You don't buy games anymore, you buy licences

    • @kikixchannel
      @kikixchannel День назад +1

You don't buy licences either. There is not much of a difference between buying a license and buying a game. You can do less with it (for example, you cannot modify it), but a license that is bought is permanent and the side that offers said license must adhere to it indefinitely (until they go bankrupt).
Seeing as they can change the terms of license (which is NOT POSSIBLE when buying a license...only with your permission can the license be changed if you own said license to a given product), for example with how they cut a game off that they didn't want to offer anymore, you don't even buy the license. You buy temporal access to a service.
Of course, the 'permanency' does not apply to buying time-limited licenses, which are...well...limited by time. But everything else still applies to them WITHIN that time, so for example, they cannot be changed without your permission and the product cannot be arbitrarily be made unusable within the licenses duration.

Part of the cost of games is on the players that are stupid enough to buy digital games for physical media prices. For example, Red Dead Redemption 2, still at $59.99. Which is what I would expect to pay for it, if I went to the store 10 years ago to buy a physical collectors copy of it.
If it's a single player game, there should be no DLCs for it. This should only be for multiplayer online games. Especially since you have to generally pay as much as you did for the base game for it.

The reason subscription services are more attractive (to corporations) is the same reason why loot boxes are more attractive than outright buying a cosmetic. Why charge a fixed value for something when you can get people to pay potentially more?
While I like Game Pass, there is a danger that not a lot of people are aware of with it. Putting aside the integrated multiplayer access which is a bit of a confounding factor, it only has value as long as the amount of subscription fees you pay is less than the number of months you play a game. For example, you play a game that costs $30 to buy outright for 3 months of $15 subscription. You have now paid $45 for that game. Those 3 months don't have to be contiguous either, you could play a game one month, then play it again 6 months later, and again 6 more months down the track. You've still paid more than if you just paid outright at the start.
TL;DR Game subscription services require you to constantly be ensuring that your ratio of time played vs. subscription paid results in paying as much as or less than the outright cost to be of value for you otherwise corporations win and take more money than they should.

And ... This is why I ditched Steam regardless of how few of the games I had paid for I managed to play and embraced GOG. I just don't want to depend on their "good will" to have access to things on my account.
Note I never said games I own, again the reason I walked away.
Its bad enough not to be able to sell GOG games, making any expenses a complete loss of capital, but the idea of depending on Steam to be granted access to them because of DRM.
BTW Ubisofts treatment of Rocksmith is a perfect example of why that company is dead to me. I have a Rocksmith DVD and ... I can't play without Steam. Those UberSofties suits can eat bugs and sleep in pods for all I care (I do feel bad about the creatives, but really they should team up and do something substancial).

Ibought BG3 collectors editon. I got a figurine (excellent quality), artbook (hardbound), soundtrack and more physicals for it.
And of course a good game.
Why should I pay money for a mediocre game and some flimsy downloads from Ubisoft?

People are tired of subscription service too cause they get people to buy into them with a low price then very shortly after raise the prices a lot or make a tier system and take stuff away from those that had it at one price point so they can put it into the higher price to make feel like they are force to pay more to have the so benefits they had before. It’s ridiculous and people are sick and tired of it. The government needs to come out and make it so product like games, music, movies bought online are considered like buying the actual physical product. This is getting ridiculous how gamers and others have been screwed cause they pay the same price as a physical product but don’t get the benefit of putting it onto an external device to use later or the company is bought out and they lose everything they bought in one big go or since people don’t actually own the product and only a license the prices need to be way way way cheaper and nothing close to buy the physical product. The people have been screwed over and ripped off long enough.

Studios that support their customers owning their game? Should start by releasing physical copies that don't require network connectivity. Can still obviously release digitally but give the option fof physical copies. Otherwise that is just supporting the ppl who want gamers to not own their games and only purchasing licenses for games. I just stopped purchasing most games all together due to the fact it is a license and not actually truely owned anymore. Even on Steam. I only ever purchase a game now if the game is good enough that it outweighs the fact that I am basically renting it and not actually buying it.

If World of Warcraft Classic were to launch today with a few updates and promises that expansions are coming in roughly six months by three months respectively, if it were met with the same positive public response to the content equivalent to being released today, to provide expansion releases in a timely manner where the players are at with the content, for hotfixes to roll weekly and we witness the same public praise.
A company that provides such a service should be allowed to sell for over a hundred dollars for the base game, over a hundred dollars for the expansions and twenty five bucks a month for a subscription to maintain the game itself and to deal with the problems within because the game itself was worth such a cost and the value is there to charge such a fee.
On the other hand, to charge over a hundred dollars for that recent Star Wars game is silly, I'm not even sure twenty bucks is warranted as it's not a good game nor does it have any reason to expect a larger purchasing price as the company itself knows society was already criticizing how it looked and the gameplay didn't offer much past early 2010's content. I don't like the current need for AAA video game companies to demand a higher base cost for video games when it's already too expensive for most to cough up seventy bucks nor a monthly subscription fee, people are struggling to afford games while companies want products to be valued as a base higher than they currently are, even when those companies know their products are nowhere near the value such a base cost offers.
So, I honestly have different feelings on the matter, I can see games being priced at higher points but I also see many games with microtransactions that shouldn't be allowed to sell the base game, rather they should be forced to give the game out for free even with a single microtransaction within.

I remember when it and Elden Ring came out, and AAA studios were like "Hey, gamers! We have shareholders, you better not make these games your new standards, our shareholders wouldn't allow us to make good games!" Everyone, correctly told them "I don't see how that's our problem. Git gud."
