This makes me feel so much better. This is my first season with quail. First batch hatched early June. And we have 35 quail right now. The flies are out of control. Weve been hosing down the paving stones under the cages daily but its still bad. And it stinks. It gives me hope of continuing if this is just a bad year. I just started trying spraying some water and essential oils under the cages. I tried BugStop its a little better....
Great video Zack . I have fans in my quail barn and it really does help and I do try to mop the floor every other day is it … I’ll just put a little bit Listerine in the water when I mop.
Agreed. This year the flies are crazy. ... they've never been an issue for me before. The lady at the feed store said this is the worst year she's ever seen with them and her customers are saying the same thing. I have aviaries with deep litter. I've dug in and don't see fly larvae, so that's frusterating. I put up a bunch of fly traps, and that caught a bunch of flies, but it also seems like it's dtawing them in from all over the neighborhood, resulting in more flies. I've taken those down to try the Irish Spring Soap and vanilla scented air fresheners. No idea yet if it's preventing them from laying eggs or not, as the adults just fly around --I wasn't observing them actually landing on the deep litter or manure very often before or after putting the deterrents there. I put out more sticky traps, both large and small. My next step is to order fly predators. I have a friend with horses and they work great for her-- it's a species of small insect that paricitizes fly eggs. Important to note: where you see flies is not always where they are breeding. Adults live for a month, so good to trap them, but should start seeing results with the gly predators in two weeks. Maybe I could use quickstrike as bait stations outside of the aviaries to attract the adults in the meantime as well. Wish me luck!
I used the Irish spring soap too. It worked for about 3 days on my back porch but then I discovered that it had to be wiped onto the wood every few days. That has been working for me for the last two weeks. Went from a gazzilion flies to maybe 5 a day.
My cages are outside but covered by 12x12 open sided canopees with tarps that are top sided reflective. For the past 3 years I have formed painters tarp under the cages to catch the poop. With this poop catching method, I have to replace these 2 times a week. This method was very labor intensive and eventually expensive besides very smelly. This year I decided to not use these painters tarps and let the poop hit the ground. I need to say that these cages for egg layers are in an enclosed outdoor 30ftx50ft cage which allows me to have/manage quail on the ground within the same large cage that the egg laying cages are in. This year, the quail can manage the flies that are on the ground. They (the ground quail) also eat any fly larve that the flies lay. ADVANTAGES: no or very little smell !! no or very few flies !! the quail on the ground get more protein !! no expense buying these painter tarps !! Mosquitos are very little !! AND this year I decided to add ringneck pheasants to my hobby !! So, if your birds are outside, think of having a cage that is larger and encloses your egg layer cages and plan to put some birds on the ground. This works for me, much less expense, and easier to manage. I've tried pinesol, lysol, mint, sticky ribbons, fans, other stuff: none of these worked to prevent or repel flies for me. Ron, Stomp Creek Quail (Facebook)
Here is eastern Arkansas we have serious fly problem during the summer. I have been using those sticky ribbons because my cages are all outdoors and I have some quail on the ground. The sticky ribbons work as long as the flys lite on them. Under the cages, I have been using thin plastic painters tarp to catch the poop. Then, at least once a week I collect the tarps and throw them away, replacing with clean new ones. I suspose I could scatter/sprinkle these crystals into the tarp and see if that helps. Can't put the crystals on the ground cause I have some birds on the ground. Tried listerine but doesn't work for me. I heard about Pinesol and will try that. I am scheduled for instection for a breeders permit and import permit so I need to show some progress with fly management. Thanks for the suggestions. Ron Dowda, Stomp Creek Quail in Facebook.
Weird thing few flies. Maybe saw a dozen this year. Bugs entertain and they eat them. Rarely see any bugs near them. Even the compost pile has few. Still need to install a greenhouse fan with closable vents.
Thank you. I just went and ordered some. I have been going crazy. I have been trying fly traps which get expensive fast. I have a bug zapper, I have Irish spring soap hanging around the cages. But they are out of control.
Is the fly bait poisonous to other animals? I'd be afraid of using it around my other animals. I thought you guys sold your quail waste when you have your tanks pumped. Are you guys worried about the poison leaching into your groundwater?
We don’t use it around any other animals and since no quail ever hit the floor in the barn and no other animals are allowed in it will be fine and no the compost won’t have an issue
They're so bad! That was one thing i didn't expect when i added quail. We have ducks and chickens, so there are always flies around, but not like this! 🤢
Who’s going to feed flys to quail , lol… i use this and have been for 5 years . Fly ls eat this and dead almost immediate., thru do not even have a chance to fly up nor get into the cage . Great stuff.
My shire farm always has the answers for my quail questions!!
Thank you. We have learned a lot with all our mistakes

Nice
Ive used that fly poison in commercial barns. It works really well. I sprinkled a small amount in window sills.
Absolutely
Thanks for the tips
Thanks for watching
We use Pinesol. Works great, flies hate it
What do you do it?
Where do you place it? In the poop trays or nearby?
Good to know thanks
Thanks for the info!!

Zack, Any updates on how this is working for you? Tips for usage?
There are maybe 20 flies in the whole barn.

I ordered a 1lb can. Should be here by Tuesday. I hope I have enough fly strips to last until then!!!
Good luck
@@MyshireFarm Works great. We have been using QuickStrike for over a year. I have even used it in our rabbit cage area and it really works!!!
If you compost, will the bait do any harm?
We have not tried that
Pretty sure tractor supply sells that fly bait
Oh cool. I have not seen it there
Can the dead flies go into compost?
yes
I would think.
You just sprinkled the blue quick strike pellets on the ground?
Yep
When producing balut...is the chick already dead before egg being boiled?
Oh yes by a few days
They're so bad! That was one thing i didn't expect when i added quail. We have ducks and chickens, so there are always flies around, but not like this! 🤢
It can be a problem.
What if the quail eat the dead flies?
That’s why you put it below them on the ground if in cages
anyone know if the quail eat the flies if they get sick or die? if not how to i keep them from getting in the cage?
I was worried about this, too.
I would not feed the flies that died by using Quick Strike to the Quail. That being said, there are some places that state otherwise.
@@soswanson9120 thanks for the reply.I don’t plan on feeding them the flies just flies can die I’m the cages and get eaten
