Ah, the joys of being a tall model railroader! At 6’5, I’m usually looking at my trains from a birdseye perspective. Filming these videos provides me with a view closer to the “ground.” Watching this episode, I noticed something looked odd about my caboose on the local. Turns out, it has been rolling around on wheels that are way too big! I changed those out immediately for the correct size.
Thank you. I appreciate you watching! Agreed- nothing like a good Crock Pot meal. I’m not sure where they’re made now. The Sedalia plant was closed and torn down a few years back.
Thank you! Yes, it’s a lot of fun. I have tried to keep things minimal and simple enough. A secondary line with some spurs is plenty enough to keep me busy!
There's so much you could add from years ago. Even the old KATY shops that were south of 20th street. I can barely remember them with most of the windows broken out before they were torn down. As kids we used to build forts with the RR ties around there. Lots of memories from back then. Have fun with your build.
Hi! It sounds like you had a lot of cool adventures over there. I lived on Prospect just north of 20th. The shops were gone by the time I was growing up in the 1980s. But, I’ve seen some old pictures of what the complex looked like. It must have been quite a place! It’s kind of sad to realize all that used to be- and now there’s barely a trace left.
You do a great job on your buildings. I especially liked the tall brick building and you did a fantastic job on the weathering of the bricks. Tom Clark
I sure appreciate that! Rival had another big plant on this same line about 40 miles away in Clinton. So, I may end up with two of Rival’s facilities before it’s all said and done. Ha.
I’m very happy to have found your RUclips channel!!! Years ago my favorite uncle lived in Sedalia, and my father and I visited his younger brother for weekends of railfaning. I’ve got pictures of the MKT train station at Sedalia, if you’d like to have them, I’d be very happy to give them to you. They could use a good home. I’m a Frisco fan and modeler myself.
Hi, William! Thanks for joining us here on the channel! Sedalia was a really cool place for railfanning back in the 80s. I spent many years of my childhood living there- hence my interest in modeling that location and the Katy. The rest of my years growing up were in the Springfield area (current home), so I have some interest in Frisco as well- though I was too young to remember it before BN took over. I’d love and appreciate any Katy-Sedalia pics you’re looking to re-home. You can reach me at mike@themaintrack.com. Thank you, William!
Love the layout. One thing I suggest for operations is depending how fast you are going possibly going a little slower and if backing up with a cars leading stoping befor the grade crossing. Not telling you just suggesting. Have a good day
Hello! Thank you for watching. I appreciate the recommendation! I agree with you about the need to go a little slower. I love that Athearn Genesis GP39-2, but it hasn’t been my favorite when it comes to super-slow speed operation. It performs much better as road unit. Those upgraded (with TCS decoders) Atlas GP40s on the local train take the cake in that department.
Thank you! I’m hoping to have enough industries completed soon to make for a decent ops session. The upcoming grain elevator project will provide a place to spot all the Tangent covered hoppers I keep buying! Ha.
The Rival Manufacturing Company structure looks fantastic. The Pikestuff kits are very versatile and can be made to replicate many modern buildings by re-configuring them. I like how you have plenty of space around the structures and it does not look crowded. Nice job on the video and layout. I just found your channel and subscribed. I look forward to following the progress on your layout.
Thank you, Thomas! I appreciate the kind words. It’s great to have you on board! The Pikestuff buildings have come in very handy over the years. I used a couple of their kits for my Sutherlands Lumberyard as well. I’m sure some more will eventually pop up on the layout eventually! -Mike
I'll be looking forward to seeing more videos from you. I love the power, but surprised to see the newest power on the local instead of a RS3m. Anyways, the M-K-T is one of my favorite roads along with the Western Pacific and the Milwaukee Road. I'm in the process of drawing up my plans for my Industrial railroad. 16 x 8 x 8. And 2 x 3 ft wide. I plan on having it set up like were distributors, contractor's, farmers, ranchers, mining and oil company order material in, our company will off load the material and use our own trucks and employees to deliver the materials. I'm also planning on having a division of HOME SHOPS for light rail car repair, Warehousing for storing material, and plant that manufacturers elliptical and septic tanks, then a cement plant that specializes in concrete ties, jersey barriers, culverts and other high way and railroad right of way materials for outbound loads. We will also ship out out bound car loads of raw salt in hoppers in covered and open, outbound sugarbeets, and out bound liquid mag chloride. The name will be the Bonneville Industrial Terminal and Transfer Co. Time era will be from early 90's up to the modern day. Locoomotive's I plan on using are and old Stewart Products? U18B that will be needed to be converted to DCC, a high hood B23-7, a rebuilt dash 7 rebuilt with a CAT powered 2,000 hp diesel engine and Dash 9 electronics, Super 7 23B, then a upgraded Super 7 23B which I'll call it a DC23B4M like its bigger siblings AC44C6Ms. Then the newest, only getting drawn up on paper will be a four axle Battery Electric Locomotive rebuilt from a retired B40-8. I don't plan on running all of them at once, it'll depend on the era.
Hi, Bradley! I appreciate you stopping in. During this timeframe, Katy’s RS3m units were kept pretty close to the yard in Parsons for switching duties. GP7s also stayed pretty close to bigger terminals- such as Parsons, KC, down in Texas, etc. So, it wouldn’t have been very common to see one of those older units up in Sedalia. Having one on my layout is simply me exercising my modeler’s license a little bit. Ha. Same with my GP7. The Sedalia local would have been normally handled by the GP40s and 39-2s. It sounds like you have an awesome layout in the works! I’d say you’ve spent a lot of thought and time on your planning- and that’s great! I have always thought the MILW was pretty interesting, though I didn’t have much exposure to it growing up. There were occasional MILW run through units on Katy trains- especially on the line south out of KC. I have been thinking about acquiring a Milwaukee unit or two for that! Be sure to keep us updated on how your layout is coming along! I always love to see what everyone is working on.
I was lucky to catch a MKT train in Sedalia at the diamond with the MP. (I am not from around here) Had a CR GP38 leading!!! That sucked. The MP had a big shop complex there at the time,,,now demolished. The depot still had an operator though. He warned us of an approaching freight. We also caught a freight working Booneville.
Hello! I do remember the MP shop complex, though it had just closed when my family moved to Sedalia. That’s kind of funny about the GP38. I actually just purchased two old Atlas CR 38s last week for a future “patch-out” project. I used to think those engines were hideous looking, and here I go making a couple for my layout. Ha. I’ll probably still keep green units in the lead most of the time!
Thank you, Chuck! That’s quite a compliment! I look forward to seeing the progress on your layout, too. I lived in the Temecula/Fallbrook area for a short time years ago and always enjoyed seeing your line around Perris and Hemet.
@@MainTrack Thanks hoping to get into this in January after retirement and finally moving into our home in Yuma, AZ. You have been able to capture a neat clean minimalist approach to scenery. Love to see your benchwork and complete layout overview, love the brackets for the lights.
I appreciate that! I’ve got an episode planned regarding the lights and other elements of the layout. Just like anything with the hobby- it has been a journey of trial and error!
Just subscribed. I really like your road. Like the scale speeds you use. I also have a lot of Rix buildings to go on my new road ( under construction ).
I appreciate that! I’m planning on an episode soon detailing how I make the roads. Rix has some great products for those of us who model modern-ish railroads. I’ve got a handful of their structures on the layout.
Awesome building! Looks really good. JTT scenery has a lot of nice products. The brick and block sheets are cheaper than other sheet styrene and I think do a better job representing the correct size of the individual blocks. Very nice layout. Just got a new subscriber.
Hi, William! I appreciate you watching and joining us! Agreed…the styrene sheets are pretty nice to work with. I had though about using Rix block sections. But, I would have had to glue a lot of them together like a puzzle to get the size I needed. Glad I found the JTT product. Thanks for the kind words about the layout!
Looks good! The grade crossings and roads look good as well. A video on your scenery work would definitely be appreciated! Are you getting any of the Athearn Katy GP38s coming this winter?
Thank you! Those are great ideas for some future episodes. I will put those on my list and look forward to creating those. Yes, I do have plans to get my hands on some of those new Athearn units! Atlas is also releasing some Katy GP40s. So, I will probably spend my train budget pretty quickly when everything finally gets released! Ha.
Hi, Mark! Could you remind me where that market was? I’ve been trying to research some of the other buildings/businesses along the tracks. I can recall some of them. I was a just a kid back then and don’t remember all of their names. I was too focused on the trains! Ha.
Excellent! Yes, I do recall that store being there. I believe the building is still standing. I am also trying to figure out the details of other businesses right around the 16th and Ohio intersection...such as just west and north of the crossing. As time marches on, fewer people are able to recall.

Great Job Mike. Love seeing what you've done. From North Arkansas to you, thanks for taking to time to make, produce and share.

excellent layout and factory kit bash !

Great job! Pretty accurate!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Very nice job on the building. Your layout is really starting to come to life. From one SW Missouri model railroader to another, good job!

Nice scenery work, looks good. Bob
I appreciate that Bob! It’s always a work in progress!
Love the work can't wait to watch the next
Thank you! I’ll keep cranking them out!
Nice work, Mike! Now for a full blown operating session!
Thanks, Dan. I am getting there. Between my Sutherland’s and Rival,

Very nice!
