I had no idea geekdom was a fan of AVGN. James was a huge inspiration for me when I was younger. Just the idea of talking about the things you love and pursuing your dreams is something I really needed in my formative years. Sure the new stuff isn’t as good but man for solid 8-9 years those are some of my favorite videos ever
Most people who are successful like Geekdom101 looked up to people like James Rolfe.

When I first discovered this guy I wasn't sure if he was acting or not. Which made it even funnier to watch 😅
The Nerd is one of my biggest heroes and also influenced my vocabulary along with the Tourettes Guy.
To anyone curious, a youtuber called Superanthony is currently releasing reviews/rankings of all AVGN episodes.
They are quite decent and I recommend them.
I don't mind the balding because it seems like what the nerd would let happen in a funny way. Also the nerd is growing old with us

I feel without James and even Doug Walker, RUclips would be a very different place as they showed us the average Joe could make it on RUclips.
Even my own content was more or less inspired by them. I made a character to be an avatar for me in my videos until they took on a life of their own.
James I think he does still enjoy it but we don't always want to do the same things when we're older as when we're younger. Like you said. His life has changed a lot

Beside his avgn content, I really enjoyed his godzillathon review he dodged from the godzilla 1954 through godzilla final wars
Loved NC but his stuff got stale. Once he tried leaving the character behind and realized he was nothing without it, it stopped feeling genuine
Great video, and I agree with all of your points! James seems to be a really good guy and for me that's a lot of what keeps me coming back. I think in some ways he's a bit out of touch with the video game side of things, but I still really love his film reviews. It seems to me that's where his real passion is. I'd personally love to see his channel transition into something more akin to Red Letter Media (in his own style of course) and that seems like kind of what he was going for with Rental Reviews before that ended. That might have been the most interesting content he's made in years and even that isn't very recent! Thanks for making this video!
I love AVGN....You CANNOT do something like what he is doing for 20 yrs and NOT change....for better or worse...and still continue on. I cant put blame on him for that or criticize what he's doing now, Im still very much entertained by his videos. It's nowhere near as dramatic of a change as lets say....Metallica to the MetallaBama that they've come to be today....or whatever you'd call that.
This game sucks. It all started with those words. I remember all those wannabe AVGN clones.
I remember finding Angry Nintendo Nerd back in seventh grade way back in 2007 using the computer at my local library. Good time.
I used to love avgn, I actually beat a couple games because his videos were just as helpful as funny
JAMES ROLFE IS GOD OF RUclips
James Rolfe is unfortunately stuck, because he has done this now for what, almost 20 years? How would he go and get a job where he could make a living for his kids, etc? It's not like he could walk into an office environment and get some kind of a job like that. A lot of people say that the passion is gone, the creativity isn't there, the humor isn't there because his heart isnt into it.
He probably makes really good money doing what he does, but I know what it feels like to be trapped doing something that you don't like. He has also suffered a lot because if you go back and compare videos from the past to now, because of how RUclips censors and penalizes people for excessive profanity, the character of the nerd has had to change over the years as well. It just isn't what it used to be.
One thing I'm surprised he hasn't done is create like a Patreon or similar and made special, exclusive NSFW episodes and call back to his prior years work and not be afraid to just completely let loose and go a little wild. Maybe the money's good enough the way it is that he doesn't feel this is necessary.
I have to be honest here, James old content is better, but that don’t mean he don’t have hidden gems in the current era’ I like his Final Fantasy VI Majora Mask and Earthbound and his Contra and Castlevania review currently I think his Pro Wresting review was good too and Bevis and Butt-Head reviews, i feel that him tackling games that he likes also for the review can be good’ he can still use the AVGN character do review games he likes because he believes he still can give us great content.
In less than a minute, u summarized how great of an influence, and pioneer james was for the common man, yet ... just sadly ironic now , as the truth is revealed that mike was more of the "angry gamer/writer" and james just the "actor".
Its funny bc as time goes on, everything on screen is never if ever, real. James as the theory goes, couldnt give two shits ever since his movie flop, and is like, welp guess im stuck doing this shit, so i'll just shit out new "content".

My favorite videos of his will always be his 4 part Castlevina series and his Godzilla video. I remember watching him in early high school (I'm 29 now) and learning so much about games. Great times, also the little crossover he did with the NC has one moment in it that to this day I quote and makes me laugh really hard. It's when the NC tackles him ready to fight and James just goes "WHAT, WERE YOU RAISED IN A BARN?! SHUT THE FUCKING DOOR!" Just how he says it legit kills me every time.

The early AVGN days were a special time on the net. A time when you would go to your friend's house after school and just watch funny ass RUclips videos and then endlessly quote them for days and days.

James Rolfe is one of the few from RUclips’s early days who’s still very active and still relevant now. He’s outlived a number of trends and communities in his time including the big Minecraft groups that got big and dissolve years later.
He’s outlived WhatCulture Pro Wrestling for crying out loud.

This is gonna sound weird but I swear we’re all psychically connected(or could be RUclips algorithm lmao) as I just started appreciating him again and watching all his old stuff to get that good ‘ol fashioned RUclips feel. Love and appreciate avgn for sure!
James Rolfe is to RUclips as what Kevin Smith was to indie film making. They connected to a certain audience and made that audience feel like if those guys could do it then we all could too. The RUclips landscape would have been completely different for many years if not for AVGN. And that's not even referring to a retro gaming standpoint or even a "critic persona" stand point, but also from production standards. Back in the days when most RUclips videos were being shot on low bitrate digital cameras that barely cracked SD resolution, James was giving us low budget film making quality content with prosumer level equipment. A lot of people take this for granted now because the quality gap has been closed and being able to achieve that production standard has become more accessible than ever. But, James Rolfe is always gonna be the OG.
i was a big "nerd" of james and doug walker in their early years. the nerd hasnt been so angry in recent years since hes gone trhough almost his whole collection lol

Thank you Danny for this. This was one of your videos that have got me thinking the most about human life in general, my own life, and many things. I related so much to everything said in this video because I am of the same generation as yourself and had so much of the same experiences. Crazy to think that we’re in middle age adults now approaching questions about the legacies we wish to leave behind. It’s a lovely reminder to Carpe Diem, seize the day.

Yeah but he would also prove himself as a hypocrite later on who just couldn’t swallow his pride and admit he was wrong to say that James scammed his fans out of money when he actually delivered the film as promised. Nowadays, hardly anyone knows who he is.
I actually think Archfiend apologized some years ago. I don’t remember the video name, but it was one he had I think shortly after AVGN appeared on Irate Gamer’s video on Dick Tracy.
