    This is the kind of home I'd like to live in. It's not tiny, but small... which is exactly what I'd like.
    Plus, the small stone garden is very nice, too.

      I think many people find the idea of a tiny house just too small, but these homes are much less scary.

    Also, let me know if you enjoy these tours of slightly larger homes. I've got lots more Tiny Homes on the way (and have found some true stunners here in the USA), but I often find some other really special projects that I'd love to be able to feature. What are your thoughts?

      While I was initially attracted to your channel specifically due to my interest in tiny homes, through my research, I've come to appreciate the middle ground that can be found in a 'small home'. If the goal is to live simply with a reduced housing cost to income ratio, then a small home can be just as effective while still being able to afford some of the luxuries that the extra space provides. I'm very glad that you've branched out a little to include unique homes and the inspiration that they provide, even if they are not on wheels. ;-)

    • @livingbig

      Thanks so much Kristin. I totally agree with you, there is so much that we can learn from tiny house principles that can be applied to larger homes. Also, visa versa! For example my tiny house design was largely inspired through earth-ships, which are traditionally really large buildings.

      Yes Bryce, I would like you to feature bigger houses. This one is so lovely. I love the Japanese minimalist way of life. My home is 89 m2 and if styled it like this house it would seem huge :)

    keep these videos up if you have the opportunity Bryce! the common themes of minimalism, design, eco-friendliness, resourcefulness, alternative living, low-cost living options, and the lot are what truly speak to this community you've come to know on your channel. Home dimensions/ magnitude/ proportions although a common theme is not the sole under-lying motivation for the interest, I'm sure you could agree!
    thanks,
    Dave

      If it is like a lot of rural Japanese places, the elementary schools are no longer needed because of the reduced birth rate. Kind of sad, to think there aren't enough children around to keep the elementary school open. Google about Japan's rural schools running out of students. (I don't know about the facts of this particular school, but would not surprise me to know this is the reason he was able to obtain "school materials" at a discount price.)

    My love for tiny houses is mainly for the design elements that so many creative people come up with. Space saving features, or unique furniture or anything that comes from using their imagination is what calls to me. This kind of turned my fairly shitty week in to a little less of a shitty week, your videos are always full of so much enthusiasm it's hard to continue to keep the grumpy up. Those doors though, I mean, the whole house is really amazing, but those doors really stood out to me. Turning doors in to what's basically art is such a clever thing, and obviously they are really beautiful too.

    More big tiny homes, Bryce! As someone who lives in an 1886 solid brick terrace bungalow of 858 sq ft, I began watching your channel for small space living ideas, like storage and shelves. I once lived in 120 sq ft cabin in the woods in Aspen, so this was a big step up for me. Small is easy to clean, my bills are way low, and it feels cozy~ so say all my friends living in 3,200 sq ft homes in suburbia. If I could take my 858 sq ft home on the road, I totally would!

    Your channel is soooo inspirational. We are currently 'renovating' a 1952 frame house (across from a railroad track) in Florida. It's 928 square feet (which includes 300 sq. feet in an addition from the previous owners). My family of four will live in it. I think this channel originally inspired me to live minimally and appreciate what I have. Our home will be small compared to many friends and families' homes, but we couldn't be prouder. I hope our next home is even smaller!!

    Firstly, I am so pleased that I see you are being sponsored! I can worry less about the business model ;-) . Also, as someone who is looking to build a small house, it's great to see the blend. I need room to work from home with a studio, so a true tiny house would be a dream, but not practical at all. Seeing both gives such a breadth of wisdom to draw on from both ideals. Thank you so much for all you do - I really enjoy your work.

      I live in Northern New Jersey, USA which has some of the worst traffic in the US because of the vast amount of people who live in NJ and commute to New York City for work... Normally I am not a fan of sponsors but Audible is great! ..... Keep up the amazing videos mate they are not only informative but extremely relaxing to watch. Some of the houses you have shown is are just unbelievable. You are like the Willy Wonky of Tiny Houses haha... That's supposed to be a compliment.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  7 лет назад +5

      The Willy Wonka of Tiny Houses! :) I'll take that. Glad that you've been enjoying the tours. And yeah, I was reluctant to start introducing sponsors, but as I'm traveling so often, I need it to be able to continue bringing the homes to you all. Plus, sponsors like this are perfect, because I actually am a huge fan of audio books and digital product has a super low environmental impact, so it's ideal for my channel. Oh wow - I can only imagine what it would be like to have to commute to work in a city like NYC. At least your public transport is pretty good there though, right?

      Thank-you! And yeah, I know what you mean about it adding on time. In certain cities (like Tokyo) the public transport was amazing and super efficient. In LA, I looked into taking the train to a place which was about 30 minutes drive away, and it would have taken me 4.5 hours to get there!!!!! Talk about cities designed for cars!

    Beautiful. I love natural woods in a home, I have quite a lot in my own. This small Japanese home really has a lot of space. Grand design - I love it. Thanks Bryce - another fine video!! Take care my friend.

    This home is beautiful. I personally love the wood. Very rustic. Please do more home tours like this! Small homes are nice too cause not everyone wants to live in a tiny house on wheels, but this home still has a smaller foot print. I love the split bathroom.

    What an incredible house. I usually like homes with more modern designes but this one is something special. Rough around the edges yet so charming with all that wood and beautiful little garden. And what a clever way to decrease water usage with that 2in1 toilet.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  7 лет назад

      Thanks Emily. I think elements of this house have given it a bit of a modern edge which is perfectly set against the rustic charm from the original features. A nice mix indeed! And yeah, the toilets are really interesting in Japan. There are some super clever design ideas there for small bathrooms.

      I should be thanking you. Always wanted to se inside small traditional Japanese house.:) True, it is surprising how modern doesn't make original things look old. If it was up to me there would be a lot more changes but i can see that it would be wrong as house looks really unique like this. Have to admit, 8m2 apartments' bathroom is still favorite of mine.

    Thanks for the video! It would be nice to use shosugiban wood (charred wood) here but you can't find it. Pests (including termites) hate it and they way they oil the outside, it sheds water naturally, so it lasts forever. I've always thought it beautiful.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  7 лет назад +5

      I know what you mean. It is possible to just do it yourself. I've seen people use blow torches to char the wood, so you could maybe look at doing that? There is a knack to it though, but I'm sure you could find instructions online.
