Restoration of a Seiko Watch. An historically important wristwatch. This time I restore a 1970s Seiko Quartz watch with the 7546 movement. These watches are historically important as they were the very wristwatches that rocked the whole wristwatch industry back in the mid 1970s. Mass job losses resulted in Swizterland when these early Seiko watches hit the market.
I am a very big fan of these early Seiko Quartz watches. They are very nicely built and retain a lot of similarity with their immediate mechanical predecessors. It's as if the guys at Seiko just took their already successful mechanical designs and merely retro fitted a quartz power pack. The torque in the power train is much lower than a mechanical watch and this makes the going train very fine and tricky to work with.
I do almost no talking in this video and just let the action on screen tell the story

Well done Richard. Its nice to see a quartz watch being treated with such care and respect. And not just discarded . Especially in this disposable generation we live in now
En cuanto a relojería se refiere muy buen trabajo Ricardo.
Very nice. Nothing like a quartz watch for continuous accuracy, light weight on the wrist, thin case, lower price, and with this Seiko, an attractive appearance!
I’ve never watched a quartz restoration - but you got me to stay Sir. This was awesome
Still have my blue face 4004 from 1978 I bought as a teenager with my grass cutting earnings. It’s been all over the world with me, and was even lost in a friend’s couch for two years. Would love to have it restored.
I'm really impressed by the production values here Richard, you would barely think this is an amateur video of (I think) just one man. Wonderful to watch, thanks for the video & being unafraid to get your hands dirty with that watch! 😄
While I do love mechanical watches just for the "cool factor" that they tend to have, I also love the relative simplicity of a quartz watch and the fact that they just work when you need them to.
Welcome back, It’s great to see a wonderful and beautiful watch be lovingly restored to its former beauty,
Great job watching a craftsman work 🤜🏽🤛🏽
Hi Mini cooper ... good to hear from you and thanks for this feedback. I do love these vintage Seiko quartz watches. Richard
Outstanding! Looks like it just came out of the Suwa factory in Japan. Thanks for another great one Richard.
It's awesome to see so much love and care going into a quartz watch. Great work.
Been looking forward to this so much!
Great work Richard and beautiful Seiko restoration, would love to have one just like it. Plus, I absolutely love the Jazz music! Cheers.
Nice restoration 👍, in Japan (JDM version) they sold this watch with this caliber in many many many different styles and dial collers under the name Seiko TYPEII, the export models where stamped on the dial and bracelet with the SQ logo what means Seiko Quartz. The 7546 movement a very good movement most made of metal and almost no plastic love it.
Great feedback Pieter ... I am with you on this as I think these early Seiko Quartz models are really very nice indeed. Thanks for sharing sir! Richard
This is a superlative video on how to restore vintage watches. Thoroughly enjoyed the video.
I actually bought one of these in the 70's. Nice watch, even though the thought of quartz watches turns me to ashes nowadays. It had a 5-year battery, as I recall.
I have a 1980 Seiko quartz similar to that in gold. It was my high school graduation gift. Still runs.
Hi Richard. I like how you opened the caseback. Those blocks between the lugs are perfect for keeping everything steady before opening it up.
Watching your videos is always the perfect way to wind down after a long day! Beautifully done!
😎👉🏿Great looking watch and the first quartz restoration I've ever seen.
God BLESS your skill and dedication.🙏🏿
loved this thank you. i collect seiko........and have one of these knocking about. thank you for the history lesson Richard
You seem chill and honest Richard and I cannot even imagine buying a watch from some of these guys, they would make me nervous having coffee with them. Your videos portray honesty and at the end of the day that is important.
I gave this exact watch to my little brother. I couldn't find much out about it.
Great camera angels.
Wow!! It looks brand new again. I own a large watch collections and while I love my automatics, my quartz watches are the unsung hero's in my collection and keep better time. lol
Very nice work Mr. Richard. I Feel happy when I see a work like this being done. Congratulations one more time. !!!
That's one beautiful movement! It's so rare to see one quartz disassembled like that.
I own a citizen quartz from the 80s and I wonder how it looks on the inside, but I have never opened it. I suppose that it looks similar to this seiko :)
There's a great deal of snobbery aimed at quartz watches, I love mechanical and automatic movements but I also have three Elliot Brown watches which have Ronda Swiss 5 Jewel Quartz movements, the Holton Professional is an issue watch to the Special Boat Service and has the Broad Areow and a NATO issue number. I also own a Bulova Lunar Pilot which is wonderful and has Bulovas very high frequency quartz movement which is super accurate and has historical value as a movement.
Solar powered G Shocks aside I also own a Yes World Watch Version 7 which is powered by a Ronda again and has a custom.made module that means the watch is essentially the 17th C Astronomical Clock found at Durham Cathedral, it is a self contained astronomical device, simply awesome, designed and hand built.
I received a Seiko quartz back in the late 1990s when I graduated from High School. This watch is very sentimental to me. I wish I still had that watch.
My late wife borrowed my Seiko 100m quartz. It later became hers. I'm restoring it now in her honour, and your video helped me a lot. I still have her Oyster Perpetual Day/date Unisex. Thanks to watchmaker friends, I've kept it in good nick since she only wore it a few times, coz she was of being robbed. RE....
So great to see what it takes to restore a watch…A+++. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for the inside view Richard - I've been wearing a Seiko SQ 'Railroad Approved' and really helped me appreciate what's going on in the movement! Hits the indices better than watches 5x their price point and 50 years older.
Beautiful watch. Takes you back in time. And the resto work was top notch.
Fabulous result.
I was just given my mother’s Seiko. She died in 1978. She was a nurse & used it for work. My brother had it & he passed away this past October. His wife gave it to me last week. She said he took it to someone who said they were unable to repair it. I have no idea what is wrong with it but this gives me hope.
My father recently handed down one of these--i.e., same movement--that had been my grandfather's. Lovely little watch, and I am only just now appreciating the importance of the quartz revolution. They are technological marvels in a different way than a luxury watch, and worthy of their own kind of respect. Lovely video, and happy to have found you on here. Immediately subscribed to the channel!
Some nicely worded feedback Timothy. Welcome aboard. Richard
Seems like all grand dads use to have this seiko 😂😂
Great filming Richard, love the quartz movement from Seiko in that time, turned out a really nice watch . Thank you. 👏👏
Wow, my first quartz watch repair I have ever seen. I have always been told they can’t be repaired, just replace the movement. Nice job 👍
Well it's so good to see you back .thanks for your time
Hi Blenny47 Skelmanthorpe ... Thank you so much. I am focused on quality more than quantity these days so there is nearly a month between videos! Richard
Interesting to see a rebuild on a Quartz watch! I have a Vintage Pulsar V736 Quartz. I just love it. I'm a big fan of Seiko watches. I have to control myself!!! Great video!!
Lovely, Richard! Thanks, as always.
Thank you so much Angelino! Richard
Top quality video Richard👍
I love the unusual angles & macro work. The sense of anticipation as the "lucky - box" was poured out ....priceless ! A classic lovingly restored.
Hi Simon .. haha! the unusual angle is normally because it's the only one I can use and still rotate my screwdriver. Glad you liked the storytelling aspect as I put some work into that. Richard
Thank you Richard, as Always, an outstanding video. So enjoyable to watch you work.
Thank you so much To Fu! Richard
I can't believe it. My father died 16 years ago and I remember him replacing a Bulova wristwatch he bought in the early 1960's in New York with this exact same Seiko SQ watch. It's identical, he had that watch for 30 years. Unfortunately it's dead now, I tried replacing the battery but it wouldn't restart. I would love to get it repaired/restored as a momento of my late father. You did some lovely work and the watch looks fantastic now. Superb video, thank you for posting it.
Great work Richard good to see you back
that turned out to be beautiful.. Thanks for video
Amazing, makes me love those vintage seikos even more
Most excellent. Thank you Sir. :)
Beautiful job
This is just super exquisite
Quality, as always Richard 👍👍👍
congratulations I'm a fan of yours, I like your simple but effective style and how you try your hand at calibers of all types, with any type of problem, including rust. I am a hobbyist watchmaker and for my work I try to be inspired by the best.
Beautiful !
Such a satisfying watch video. I think I'll watch again!
Nice work! Always good to see a quartz being worked on.
Nice job Richard as always , you make it look so easy. Major watch looks amazing.
Regards Darren 😊
Great quality video and informative about Quartz watch ! Thank you ! 👌
Well done, beautiful restoration!
Thank you so much Frank! Richard
Beautiful watch. The dial and hands are in exceptional shape. I was expecting to see worse when the case back came off!
Great video. I have a quartz and a matching automatic. Never thought much of the quartz until now, that is some work
Lovely to watch these video's and appreciate your craftsmanship.
Thnak you so much James and thank you for taking the trouble to say so. Richard
Amazing job....I love it....
fantastic job very nice thank you so much😍😍😍
Great job and a excelent watch. Congratulations.
I’ve had a Quartz Seiko Diver on my wrist everyday since 1990 - zero issues. A new battery every 3 years and an accuracy that means I only need to adjust the time once a year.👍🙂
The Quartz version was more expensive than the automatic when new!
Hi Jimmy ... James Bond (Roger Moore) wore a 7549 Diver in For Your Eyes Only (1981). So you are in good company ! Richard
It's a very good looking watch, I have always loved Seikos
Nice work Richard, keep on keepin' on.............................
Love the jazz, on assembly 👍
Nice to see a quartz piece! Great work Richard!
Hi Russell ... I agree. I have much respect for Seiko ( セイコーをとても尊敬しています ) and especially these early quartz pieces. In fact so much respect that I am now learning the language ... which is really really hard (117 days into it so far!)! Stayed tuned for more Japanese 1970s quartz! Thanks so much for taking a moment to give this feedback! ありがとう Richard
A peach of a watch Richard, great work
My Seiko 4004 purchased in 1976 still runs great.
Since 1976 how many times you servicing the watch?
Lovely work sir!!
Just love the devices and gadgets, very cool 👍🏾
Hi nevamind68 T ... there's a special tool for pretty much everything! Great feedback. Much appreciated. Richard
Lovely video one of my favourite Seiko watches SQ 👍 thanks Richard
Thanks James... These are really nicely made watches I think and part of my aim in this video was to try and show the quality in detail. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Richard
Love your channel !
Niiiiiice 😁
Loved the reshaping of the case blade 👍
Wonderfull vídeo as usual with great production!
Thank you so much Armando! Richard
Watch ASMR! Awesome
Hi David .... tyes, I aim to 'hit the ASMR spot' so this is great feedback. Thank you. Richard
Nice work 👍
Beautiful watch face. That SQ emblem is epic.
Great job,it looks like new
I have one with the same movement 7546 that i bought when i was 15 years old ( 60 this year). It still works without any problem even the goldplating holds up ( back in those days goldplated quartz watches were fashion). I remember it was pretty expensive whereas you could pick up mechanical watches pretty cheap...
In 60 yrs how many times you servicing the watch?
@@vinaynagdev3774 In 45 years it was never serviced only a new battery every 3 years.
Seiko movements is a miracle
Good looking quartz
Wow Richard! I'm always thrilled when I see in my youtube notification list that one of your videos has been just released, I know I will find great contents inside, and this one is the proof! I've seen the yellow Invicta's box on your workbench and the gorgeous watch on your wrist (a seikomatic diashock day date, perhaps?) and I'm happy, despite the hard day at work! The care you put in protecting the watch, even one of a more "humble" origins, like the one in this video, it's a sign of the profound respect for the customer and of the care you put in your precise and very professional beautiful job! Great macros, unmatched skills and passion, I think it is the right mix for a succesful youtube channel like yours! Keep up the great work! I'd like to live near your working location, to admire you working on a watch more frequently, but I can't, i hope one day to meet you in person to thank you with my approximative English speaking dialog capabilities, for all the beautiful moments spent in watching your great videos, rich in particulars and passion. Thank you!
Hi Fabrizio ... Thank you so much sir! It makes me very happy to know that you enjoy my work and I should like to come to Italy and share some wine and nice italion food with one day. I did visit your beautiful country very often before the pandemic and hopr to do so again soon. Thank you again. Richard
@@richardperrettwatchmaker Remember to let me know when you'll come back here! It wiil be a real pleasure to meet you in person! Stay safe!
I just love these videos
Superb - editing, focus steady hand, the grand Seiko watch tour ... everything! Kudos!
I never seen like this work before thanks so much from Libya 🇱🇾
Nice video loved the old Quartz. The oldest watch I have is a 45-year-old Pioneer LCD. I know this isn't LCD but those old LCD's something about how those old things looked.
Though I have some mechanical's, I use quartz a bit more often, mostly G-Shocks with the connected engine because when cooking, it's so easy to set multiple alarms and timers just in case I forget something while at work.
Wonderful video as always. ⌚👍🏾👌😁
The best mindfulness channel ever. An extremely nice comment. Fascinating.
Hi Ove ... A very nice comment indeed and yes I strive to facilitate a degree of heightened mindfulness! Richard
So much to appreciate 👍🎩😎
The 754x is one of the best quartz movements made by anyone. Ever.
Gotta be careful putting on the circlip for the day wheel. One side of it is chamfered so you can get a screwdriver under it to pry it off. If it is put on upside down it is a pain to get off next time.
Looks like a super well made quartz watch.
Lovely.
Nice restoration
Wow, well done Richard 🤔👍.
Thank you so much John. It's great to get positive feedback so thank you for taking a moment to give it. Richard
Great work Richard well done tim
Thanks Tim! Richard
video is very nice to watch makes me want to do it myself
realy cool all the little hacks and techniques you use servicing these watches complete sevice there nice video guy!
Thanks so much Roger! Richard
Richard these vintage seiko quartz watches are great I own a few of them and recently because we here in New Zealand are in covid lockdown I have had some spare time to service a few of them including my grandmother's old seiko sq and the one she gave to me. Just working on a lovely Alba Y504 with the beautiful kanji day wheel has the same movement as the 7546, next in line is my Seiko diver 7548. Lovely work and keep well. Bruce
I like seiko watches, my first one worked great for years until it got stolen by home burglars. I bought a replacement seiko watch with a solar battery and I will have it for many years, always keeps great time.
Excelent vídeo. I have one Seiko Quartz recently restored (1985). Like the one in the video
Hi Richard it's GREAT to see such care in your repair of this lovely old Seiko Quartz it reminds me of my own Seiko 7123-7060T Quartz which I'll need to get repaired,do you still repair Quartz watches?.
Beautiful Seiko...excellent restoration work...yes, please put those jazz from the beginning...hehehe
Perfect 👌
