Bought my first miter saw the other day, really appreciate these kind of safety tips!
It's really great to see people promoting safety in the shop! Great work mate!
84 year wood worker and you just taught me a new safety .
Don.
How old are you, 98?
@@rayleblanc7209give him a break 😂
@@rayleblanc720984, he just said it lol
@@rayleblanc7209Lmao! I was mathing that and it wasn't mathing..
@@duke1281 I started by assuming he started woodworking when he was 14.
If you look at the fixed fence on your miter saw, there are holes for mounting a temporary fence board with screws, instead of using the double-sided tape, that introduces some stickiness that takes time to clean.
Good tip on adding the sacrificial fence with double sided tape.
Where I learned we usually used speedclamps, but we also only cut small pieces on the mitre saw so nothing interfered. The tape is a good way to get around that I reckon
You could use a dead man's hand ✋️ to hold the material.
THANK YOU!!!
Love it! Can't tell you the number of times I did it the wrong way, praying all the time to not lose a finger!
This guy knows his stuff presents well
As simple as it sounds, I wish I thought of this sooner! Thanks!
Thank you! First time miter saw owner too. This was so helpful.
That's a fantastic idea. Will try that. Thanks! Cheers!
That's smart!!! Thanks man 👍👍👍👍
I’ve been using a mitre saw for 15 years and never thought of this! Thanks man!
Saving fingers...one tip at a time.... This firefighter paramedic thanks you... Stay safe, Tim
Thanks for the tip.
Great tip. Learned this one years ago, but I do forget, and always good to be reminded. God bless.
Excellent. Thank you
Absolutely GENIUS!!!!!
Dummy here. So what did you hold the piece down with? I’m new to all my dad’s power tools and am trying to learn without a blood shed. I appreciate all your hacks and jigs to keep us safe. I also watched your video about having tourniquets close by. Just in case😳. Had kick back once years ago and never forgot it.
Great tip, thank you
Thank you
Thanks!
Great idea! Thanks
Very good tip, I will do this.
Nice simple idea for y'all
Great tip! Thanks
VERY good advice.
Oh man Great tip thanks!!!
Good advice thanks
Thank you for this tip. I have seen it before but I always forget it. I am getting ready to go back out to my shop and I will definitely be doing this.
Simple and effective 👌
I Loved The lesson
I have the Bosch 12 with shop nations custom dust collection. What kind of suction is best. I have a 650 CFM
this will actually help me im doing the skirting around my house and some cutting has been sketchy
Bel lavoro ed ottimo risultato, complimenti!
Bruciare lo strato esterno dei pali non ne aumenterebbe la resistenza nel tempo? Specie per quelli interrati
Thanks man… this is how short videos should be. Quick, informative, and to the point. 💯🫡
Very nice. Safer = Faster.
I usually do those cuts with an angle grinder with the guard removed while riding a unicycle, but your way looks good too.
Don’t forget to juggle your C4!
Thanks for the advice. I have had this question and now have the answer.
Well done!
Great tip!
I was literally just doing this the other day and taping down my pieces. Thanks for the tip.
Love this!
Great video
Ha! How clever is that! Thanks amigo!
A temporary fence like that also makes it faster to line up a cut mark !
Thanks bro
Just started as a carpenter this is awesome
What’s the stick you’re using? At the end of the video to clarify? Thanks.
"Hey dummie! Don't do this!" is my 6th sense's favourite phrase when I'm woodworking! 😩😩😩
Mine gave up, YEARS ago. It just says, "this is gonna hurt", nowadays. 🤣
I used to watch this channel because he was frugal and made things with simple tools. Fast forward, he has a festool miter saw 😮
That's brilliant !!!
Hey what kind of wood is that. It looks like nougat? Asking because I have some.
Love it!‼️
I am trying simply wood work, I got a lot to learn
I have the same festool saw as you and i made a drop on tray with back fence and a swivel arm that holds the small piece of wood in place....fingers are 9 inches away from the blade and the jig is held in place with the left side hold down clamp...It takes seconds to clamp in place and use
Good tip
Hey, thank you for that tip because I do have small pieces to cut and I’ve done them without anything happening but i do need to cut smaller ones so I am using this idea from now on!🙂
Also check out the 10 Million Dollar Stick from FastCap. It helps you hold small pieces close the blade without endangering your fingers. I was using it in this video at the end.
@@731Woodworks I will do that, thanks again!
This kind of advice is golden. Simple. But could save a novice from a really bad experience.
This is some critical information to know thank you
Finally something useful
GENIUS!
Very usefull
🤯 brilliant
Thank you! I had a hobby project I stopped working on because my miter kept throwing all the small pieces across my garage for this exact reason and it would be impossible to cut all 120 pieces by hand.
That's why I like my Montgomery ward radial arm saw. It has a full fence and not a giant gap
Montgomery Ward? That has to be kind of old.
@@davidwickboldt7121/2 the audience had to Google that, I promise you. Maybe, even Matt. 😂
I wish we had someone like "Monkey Ward", today. Amazon, sure ain't it. 🤦♂️
Radial arm saws are 'old' themselves, no matter the maker. Delta, Craftsman, etc made them in the day but they're not as popular since all the hundreds of sliding, compound miter saws, and table saws out now. They are better at doing many things tho. I think the safety police may have been a part of their lack of production nowadays. 🤔🤷♂️⚠️🚫🤚
👍👌🛠️🔧🗜️📏✏️📐🔨🦺😀🍻
I get that feeling everyday
Great tip man well done 👍
Love your shirt
Good idea. I made myself a table saw sled
Or use a mitre trimmer or wood guillotine. Especially with mitred cuts. I have one, it’s the best purchase I ever made. Cut long and you can creep up on the correct cut for precision joints.
Great safety tip right there! I think we've all considered doing a dangerously small cut.
Good one brother
Good advice, Matt! 👍👊
Glad it was helpful!
@@731Woodworks Hey, I built that outdoor couch with the plans I bought from you. It looks really cool. I am not on social media, so I’m not a picture sharer, but we all love it here! 👍👊
Can't believe so many folk haven't been doing this.
Lot of miter saws have holes in the aluminum fence you can screw a temporary fence to. As well couple squeeze clamps works to. If your making super tiny cut say less than 3/4 an inch you can take a scrap piece of wood like a 1×2 or 2×2 and set it against the fence then make your cut for the super small piece. As well scrap plywood or 1×4 makes nice shims for plunge cuts and notching on the miter saw. Between the work piece and fencing. I'm an exterior door builder and I have to do all sorts of crazy things with my miter saw for the custom doors I build for customers.
Brilliant
Great tip with the double sticky tape. I need to order a roll.
Dude is literally surrounded by clamps.
What is the black pipe looking thing that looks like youre using it to hold it down too?
Good to know
It also reduces tear out.
I tend to use Piher clamp, those mothertrucker are to hold things and also to train your forearms and grip.
Great advice and you get to keep all your fingers
Such a great channel! lol
Great point. Doing it wrong for years.
Cool
Dang it, I know that I won't be remembering this great tip when I need it!
Smart.
You can also use a larger piece of wood to clamp down on the small piece. It’s the best advice I can give.
What kind of double stick tape do y'all use?
Its also a good idea to use a 3-4" board layed flat to bring the piece out more so the blade isnt pulling the piece up on the cut.
That’s why I use my Worx BladeRunner for this purpose.
Smart move. At least you’re not telling people to use a long stick to stabilize the material like some do
Where do you get that removable double-sided tape?
I do bring the blade down then line up the temporary fence to the left side of blade and spring clamp it to the original fence ! Been doing for years still have all my fingers !
What double stick tape do you use?
Well I count my blessing for the amount of times I just held it the best way I could and just close my eyes and press the button. Then I'd be playing Marco Polo with the part I just cut, having flown across the shop floor, somewhere.
I guess this is what I learned from the internet today. Thank you, kind sir.
Every human watching this who still has two thumbs, needs to give one of them as an upvote for this video...
Use a cross cut sled on your table saw if you have one.
It's also important to add that you're using that stick to keep your fingers away from the blade. BTW, cutting a small piece like that was my first woodworking rookie error in 1996. Made the old guys at the word shop really mad at me. 😮
