Thunder Road, Born to Run and Jungleland are my favourites, but the whole album is just a joy to listen to from start to finish. I was lucky enough to be at the concert in Gothenburg 2012 where Bruce and the band played Jungleland for the first time since Clarence passed away. That was a very emotional experience!

That sounds awesome Jorma! I have never seen him in concert and am really hoping I still get that opportunity and does another tour as none of us are getting any younger! Really appreciate you watching!

always will love the late big man's wailing sax solo in Jungleland

He was the best! Added so much on this album for sure and the epic Jungleland is tough to beat!

She's The One... when they play it live, they up the tempo and it MAKES the song. The "Hammersmith Odeon '75" version is pretty much rock'n'roll in a nutshell.

Thunder Road, Born to Run, Backstreets, Jungleland and the sound itself are epic. Great album! Thunder Road is my favorite for personal reasons.

By far his best work, I was never a huge fan but you can't deny he has talent and delivers. Back then often bands would only put out one single and more often than not it wasn't the cream of the album. Money for Floyd was the only single of dark side, any other radio play was organic.

Thanks for watching Angel, this is one of my favorite albums we have reviewed so far and works well as a cohesive album from start to finish. Interesting the difference between the singles put out then compared to now where bands will put out 5 singles no problem lol!

I might be wrong, but...pretty sure that's the Brecker Brothers on the intro to 10th Avenue Freezeout. Clarence too, but there are several horns, and they were arranged by Steve Van Zandt. This next part I'm 90% sure of. Bruce wrote Clarence's Jungleland sax solo. Well, maybe not "wrote," but heard it in his head and walked CC thru every note, note by note until he had it down.

Great info and we did this a long time ago I have since read the story of Clarence on Jungleland. He talked about it being a 17 hour marathon and he wanted to kill Bruce haha Thanks for watching!

Truly one of the all time great albums. There's a concept albeit maybe a loose one - but something to make you think. It's a time frame surrounding the narrative This record takes place during a pivotal day and subsequent evening and late night to early morning in the life of the main character Our story begins from say mid to late afternoon as Thunder Road begins the meaningful playful and hopeful part of the day - soon into night - as he offers the woman he's infatuated with a ride - a date - some hope of a better life and future with an evening - or possibly a life filled with love hope and adventure. Tenth Avenue and Night being the beginning of the evening's adventure. filled with a young man's promosie of affection and attention with an air of bravado and confidence. Then we hit the 10 - 11 pm and seminal part of the night when everything turns while hiding on a backstreet huddled in his car our hero is punched with betrayal, utter heartbreak and disappointment as she will not stay despite passion and shared history and leaves him alone with only a deep pain in his chest an broken promise. Side two then becomes the reaction to Backstreets that unfolds after 12 pm and into the next early hours as our hero pleads with the girl and love he's just lost. Born to Run pleads for her as he clings to some love for her and hope she may change her mind and come back - She's the One as an extension of that feeling turns into also a lonely lement and declaration there will never be another like her and that admission may be enough to win back her heart - Meeting Across the River continues as an attempt at some redemption and another possible plea and attempt to show he's worthy - to put himself "out on that line" - out of character for him - but a place he's willing to go - for her - if he succeeds - maybe she'll see him in a new light. Then at 3 - 4 am the next morning finally some resignation and acknowledgement that our heroes station and environment is set against him and the once elated pair of lovers - as he is pre-determined for a life on the backstreets In a gang - or a band who without a record deal has nowhere to be but with an unknown barefoot girl very late at night in the soft summer rain hangin' underneath that giant Exxon sign - and there they are destined to remain; but low and behold somehow our heroine appears again for one last desperate moment together possibly because of his sheer will or for her some kind of emotional exhaustion the lover returns to our hero - and they end up together quietly whispering to each other behind a locked bedroom door; where at first she is still determined to refuse - but then surrenders - for a brief moment they become one heart - one soul. But only too soon he's called away maybe to finish the meeting across the river, that does not end well and their dream and our hero is shot down because our lovers are in a world where even the best and noblest of hearts can "try to make an honest stand - but wind up wounded - not even dead" as the ambulance pulls away she is resigned and shuts out the light ending what may have been. and only a primal soul scream will possibly purge the pain. Now on the streets in the heart of Jungleland - it's the darkest deepest part of the night that somehow soon will inevitably give way to some small hope of a new dawn.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics You're welcome and thanks for the nice reply. As you maybe can tell - i've lived with this record for a long time - it has consistently been my second favorite right behind Bruce's second record "The Wild the Innocent and The E Street Shuffle" which I highly recommend. Good luck and have fun.

Wait till you hear his next album, "Darkness on the Edge of Town," (1978). I spent the entire summer of 78 listening to these two. Whichever one was on the turntable was the best album I'd ever heard. I'd be sure it was "Born to Run." Come on. What could be better? But then I'd play Darkness, and damn, it was maybe better. Back and forth. I just couldn't decide.
Bruce has made a lot of great albums; make that great, great albums, but I don't think any have topped these two.

    • @ReactionsToTheClassics
      @ReactionsToTheClassics  2 года назад

We have that one up and a ton more of Bruce now. I agree I think Darkness is his most underrated album! Retrospectively because it came between Born To Run and The River it gets forgotten. Thanks John!

  • @BarbaPamino

Front to back this is the greatest production of Rock and Roll ever put together. Not a collection of his best songs. And not the best songs in Rock history. But this is a greater than the sum of its parts kind of deal.
But it was the amalgamation of everything great about Rock and Roll up to that point and blended together perfectly. He never recorded am album as well as this was recorded.
It's the only album where I prefer most songs on the record over the concert versions.
Where as Darkness may be his best collection of songs, it doesn't hit the same way the songs hit live. Now had Darkness been recorded in 1978 the way it was in 2009/10 with just the band in an empty concert hall then I may chosen Darkness over BTR.

6:20 - You'd think during those six months, Bruce could've gotten some singing lessons! It's a great song with a great band - unfortunately, Bruce sings over most of it :(
I enjoyed Bruce's later work, starting with "Tunnel of Love".

Bruce has said many times his voice isn’t great, his guitar playing not spectacular and therefore , his lyrics would have to be exceptional ... and they are. His voice fits the story he’s telling
