality as well. 😉
I can't believe this guy turned his self insert mary sue magician fan-fic into a routine at the end /lh
But fr you're my hero
Reminds me of ricky jay especially 3:28 or darwin ortiz as well
OOOOH THAT CASUAL DL AT THE BEGINNING WAS GREAT
Incredibly Smooth!
Thd goaaaat!!!!! No one is evdn close
i've never seen a 3 card monte routine this good before
Daniel... Man... You are tooooo good!!!! 😫😫😍🙏🏼🙏🏼
I watch this video and feel like I'm watching Richard Turner or Ricky Jay early in their careers. Impressive work, Daniel!
Enjoyed your show Daniel.
Absolutely insane!!!
Nice work, Daniel!
Incredible personality!
Truly amazing skill and talent !!!
That was great, really great.
I love magic so much and I loved this.
Respect from Spain, man! That's very good work!! 👏👏👏
Great routine!
Daniel your skills are incredible! I would love to have been there 😄
Has a nice flavour of Ricky Jay running though it, great performance
This video inspires me in about 10 different ways....
I was wondering, how you get rid of the 5s. Great moves with the Ace of spades.
Amazing show! Great job from a fellow Penn student :).
Great show!
Incroyable!
I assume rather than learning from Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, etc, you learned, were inspired from Richard Turner. But so skilled so young, plus you shook hands transferring body oils and champagne glass sweat. Next Level!
Richard Turner is a big inspiration alongside Jason England, Darwin Ortiz, Steve Forte, and many others (see the description).
Great performance
