I am the traslator of Kierkegaard's Works of Love into Korean. I am glad that reading WL makes your relationship changed. WOW!

"Peter is Peter and I love him". Oh my. This is just beautiful...I'm not sure why this hit me so hard. Maybe it's because I see myself as such a horrible and awful person(I always have!)....and I often wonder how God could love someone like me(as I am) and yet, at times, I believe He does. This is so beautiful, this one quote and there are so many others in just that one book.

It's terrifying, isn't it? Terrifying in a good way. That God loves us more than we love ourselves... It is something I have to remember often, too.

I just decided today to embark on a project I've been wanting to do for years... record an audiobook for Works of Love to share on RUclips. It's a shame so much of his work isn't available in audiobook format so I thought I'd give it a shot :)

I discovered S.K. through Ernest Becker's "The Denial of Death". The name was so unique and intriguing but the excerpts were even more so. I started with "The Sickness into Death" and right from the get-go I knew I had found a gem, all that was left to do was get all his books, read them through and check that box - oops! Bad idea! The endeavor broke down halfway through "Works of Love". It was too much to bear. I had failed to heed his advice to read slowly and it took me 3 years to process half of the book. Now I'm back at it again, this time reading "slowly and lovingly". A truly monumental and divinely-inspired work.
I often wonder if any other religion can produce such a book or even such a mind as S.K.
He has become more of a life companion than merely another author!

"a life companion" - yes! Reading him does feel like listening to the thoughts of a friend. What a great journey to Works of Love... Also I had not heard of The Denial of Death so will keep that one on the radar to read. Thanks for sharing!

Wow! You also read Kierkegaard! I'm at the moment finishing Either/or. It's a long read, that's for sure. Still, there are parts of that book that are fantastic! (The 'do it, or don't; you will regret it' part is amazing.) According to most 'scholars' and persons for read for fun, 'Stages on life's way' is even better, and handles the same subjects as Either/or. The only difference is: Stages contains a third way of life. In Either/or there's only the 'Ethical' life, and the 'Aestetical' life. Stages talks about the way of life Kierkegaard prefers: the 'religious' way of life.
What I, as a 'theologian' like about Kierkegaard is his 'attack' on the 'Christendom' of his age. I consisted of sitting in a church, had almost nothing to do with the Church as portrayed in the New Testament. Most of us think the a 'Christian' when they sit in church every week, and pray for dinner. He really helped me ask the qouestion: what does it mean to be a Christian. He said of himself I did not want to call himself thus. He Always said: 'I'm becoming a Christian.' Maybe most of his works are figuring out what this meant for him.
Enfin, I wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thank you very much.

It's a fascinating question. I guess it goes back to "faith without works is dead." Or, as Jordan Peterson recently put it, to believe in God is to *live* as if you believe in God... I really want to read Either/Or, and I'll keep "Stages on Life's Way" on the radar, too; thanks for mentioning it!

Marian H Peterson said this in his video ‘Who dares to say they believe in God?’ video, right? It’s remarkable how we have in common. Hahaha.

@@hansvriend4327 It could be... I think the video I saw it in was his discussion with Prager (probably a recap of the same ideas).

Marian H Yes, could very well be. Concerning Either/or; I incurrage you to get a abdriged version: I read the full version of the book myself. Compared to books like Lotr, The brother Karamazov and The count of Monte Cristo, it was a very slow read. There are passages that, I think, make it worthwhile though.

Kierkegaard's idea of God's place in our human relationships really reminds me of Martin Buber's I And Thou. It might be an interesting read if you want another perspective on that idea.

Why do you have a picture of him in a small frame?

I used to like having small pictures of authors to decorate my bookcase and bring a "human face" to the shelves. This is a sketch I drew of K some years ago. 🙂

"We live in a very virtue signaling culture." Yes, yes we do. Unfortunately. After this video, now I want to read all you showed here! I've never read anything by him but will remedy that soon.
