I am pleased at how honestly you viewed Nintendo's situation. I'm of a similar opinion that the WiiU really needs something special to get people to buy it for 3rd party titles. It looks pretty rough at this point, but Nintendo is always full of surprises.

the zelda trailer was NOT pre-rendered. It's in-game graphics because you can control lighting and camera of that demo.

wow its crazy how completely I agree with you from how underwhelming this e3 was, to the bad timing of 3rd party releases for the wii u to how uncomfortable the controller looks like it will be!

The Wii U would be a no-brainer for me if it also had some connectivity with the 3DS. As it stands, with only 1 player games out for the Wii U controller (which, let's face it, IS THE DRAW for the Wii U), I'm not sold on the system.

I really don't like how you have to play 4 player games with the Wiimote (maybe with nunchuck). Sure you can get a classic controller to plug into it, but that costs extra money, and I don't like how the classic controllers plug into the Wiimote itself. Nintendo should make a Bluetooth controller for the Wii U that functions like the classic controller and comes with the console. It doesn't need the touch screen or stuff like that for 4 player games.

Very interesting, I never considered the third party issues Nintendo might have. That may be a problem, but I'm personally more excited about what this thing can do. It seems like there are a ton of different gaming possibilities with this new controller. Hopefully the third parties catch on and take advantage of what they have here in this console. Also, new Smash Brothers. Always excited when one of those is announced, especially when it's also on 3DS.

What you said at the end can't be further from the truth. Games have to be re-invented for the controller to make players want it. Otherwise it's just a "cool" feature that lets me play games on a small screen. I'm sure developers can find something to do with all the sensors and added peripherals, on the new controller, that give franchises like Bioshock and CoD a boost. Nintendo has to push them to do it. Does Nintendo even give incentives for this?

The controller is a tiny bit bigger in size than the kindle keyboard (obviously about a centimetre thick)

  • @animationdude56

What if the controller has the same glasses-free 3D screen the 3DS has, but bigger? That'd be awesome, having the option to play in 3D or HD, although personally I'd play in HD, so probably not.

What i find weird is how they say there can't be multiplayer with two Wii U controllers - yet it would be the best way of co-op'ing since you would have your own screen each

  • @SuperTrainStationH
    @SuperTrainStationH 13 лет назад

Nintendo actually came out and specifically stated that the Wii U is more powerful in terms of graphical capability than any other currently released home console, but that still doesn't change the fact that what Nintendo showed at E3 was a COOL IDEA that has potential, not a must have game platform.

@SOUTHWESTENZ Well the tech demos look much more like Wii titles, but their rendered trails for Zelda/Bird flying tech demo more closely resemble a PS3/360 game, but good point.

  • @GuitarwolfZero
    @GuitarwolfZero 13 лет назад

Some very good points there, Pete. I think the friends codes system has put a very bad stigma on Nintendo's online services that a lot of hardcore gamers (especially those who already own a PS3 and 360) are going to avoid supporting the WiiU in terms of third party multi-platform games. Also I can't help but be concerned that once Sony and Microsoft put out their next console (likely around 2013) we'll just be back to square one with Nintendo's console unable to support multi platform games.

main reasons i like the Wii U: new Online experiance,Hd graphics, hardcore games that are on the xbox and ps3,nintendo exclusive, less boreing way to play(not boreing regular controller),both me and my friends can play games we like(refer to hardcore game bit)and screen on controller so i can finally game anywhere in my house

  • @LemonlyGamer

The reasons Nintendo wouldn't make the Wii U controller portable is this:
    1. Making the contoller self-render all those HD games would make it hugely expensive and in-efficient
    2. It would compete with their own Nintendo 3DS

Good video Pete, I wasnt a fan of the Wii being a more hardcore gamer but I loved NES, SNES, N64, and the Gamecube since I love Nintendo's 1st party games Mario and Zelda especially so I am looking forward to seeing what they do in HD for these games. I think Zelda would be cool if you can see all your items on the remote screen and touch the screen to pick what you want to use but I dont generally like Gimmicky things like the Golf or Ninja Star Demo. We will see more to come :-)

I think the Wii U is going to be awesome. I can't wait to play games like Resident Evil, Zelda, Metroid using the Wii U controller. Selecting/combinding items, using the map, adjusting in game options all on the fly is gonna be EPIC! I'm very excited about the Wii U & this is coming from someone who collects mainly for the 360. I collect only exclusives for my PS3/Wii but for the Wii U.. that just might change :)

Regarding the game footage not running on actual Wii U hardware: When the Xbox 360 was revealed all the booths had the games running on Apple G5 computers. There was no trace of any actual working console, so the Wii U tech demos is way more than what Microsoft ever did.

the concept of moving the game to your smaller screen is actually one of the more ideas, and most full-fledged games wont' have that feature because the smaller screen would be needed for other stuff anyway. It's more of a "why not" feature.

  • @HonestGamer1

The only way I'll be interested in third party games on the Wii U is that they invent either a very cool, innovative and interesting way how to interact with the game using the new controller or they just release a bunch of exclusives that are custom made for the Wii U (not Nintendo games).

I'm told that the controller is very light and surprisingly comfortable although like I said, I was told that. Nobody besides E3 invites know. The controller doesn't look very ergonomic which has me worried. When they initially announced that they would be going back to a more "traditional" controller I was sort of expecting some kind of hyper-advanced Gamecube Controller cause that thing was great (aside from a few minor flaws).

You are totally right! I just think the same as you. And speaking out loud. I am not si much optimistic about the Wii U. It will take always long time until a new console is established. Just look at the Wii and 3DS. Starting slowly. But step by step the game library of really good games are growing. I am a casual gamer but playing since NES times. I will wait at least one or two years after the release of the Wii U to see who it will be. Same i did for the Wii by the way. Although i bought the

Nintendo will always be seen as a kids company by many gamers, so that's an issue that Nintendo haven't resolved. The casual gamers who love the Wii - don't really need HD or a huge controller. I think they're happy with 480P and simple visuals. In fact.. it's the simple nature of the Wii that people enjoy.
I personally wish that Nintendo had taken on Sony & MS for the next generation - and made a machine that is really cutting edge. I think Nintendo really need to make the price attractive.

I had the same exact issues w/the Wii U as you, almost point by point. The only thing you forgot to mention is the fact that, less than a year after the Wii U launches, no doubt the next-gen Sony & Microsoft systems will be out & Nintendo will be in the same exact position when it comes to 3rd party support as they are in now. They will have the less powerful console & 3rd party devs will have to make their own Wii U versions of next-next gen games.

I feel that for the sake of progression in gaming, there needs to be more trial and error consoles and game ideas. Without a company willing to go against the grain of gaming, we are left stuck with the same stuff recycled over and over. Innovation such as the Wii U should not be exiled because it is different, but supported 100%. It could prove to be one of the most amazing gaming experiences ever. However, classic gaming should be kept alive strong right alongside the innovative change.

First off, good insight video. Great to hear u experienced E3 while many of us can't. I don't think I'll buy another "Wii" even if it's now going to be in "HD". I love Nintendo and for what it has done for the gaming industry for the past decades. But this new console is a disappointment for me. They'll get stuck with the usual games that make their console money like Zelda, Metroid & Super Mario Bros. But other than that I'll stick with PS3 & 360 for Shooters etc, what Pete said. Still early...

I think its a good idea because Nintendo was always about unique ways of doing things, but in all honest they weren't entirely versatile to the average gamer. They'd buy the wii or any Nintendo product for mario zelda metroid and a few other iconic Nintendo characters, but most wouldn't really give third party games a chance. So i think its smart, everything about Nintendo is a smart start and Nintendo always finds a way to improve they're systems so I'm excited.

I'm worried about the Wii U. Like you said, the content that is coming out for the Wii U is coming a year later than the other console's content. I am also worried about the future of it, sure those graphics are looking nice now, but these graphics are on par with the console's from last generation. We get the hardcore titles now, but when the other next gens come out, I hope we aren't left behind like the Wii. If the third party titles are exclusive, that might persuade gamers to buy.

I agree with you all the way. The only fact that you're not thinking about is who the target audience is for Nintendo's WiiU, which are going to be children. Think about a parent coming up to the tv and saying they want to watch the tv after a hard day of work. That is the target idea, whereas the PS3 and Xbox360 are more adult targeted.

I feel that this E3 was underwhelming because in comparison to 2010's e3, it had a lot to follow up on, and I kinda expected this E3 not living up to hype as it can either stay hyped or go down from here. As we know every up has a down. As the Wii U conference, it was definately a game changer, as how Nintendo uses it, I trust Nintendo with this new piece of tech as we haven't seen them fail ever since virtual boy. For a tech geek and a gamer as myself, I cannot be more excited about the Wii U.

@mymovienerd The Wii was technically for everybody, no matter if they were "Core"/"Casual", male/female, and young/old. And they are taking this and really pushing it even more for the Wii U.
The Wii did have a "Core" audience. That is why there were games like Fire Emblem Radianr Dawn, Goldeneye, Sin & Punishment Star Successor, Metroid Other M, Metroid Prime Trilogy, SSBB, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Monster Hunter 3, No More Heroes 1&2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Mario Galaxy 1&2, etc.

I'm all for tge Wii U. It seems like a great concept, just like the original Wii was. I'll admit it, when I saw the Wii U revealed at E3, I was a bit taken back by it, underwhelmed as you put it best. Over the last few days though, I've warmed up to it a bit more. I just hope Nintendo has a lot more going for it than what they showed. It's gotta have something for the causal and something for the hardcore, as well as keep it balanced.

I agree, man. This year's E3 was weak overall, but it was mainly because of all the leaks, as you pointed out. I also agree with the whole Wii U controller, and how you can play the game on the screen. My Wii is in my room, I already have a 1080p LED TV in my room, I'll just replace my Wii, and get the Wii U, and simply play all the time on the big screen, what's the point of the smaller controller? And I'm told the 6.2 inch touch screen isn't even HD, so I don't really care for that.

I'd have to say that Nintendo's biggest hurdle with the new system is going to be selling it to their casual audience. I mean, why would someone who's bought a Wii and only uses it for a handful of other games have any reason to upgrade to the Wii U? An example of this is Guitar Hero 3 sold really well on the Wii, but the subsequent games, not so much, a big part of this was that the casual gamer sees no need to purchase something that does the same thing as something they already own.

I acutally was at E3 this year and I played wii u. Wii u has basically virtual reality FPS controls. Imagine the wii u controller is a little window into a virtual world around you. Your playing a FPS on the wii u controller and someone is shooting you from behind, you have to physically spin your body around to fire back at him. Wii U is the next step towards virtual reality.

Somehow I think people are thinking about the Wii U wrong. As I see it, Nintendo has become aware that if you want COD 12 you will buy it on 360 or PS3. You buy a Nintendo console for the "Nintendo experience." I'll ask you, do you really want more of the same? To stand in the store a store and wonder which console to get a game for? I support this console for providing a new experience and embracing multiplayer in the same room as your friends. Final note, Battlefield 3 on PC, where it belongs.

I agree with you. I plan on buying darksiders 2 but on the XBOX360. I really only buy the 1st party nintendo titles for the Wii and I think it will be the same for the Wii U.

The "analog" sticks don't click down, thus eliminating the R3/L3 function. For COD, this would mean no sprinting and no knife or prone. The triggers are just buttons and not actual triggers, which differs from the 360 and PS3
You could put some functions on the touch screen, but this re enforces what Pete said in the video. Why would someone invest all of their time into learning a game on the 360 or PS3 controller and then switch over to a radically different control scheme.

@PeteDorr The Zelda and Bird "experiences" were real time. They just used the Wii looking things to show what the controller can do.

agree with you about third party titles.. don't see many people buying them on the Wii U. I only buy Nintendo exclusives for my Wii because I have a 360 and a ps3 and it will probably stay that way. Looking forward to the exclusives for the Wii U though!! hope luigi's mansion isnt just DS :(

I was hoping to be blown away by this year's E3, but unfortunately, I wasn't. You know what I think would be a smart move for Nintendo? Keep the regular Wii for casual gamers. They don't want to be buying another system. Make an attachment of some sort instead, to go along with the Wii, that would add HD support for new games. If that's possible. However, they could release a new, stylish beast of a system, for the hardcore market to compete with Microsoft and Sony. The new Nintendo Revolution.

I think you make a lot of good points, first of all, the name you are completly correct saying they are smart at keeping the name we, even if it sounds pretty stupid, what i think its that a they are going to sell just right lots of casual will want the new wii, and the are a lot of hardcore players that just have a wii so they probably are going to buy the wii u too (that sounded wear) :p

Oh, and I don't think Nintendo can continue to exist by relying almost entirely on first party Mario, Zelda and pseudo-fitness titles.
At this point, nobody really needs another Mario Kart series.
They MUST give third party developers a compelling reason to develop for the Wii U, and that means SALES.
