- Within the Imperial retreat of the great palace of Tsarskoe Selo, near St. Petersburg, is Alexander Palace, the residence of the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II and his family.
The graceful Neoclassical building was commissioned by Catherine the Great for her favourite grandson, the future emperor Alexander I of Russia and was built between 1792-1796 by the renowned Italian architect, Giacomo Quarenghi. Upon becoming Tsar, Alexander gave the palace to his brother, the future Nicholas I as a summer retreat. From this time onwards it became the summer residence of the heir to the throne.
Following the Bloody Sunday demonstration in 1905, Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra made the palace their permanent family residence as they considered St. Petersburg, too "political". The Tsar had the palace wired for electricity and installed a telephone system.
Through the years of war and revolution, the walls of the palace sheltered the Imperial Family, isolating them from the turbulent outside world. When he abdicated the throne in March 1917, he was held under house arrest and confined to a few rooms of the palace under the gaze of armed guards until being sent into exile with the rest of his family.
The palace was then converted into a museum, remaining so until the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War in 1941. The Nazis converted the building into an SS hospital. Upon their retreat, the palace suffered heavy damage due to shell fire and abuse from the German soldiers.
After the war, the building was first handed over to the Russian Navy and subsequently became an orphanage.
Today a few of the interior rooms have been restored and once again turned into a museum.......

Dear Mr. Sutton - thank you for this lovely slideshow with such beautiful music. I am always very sad to see the photos of that beautiful family knowing what was to happen to them. This man (and his family) were living a real story of Job from the Bible - I even think he made mention of this in his lifetime and once I know to his mother. The worst that could possibly happen to them - did happen in ever decreasing degrees culminating in unthinkable horror. And yet it seems they never lost their faith in God. They must now sit in the highest level of paradise. Your testament is very touching and very appreciated. Thank you again.

I am glad you like this Alexander. I have been to Tsarkoye Selo, myself, many times in the past, but had never visited Alexander Palace. Being interested in Russian history, I really wanted to see the home of the last Tzar...... Nigel

Wow, at 2:03 I've seen that bridge in old photos. The family was not allowed to go past it after they were confined to the property after the tsar abdicated. I can even point out the spot where Tatiana sat down to rest in a couple of photos. Can't believe it's still around (though in rough shape)
.... yes, for me it was a kind of pilgrimage to see, for myself, the places the Emperor and Imperial family used to walk and relax.
I'm going there this year for a look I'm going to Peter and Paul fortress to see the tomb

Thank you April. I am pleased you enjoyed the video. Since this video has been made, the exterior of the palace has been completely restored and re-painted. At present, the interior rooms are going through a major restoration.....

The palace is closed for restoration work...hopefully that will extend to the other buildings in the imperial park...A fitting tribute to a lost world...
It could be a show stopper! The Russians should have a National Trust. I saw many beautiful restorations in England and Scotland this past summer! (2019) I guess Putin's wallet is the National Trust.

Such a shame this building has been permitted to deteriorate by the Soviets and the current rulers after it survived the atrocities committed upon it by the Nazis.

I hope that some generous soul will kick in some renovation money. Once a building becomes open to the elements the deterioration accelerates.You put together an excellent slide show with a great choice of music.

Truly! God save him and his entire family! What was pathetic about the entire story of this family is the simple but enigmatic fact that Tsar Nicholas II asked the help of the British monarchy to intercede for them before the Bolsheviks got hold of them but the request fell on deaf ears!

The reason King George V, decided to withdraw the offer of asylum to his cousin Nicholas II and his family, in consultation with the advice of his private secretary, Lord Stanfordham,. He was convinced that harbouring Europe’s most notorious autocrat at a time when the UK was erupting in worker led anti-war strikes, would only further endanger the already fragile stability of the British Monarchy.
George V had changed the name of the dynasty from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, being too German, to the more English House of Windsor in 1917 because of anti-German sentiment in the British Empire during World War I. The threat of a potential revolution erupting in the UK was all too real, and the harbouring of the Russian Imperial Family might have proven the final spark to make the British Monarchy disintegrate……
George V never forgave himself for “abandoning” Tsar Nicholas II and his family to their deaths.
With the help of George V, the children of Tsar Nicholas II could have been spared by sending them, not necessarily to the UK but to other neutral countries! I am a Filipino and we have saved a lot of lives of Russians, especially the Jews, who fled the Bolshevik Revolution! We did that even before the UN mandated creation of Israel.
George V could have secured the help of other countries! Our country, the Philippines and its leadership, never failed to help many foreigners who fled persecution from their own government! We started with the Jews. Next were the Russians. Next were the South Vietnamese, after the Vietnam War! May I venture to add North Koreans?! Our government did not allow them to stay in our small country but we secured the assistance of other countries for these victims of persecution to have a home in those countries which would accept them!
Sometimes life is as tough for people at the top as it is for people at the bottom. The expensive "stuff" doesn't matter.

Russia was not the only country that "assassinated" their monarch. We in Britain did it in the 1649 and the French in 1793..... man's inhumanity to man.

The East Wing, near the entrance gate has a small permament exhibition set up. The rooms and the exterior of the Palace, though, are still in a bad state of repair. No grand renovations are being carried out. The park is lovely for a walk around, though.... N

I think I've seen that at the moment no complete restoration of the entire complex of the Tsarskoe Selo has been done. A restoration that in my opinion should also include small things such as the children's playhouse and the former military hospital in which Tatiana and Olga served as crucians. But I think it would be useful and would bring profits to Russia should be extended to the Ropsha palace and should have been made to his temple for the low dacha, strongly damaged during World War II and demolished in 1961 before it collapsed on tourists visiting the area. Unfortunately, these things also happen in Italy, just think of the collapses of ancient Pompeii.
The palace was closed to visitors in 2014 for a major restoration. This is an ongoing process and is well on its way to fruition.
Thanks Nigel you're always very kind and expert on the subject. I hope that the restorations will also include things that you may not consider important, such as the children's playhouse in the park and the rooms that are part of the hospital where the wounded Russians of the First World War were treated. These are also related to the family of the last tsar.
They certainly haven't kept the place up. It looks like everything is falling down around their ears!

You should see the Winter Palace. Catherine the Great thought it was awful, but I think it was Sam Donaldson who provided a tour of it and it was extraordinarily beautiful.
A lot of it was damage done during the fighting in WW2 there is a lot of repair work to be done to the outer buildings.all damaged during the German occupation.

The music being played during the video is Old Church Slavonic, Izhe Cheruvimy. Cherubic Hymn in English. I thought maybe Vicnija Pamjat would be better to use, Memory Eternal,which is sung for the dead, rather than a communion hymn .
Interesting...I was just thinking how odd it is that ALL continents and cultures have structures that are aesthetic and visually appealing to most people.
Otherwise, Egyptians have structures visually appealing to Germans; Germans have structures visually appealing to the Spanish...and so on.
I've studied architecture and never before tonight realized how connected we all really are through our old buildings.

I am a great Russophile, have traveled to Russia many times. I am really interested in the last years before the Revolution...... So when I took the trip to Alexander Palace, it was a "pilgrimage" of sorts. I hope, some day, the Russian Authorities, restore the Palace fully back to its former glory..... N

There should be a movie about this.... Would ne fab if Spielberg or Mel Gibson direct it !

This is an older form of Slavonic, at the end of second verse, you sing, Pis'n pri pi vaj ju sce. The newer form would be, Pis'n prinosjasce. I was taught to pronounce as peesn pre no sya shcheh. I can read the Latanica version of Slavonic somewhat, but cannot read Cyrillic at all whithout the aid of a translator. The S and C have different sounds when the little v is above them. The little v is called a carka by some and hacek by others. Phonetic spelling Char ka Haw Check

In all probability they are original...Many of the art treasures from the Imperial palaces were saved before the Nazis could get their hands on them, either by burying them or shipping them Eastwards.

A lot of German soldiers took items from the palace as mementos but know there is a lot of it being returned to the palace by descendants .

Just finished reading The murder of the romanoves by Andrew cook.I too have been fascinated by Russian history those monarchs were living on another planet they did not have a clue how the ordinary people lived or if they really cared? All the country's wealth/opulence squandered on there own flesh and blood..people will always rise up to this type of tyranical rule!
People cannot choose the circumstances they are born into. It takes a whole lot of education and maturity to arrive at an understanding of one's lot in life. Due to lack of education "ordinary people" are usually disadvantaged in the realm of "having a clue". This does not imply that nobody including the Russian Royals didn't care about them. Those that understood and did care tried their best to live generously and as unpretentiously as possible. The Czar and his family were among these.
