I just bought two of that same trap. I see what I need to do to improve them. One, put a barrier at the bottom between sides and bottom so they can't get stuck underneath. Two, either remove the bottom horizontal bars on the doors or put an aluminum skin on them so they can push them open without getting hung up in them. Except for the door that stuck open, only one crab got in. Thanks, PK. I'd never have known.
I've got the same trap and you're on the right track! I cut most of the two vertical bars at the bottom of all 4 doors because I found that occasionally they stuck into soft sand... nothing got in! So now there's maybe 1/2" of vertical bar at the bottom of the doors. The horizontal bar is fine and will help keep the door shut. The keeper crab won't be able to slide out the bottom of the doors where I modified them. I also cut 4 sections of pencil lead and zip tied them across the bottom horizontal bar of each door and that doesn't impede their entry at all but ensures the door closes abruptly and stays closed once they're in the pot.
Seems that the pot had a bit of a problem. Perhaps if you are doing short soaks the open cage may work better? I do enjoy all the underwater videos though. It shows that the old 15 minutes between pulls when snaring is too long. I learned that years ago from watching these videos and pulling up my baitless snares.
Great informative video! Obviously a very inefficient "IN" door system. This trap needs new/different "IN" door design!! Maybe just an open/ free entry "door" that closes when pulled up/lifted.
Oof, weight those doors with pencil lead, clip the tag end on the zip tie, and add some weight to the bottom of the pot. As cool as the camera view is I would try mounting the GoPro on one of the sides, sacrificing a door, so the pot sits flat on the sand. I definitely learned some things during this video.
We’re learning PK! Had that trap been sitting flat on the bottom…. Explains why my traps were catching bigger numbers even though only a few keepers with Spring crabbing. Great day either way! See you soon.
If it was that difficult to get into a restaurant, I'd tell all my friends and enemies. I have 2 of these pots, not 1 crab. Just purchased 2 collapsible pots. I'll followup with the results.
I see lots of awesome observations and possible solutions posted here... I would say that these pots are just fine as long as you understand their strengths and weaknesses & with some mods, they'll out crab the super expensive pots all day. I made a comment on OregonOldTimer's comment about one modification I made on the doors. It also appeared as though a zip tie was in the way - and - I wonder if the PVC frame that holds your camera and light caused the pot to sit at a slight angle? As you know, these pots can shift easily. This is why (in addition to my door mods posted in that other comment) I have weight in the pot and I zip tie around each connection where the different sides meet (except for the one side that I use as the 'door'. I find that it keeps it's shape much better... I'll try to photograph that and send to you. I'm sorry I couldn't make it today! I am headed to the coast Thursday to try to harvest Razor Clams for the first time ever! I might also try for surf perch (also my first time with those as well). Tight lines!
Thanks for the tips, Rob. Yup, I see several room for improvements. The door being open is a problem I'll have to try and fix before crabbing season. Tight lines.
@@jsnjcnt I think a person should be posted down there to install them into prisoners gates,. clearly man wanted crabs to escape as it's not open season just yet
This is pretty useful to see how difficult it is for those crabs to even get IN the pot. They're pounding on the door, but you won't let them in. You'd be better off with an entire side wide open, and keep that side up when you haul the pot. Without the camera, how would you ever know...
I think it would be pretty easy to rig up a timer on a crab pot that shuts the door after a while. That way you could have a giant door, to let them all in.
You have to maintain legalities. Of course, a trap could be made to only catch and not let go, but that would be too easy. There wouldn't be any crabs left. The traps are designed to not be perfect.
How hilarious I'm originally from Salem but lived in Kernville a few summer's during my childhood my grandfather ran a fishing boat out of Depoe Bay before he was infamously murdered but my dad always made me have a crab measurement tool
The problem is the lower horizontal bars on the doors. I watched a similar video by The Reef Robber with a nearly identical trap. the main difference is, each door has one horizontal bar high on the door. There is no lower bar for the crabs to get hung up in. I'm going to cut out that lower bar before I go out again. ruclips.net/video/DzsTh_QsT7w/видео.html
I think a sign ,( printed bilingual, would ,( speed up the raiders. I also think a solid plywoods or hardyboard bottom would help them get better traction! But mostly swing trap doors which are very easily operated ,this trap needs to go back to NASA,,. It's terrible
wow you can really see the problems with this design, as I suspected. The doors get jammed open easily, and when they're down, they tend to tangle with the crab instead of letting the crab in. Total junk, really. Time to try a better design
Having the PVC camera holder beneath the pot compounded the difficulty for them to go in, and they're obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed. Going "up" before "in" seemed to be too great of a problem for them to solve.
And on another note something that costs so much is not very smart at all. I think I could make a better crab trap out of something you would never think of…
That trap will insure the bait lasts a long time, and keeps those pesky crabs out
Interesting, designed to be hard to get in to prolong the bait. What if all the crabs get in right away, at sametime, isn't that better?
Lol good one. The crabs need a sign saying go in here. This way. Lol. Stupid crabs get in here.
this is probably the most frustrating crab pot video I’ve ever seen
clearly not the best trap design in the world
Ho is doing what
They only accept smart crab... Dumb crabs are useless
Came here to say this. Terrible!
Caught 1 crab. Dinner time. Hope your not hungry.
Fished lobster abd crab for 30 plus years would have starved with traps like this😢
Man that's some slow crabbing! Maybe putting the gopro mount on top of the cage might be better so that the cage is flat to the bottom.
Seem to have some door issues, i absolutely love these videos!!!!
Always a terrific show PK! That underwater video is so crystal clear for the soupy conditions!
Great footage of what actual happens when crabbing. Tight lines.
That trap sorry to say is a POS. if it had worked you would of had over 15 crabs in there .
Is this to keep the crabs 🦀 out 😂😂😂

I thought the two fixes would be to first throw that trap away, and second, buy a better trap.
Checked my pots today. The doors have only one horizontal bar, but my older trap has two. I'll cut the bottom one out of that one.

4:42 was that sneaky one a krill?
The crabs need signs and arrows. This way crabs. Get in here you stupid crabs. Lol.

Had fun out there, Barry. Can't wait till crabbing season!
nice! but like kevin said, few seemed to have easily escaped, but great video! i think the last few looked like keepers!
thank you PK
The important lesson is, the drift material goes toward where the crabs crawled from.
Looks like you found a good place to put a shrimp trap.
Sick footage!
Bad trap or smart crabs?
PK, the crab were where the light is. Lots of crab but could not enter the trap.
If it was that difficult to get into a restaurant, I'd tell all my friends and enemies. I have 2 of these pots, not 1 crab. Just purchased 2 collapsible pots. I'll followup with the results.
Is it upside down ? There were alot of crabs but could nt get jn
Awesome, a trap that only catches " freakin genius " crabs and keeps the other 98% of stupid crabs out !!! :)
Yeah, I was thinking that we probably keep the crab population stupid because only the smart ones figure out how to get the food.
I see lots of awesome observations and possible solutions posted here...

@@oregonlife You think a trap door/one way door would work? Maybe plexiglass? So they can see the bait and go through but not get out?

@@barrierastiss8877 lol yeah I will follow you. Lol
@@barrierastiss8877 I don't think that is the case here. Why go through all the trouble? Come on man. Really. If your serious idk.
Man this was giving me anxiety
Why make it so hard for them to get into the trap???? Makes no sense.
He's just teasing them.
I believe it was upside down. The circle holes should be at the bottom. And bait at the top of the cage.
It's a wonder crabs ever get caught.

The day that the crab couldn’t figure out their backside from last Tuesday lol
It was like watching The Three Stooges try to climb into a window.

Should have a ramp up to the entrance. Would they be smart enough to elevate themselves upon exit ? They look pretty stupid but definitely persistent.
Is that a boat motor we are hearing or something else?
What is the motor noise? Sub drone ???
Do crabs not have good eyesight?
How are the crabs 🦀 supposed to enter your trap
Wow that was fast
Imagine if the way in was easier
I get it now. They are so exhausted after working their way in they just say screw trying to get out. ITS TOO HARD!
Need more entries that r a tad higher up.
A crabby operator ,if ya axing me
Caught 1 crab. Dinner time. Hope your not hungry. Lol cool video though.
Open up some slots and attach gutter guard hanging down from top of slot, to easy
is it really supposed to be that difficult for the crabs to get in?
How deep is the crap trap( Ocean - dept)???
About 13 foot of water inside a bay.
Odd that a TRAP out a crab feeding station.
WAAAY to hard to get in, WAAAY to easy to get out!
The look of disappointment was real.
Ahhhh...crab to fisherman "do you want to catch me or not? Wtf?"
That ain't much of a trap because it is not trapping anything.. all it's doing is pissing me and the crabs off!!
A lot of ( shrimp) there!( Where is this?? Pacific Ocean , Cold water?
the design of the crab trap has problem, it keeps the larger crabs from entering the trap.
Door right door was stuck open
Those aren't crabs, those are pigs w/ 8 legs.....
Watching crabs fail to get in the giant open door was very frustrating... Please film smarter crabs
Just like "Walking Dead"..

The door needs improvement.
They just can't get in and once they do they want back out,all motel (6,s suck, maybe a Holiday inn Express

Door stuck open, feeding program going on
This makes me want to not eat crab and go feed them instead.
wow you can really see the problems with this design, as I suspected. The doors get jammed open easily, and when they're down, they tend to tangle with the crab instead of letting the crab in. Total junk, really. Time to try a better design
Not much of a "trap". Seemed it was easier for them to exit than get in.

The white thing making it to high
Hopefully this was for research and design because holy crap what a terrible trap
