- As per the youtube members of this channel, we have produced the #ClanWolverine video, and done so respectfully. In this #Battletech / #Mechwarrior video, I cover as much as I can, going over a basic introduction as to how the #Clans came to be, before going into the history of #ClanWolverine, which is found in only a few sourcebooks, and mostly comes from the novel #BetrayalofIdeals. #Wolverine didn’t exist for long, so instead of talking wholly about instutitions, it’s really the story of #SarahMcEvedy, #FranklinHallis, and #NicholasKerensky. The #SLDF would probably be ashamed to see what the clans were before they left.

I think there's a tragic irony in the fact that after Nicholas Kerensky died, Clan Wolf started to implement the very same openness between castes and tactical flexibility that they helped destroy the Wolverines for using. And that by low-key adopting a lot of the things the Wolverines had done before them, the Wolves were able to repeatedly succeed where the other Clans failed. So in a way, Nicholas's own chosen Clan proved him wrong in the long run.

I had not thought of it this way but this is a really good point. They tragically cut off their greatest innovators and persecuted them for success only to then adopt many of those same practices a short time later. Good point.

The clans actively purged any trace of the wolverines after the Trial of Genocide, with one instance in which a sibko was informed that their genetic code had been corrupted with wolverine legacy and the response was for each and every one of those people to pick up a gun and shoot themselves in the head.
Say it with me: There Are No More Wolverines. They are a dead clan and a dead society. You would have a better chance of finding Roanoakers or Non-crazy Wobbies.

I'm imagining Anastasius Focht passing down orders to the Wolverine pilots before Tukayyid: "Announce that your mech is called a Wolverine so that the Clanners get angry at you and start chasing you. Once they do, retreat toward one of the kill zones that we've prepared."

wouldn't work, clann would break batchall and go all out bringing in galaxies not put in the original batchall to punish comstar. they may had even brought more clans into the mix if they thought that they were clan wolverine as part of the comstar. interesting that clan wolverine is the one that is remember but clan widowmaker isn't mention as much.

Outlawing something even to the point of not allowing to be spoken about, only shows how much you are afraid about said thing and Nicholas is a prime example of this.

Honestly, the most tragic thing is that Clan Wolverine was massacred and genocided for nothing. It didn't prevent the Clans from developing a path away from N. Kerensky's vision. It didn't prevent the Clans from falling into internal strife centuries down the road.
It was a senseless, useless war that did nothing but cement Kerensky's legacy of being a controlling madman.
Keep in mind that EVERYONE who followed Nicky K was insane. These were combat veterans who happily followed a civilian just because they liked his dad. There is no way that Nikky tested out as a superb Battletech pilot or beat any of the much better trained and experienced former SLDF mechwarriors. Everything about him was a lie. He was a narcissistic, megalomaniac politician cult leader, leading a bunch of shellshocked, PTSD, and brainwashed psychos.
Nick is defiantly a melomaniac and its a shame the star leage forces people didn't call out his BS. IRL if a military brat tried to change the whole of a society built on the military command structure I would think ppl would say take a hike.

A good portion of Clan Wolverine's second line units and most of the civilians survived under the leadership of saKhan Trish Ebon and it's still a mystery what became of them. Their flotilla even had some WarShips.
It's also been confirmed that the Minnesota Tribe that raided the Combine several times during the 2SW were Wolverine remnants and an Explorer Corps team even visited Barbados in the 3040s, where the last stand between the Wolverines led by Khan Franklin Hollis and the other Clans took place. The ComStar personnel found some monuments that were constructed post-battle and gathered enough evidence that *someone* was maintaining the memorial site as recent as a year or so prior to ComStar's arrival.
So the survivors of Clan Wolverine are still out there... Somewhere.

Funny how quickly "honor" falls by the wayside the second one of the Clans outshines the other. It's almost comical how childishly petty the Clans get when they don't get their way, even when it's their own damn fault.
They didn't just outshine other Clans, McEvedy outshined Kerensky himself, and he couldn't have that.
Never show a cult leader that you can do their thing better than them.
I guess the Clans never were able to breed out petty jealousy in there Eugenic program. The fact that simple cooperation between Clans is a competition. Wolverine outshined other Clans in early Eugenic medical, Technical and economic/production bothered Brain fever Nicholas Clan dictator. One would have thought Clan Wolverine's advances was what Nic wanted for all Clans. He was just Another petty Despot.
"Honor" amongst the Clans is more of a Dishonor by there standards.
Why their invasion failed. Even after the Fall they started making up new Clans Stone Lion anyone? Who knows maybe there are more now in Clan space since Ghost Bear, Snow Raven & most of Wolf, Jade Falcon, Goliath Scorpion and a good portion of Hell Horses are in the inner spear. Still spreading chaos even now. They are just as Bad the great houses.
1st thing they did following Tukayyid was start fighting among themselves.

Its not that they were doing better that got the wolverines killed; its that they did so through disobedience towards Nicolas Kerensky's rules. Remember at the time because of that guy the clans were pretty much identical to eachother except in name an iconography, and clan wolverine is the one that DARED break the mold. And Clan Wolf is proof enough that they wouldn't have been killed for their way of doing things if only it happened after Nicolas's death.
Clanners arent to big on altering society heavily, and with nicolas around, freedom of thought as a whole was seen as dangerous. Success by itself though? Clanners don't mind that much, though they will naturally try to batchall their way into fixing any large gap.
This is where Things Go Wrong for the Clans. This is where Nicholas K proves he has more in common with Stefan Amaris than his father. This, like every good story from the Battletech universe, is a tragic one.
To be fair, Nicholas doesn't have much in common with Amaris either.
He's his own kind of evil.
He's a Utopian psychopath. The worst kind of monster.

I read the book Betrayal of Ideals it was a very good book to read. In a twist irony Nicholas had every mention and history of Clan Wolverine erased. But kept a personal diary of what really happened to that clan. It was Phehan Kell (hope I spell it right), after becoming Khan of the Wolf clan did he read the account and learn the sad truth.
My group of players always found this story a truly great premise for a battletech campaign for surviving Clan Wolverine forces that managed to escape. In our timeliness, they not only survived but prospered far beyond what the clans feared, far south of the Inner Sphere. Ironically, their existence was primarily held back by their bitter & never-ending hatred for the clans.
I know I'm months late. But Secrets of the Jihad flat out provides evidence that the Manei Domini were created by descendants of Clan Wolverine if not being a product of Clan Wolverine itself.
Even the Celestial series of Mechs are all based on Clan Wolverine exclusive mechs whose only time on the battlefield had only been against their fellow Clanners as all the clans were simultaneously attacking them. And A LOT about the Manei Domini and their mechs are a direct refutal or loophole abuse of Clan Culture and Honor. And then separately the Manei Domini when their warcrimes are at their absolute worst is vs the clans, where some of them were noted for even being extremely humane and the best model of how to both wage urban warefare and not only avoid civilization casualties but even to give post battle aid...right up until the Clans entered into their warzones...then it was warcrimes o'clock

I refuse to believe that Clan Wolverine is gone. After the Minnesota Tribe’s appearance and disappearance, they had to have gone somewhere.
They are protecting the Inner Sphere from alien invasion so that alien didn't made an appearance in the Inner Sphere.
I hold the firm believe that they decided to leave for an even deeper distance and are now preparing for a merciless clapback at the clans. I would not be too surprised if in the distant time whn the Voice of Kerensky would arrive at the Inner Sphere (around the year 3550), a suddenly invasion of a brutal group of unknown forces would wash over the ilClan territories (or whichever exists at that time) with the aim to perish the Clans and erect a final Star League on the ashes of the traitors and bastards that once sough to perish them.
I think they're the power behind the Jarnfolk. If you don't know who they are; Jarnfolk are deep periphery traders who are somehow able to manufacture their own jumpships. They also sometimes hire out as paid assassin's for Inner Sphere powers. No one suspects them of anything because they are poor and live far outside the IS. But someone taught them jumpships technology, and someone is gaining from the intelligence they gather.
@@datrux I don't think so. The Clans are even aware of the Jarnfolk themselves and they let them go as they are completely harmless to even them. If Wolverine was there, certainly they would have been spotted.
Be a helluva thing for the decendants of Clan Wolverine to be the inevitable straw that broke the back of the ilclan era.
Every dictator chooses a scapegoat, be it ideology, religion, or former allies, and then attempts to purge them. In every case, this leads to their downfall.

This was really cool backstory! Always cracked me up that this clan was so hated that the clan variant of the Wolverine battlemech was not allowed to carry THAT name with the IIC designation... instead, the clans named it the Conjurer to completely avoid any reference to the Not-Named clan.
You're right. The Hallis line did survive through descendants in the Inner Sphere. It is said this line did not join Kerensky's exodus. Two such members were indeed part of Com Star, they were Bordon Hallis and his cousin Jodi Hallis, they both fought and died against Clan Steel Viper and Clan Nova Cat respectively in the battle of Tukayyid. The warriors of both Clans would go on to hunt and kill Bordon's children, Kristen and Leonard. The last surviving Hallis, would then face off against both Clan stars on the planet Zurich in the Federted Commonwealth while fighting for the famed Eridani Light Horse. Did Andrew die? it is not certain. He may have survived and his identity changed with the help of Comstar. This is the story presented in the Mechwarrior Second Edition adventure; Bloodright
As a long fan of Clan Wolverine, having played them exclusively when I table top gamed, as well as writing an obscene amount of fan fic about what happened to them after they disappeared, this was an AMAZING video. Thank you so much for the care and effort you put towards this project.

It seems highly unlikely that the remnant Wolverines were truly so pridefully idealistic that most of them didn't realize that the true long game is seek the ultimate revenge... Living well.
Ideas are something hard to destroy. It would be poetic that the unknown descendants of the Wolverines would be among those that fight for liberty spreading the ideals of meritocracy and justice through the Inner Sphere. I have no doubt some became mercenaries, some pirates, yet others scientists, researchers, but also simple traders and farmers to spymasters and politicians.
Ultimately, the ideas of Wolverine have always been a part of the best of Inner Sphere... I'd like to think they did return to be a part of that again yet recognizing the lesson that they learned from their time in the Clans... The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.
I agree. I don't think the survivors of Wolverine had a single fate. They would have been scattered, perhaps coalescing into larger groups or splitting as needs and opportunities arose and faded. Some may have waited for a chance at vengeance, while others simply moved on.
Gotta agree with you about the Wolverines just being left alone in the main story line. They are last seen wearing the 331 Minnesota tribe uniforms and then poof. Gone. It’s good enough. No need for some secret integration into ComStar or sitting in wait for a chance to strike. They came back to the Innersphere. Performed a few key strikes on IS bases for supplies and parts and then just parted ways along their ancient homelands. Returning to their original house and just being a regular Joe. Yeah sure have a few become mercenaries and what not but the bulk of the survivors just going off to live their lives in peace is the best possible ending in my book.
Good stuff and a good summary of the only clan to actually achieve what Nicholas Kerensky only pretended to do. Advance their culture beyond the confines of a failing society to create a brighter future for all.
From a lore standpoint, they are probably the most interesting faction imaginable. The best of the SLDF, combined with the best of Clan ways free of Jim Johnes Kerensky’s influence.

I can remember reading all the books,novels, and lore back when Battle Tech first came out. And the one that has always stayed as a constant was that Nicholas Kerensky was the egotistical maniacal snake in the grass that would do and did anything for power above all else including the myth of the so oft touted honor of his new society. Jaimie Wolf in one of novels makes mention of the nuke that Clan Widowmaker set off, Natasha Kerensky said that it was a shame she could never live down.
You and Tex of the BPL are now my favorite Battletech people. It would be great if you could both do one together. Great content!!!
He's got a whole team. He does very different content than I do, and a very different approach and release. He's an awesome dude, but we won't be doing one together.

Having both styles of presentation has been very helpful for at least me. They are vastly different in approach to the same topic and seem to focus on different but equally important sets of information.
I think this is most evident by comparing and contrasting both parties videos on the subjects of the Warhammer and Marauder.
Tex plays an in-universe character with very heavy in-universe biases and shitpost-inspired "jokes". Big Red's a player telling other people why they should play too with some cool info, with his own preferences and biases dictated by gameplay and experience. Tex posts once a year, Big Red posts coincidentally whenever I need a battletech fix. I consider their content complimentary opposites.

this is the reason why the IlClan era seems unworkable. Internal conflict within the Clans normally stop any kind of long term success. It might work in an isolated situation and even then as this shows the constant discrimination and inflexible doctrine will cause breakdowns.

Ironic that today i got a Bullshark 95 t assault mech (in the HBS game) as reward for one of the flashpoints.
Imagine my surprise when i got a mech full of clan goodies that was found among the remains of a derelict jump capable vessel that came from the deep periphery... and Natasha Karensky of all people had a hard on for destroying every trace of.
"A wolverine logo ? funny that since the mech was named after a shark" as one of the NPC observes :)) .
Not QUITE clan level goodies but very close.

I liked your closing thoughts on the Clan. that they made it home, and became one with the Inner Sphere again. And that their descendants would likely fight against the Clans.
Also, Clan Wolverine being a cautionary tale sounds better than them turning into a some secret arm of ComStar.
I know it's a little late for a comment but I wanted you to know that this video played a huge part in me developing a tabletop force of Minnesota Tribe.
Ah, Nicholas Kerensky. Battletech's greatest monster.
He 100% is.
Nah, that award goes to Stefan Amaris. There is nothing in the setting that he did not ruin.
Nicky K is Battletech's biggest lunatic. Between growing up under the Amaris Occupation and Amaris Civil War, then enduring the Exodus, his illness and the start of the Exodus Civil War, and surrounded by desperate, deeply damaged people, he wasn't operating in anything close to reality. Is it any wonder that he saw everything associated with the 'old ways' as poison? I think he 100% believed in what he was doing, and was trying to create a better way. He was so deeply damaged and nucking futz that he was literally incapable of seeing the flaws: his trauma meant that he couldn't hold onto anything from before, it ALL had to go.
This isn't me letting him off the hook mind you. He's still a monster, but I'd put him behind the likes of Thomas "The Master" Marik and Amos "Baby Killer" Forlough. So he's still rubbing shoulders with Katrina Steiner and Brett Andrews.
So many horrible people in the BT lore, its hard to pick just one...
@@EmperorPylades Fair, very fair. I still rank Nicky above him due to the scale of the harm he caused. The Star League would have fallen into civil war at some point, but someone had to make the Clans happen and Nicky was the man for the job.
Body count doesn't necessarily make someone the most evil. Amaris was a vile piece of shit.
But Utopians are their own special brand of evil, especially once they take power and start shaping society...
Ran a campaign where the 'outcasts' where adopted into or part of Clan Wolverine. Clan campaign during the Innersvere invasion of clan space. Wolverines launched their assault against the Clans to keep the true spirit of Kerensky.
I hope they didn't quite win...... but enough of a showing that a growing percentage of the other clans start seeing "the light" and also start changing their ways....
Always interested in seeing a different view on these lore/histories of Battletech. A brief window in to a part of the earliest days of the Clans that, to this day, still has an impact within Clan culture.
For the fate of the wolverines, I know it's not canon but I like implication from HBS Battletech's Heavy Metal DLC. Where you discover a crashed wolverine ship in the deep periphery outside the capellan confederation. Suggesting that after the "Minnesota raids" they basically skirted the inner sphere until they reached the opposite direction of clan space then set off into the unknown, much like the first exodus, to find their own place.
Until we get a definitive answer that is my headcanon
Likely wouldn't have made sense tbh. I'm not big on most official things with Clan Wolverine.
Personally, I would love to find out that the remnants of Wolverine managed to settle their own world far from Clan space. They have been keeping tabs on the Inner Sphere and are aware of the Clan invasions all the way up to the IlClan era. All the while they have been biding their time and building up their strength waiting to strike back at their enemies, mainly Clan Wolf and now the time may be right.

According to some (contested) sources, the genetic legacy of the Wolverines lives on in Clan Ghost Bear.
Telling a member of Clan Ghost Bear that the are the best that Clan Wolverine had to offer is the epitome of "Fuck Around and Find Out"

I think each of the destroyed Clans gives a great lesson in understanding Clan society. How they react to misinterpretation of the will of Kerensky, breaking Clan values, etc. People have given the Wolverines a vaunted meme status, but if their story didn't exist, I think a lot more people would be asking, "the Clan system seems stupid, why didn't anyone pack up and head home?" Wolverine tried, Wolverine died.
Their open-ended disappearance makes their story even more chilling. They weren't simply routed or absorbed into another Clan, it's not clear whether they ever got to return home to the Inner Sphere or just disintegrated as a people out there somewhere in the cold void.
Sadly, it's increasingly clear that they sruvived, and became "the Clave" :\

@@BigRed40TECH There have been scions of the Hallis name before. Not all of them joined the Exodus. There used to be a "noble house" though the Steel Vipers and Nova Cats claimed to have destroyed that. It is not impossible that there are more scattered throughout the inner sphere. 300 years is a long time.

I've got two Wolverines in my collection which aren't painted yet. I'm planning to do up one in Ghost Bear colors, as the ultimate expression of "Fuck you, Clanner scum".
Fantastic work on this video essay! It does a great job of showing not only the tragedy of the loss of the best of the Clans, but the utter megalomania of Nicholas Kerensky. While I have entertained the idea of the Wolverines/Minnesota Tribe joining with other SLDF remnants like the Eridani Light Horse, I do concede that your interpretation of what likely happened to them is more fitting.

The wolverine clan were descendants of old North American (USA) and Canada during war against Amaris. The wolverines still believed in fairness and hard work to promote up in their society. Unfortunately, the wolverines were set up by jealous and petty clan khans…

Are the Wolverines being USA/Canadian descendants ever explicitly confirmed (besides Minnesota being the 331st emblem)?
I haven't seen that in many resources, though if it is, it'd likely be in Operation Klondike. It's something I might look into a bit more later.
The Royal Regiments were all troops from just the Terran Hegemony, almost all also had military history and cultural ties to Earth preunification military units and cultures. It wouldn't surprise me if the clan with the biggest issues with how Nicolas believed things had to be drew most of their heritage from North America.

Regarding your closing thoughts...I'm of the opinion that while they planned to return to the Inner Sphere, they would eventually find a safe place to hide out and develop outside of it, thus explaining why we've not seen any mention of them since the Minnesota Tribe incidents. Apologies to any reading below, this'll be a ramble.
Perhaps some of their members or their descendants would be scattered about in the Inner Sphere, but otherwise they'd have their own safe spot, or be scattered out amongst a few safe places to avoid being found and hunted to extinction as they almost were by the other Clans.
While the idea that they all went home and dissolved into the Inner Sphere makes sense given their initial plans (McEvedy mentions trying to link back up with Blake's Ministry of Communications if possible), it ultimately brings up more questions than answers making it a flawed theory.
1) How would they have stayed secret for so long? Their incursion into Combine space was noticed by not just the Combine, but Comstar itself, and both suspected they were elements of a returning SLDF.
Even without those happenings, a simple truth regarding secrets is that the more people know it, the easier it is for it to get out. Diminished as they were, a good portion of Clan Wolverine still managed to survive, and spreading out fully back into the Sphere means it'd be very difficult to make sure no one talks.
2) What would they do? They can't try to stop the Succession Wars nor re-establish the Star League (or if they did, those efforts clearly amounted to nothing). Perhaps they'd consider the possibility of the Clans' return and try to prepare the Inner Sphere for what would become the Clan Invasion. Except that "honor" dubiously goes to the Wolf's Dragoons.
At best, dissolving back into the Sphere means they did nothing. At worst, they potentially contributed to the Succession Wars, and thus the downward spiral the Inner Sphere was sliding into. With no information regarding them since the Minnesota Tribe incidents, it seems more likely than not that they didn't go back, at least not a significant amount of them.
TLDR - While I feel the "they just returned" theory has some sense and merit based on their initial plans, it falls apart as there remain questions that have no good answers and likely wouldn't, and it means that in theory the Inner Sphere (or at least Comstar) could've/should've known about the existence of the Clans (or the descendants of the SLDF surviving) long before they arrived. Still, it's better than the theories about them all dying out in space or becoming a bunch of Comstar crazies instead.
I was hoping that Clan Wolverine would return with technology even more advance than the Clan and destroy the Clan before leaving again.
I mean. That'd be a terrible narrative tbh, and pretty unlikely given the state they left Clan space in, lol

In another bit of irony; everything that Clan Widowmaker does to elevate their own standing would ultimately lead to their downfall as eventually they'd be absorbed into Clan Wolf.

We ought to revive the Wolverines, make the Wolverine the symbol of the unaffiliated mechwarrior pilot. Kind of like the Samurai has the Ronin, a solo Mechwarrior should be known as a "Wolverine". A sole fighter and an opponent to be feared and respected.

I kinda hope all the interpretations of the Clan Wolverine's fate are true. Some joined the ComStar and helped found the Blakist faction, others were simply happy to be home however damaged it was, others still founded mercenary orders or joined the great houses, fighting tooth and nail against the clanners when they invaded. My personal hope though, is that at least one faction left the Inner sphere entirely. Gone to distant stars to lick their wounds and build a nation to rival the Star League's splendor in its prime... a nation that will eventually come in contact with the Wolf empire now seated on Tera and hopefully give Clan Protagonist the treatment they deserve.
That nation, even centuries later, would be a backwater with a population in the thousands. :\
They really just don't have the population for a lot of these fantastical things.

If they did do anything like that, it would probably be people who joined on later much like how a fairly large swathe of the Wolf's Dragoons was eventually made up of Inner Sphere residents and not Clanner scouts. I honestly just want some hint at their return or a successor faction and for someone to give the Wolves a good swift kick.

Best they could realistically hope for in any scenario would be giving them a bloody lip and a black eye before they got completely obliterated. 300 years isn't a super long time to nation build without substantial backing and production capability...and unless ComStar was doing shady backroom shit again, they probably wouldn't have the backing needed.
Really great video, clan wolverine is badass. If only they'd survived long enough, they could have become the star league of clanner space. So ironic that they were destroyed, since clanners say all they want is to rebuild the old star league.

I'd argue she was very much apart of that darkness. It's only when it was clear that her group was being victimized by the other Clans that she even began to move away from it in any serious way.

To all of the players of Battletech... I have been playing one of the surviving factions of Clan Wolverine. I have been playing this set of units since 1985 when I was in the Marine Corps. It was officially introduced in the 1990's. I love the tenacity of the Wolverine Clan, because they are the reason for most of the advanced technology of the Clans in the first place. I actually submitted several ideas pertaining to advanced weapons and technology with several phone calls to FASA when they were still in charge of the Battletech game. Mike Mulvahil and Sam Lewis were 2 of the people I talked to about the advanced tech that I and my players were using.....I just wish I had been able to get mentioned for those advancements.... The Clans lead a fairly austere lifestyle, largely because the Pentagon Worlds and Kerensky Cluster are marginal candidates at best for colonisation. They recycle almost everything they can, and despise waste in general.
I like the idea of Wolverine reminants fighting with commstar at tukayyid. Simply due to it being poetic if nothing else.

This is something you see over and over again in history. It’s why I’ve stopped respecting the argument that we shouldn’t judge people for believing what was ‘normal’ at the time. When things are wrong, someone has always protested it. People regularly fight back. They usually lose, because every system of oppression near them will team up to keep their own people from rebelling in turn, but sometimes, they win, and even more rarely, they take over and establish a better system than the one that oppressed them.

I've played Battletech since the mid 80s, although I took a long break from the late 90s till now. As a gamer I understand the needs for a war game setting to have many factions balanced one way or another so that they can all fight each other. This makes for horrible worlds to live in for the most part.
I also grew up in a military family, and even before I served myself, I had issues with Aleksandr Kerensky.
I have always seen him as a traitor and oath breaker, not to the Star League or Lord Cameron, but to the citizens of the Star League and the Terran Hegemony. I have also always seen him as a failure, made manifest not in his battle field record but his son Nicholas and naming him his successor in leadership of the Exodus. What happened to the Wolverines reminds me of why I think the clans are wrong in so many ways.
I still have a Supernova Trinary for table top, as well as a couple battalions of other factions. For when I want to vary my play style or introduce someone new to the game using my own stuff.
Well, yea. The Kerenskys as a whole I think are not as great as the lore initially would have us believe. Alexander left people behind and by doing so, created the conditions to create the Clans, who are monsters. It's very sad.
I would say that is a harsh take for Alexander for the thing your ignoring: Things was quickly going south in the IS, and he felt that now the Civil war was over, but the TH was torn apart, he was faced with a really bad choices. He guessed wrong that taking the most experienced army ever forged to that point away from every side would limit the damage that could be inflicted. Oh he was very wrong, but put yourself in that position, you just spent 3 years crossing the IS fighting and your looking down the barrel of not only more fighting, but with the very forces you made inflicting more upon the people you serve.
From the books Alexander really was a great person who survived everything thrown at him, and really tried to do the right thing. Now his son? That bastard is everything wrong a human being could achieve.
@@dolomaticus1180 I understand Aleksandr had few good choices and made the one he thought was the best, but I was raised knowing the service oath of the US armed forces. So although I am slightly annoyed with the decisions some characters made to follow Kerensky on the Exodus, I understand why FASA and those responsible for Battletech did it for the in game world.
I realize that for the SLDF service oaths were different, feudal societies tend to swear service oaths to a crown and country, the Cameron's were dead and with them the Star League. Much of the SLDF was from the outer states, and no surprise that they would want to return to their home states. However, the Royal Regiments were troops from the Terran Hegemony, they were basically the Terran Hegemony armed forces, their unit traditions were even more closely tied to old Earth and preunification nations. Although their oaths were to the Lord Cameron and the Star League it was also to the Terran Hegemony, and each regiment probably had traditions tieing them to specific militaries and places going back centuries if not millennia, such as the Black Watch.
This is were the US armed forces service oath kicks in for me. In the US military we recognize the president as commander in chief of the armed forces but we do not swear an oath of loyalty to the president. Nor is the oath to the government of the USA, the oath is to the Constitution and the Citizens of the USA. Much of the Hegemony worlds were broken, many nuked multiple times, but the inhabitants were still there, the worst disaster in human history to that point. Their were people in need everywhere and the clean up and relocation to safe habitable places would take many decades, requiring man power, technical skills and space lift capabilities. Instead in less than 6 years of the Civil War ending Aleksandr made a deal with Blake and left with all of the military personnel loyal to him, as well as their equipment and families. Comstar would make deals with some of the SLDF that stayed to protect the Sol System and its worlds, they hunted and killed the others, and the rest of the Terran Hegemony was basically abandoned.
Now I understand that most of the SLDF had been fighting under Kerensky for sometime in the outerrim pacification before Amaris killed the Cameron's. I have studied military history and understand why some soldiers and sailors would be more loyal to General Kerensky than the Star League or the Hegemony, it's the same reason Roman Legions marched against Rome several times. However the Royal Regiments abandoning the Hegemony and almost all of them following Kerensky has always bugged me.
It's why I created one of the mercenary forces that I have, two battalions that are all that's left after the Civil War and 3 Succession Wars of a Royal Regimental Combat Team, that stayed behind. That was using their combat engineers, medical personnel, and space lift capabilities to save citizens of the Hegemony and rebuild worlds while their mechs and aerospace assets protected them from pillagers, bandits and pirates (to include Successor States). Generations spent trying to fix the worlds of the Hegemony, while the Successor States and Comstar saw them as nothing but places on a map to manuver their military and diplomatic playing pieces upon. While the Comstars Mercenary Review Board found ways of removing all the advanced Star League tech they had.
I created a tragic story of a group of people that took their oaths of service to the Hegemony and it's people more important than their lifes or their oaths to the Cameron's, Star League, or Kerensky. I am annoyed by the decisions some fictional characters made but understand the world building reasons for those decisions. The fighters and families of the Discordant Lead HATE Kerensky, those that followed him, and Comstar as traitors to humanity and the citizens of the worlds of the Terran Hegemony, but they are only 4 companies of mechs, 2 drop ships a combat engineer company and a company sized field hospital, their hate is a small insignificant thing... from a certain point of view. Same time I also have a Clan Supernova Trinary, a DCMS force, a LCAF force, a Taurian Concordate force and several mercenary forces that have very different stories behind them.
That turned out to be a lot longer than I thought.

@@jlokison Well I agree with you up to a point. But a slight counterpoint is that the Star League had been in existence for over 200 years, and the Camerons were in control for easily 150 years. I would say that the loyalties to TH, SL and Camerons became very blurred. Plus Alexander pretty much convinced the Army he had that the only chance they had to preserve the ideals of the SL was to leave and not be used to destroy what was left.
